Review Round Up ~ February 28

Ms Trentham returns us to Highland, GA for another installment of the Highland Games - this time organized by Buchanan family friend, Anna, and Iain Connors sent from Scotland (by Izzy) to help. This second book in the series takes place one year after the first book and reads as a stand-alone. (Reading book 1 would be helpful for background).

Anna and Iain are both likable characters who are battling a little bit of emotional baggage as they try to pull off the high expectations around the games. I enjoyed seeing them get to know each other and figure out their communication issues.

A well written, semi slow burn romance Highlander in a Pick Up is a fun read with a definite growth element. Ms Trentham does an excellent job of incorporating the elements from book 1 of the series (as well as upcoming characters in the series) into Anna and Iain’s story. This gives loyal readers a glimpse of where characters are now and what may be coming soon.

I’ve been missing historical romance lately and Wild, Wild Rake was just the ticket.

Avalon is a Cavensham cousin that we’ve seen briefly before. Here we meet her at 17 when she discovers the truth about the marriage her parents arranged. The bulk of this well written story takes place 10 years later when Avalon reconnects with Vicar Devan Farris.

I enjoyed both Avalon and Devan. They were entertaining characters and it was a treat to get to know them and see their emotional growth. I appreciated the bonds they made as they moved from potential adversaries to friends to more.

One of the things I enjoy most about the Cavensham stories is the fact that the heroines are all strong women. Avalon is no exception to this. Wild, Wild Rake was a treat to read and I am looking forward to more from this author.

In this 2nd installment of the McBride books (related to Ms March’s Eternity Springs series) we spend more time with Tucker and Gillian.

Tucker is former Army officer looking for his new path and Gillian is dealing with her own life changes when they become friends. I enjoyed getting to know these two and seeing them form the relationships that would be important to both of them.

This is very much in the vein of the Eternity Springs books, meaning that both characters have their own growth to go through before romance can bloom.

As expected, this is well written and sweet. One word of caution to people who are new to Ms March - I would suggest ready Jackson’s story (at least) before diving into this one. The secondary cast is very interconnected and having that back story would be helpful.

I have a confession- I’m not really sure where to start with telling you about this book. I know I need more than Great and Precious Things is awesome, but trying to do that without giving a ton away is hard.

I think the best way to describe Great and Precious things is evocative. By using two interesting and dynamic people in Cam and Willow as our story tellers, Ms Yarros takes us on a pretty emotional journey.

We see family relationships challenged and reshaped, preconceived notions turned upside down, grief, guilt, unrequited love, friendship, and devotion just to name a few things touched on in this story.

I genuinely liked Cam and Willow and found myself rooting for them. I enjoyed watching them go to bat for each other and seeing how that faith paid off.

I didn’t really know what to expect going in to this read - other than I knew it would be good. What I got wasn’t just good, it was great and seeing love like this was a pretty precious thing too.

I’m a hopeless romantic and adore all things chocolate, coffee and paleo. No, seriously, I need to have a caffeine IV put in. I’ve adored reading all my life, and writing naturally evolved from my love of late nights and promises of one more page.

I’m also a military wife of sixteen years. During my husband’s deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, I was devouring a book a day, and during his third deployment, I finally wrote my own. With a somewhat ironic timing, I received my book deal for Full Measures during his fourth deployment, and published a month after he returned home. We’re currently preparing for his fifth deployment, so check out the blog for the latest!

On the homefront, we have six kids. Yes, you read that right—six. If I’m not writing or playing guitar, I’m usually tying hockey skates for our four boys, or sneaking in John Hughes marathons with my two daughters. We fostered and adopted our youngest daughter from the foster system and we’re passionate about helping others do the same through our non-profit, One October! We’re always busy navigating the winding road of our daughter’s recent autism diagnosis, getting our boys to hockey, prepping for a deployment, and generally trying to stay sane. We’re die-hard Mets fans, but our hearts call Colorado home.

In Stone Cold Kiwi, Ms James returns us to the Te Mana/MacGregor families that we have met in several previous books.

Our heroine, Poppy, has the misfortune of discovering her husband’s infidelity as she is being wheeled into the ER after delivering her third child. Our hero, Matiu, is not only the doctor who delivered the baby, but a distant family friend.

The story that follows is at turns fraught, tense, sweet, and empowering. Yes, there is a romance, but the bigger story is about two people who are more than they’ve allowed themselves to believe they are. Both Poppy and Matiu both have an emotional journey to take and it turns out they are the perfect people to help each other on the way. Add in scene stealing kids, wise grandparents, and parents who finally see the light and the secondary cast helps craft the powerful narrative surrounding these two excellent characters.

One of the messages that stood out for me in Stone Cold Kiwi was the acknowledgement that being a Mom didn’t mean Poppy’s life as her own person stopped happening. The path to Poppy (and the people around her) figuring this out wasn’t smooth, but I appreciated the way she handled things and the improved relationships she gained along the way.

Written in Ms James unique style, this excellent read is a stand-alone piece set in a world created in previous works and features several secondary characters we’ve met before. The country of New Zealand is almost as much of a character in the book as a setting - and as always after finishing a Ms James book, I wish I could go visit!

Sisters by Choice is a lot of what I would expect from a Susan Mallery book. It’s well written, a little thought provoking, a little heartwarming, and has a dose of humor as well.

Sophie, Kristan, and Heather are cousins and all at a cross roads. I found myself relating to each of them at various points in the book. I appreciated seeing the growth that each of the ladies went through as they found their footing with the changes taking place.

Ms Mallery does an excellent job of pulling the reader in and giving small lessons about change, communication, and being brave enough to take a chance.

If you have followed the Arizona Vengeance series, Dominick Carlson is a character that has popped up in every book. We’ve gotten glimpses of the team owner, but here we really have a chance to get to know him and Willow (the player’s sister we’ve watched him pursue for several books.)

Dominick is a character that I’ve enjoyed in the past, but it was fun to see the layers of wealth peeled back to the man underneath. It was sweet watching him fall in love and seeing the softer side of the billionaire.

I had a harder time getting a read on Willow and her refusal to invest in a relationship. There are several references to a past relationship gone bad, but there isn’t enough detail to get a better feel for where her fears are coming from. Even with struggling to get a feel for Willow, I enjoyed seeing her and Dominick together and the way they seemed to integrate each other into their lives and social circles.

As this is the 6th installment of the Vengeance series, the secondary cast is full of previous main characters- it’s a great opportunity for loyal readers to catch up on what’s going on with previous favorites. This is a book that could be read as a stand-alone, but I would discourage that. The reading experience would be richer if other books in the series had been read first.
