young couple in love, studio shot
From New York Times bestselling author Katy Regnery comes a brand new series set on Blueberry Lane! The Director and Don Juan is the second of four books about the Philadelphia-based Story sisters who are all on the look-out for love. Heiress Alice Story left her father's company three years ago in a blaze of glory, inviting all of his employees to jump ship and join her, but only one accepted her offer: mail room clerk, Carlos Vega. While Alice spent the next three years getting her own company off the ground, Carlos became her indispensable right-hand man -- executive assistant and office manager, loyal counsel and trusted co-worker. And all the while, they were quietly falling in love with each other. When Alice is offered a lucrative business deal in Puerto Rico, island-born Carlos is the perfect person to accompany her on her trip as translator, but as they travel together from Philadelphia to Santo Domingo to Ponce, two unlikely co-workers will discover that during their three years working together, their feelings for each other have grown far deeper than they ever could have guessed. And though business-minded, proper Alice will try her very best to ignore the longings of her heart, scorching hot, insanely sexy Boricua, Carlos, has no intention of letting her go. ***

Elizabeth's Review

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

A fun story that challenges gender roles as well as society's expectations when it comes to love.
Alice left her father's company when she realized that he was never going to give her a fair shake. Carlos was the one employee who went with her.

These two are very easy to like and I loved that their romance was a slow burn that they didn't even realize was happening until a catalyst removed the blinders.

Alice had a laundry list of why things between them wouldn't work and Carlos had his work cut out in convincing her otherwise.
I appreciated that she was a strong female character, but that we could also see her vulnerability and that they discovered team work can work other places besides the office.

Ms. Regenery is an author that has been on my TBR for a while and I am so glad I finally got to read her work.

Synopsis

Family.
Everyone has one.
Some are close.
Some are dysfunctional.
Some are simply gone.

Nine-year-old Shae Black entered the Witness Protection Program after the murder of her father, mob boss Luca DiMarco. New name. New identity. And a ready-made family that had no idea who she really was.

Fourteen years later, a letter from a ghost thrusts Shae back into the life she was forced to leave behind. As secrets unravel, revealing unexpected truths, Shae sees an opportunity to avenge her father’s death by destroying patriarch Sal Ambrosi, the man responsible for her father’s murder. Getting to the heart of the family will be difficult, but nothing and no one is going to stop her—not even the heirs to the Ambrosi family empire.

She’s prepared for the two brothers, Dante and Rex, to put up a fight, but she isn’t at all prepared for the danger they will bring to her life and her heart.

One will love her.
One will hate her.
One will vow to protect her.
One will vow to kill her.

All in the name of family.

Excerpt

“So, Shae, tell me a little about yourself.”

“Really? You want to talk?”

I chuckle. “You sound surprised.”

“Because I am.”

“What’s wrong with getting to know the woman I’m about to fuck?”

“Are there things about me you’re dying to know?”

You have no fucking idea. “As a matter of fact, there are.”

She studies me for a moment and tips her glass, finishing off what’s left of her wine. She sets it on the counter, strides across the kitchen, and opens the curtains, revealing a breathtaking view of the Chicago skyline.

With her back to me, she takes a deep breath and when she exhales she says, “Let’s have it.”

In one gulp, I finish off my wine and set the glass next to hers. I slowly walk across the room, enjoying the view in front of me as I do.

And I’m not talking about the skyline. The dips and valleys of Chicago’s cityscape may be impressive, but they have nothing on Shae’s soft curves.

Her skirt is a little rumpled, her blouse untucked, and her long, dark hair falls in waves around her shoulders. Her body draws mine like a magnet, and when I step into her, pressing my chest against her back, she doesn’t move. There is no gasp of surprise, no stiffening spine, she’s just here in this moment with me.

“Let’s start with your favorite color.”

“Purple.” Her voice is shaky, and when I run my finger down the back of her neck, she tilts her head, allowing room for my lips to graze the silky smooth skin.

“Favorite food.”

