Flame ~ Adriana Locke ~ Cover Reveal

Adriana Locke has revealed the gorgeous cover for Flame!

Releasing: November 2, 2023

Wanted: A Marriage of Convenience

I swore I would only get married if my life depended on it.

Oh, the irony.

Because the universe took that as a challenge, I’m now in the market for a husband. But if I’m going to be stuck in a temporary marriage, I want it to be with the right man.

I might as well try to enjoy this experience, right?

Considering the circumstances, I need a protector—someone who will throw down for his short-term wife with no questions asked. He’ll be fit. Intelligent. My potential short-term husband will have a dry sense of humor. And, if I’m dreaming big, he’ll be drop-dead gorgeous and a little grumpy. Hot, grumpy men are so attractive.

I mean, if a marriage of convenience is the only way out of this precarious situation, I may as well look for a perfect, broody bodyguard, right?

It could be fun. Lots of fun.

Especially if the one man I know who fits the bill will play along.

But, if Foxx Carmichael does agree to this crazy plan, for better or worse, death might do us part in a whole other way.

Something Like Hate ~ Piper Rayne ~ New Release & Review

Elizabeth's Review

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Copy Provided by Author

If you enjoyed The Kingsmen series from Piper Rayne, then you will definitely like the new series featuring the Chicago Grizzlies! The first installment features Miles and Bryce - both secondary characters from the Kingsmen series.

Loyal readers will remember the animosity between these two and it was fun to see the source of the issue and how things would eventually boil over.

The authors behind Piper Rayne did an excellent job of building the characters up and delving into their emotional backstories. It created an environment where I couldn’t help but root for them to get things figured out. I especially appreciated the conflict in the story. It was a unique twist that played perfectly into who Bryce and Miles are.

As the first book in a new series, some world-building is involved. We see visitors from The Kingsmen and get to know a new group of friends and players. I am invested now and can’t wait to see what happens next!

Something like Hate by Piper Rayne is now live!

I love him.

I loathe him.

It’s like plucking daisy petals in my head, but he’ll never know.

When Miles Cavanaugh, the best safety in the league, was traded to the Chicago Grizzlies football team last year, I could finally breathe. Temptation was miles away.

How naïve to think it would end there because when the opportunity to write for a national magazine based in Chicago lands in my lap months later, I can’t turn it down. Sure, it’s a big city, but the sexual energy feels like a beacon between us the minute my plane lands.

To make matters worse, I end up having to take over the job of reporting exclusively on the Chicago Grizzlies. Which means traveling with the team, interviewing players, and pretty much having an all-access pass to their lives during the season.

Miles and I put up a great front, quickly hating on one another, but we both know it’s a lie. We also know the rules are simple. For me, don’t sleep with the subject of your articles. For him, don’t sleep with the journalist who can make or break your career.

I thought straight-laced Miles Cavanaugh followed all the rules… oh how wrong I was.

Review Round Up ~ September 25

New(er) Releases:

What Became of MagicWhat Became of Magic by Paige Crutcher

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

Ms Crutcher is a new (to me) author and I picked this book up off of Net galley to review based on the description alone. I was curious about the premise.

What Became of Magic was not what I expected based on the description. The story of Aline Weir, her life, and what happens when she arrives in Matchstick was interesting, but I have to be honest and say that the second half of the story lost me a bit.

Based on the first half of the story (and the blurb) I thought this book was headed one way. But it took a hard left. While I enjoyed the book, I struggled a bit with what message the author was sharing in how events unraveled.

The characters here are interesting and there is an intrigue element that creates excellent tension. The core secondary cast is full of unique characters. They help move the story along and add some to the confusion. I’m curious if having read previous books by the author would have helped in better understanding this book

My rating: 3 of 5 stars - Average Read

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

I picked this up off of Net Galley because it sounded interesting. After a very slow start (I almost tagged it as DNF) things picked up and it got better.

Cordelia and Eustace are estranged sisters with a ton of individual baggage when they get the call to return to the family ancestral home they didn’t know existed - and that’s just the beginning of the oddities that occur.

From a plot perspective, I would give this 3.5 stars. The mystery of the Bone family estate is woven into the story for the sisters to discover. The reader is figuring things out alongside the characters and there are twists and turns that keep you on your toes.

For characters, this is a 3 star read. It’s not that I didn’t like characters, but I never felt like I understood them enough to become invested who they were as people.

The last 40% of this book is what saved the story. The author gave the Bone family a very complicated back story, but then made it difficult for the sisters to figure it out. I get that some of that was on purpose, but it made it hard to become interested in who the latter family was and what would happen next. Add in significant events that don’t seem to be fully resolved and this is a very average book for me.

