Review Round Up ~ June 30

New Release:

The Summer of No Attachments (The Summer Friends, #2)The Summer of No Attachments by Lori Foster

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Copy Provided by Author

If you are looking for a good poolside or beach read, you’ve found it with the Summer of No Attachments.

Friends Ivey and Hope are a likeable pair that I enjoyed getting to know. Their interactions with each other spoke to the bonds of family we choose and it was nice to see an example of a healthy, supportive female friendship.

It was also fun to see them in their budding friendships/relationships with brothers Corbin and Lang. Both men were almost too good to be true, but it worked for this story.

Overall, this is a fairly light read. There are some conflict-like moments, but they flow through the whole story vs one big fight scene. The lighter feel felt just right coming off the stresses of 2020 and into a new summer.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

We had glimpses of the extended Lyon family in the Beach in Winter. A River in Spring introduces us to brother Nobel, a 40 something set in his ways and nicknamed “the Invisible Man”

A truly fun meet cute brings Dove into his life and a sweet story unfolds. Nobel and Dove (along with their family and friends) were great characters to get to know. I appreciated how Ms Pike took the potentially extreme personality differences and managed to blend them into something that could be love.

The conflict of A River in Spring is woven into the story in such a way that we can see it coming, but weren’t sure how things would play out. I loved how Nobel was surrounded by strong women and could see his own struggles in reconciling his wants with someone else’s.

Family, both those by blood and by choice, play a huge role in this well written book. This is a man interconnected stand-alone. It was nice to see where Scarlett and Parish (from a A Beach in Winter) are now and get an idea of who the other Lyon brothers are. I am looking forward to seeing more from this family!

From New York Times Bestselling author Corinne Michaels comes a heartbreakingly beautiful standalone story about letting love in.

Elizabeth's Review

4.5 stars - One of the Best

Review Copy Provided by Author

Honesty time - You Loved Me Once made me nervous from the very first chapter. Part of that is my previous experience with Ms Michaels as an author and part of it was the book itself.

This is a book that a reader needs to experience for themselves, so I am going to try to limit what I share here. This very much a character (and personal drama) driven story and we are given a leading lady that is charismatic. Serenity pulls you in even as she potentially rubs you the wrong way with the things she does to protect herself.

Serenity’s back story is slowly revealed as we get to know her. Understanding where she started and what she went through makes the emotional growth in the book compelling and it made me like her even more.

She is surrounded by a small, but impactful supporting cast. I especially liked Westin and would have appreciated seeing some of the story from his point of view too. Having said that- this is very much a complete tale that puts on display just how much the past can impact us and the good things that can happen when you let go and open yourself up to new experiences.

EXCERPT

“Jesus, you’re sexy.” I spoke without thinking.

“Me?” she asked, sounding incredulous.

“Yes. Your curls, your curves, your smile. You’re so beautiful, and you have no idea, which makes you even more so in my books.”

She blinked, looking startled. “I had no idea you felt that way.”

I leaned forward, taking her glass from her fingers, setting it on the table, then dragging her onto my lap. I covered her mouth with mine and kissed her. I plunged one hand into her curls I loved so much, smoothing the silky strands between my fingers, and used my other arm to hold her tight. She opened for me, and I explored her, the crisp taste of the wine still lingering on her tongue. I only meant to kiss her once and let her return to her corner, but now that I had her in my arms, I didn’t want to let her go. I kissed her harder, delving my tongue into her mouth and finding all the sweet ridges, the smoothness of her teeth, the velvet feel of her tongue in my quest. She returned my caresses with enthusiasm, pressing herself closer, her legs splaying over mine so she straddled me. She wove her fingers into my hair, tugging and pulling, teasing the nape of my neck, making me hiss in pleasure. I was hard with desire for her, and I let her feel it. I wanted her to know how much she turned me on. When our mouths separated, I dragged my lips to her ear, after worshiping the smooth skin of her cheek and neck. “Beautiful,” I stated firmly.

She blinked at me, her dark eyes wide in her face. “I think you’re the sexiest man I have ever seen.” She ran her hands over my arms. “I have never met anyone like you. So strong and masculine, yet so sweet and amazing.” She swallowed. “You make me feel safe, Ronan.”

