A Few new releases and TBR Reads

Misconduct (Birmingham Rebels, #4)Misconduct by Samantha Kane

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

I think this may be my favorite of the Rebels series.
Technically, this is a stand alone, but a lot of the character development takes place in the books that come before. If you are new to the Rebels books, this is an issue you should consider before diving in.

Like the previous books in the series, Ms Kane packs Misconduct with plenty of racy sexy time, but it's not the core issue that it has been previously. The budding Tom-Danny-Carmina relationship definitely has more of an emotional component than we've seen in the series before.

If you have been following the series from the beginning, you will get to see early friends make an appearance as this book seems to encompass at least a portion of all the couples we've met to date.

This also touches on the difficulties that returning veterans can face, this is handled in a way that shows Carmina's strength, but also the vulnerability of her character.

This is a must read for Rebels fans!

Frisk Me (New York's Finest, #1)Frisk Me by Lauren Layne

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Free Paperback from Publisher

This was a cute read featuring a dedicated NY cop and the reporter tasked with telling the tale of America's hero cop.
Luca and Ava are both entertaining characters and I enjoyed their journey from antagonists to friendly to lovers. Both Luc and Ava had demons to battle and while that led to crossed swords, it also took them on a journey of self discovery.
This is the first book in Layne's New York's finest series and as such introduces a fun secondary cast that I look forward to getting to know better.

Naughty Prescription: A Bad Boy Medical RomanceNaughty Prescription: A Bad Boy Medical Romance by Tia Lewis
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

oh boy....
This story had potential to be cute. Older, successful doctor "meets" young nurse at his hospital via an online dating app not realizing they work together. A relationship develops, they get caught, and eventually get back together.
The cute idea died on the operating table and was killed by poor execution. The dialogue is incredibly stiff and stilted and the characters are underdeveloped and hard to connect too.
Even if the conflict and eventual resolution are semi realistic, that is blown out of the water by the "twist" in Anna's background revealed at the very end.
This just wasn't a good read for me.

Elizabeth's Review

My rating: 3 of 5 stars - Average Read

Review Copy Provided by Author

Before I go into my review - I need to note that Treasuring Amber is an interconnected stand alone and I have not read the books that come before in the series. I think some of the factors that influenced the rating I gave the book would have been different had I read the whole series - or even just more of it.

Treasuring Amber is an interesting premise. Amber is a young woman (very early 20's) who has recently moved to town and is creating a life for herself. She's a little brash and might need lessons on how clothes can send an image, but most everyone seems to like her. An impromptu kiss with a friend's brother leads to sparks and a case of insta-lust and the potential for more - maybe.... until a jerk neighbor discovers a past betrayal and everything blows up.

I struggled in connecting to Amber and Harper (her love interest), but I think a part of that goes back to not having read more of the series. I have the feeling that a lot of their character development happened in prior books. I did find myself rooting for Amber - she seems like a girl who has done the best with the hand life dealt and I have to admit to getting angry on her behalf.
Harper was a little harder for me to relate too and understand his "feelings" for Amber and believe that they were genuine, so that made the ending of the book a little harder for me to accept. I would have like to have seem him work a little harder.

Overall, this was a well written book and entertaining. I would caution readers who have not spent time with this series as I think the backstories would help connect some of the dots a little bit.

Drunk Dial ~ Penelope Ward ~ Cover Reveal

We are excited to bring you the upcoming standalone from New York Times, USA Today, and #1 Wall Street Journal Bestselling author Penelope Ward.

DRUNK DIAL will release on AUGUST 21!

Cover designer: Letitia Hasser, RBA designs
Cover Model: Vadim Ivanov
Cover Photography: Kevin Roldan
From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new, sexy standalone novel. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Look up Landon Roderick, that boy from childhood whom I’d never been able to forget—even though he so easily forgot about me—and call him. Then again, anything sounds like a good idea when you’ve had a little too much wine before bed, right? It was supposed to be just a quick, meaningless, prank call. Instead, I went off on him—unloading thirteen years of pent-up emotions. I didn’t think he’d call me back. I certainly could never have anticipated the weeks of sexually tense phone conversations that followed as I got to know the man he’d become. Turned out, Landon had never really forgotten me, either. That special connection we had was still there. I opened up to him, but there were also things about me he didn’t know. And he had his own secrets. Over the countless hours we talked on the phone, I wondered what would happen if we actually saw each other. One night, I did something impulsive again. Only this time, I went to the airport and booked a ticket to California. We were about to find out if one phone call could bring two lost souls together or if my drunk dial really was all just a big mistake. A complete STANDALONE.
(No Amazon e-book preorder. Will go live on/around release day.)
Penelope Ward is a New York Times, USA Today, and #1 Wall Street Journal Bestselling author of thirteen novels. With over a million books sold, her titles have placed on the New York Times Bestseller list sixteen times. She is the proud mother of a beautiful 12-year-old girl with autism (the inspiration for the character Callie in Gemini) and a 10-year-old boy. Swink ~ Adriana Locke ~ New Release and Review

Title: Swink
Series: Landry Family #5
Author: Adriana Locke
Genre: A Standalone Bad Boy/Good Girl Romance
Release Date: July 21, 2017

I’m that guy.