“Italian.”

“Great choice.” I kiss a path along her shoulder. A shiver runs through her, and I smile against her skin. “Favorite sport.”

“Baseball.”

“Mine too. Favorite team?”

“C-Cardinals.” I nip at her soft skin, and Shae sucks in a breath. “What was that for?”

“I’m a Cubs fan.”

“That’s okay; I forgive you.”

I nip her again, run my tongue along the side of her neck, and blow lightly. Goosebumps race across the creamy skin.

“You’re so responsive, Shae. I can’t wait to see what else I can get your body to do.”

She takes a shuddery breath, and I can tell by the flutter of her pulse against my lips that my words excite her.

“What did Erin mean when she said you hadn’t been with a man in quite some time?” She doesn’t immediately respond, so I turn her in my arms.

Her cheeks turn the prettiest shade of pink as she looks at the floor. “You caught that, huh?”

“It’s pretty much all I’ve been thinking about.”

She looks up. “Really? Why?”

Fuck if I know. Maybe because I like you and the thought of other men touching you makes me want to strangle someone. But telling her that now probably isn’t the smartest idea, so I just shrug.

“Don’t know. Just curious is all.” Shae still doesn’t answer, and I can feel the air around us growing thick. “How many men have you been with?”

Her eyes grow as wide as saucers. “I don’t see how that’s any of your business.”

“It’s not. But I want it to be.”

Glancing down, she fiddles with the hem of her blouse. “Not many.”

“How many is not many?”

She tries to look away, but I don’t let her, so she opts to fold her arms over her chest. A universal defense mechanism. She thinks she’s shielding herself, but all she’s doing is fluffing her tits, putting all of that smooth, silky skin on full display. “I’m not a virgin, if that’s what you’re wondering.”

“I never questioned whether you’re a virgin.”

“Good, because I’m not,” she says firmly, and then her voice trails off. “I’m just not that experienced.”

“How inexperienced?”

Finally frustrated, she throws her arms out to the side. “Why does it matter?”

Running my hand up the back of her head, I thread my fingers through the silky strands of her hair. Something I’ve wanted to do since the moment I laid eyes on her. Gripping it tight, I tug and her head dips back. She looks up at me, her eyes smoldering, and I wonder what else she’d let me do.

“Because I want to fuck you, and I’m not a gentle man, Shae.”

Sucking her bottom lip between her teeth, she bites gently as I wait for her to respond. Something…anything would be good. Then she looks at my mouth, and what happens next isn’t at all what I’m expecting.

“We should probably kiss first.” She smiles coyly, and I do the only thing I can do.

I kiss her.

I struggled a little bit with how to rate this book. On one hand, I loved it and enjoyed the characters immensely. On the other hand, it was not the book the blurb advertised it to be.
Is this a romantic suspense? Yes, but the blurb implies that our heroine seeks the Ambrosi family out with nefarious intentions and ..... well, we are keeping this spoiler free. Yes, Shae and Rex ultimately come from rival families - But, they don't know that when they meet.

If you are looking for a high angst level romantic suspense that has you on the edge of your seat for the the whole read, then this would not be the book you are looking for. If you are looking for a well written and entertaining story, then keep going....

Black has a strong heroine who has dealt with much more than someone in their early 20's should have had to, but she is still open to love. Rex is a alpha hero with a sweet side that makes you swoon. The seconding cast is interesting and I would love to know some of their back stories, I am especially intrigued by JJ. There is some mystery and a dash of suspense and intrigue to keep everyone on their toes.
I am still a fairly new reader of Ms. Grayson - this is only the third book of her's that I have read (I think) and I am impressed with the range and variety of her work. Each work has been very unique and I look forward to ready more - not only of the Bloodlines series (if this turns into that), but of her work in general.

Mr. Rich by Virna DePaul~ New Release

She finds a wallet (not a shoe), and he’s a billionaire (not a prince), but this time, Cinderella’s turning the tables. . . .