“You are always safe with me. Always.”

She bit her lip, glancing down between us. “You’re, ah, large everywhere.”

I chuckled. “All to make you smile, little bird.”

“Well, you do that just fine,” she responded.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Copy Provided by Author

If you are looking for a feel good read, then Finding Ronan's Heart is right where you need to be.
This connected stand alone in the ABC series (a BAM spin off) focuses on Ronan, one of the triplets, as he meets and falls in love with Beth.

Ronan, Beth, and the families that surround them were so much fun to spend time with. I enjoyed seeing Ronan discover who he was on his own and found the way he dealt with the growing pains to be naively sweet. Beth is a character that I would love to have as a friend. I appreciated the way she shouldered her challenges, but didn't become bitter about them.

The dynamic of this book is one where even when mistakes are made, it's hard to stay mad at the characters. With great messages about perserverance, kindness, being yourself, and family, this is a great big hug in the form of a story.

Review Round Up ~ June 15

New Release:

Love for Beginners (Wildstone, #7)Love for Beginners by Jill Shalvis

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy PRovided by Author

This is another solid entry into the series surrounding Wildstone.

Emma and Allison were high school nemisi who stumble across each other when they are both at a cross roads in life. Ms Shalvis did a wonderful job of making these two, along with the men in their lives, relatable and people that I wanted to spend time with.

I appreciated seeing the evolution of the cast. We saw humor, healing, and some hard truths hit home as Emma, Allison, Simon, and Ryan figured things out.

Add in scene stealer seniors and furry friends, and this was a great feel good story.

My Kind of Perfect (A Trillium Bay Novel Book 3)My Kind of Perfect by Tracy Brogan

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Author

My Kind of Perfect is a great beach/pool side read for the summer. Ms Brogan brings the reader back to Trillium Bay on the shores of Lake Huron where the town is a much of a character as the people.

In this installment, the story is focused on Lilly, the youngest of the Callaghan sisters. Lilly’s story seemed to perfectly capture the idea behind “the grass is always greener.”

I appreciated how the author was both gentle with Lilly as she returned home and navigated figuring out what she wanted, but also made her seem some hard truths about life. Lilly’s sisters played a huge part of this story, and series followers will be glad to see what Brooke and Emily are up to now. Part of me feel like this is the perfect conclusion to the series, but I am also sad to see Trillium Bay go.

Excerpt

“Turn around.”

It’s a guttural command.
He bends me over the arm of the couch, and my hands hit the cushion for support, to steady myself. At the sound of the condom tearing, my inner muscles contract, bracing for him. He spreads my cheeks and, slipping his whole hand between my legs, cups the trembling flesh. I’m unprepared for the swipe of his tongue. For the subtle abrasion of his beard scraping the inner skin of my thighs. For the sound of him eating me. I push back against his face, helpless, no shame. Digging my nails into the cushions, I widen my legs to give me more, to take more for myself. He grips my thighs, holding me steady for his devouring mouth until, with a sob that sails over the rooftop, over the city, I contract around his delving tongue. The orgasm hits hard, tightening the muscles in my thighs and calves. With staccato breaths, I bury my face in the couch, biting my lip to the point of pain.

“Canon,” I beg. “Stop teasing me and—”

He shoves in, and the words tumble back down my throat, recessing into the shock of this pleasure.

“Jesus.” Need shreds my voice to ribbons.

He coasts his hand up my back, gently cuffs my neck. Ass in the air, I rise up on my toes, begging for breath, petitioning for more dick. He gives it to me, pushing impossibly deeper.

“So damn good,” he grunts behind me.

I hope I never get over how perfect he feels inside me, like I was molded to his specifications. Shaped for his dimensions. I moan and reach my hand back to pull at one of my cheeks, widening the way for his cock. It feels like he goes where no dick has gone before, deeper, better. Somehow I feel each thrust in my heart. His every touch plays on my emotions, and tears sting my eyes. His hand tightens at my hip, and he slides the other hand up my arm, finds my hand on the couch and laces our fingers together. He sets a frenetic pace that sends the blood singing through my body again. The cushion absorbs my scream as I come, and I punish the soft cotton with clawing nails. With his voice strangled, his fingers fisted in my hair, he comes.