Camilla Landry rustles against me, the silky fabric of her overpriced lingerie slipping along my bruised rib. The porcelain perfection of her skin is even more innocent against the colorful ink dotting my own. It’s demure meets damage, pampered meets punctured.

So, yeah, it’s obvious I’m that guy. Dominic Hughes. Her attempt at rebellion. Her bid to see what the other side of the tracks feel like. I’m okay with being used because, from where I’m sitting, the other side of the tracks have never looked so good.

He’s standing in the doorway, one hand on the sweatpants that hang just below his chiseled hips and the other leans on the frame. The tattoos that mark his flesh are vivid against his bare skin, making the blues of his eyes shine.
He flashes a lopsided smile my way. “Took you long enough.”
“I don’t drive like a bat out of hell,” I laugh, stepping past him. “Did you shower already?”
“Yeah. I smelled like gym floors.”
“As long as you don’t smell like gym whores,” I say, setting the bags on the table in the kitchen.
His laugh is contagious and I feel myself smiling. A set of arms cage me in from behind, grasping the table on both sides of me. My skin breaks out in a shiver as his lips find the sensitive spot behind my ear.
His face buries in the crook of my neck and he takes a long, leisurely breath. “You smell so good.”
“Keep doing that,” I say, relaxing my head onto his chest.
“Talking with your mouth against me.”
“You like this?” he asks all breathily so that each word whispers across my skin.
My eyes fall closed as I relish in this moment of nothing but him. “No, I love this.”
“Can I tell you a little secret?”
“As long as you keep talking, you can tell me whatever you want.”
He chuckles, dotting kisses up and down my neck. “I love this too, feeling your body give up the fight of the day and let me take over.” He turns me in his arms so I’m facing him. “I love that you trust me enough to let your shoulders sink out of that perfect posture you walk around with.”
As he reaches up and undoes the elastic in my hair, I watch his features soften. He moves carefully, unwrapping the tie from the twisted mess in my locks, careful not to pull.
“There,” he says, cupping the back of my head through my long tresses, “that’s better.”
“You don’t like my hair up?”
“Not like you had it. You look to lunching-y,” he says, wrinkling his nose.
“Yes,” he grins.
“You are too cute.”
“You are too fucking sexy.”
Reaching up, I swipe the pad of my thumb over the cut above his eye. He flinches, but just for a second. “What happened?”
“Bond’s right hand.”
“I hate him.”
“So do I,” he snickers.
“Let’s get some ice for it.”
He leans in, his brows tugging together. “Let’s not.” His eyes hood as he takes me in, his tongue darting out and wetting his lips. My knees weaken, my body humming with delight at his reaction.
“I want to take care of you,” I whisper, although that’s really on the backburner now. “Let me baby you.”
Instead, he lifts me up and places me on the table. My stomach clenches as he positions himself between my thighs, my sundress curling at my waist. I ring my legs around him, pulling him so close that the soft cotton of his sweatpants rubs against my opening.
He looks down. “You aren’t wearing panties.”

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Author

Ms Locke continues the Landry family series with Camilla's story in Swink. Technically, this is a stand alone, but the secondary cast is such an interconnected group that having read at least one of the other books in the series would be helpful.

I enjoyed Camilla and Dom's story - it's a bit different than the rest of the series in that Dom is a bit rougher and there is a wrong side of the tracks element.

While I liked both characters and enjoyed the give and take as they figured things out, Swink walked a fine line for me of almost becoming repetitive. This book also seemed to serve as a wrap up for one series and the launch of another, so there were times when the secondary cast shined a little brighter than I would have liked.

Overall, Swink was a fun read. It wasn't the strongest book in the Landry series, but if you've been reading the series, you definitely need to meet Cam and Dom.

Stubborn as a Mule ~ Juliette Poe ~ New Release and Review

Down in Whynot, NC, there are three things that hold true: 1) life moves just a little bit slower, 2) family means everything, and 3) you don’t mess with history.

When his family decides to sell a home that’s been part of their history for over a century, Lowe Mancinkus is madder than a hornet. To add insult to injury, the woman who purchased it is some fancy pants, city girl looking to fix it up and sell it off. Doesn’t matter that she’s sexy as hell or that just being near her gets his blood racing like never before. That home belongs to his family, or at least it did until she came to town.

Well that just won’t do, now will it?