 Julia:
Shilling samples at a grocery store isn’t exactly my dream job. Yet here I am, tray in hand and fake smile plastered on my face. The one highlight is seeing him. I don’t know his name, but if I did, I’d scream it during the naughty dreams he inspires. He’s crazy handsome, all confidence and an air of power. He’s never said a word to me. Never even looked in my direction. Then one day he literally falls at my feet. Now I have his wallet. I know where he lives. And I’ve found the nude photos of him online.

It’s not the bruschetta on her tray he really wants to taste. . . .

 Bastian:
I’ve dated models, doctors, and CEOs, but something about Julia Rominger has me intrigued . . . and more than a little aroused. Maybe it’s her lush curves driving me wild. Or the fact that she has no problem telling me to go to hell. Either way, she’s seen me at my worst; I want to hit her with my best. I know where to touch, where to kiss, and just how far to push to drive her crazy. Soon, however, pleasuring Julia isn’t enough. I want to possess her. I need to make her mine. And I’ll fight to the bitter end to win her heart.

This was a cute, fun read.
Mutual insta- attraction between a billionaire and a grocery store sample girl leads to a series of unusual events - including said sample girl being courted by not one, but two interesting men.
Julia and Bastien are characters that are easy to like, but I have to confess to liking him just a little bit better. Julia was a character that I was a smidge frustrated by because she kept putting herself down and being willing to take less than she wanted because it was what she thought she deserved.
Having said that, one of the things I enjoyed about Mr. Rich was Julia's evolution. Bastien's was a more of a case of needing to get out of his own way, so it didn't seem as significant.
I like the premise that these two were a case of the right person at the wrong time and that they eventually would have the chance to get it right.
Mr. Rich is a well written and quick read - great for a quick fix of cinderella-esque romance.

BOOK BLURB:

Another wingmen meets his match and this time it's scandalous.

Carter Kelso is a man with a plan. And goats.

Ashley Kingston is a woman with a reputation.

Can he earn back her love before their past catches up with them and destroys everything?

On the island, my last name is synonymous with scandal. With a notorious father and a famous brother, I've been on the sidelines of our small town's gossip circle for years. Nothing to see here. Just a man and his goats, happily going through life. Not a care in the world. Too bad it's all lies.

I'm tired of trying not to be in love with Ashley Kingston, our very own island jezebel. Some people think she's a slut. They think they know her. They're wrong. Screw them.

Reputations can be deceiving. I should know.

Small Town Scandal is a second chance romance standalone novel and the fifth book in the Wingmen series. You do not have to read the other novels first.

ADD SMALL TOWN SCANDAL TO GOODREADS

EXCERPT:
“Worried about history repeating itself?” Ashley meets my eyes.
“With you?” Yes, please.
She gives a slight nod in response.
“Never. I’m not some dumb eighteen-year-old kid with his head up his ass. I’m not my father. You’re not your parents. We’re adults now.”
She gazes out over the water for a moment. “I don’t see any, do you?”
“Any what?” I scan the sky.
“Flying pigs.” Her smile is shy and more vulnerable than I’ve seen in years.
I bump her shoulder again with mine. “Stranger things have happened.”
“Says you.” She returns the pressure with her arm against mine with a brief nudge.
“You mentioned dinner? Were you serious?” I circle back to her comment before my random business idea.
“We both gotta eat. Plus, the baristas can close up for me. It’s good responsibility for them to have.”
“You trust them?”
“I do. If they mess up, then it’s a learning lesson for all of us.”
“When did you get to be so wise?” I almost say smart, but she’s always been smart. Definitely has the brains along with the body and the looks. She’s the trifecta. With a cherry on top.
I pick up the stem and then toss it over to the other bench.
“Hey! I thought that was my present,” she protests.
“You want a cherry stem that I’ve tongued into a knot?”
“Your tongue’s been in my mouth, so it’s kind of the same thing.”
We both stare at the stem laying on the concrete in who knows what combination of fluids and dirt.
“I’ll make you another one.”
“I have a better use for your tongue.” She surprises me with a small hop to peck my lips.
We’re going to need some rules of engagement. A SWOT of our own.
First, we need to stick to well lit, public places.
Second, we shouldn’t be alone.
Ten minutes of sitting on a bench together and certain parts of my body are coiled and ready to spring into action, not caring it’s daylight and a few hundred bored people are sitting in their cars with nothing better to do than watch us.
Nah, they’re all on their phones. She could probably straddle me on this bench and no one would pay any attention.
Damn, if I’m not tempted to test this theory.
“Are you coming?” She’s halfway back to the coffee hut.
“I wish,” I mumble, dipping my head and mentally cursing myself for setting limits.
Ashley’s smile says she probably heard me and agrees.