Collapsing against my back, a heavy, happy burden, his breath stilted and warm at my neck, he snakes one muscled arm around my middle, clutching me. After the urgent, feral coupling, it’s a cherishing hold. I cross my arm over his at my waist and tangle our fingers. It’s fragile and sweet, this moment, like flakes of sugar disintegrating on your tongue when you’ve barely had time to taste.

Elizabeth's Review

My rating: 5 of 5 stars - One of The Best

Review Copy Provided by Author

Books like Reel are some of the hardest to review. Not because I didn’t like it ( l loved it) but, because I want to tell you ALL THE THINGS. If I tell you ALL THE THINGS I risk dimming the light that comes from experiencing a book that wraps itself around you and makes walk right along it’s characters as they go through their highs and lows. So, please bear with me…. I’m going to try and tell you why you should be buying this book without giving anything away.

The key cast of Reel is fairly small and I genuinely liked them all. Neevah and Canon are both people I would be proud to hold up to my kids and say “that’s how you do it. That’s hard work and that’s getting it done”

From a story/plot perspective, there is a lot going on here and this is a LONG book. But, Ms Ryan does an excellent job of keeping things moving. Everything here feels necessary to the story and to the growth of the characters and the relationships that take center stage.

Ms Ryan is the queen of meeting where they are and moving them down the emotional road. She took what could have been a typical power imbalance romance and added layers that were both thought provoking and heart string tugging. The one thing left out here was the fate of the movie, Desi Blue. I am hoping that means we will be coming back with some of the wonderful secondary characters to see what happens next.

608 Alpha Ave ~ Adriana Locke ~ New Release & Review

We are so excited to announce the release of Adriana Locke's new novella, 608 Alpha Ave. This is a total standalone story about a grumpy, small-town mechanic and a pocket-full-of-sunshine heroine that gets under his skin.

Basically—read this now!

Even better is that the novella (did we mention that it's a standalone?) is available in Kindle Unlimited.

Things heat up (and take an unexpected turn) when a self-proclaimed romantic requests the help of a broody small-town mechanic.

Grayson Blake is a jackass.
There’s no other way to put it.
He comes into Fireside every day and orders a beer. It’s nearly impossible to get him to have a conversation while he drinks it. Smiles—or anything remotely close to it—are even more rare.
Despite his cantankerous personality, he’s so freaking gorgeous. His thick black hair, broad shoulders, and the tattoos that mark his calloused skin draw me in like a magnet. I don’t even care that he’s ten years older than me. I’m here for the age gap. And his broody, bad-boy persona is entirely more attractive than it should be.
I have a thing for the rough-around-the-edges mechanic. And I’ve heard through the grapevine that he has a thing for me too. But getting him to admit it will be as easy as catching lightning in a bottle.

Buy Now for $2.99 or Read Free in Kindle Unlimited.

“I don't get it,” I mutter.

My hand stills against the countertop, a white bar rag clutched firmly in my grasp.

Natalia Barlow leans across the end of the bar, putting her ass and the top of her thong on full display for the table of bikers behind her. An unlit cigarette is perched between her cherry-red lips, threatening to topple to the floor as she catches me looking and smirks.

I roll my eyes and turn my back to her.

“I don’t get it,” I say again, louder this time.

My gaze fixes on the man—the only man—occupying a barstool on this side of the restaurant. Grayson Blake. Black hair, scruffy beard, tall, and oh-so muscular with tattoos etched into his tanned skin. Word has it that he has flames inked on his right hip, and when he moves, they dance as if they’re alive.

I’ve mentally filed that away because it’s something I’ll (sadly) never know for myself. Guys like Grayson Blake? They go for women like Natalia. Vixens. Women who give as good as they get. Women who understand them or, at the very least, the games they play.

I’m not one of those women. It will be both my personal and professional downfall.

Grayson lifts his beer bottle, and as if it pains him to do it, he slides his gaze to mine.

I swallow. Hard.

It doesn’t matter that I’ve worked at Fireside Bar and Grill for two years or that I’ve spent countless hours behind this very bar while Grayson sits on the other side, I can’t think straight when he looks at me. I also can’t look away. It’s quite the predicament.