From the moment that she laid eyes on the historical home in rural North Carolina, Melinda Rothschild knew Mainer House was something special. The perfect escape from life in New York City, Melinda signed the papers and set to work restoring the house to its natural beauty. That is until an angry Lowe showed up on her doorstep one day. With a scowl on his handsome, chiseled face. And a shotgun in his strong, muscular arms.

Is it getting hot in here?

Melinda’s about to get a lesson on life in the south, but Lowe is about to learn a lesson of his own – this city girl doesn’t back down from a fight.

This was a very cute return to Whynot, NC and a ultimately very sweet "enemies" to Lovers story.
I use the term enemies loosely because it doesn't take long for the animosity between Lowe and Melinda to transition first into friendship then to more.

I truly enjoyed the trip back to Whynot and while Lowe and Melinda are at the center of the story, I really felt like this was a book more about the town than an story about their relationship. The extended cast is fantastically colorful and they honestly jump off the page.

The initial transition from animosity to grudging respect and fledgling friendship was authentic and touching. Most of Lowe and Mely's relationship was similar and it made me want to root for them, my only complaint is that the final transition to commitment and intimacy seemed a little forced. The final conflict in their relationship felt like something that could have easily happened in a small town, but I didn't love how Mely responded.

Overall, Stubborn as a Mule was fun and enjoyable. It was a read that is perfect for a relaxing afternoon and I am looking forward to seeing what Ms. Poe has up her sleeve for the rest of Whynot.

Kiss My Boots ~ Harper Sloan ~ New Release and Review

In this second of the sultry, Western-set Coming Home series from New York Times bestselling author Harper Sloan, Quinn Davis might finally have a shot at her own happily-ever-after—but will she let love in, or will she tell it to go ahead and kiss her boots?

Quinn Davis prefers to live her life quietly. She’s the stereotypical tomboy with two overprotective big brothers who have always been there to protect her, especially from devilishly handsome cowboys with silver tongues. That is, until Tate Montgomery comes riding into town. Their first meeting, however, is far from something out of a fairy tale and only further convinces Quinn that men aren’t worth her time.

The only place Tate Montgomery ever truly felt at home growing up was during the long, sweltering summer months he spent at his Gram and Paw’s farm in Pine Oak, Texas. Now, Tate has returned to his childhood sanctuary seeking a fresh start—but if he’s being entirely honest, he’s not just back for the wranglers and Stetsons. During those summers, Quinn was a friend-turned-young-love who Tate lost when life threw him a curveball and he cut all ties to his past; but all it takes is one glance at the raven-haired beauty he did his best to forget for him to realize just how much he’s been missing….

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

This is a book I struggled with how to review because while there were parts I absolutely loved, there were things that had me climbing the walls with frustration. I ended up deciding to go with the higher rating because the parts that I found frustrating fell into the personal preference category and I felt that it would be unfair to let that way too heavily.

The story is Kiss My Boots is a solid 4 star effort for a second chance romance. Quinn and Tate fell in love over the summers that he would stay with his grandparents through high and high school before he "vanished" at the end of the summer before college. 9 years later he's back in town and they have history to deal with.
I loved these two together. Their love story, both past and present was sweet, tender, and had me rooting for them. The reasons behind their separation made it easier for Quinn and her brothers to forgive Tate and let their relationship rebuild itself.
The secondary cast centers on Quinn's brothers, Maverick (Coming Home #1) and Clay and the family drama explained initially in book 1. Those issues continue to play out in Kiss My Boots, but even with some of the continuations, this works well as a stand alone.

Okay - now as much as I liked the story in Kiss My Boots, some of the execution had me extremely frustrated. The biggest issue for me was that even though this series is set in Texas, very little is done to establish the broader setting outside of the town of Pine Oak. I could live with that, but for the author's instance that the characters "speak" with an exaggerated accent. The accent issue is two fold: 1) the dropped g's and other unique pieces of language actually made it difficult to read some of the dialogue. 2) The over the top language choice made it seem almost as if the author was making fun of the types of people her characters represent.

I'd like to believe that the issues that I found frustrating were in place because the author felt they were important to the story and not everyone is going to have the same preferences or predilections I do while reading, so I can't penalize the book too much. Overall, I enjoyed the story and am looking forward to Clay's story.

This is my first Jamie Hollins book and having read it, I am sorry I haven't discovered her before.
Megan McKenna is struggling in the aftermath of her divorce when she meets James Foley. The journey that follows is a well crafted exploration of how two wounded people can find their second chances at love and happily ever after.

While their relationship isn't smooth, they do have some wonderfully sweet moments. Both Megan and James grow throughout the story and are people that are easy to like and root for.
Reading Megan's story makes me want to go back and read the earlier McKenna books by Ms. Hollins.