3.25 stars - Slightly better than average

This is a cute book and I appreciated the fact that is was told from Carter, the hero's point-of-view. He had a self-depreciating sense of humor that made him easy to like.
Unfortunately, even though I liked Carter, I had a hard time connecting to him or to his love interest, Ashley. This is my first read by Ms. Prescott, so I hope that some of that missed connection has to do with the fact that this is book #5 in a series. From the way other couples were woven into the story, I have a feeling there is a lot of back story that I missed by starting the series here.
Even with the missing connection, this was still a story that I enjoyed reading and found myself laughing with and rooting for the characters. There were parts of Ashley's story line that felt a little unresolved, but since her brother is a prominent secondary character here, I'm guessing some of those issues may appear in his book since they impact him too.
If you have read Ms. Prescott and this series in the past, this is one that you will probably enjoy. If you are new to her work like I was, you might want to find one of the earlier books in the series to start with.

EXCERPT #1

My shoulder hurts like hell but it’s worth the throbbing pain to finally hold her this close. I’ve been dying to do it since I found her in that filthy basement. I can’t explain it. The way she makes me feel inside. Something has shifted. Something that wasn’t there before. I’d been born with an instinct to protect but I’d never had a feeling quite like this. The irrefutable need to not only protect this beautiful, lost creature but claiming her seems almost as peril. It’s what had me leaping in front of that bullet to save her. It’s what has me desperate to hold her right now. Because if I look at those supple lips for another fucking minute, I’m going to possess them in a way that already scares the shit out of me. Selena pulls away to meet my gaze once more. “Oh, I’m sorry, did I hurt you?” she asks, dragging her fingers beneath her wet eyes. “I’m good,” I tell her and she smiles shyly. That tug in my chest grows stronger, my cock twitching with the curl of her lips. The greedy bastard hasn’t let up either. Not since she was bent over me in a pool of my own blood, begging for me to hang on. She thought I was dying, I thought I’d died and gone straight to heaven. Now she’s sitting here in front of me, looking broken and lost and the only thing I can think of is burying myself so deep inside of her nothing bad can ever touch her again. “The nurse brought me some clean clothes earlier. Would it be okay if I took a shower?” “Yeah, do whatever you need to do. I’m not going anywhere.” She giggles and the sound trickles down my spine in a wave of heat. “I won’t be long,” she reassures me. “Do you need anything before I go?” I shake my head and, almost reluctantly, she eases from the bed. She retrieves the small plastic bag on the couch then walks into the bathroom, shutting the door quietly behind her. When I hear the water switch on, I sink down farther into the bed, exhaling loudly. Closing my eyes, I do my best not to think about Selena naked in the shower or the fact that she’ll be staying with me at the ranch. A knock sounds before Reid pokes his head inside. “Hey, I was hoping you would be awake. How’re you feeling?” “Sore as fuck.” He walks closer to the bed, taking a seat next to me, looking tired and haggard. “How’s Cassidy?” He blows out a long breath, relaxing back in the chair. “She’s going to be okay. They’ll release her in a few days. Bodie came by to talk to her.” Bodie is Cassidy’s brother and Reid’s former best friend. They thought he was murdered six years ago but turns out he’d been hiding out in Mexico, working for the DEA and infiltrating Del Marco’s cartel. “How’d that go?” “I’m still pissed but I gotta find a way to make peace with this shit, for Cassidy at least.” “You’ll find a way.” “When are they letting you out?” “Sometime in the morning,” I answer. “You call Mom and Dad?” “Not yet. I’ll wait until I get home. If I call now she’ll be on the first flight out here.” He nods. “She’ll be pissed when she finds out later.” “I’ll deal with it. I got other shit to worry about. I’m taking her back to Pop’s with me.” “You think that’s a good idea?” he asks, eyeing me. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?” “Well, for starters, she’s the drug lord’s stolen daughter.” “Dead drug lord.” “You really want to get technical right now? Not to mention, she’s only nineteen.” “What does her age have to do with it?” “Nothing. Listen, I just think you need to take a step back and look at this. You really have no idea the trauma she has been through and how much help she will need. Hell, you need all the help you can get right now, too. I just think you should tread carefully.” “You think I don’t know that?” I snap, my patience wearing thin. I see his point but I don’t care either. She needs help, and I want to be the one to give it to her. Reid stands up. “I’m just looking out for you, brother. Let me know when they release you.” I nod then he turns to leave. Once the door shuts, the bathroom door opens. “Is everything okay?” she asks. Her dark hair hangs loosely around her shoulders, damp from the shower. “Yeah, why?” “I thought I heard someone in here and you sounded upset.” “Reid stopped by, brother shit.” She nods. “I always wanted a brother or a sister,” she says sadly, sitting down in the chair next to me. “Is he your only sibling?” I shake my head. “Hardly, I have five brothers and a pain in the ass sister.” Selena beams, her smile making the room brighter. “I would love to hear about them.” She tucks her feet into the chair next to me, leaning in closer. Goddamn, that voice, soft and sweet, her sexy Spanish accent curling around every word. Her eyes are locked firmly on mine, and I suck back a shot of air, clenching the sheet covering me. I know I should listen to my brother. I should be careful with her, not only because of what she’s been through but because she’s so young and vulnerable, and far too pure for the likes of me, but I can’t let her go. And something in my chest tells me I never will.