“It just perplexes me,” I say, sinking my gaze into the steely depths of Grayson’s eyes. My voice isn’t quite as confident as it was a few seconds ago. It’ll come back around, though. It just takes a moment to get my bearings.

Grayson’s features are void of humor. Or emotion. Or curiosity. He watches me as if I’m a toddler and he’s in charge of making sure I don’t choke on a peanut or small coin.

I bite my lip. “I just … Natalia …” I shrug, my voice fading into the rock music playing overhead.

Grayson’s thick, engine grease-stained fingers grip the bottle. “Am I supposed to ask?”

The grit of his tone washes against my skin, leaving a flurry of goose bumps in its wake. It’s this way every time he talks to me. And whenever he talks to Corbin, the bartender who’s training me in the art of bartending so I don’t have to just waitress anymore. Come to think of it, I also have the same physical reaction to him when I’m in the Cherry Street Market Grocery Store buying bagels and I hear him talking from an aisle over.

Who am I kidding? I react this way every time I’m in Grayson’s proximity. Hell, I shivered in my flip-flops when I caught wind of his cologne outside of Pearl’s Pawnshop and Liquor Store last week.

“Are you supposed to ask what?” I ask him.

“About whatever you keep jawing about other there—about Natalia, I reckon.”

“Well, since you asked—”

“I didn’t.” He smiles a lopsided, amused smile that makes me wonder if he’s smiling with me or at me. “I asked if I was supposed to ask. I didn’t ask.”

I narrow my gaze. “You know what, Grayson Blake? You’re an asshole.”

He brings the beer bottle to his lips, hiding a satisfied grin, and pulls his gaze back to the hockey game on the television in the corner.

This was a fun quick novella from a favorite author in a new setting.
I enjoyed Haley and Grayson and found their dynamic interesting. Given that this is a novella, we didn't get to know these two characters as well as I would have liked. A lot happened in a fairly short time frame and I really would have enjoyed seeing more from them.

This is the first Cherry Falls Romance for me and it definitely whet my appetite for more of the town and the people in it. I am especially curious about Grayson's brothers and Haley's friend, Kaylee.

Timing is everything.

Presley Hale and Sebastian Vargas are no strangers to goodbye. Their high school summers were spent wrapped up in each other until she would inevitably go home to California. One season after college, Sebastian finally escaped the little Texas town to travel the world, and they said goodbye for what they thought might be the last time.

Sebastian went one way. Presley went the other.

For the first time in five years, they’re both in town, but the timing is no better than ever. So the only thing to do is what they do best. Keep it casual.

Friends with benefits.

They’ve done it before—doing it again will be easy.

But their hearts don’t get the memo.

When the lines of their arrangement blur, Presley and Sebastian are faced with decisions they’ve avoided for years. And that’s not even their biggest problem.

A small town in danger of failing.

A secret that could tear them apart.

And two hearts that can’t hide anymore.

They’ve shared so many summers, but none compare to what they’ll face.

Timing is everything.

And their time is almost up.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life -- a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey. When she's not writing, she's reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

I loved meeting Presley and Priscilla in Bet the Farm, so I was excited to see them take the lead in Friends With Benedicts. Presley was paired with high school crush, Sebastian.

Part of me loved seeing Presley and Sebastian reconnect, but I also found myself repeatedly frustrated by them and their inability to communicate. It was almost like the previous decades worth of summer only relationships have made it so they don’t know how to talk to one another and that made it difficult at times to connect with them as a romantic couple. More than once I wished I could reach in the book and bop them both for being stubborn.

Friends with Benedicts tells Presley and Sebastian’s story amid drama in their small community. This pulled in several community members, including Presley’s cousins, as secondary characters that I am hoping to get to know better. This same community played a big role in how Presley and Sebastian interacted more than once- including some pretty helpful nudges that gave hope for a happily ever after.

Overall, this was an entertaining stand alone read featuring a huge scene stealer in Priscilla. If you are looking for a small town second chance story, this is for you.

Elizabeth's Review

My rating: 5 of 5 stars - One of the Best