The Glovermaker's Daughter ~ Shari J Ryan ~ Blog Tour

THE GLOVEMAKER'S DAUGHTER

by Shari J. Ryan

Release Blitz

Release Date: September 18, 2023

Genre: Historical fiction
Trope: World War II

Synopsis

Paris, 1943. German soldiers drag me out onto the cobbled street and push me towards the waiting truck. I force myself to face forward as tears stream down my cheeks. If I look back, they’ll know. I can’t let them find my little girl…

Raya bends over a delicate glove in her beloved shop under the shadow of the Eiffel Tower. It’s the only place she still feels safe. When the Nazis snatched control of Paris, Raya knew she had to fight to protect the few things she had left. And so far, her support of the resistance has gone undetected.

But now, the door bangs open and three German soldiers lunge towards her. Raya’s blood turns to ice. Hauled onto the street, she struggles against their rough hands as they accuse her of organizing meetings in the tunnels below her shop.

Raya can think only of her baby daughter Amalia, hidden beneath the shop’s front desk. She has a heart-wrenching choice to make. Reveal Amalia’s existence and risk her life, or leave her behind and pray someone protects her. It’s the hardest decision she’s ever faced…

Transported to Ravensbruck concentration camp, every day is a desperate battle for survival. The only thing that keeps Raya going is the thought of being reunited with her blue-eyed, innocent baby girl.

But in the darkest of places, is the power of a mother’s love enough to keep Raya alive until she can see her daughter again?

An unputdownable and totally heartbreaking World War Two page-turner about sacrifice, the powerful and unbreakable love of a mother, and a glimmer of hope amongst the never-ending darkness of war. Fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Nightingale and The Choice will be gripped.

When it comes to historical fiction with an unique perspective, Shari J Ryan is one of the best and that continues to be true in The Glove Makers Daughter.

This story follows Raya (and Nicholas) in alternating time lines through the German occupation of Paris to the end of WWII. Ms Ryan paints a vivid picture that lets us experience the trepidation of sheltering Jewish friends, the fledgling resistance, and the reality of being a young French woman without the protection of family. Readers should experience this well written story for themselves, so I won’t go into too many details.
I will say that the thing that kept this from being a 5 star read was mainly at the end - and these are probably personal preference deals. There was a slight rushed feel to the very end that didn’t seem right after the pacing from the rest of the book.

Stories like this, even while fiction, are important to keep the reality of what happened during WWII alive in the minds of society. These individual stories represent real people and we owe them a debt to remember and never let similar things happen again.

BLURB:

Love wasn’t the daily special when a grumpy small-town baker delivers a baby in his bakery. Now, all he can think about is that sweet bundle and her tempting single mother.

Having a baby in a bakery gives new meaning to taking the bun out of the oven.

I’d been in Curmudgeon Bakery for one of those lemon baby-Bundt cakes I’d been craving since I found out I was pregnant.

The draw had nothing to do with the baker himself. Tall, tatted, and edgy, looking more like a biker than a man who makes baked goods. I hardly knew him other than taking a tumble in a rainstorm in front of his shop . . . and then tossing myself at him after he rescued me.

We shared a moment but it’s not what you’d think.

Months later, he delivered my baby among his cookies and cakes. Talk about a second chance encounter.

Then he whips up a plan to pretend to be my baby’s father, and everything heats up from there.

My body.

My heart.

My willingness to accept a perfect stranger’s kindness despite him telling me over and over he isn’t who I think he is.

I beg to differ.

He’s that sugary drizzle on a citrus-flavored, guilty pleasure that’s bad for the hips, but together—him, and me, and baby—we’re the perfect blend of ingredients that might do all our hearts some good.

If you enjoy mature couples and a good redemption story, then LB Dunbar and Sterling Heat is the book for you. This is a book that introduces us to a new community and a new family, the Slyvers, and starts with the youngest brother Sebastian.

Sebastian has a history and baggage as he is making progress in rebuilding his life and his bakery. Then Enya literally stumbles into his life. I loved watching these two fall into each other and the magnetic connection that drew them together even when they both tried to resist.

Ms Dunbar does an excellent job of weaving the insecurities that both Sebastian and Enya struggle with into their interactions and creating the tension that will eventually explode between them. Sterling Heat would have been a compelling story if it ONLY centered around the emotional tug of war Sebastian and Enya were dealing with as they navigated dueling beliefs and desires. An intrigue element pushed this from compelling to interesting and a book that I couldn't put down!

As this is the first book in a new series, there is an element of world building here too. The secondary cast focuses strongly on the Sylver siblings and I loved the banter and support they provided. I am curious to see what adventures may be in store for them!