I really debated how to rate this book. It falls under the category of "I liked it, but... " for me.
I like Selina and Justine, they make a great couple. But, having not read the prior two books of the series, I felt as if I was missing information.
I overall had a feeling of being tossed into the story and having to figure things out a little bit as I went along. Which probably would not have been the case had I read the other two books first.
There was also a detail/inconsistency issue that kept bugging me - and it didn't have to do with our main characters! It had to do with Justin's grandparents and how long they'd been married. There was a reference to 56 years, but also a reference to 1942, and one to Pop's being deployed to Vietnam before they married. It's a small thing, but it kind of followed me through the story every time I saw Pop's. I think part of the issue is that I see my own Dad as the Pop's character (similar personality, Vietnam era veteran)
It's a little thing, but it did pull me away from the story.
If you are looking for a fast paced story with a great couple and a heart stealing alpha male, then this is definitely one for you. It's a great quick read. I really want to go back and read books 1 and 2 to get to know this family better.

Wonderful story of two women in very different stages of life and how one very special house and community bring them through their struggles and through to the other side.
I really liked both Heather and Cara. Life had not been easy for either of them in various ways. Heather's journey was on of blossoming; she's 26 and semi independent for the first time. We see her come into her own as she conquers fears, tries new things, accomplishes what she set out to do and even falls in love.
For Cara, at 50, her journey is one of being knocked down and picking herself back up again.
These two come together and end up helping each other find the right path for themselves. There are a lot of life lessons for everyone and it was a wonderful sojourn to the Beach House.

What I've been reading

The Hard Truth About SunshineThe Hard Truth About Sunshine by Sawyer Bennett

My rating: 5 of 5 stars - One of the Best

Review Copy received via a group read

What a way to break a book funk! I've had about 2 weeks where nothing I've read has really hit the spot, but with this perfect Memorial Day read, Ms. Bennett squashed the book funk.
Four captivating characters, and unlikely companions, head on a cross country trip to complete the bucket list of a dying teenage cancer patient.
Along the way, Christopher (an injured veteran) gets a new lease on life as some of his own issues are put in a new perspective.
This is a well written and challenging read that made me think about several different issues. While a big departure from Ms. Bennett's typical work, this does have her hallmark excellence and is one I'd very much recommend.

Abe: Four In Hand (Ties of Steel, #1)Abe: Four In Hand by M.J. Fields

3.25 stars - Slightly Better than Average

I stumbled on this as a free read recently and enjoyed it.
This is the beginning of a new series, but also a spin off, so there are there is a lot of back story to the secondary characters that we don't see here.
This is a pure fun, sexy time read- there is some character development and relationship building but not a ton - so keep that in mind as you go in. Also, remember these characters are 22 and 26 and they do act like it act times.

The Manny (Locked & Loaded, #1)The Manny by Susan Ward

My rating: 2 of 5 stars - Below Average read

This is book where I think how you feel about it really depends on what you are looking for.
I found this to be a sex fest that teased at character, plot, and relationship development, but never really dived in to deliver on any of those things.
I found the principal characters to be shallow and the main love interest of the story wasn't even introduced until more than halfway through the book.
The sheer amount of sexy time involved had me skimming several times because it became over the top. This might be the right book for someone, but it wasn't for me.

This is a sweet story of two people who on paper don't belong together finding exactly what they need when they weren't looking.
I like both Annie and Cash and really liked them together. The fact that they both made jumping to conclusions an Olympic sport was my one big complaint and the thing that kept this from being a 4 star read for me.
Overall, this is well written and a unique take on the city girl/cowboy theme. All of the characters are well developed and the potential stars of future books are woven into the story in such a way that getting to know them does not detract from the main couple.
While Annie and Cash's romance takes center stage, they each have an interesting sub plot to add flavor.
I'm looking forward to reading the other books in the Maverick Junction series.

NEAREST THING TO HEAVEN
Maverick Junction #2
Lynnette Austin
Forever Yours

THE COWBOY AND THE CITY GIRL

Sophie London hates Texas. The longhorns freak her out and the wide-open spaces are more unnerving than a Chicago alleyway at night. But Sophie wouldn’t miss her cousin’s wedding for the world—even if it means returning to Maverick Junction . . . and to the dangerously irresistible Ty Rawlins.

A single father of rambunctious triplet boys, Ty knows trouble when he sees it—and Sophie’s got it written all over her. Yet he’s never been able to stop thinking about her, after their one brief meeting. Maybe fate is giving him a second chance. But if Ty wants Sophie to swap her stilettos for cowgirl boots, they’ll each have to face the past—together.

Elizabeth's Review Nearest Thing to Heaven by Lynnette Austin

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Normally when I read a series, I get super exited about book 1 then struggle a little bit with book 2. That was so not the case with Nearest Thing to Heaven. I think I may have enjoyed this book a little bit more than the first because this book dives right in almost immediately after then end of Book 1 and you get more story vs world building. That said, if you haven't read the first book, I would not recommend starting here.
Nearest Thing to Heaven is a sweet story about a second chance at love (for the hero) and self discovery (for the heroine). We meet Ty and Sophie in the first Maverick Junction book and meet up with them again when they are together for Cash and Annie's wedding. Fate definitely plays a part in shoving these two together and the results are sweet and a little steamy.
This is a well written series continuation. Ty and Sophie are both very easy to like and the secondary cast is active and equally fun. Ty's the boys are scene (and heart) stealers! There is a mild suspense element, but no big surprises. This has definitely left me hungry for the series conclusion!

Having grown up in a small town, that's where her heart takes her—to those quirky small towns where everybody knows everybody...and all their business, for better or worse.
