Excerpt: Until Jax

“Thank you again for taking me.” Pulling my eyes from the road for a brief moment, I look at Ellie. Her head is resting against the window, her legs pulled up onto the seat, tucked near her ass, and her arms are wrapped tight around them. One thing I’ve noticed about her over the last few hours is she’s always wrapping her arms around herself or tucking her body into a tight ball. It’s like she’s forcing herself to stay together. “I told you I got you, baby,” I say gently, wanting more than anything to take her hand in mine, but every time I touch her, she freezes up like she’s waiting for me to strike out at her, and I would be lying if I said that didn’t piss me the fuck off. It does; it feels like a slap in the face every time it happens. “I know,” she whispers, and the tears I hear in her voice cause a sharp pain in my chest. Fuck. “This is the turnoff.” Her feet go to the floorboard and her hands to the dash as she sits up taller, moving her face closer to the windshield. We drive up a long dirt driveway with forest and the occasional broken down car on each side. When we make it to the top of the hill, a singlewide trailer comes into view, with junk cars and garbage piled up out front. As soon as I come to a stop, she opens her door and hops out before I can tell her to keep her little ass in the cab. I don’t even know how I’m going to deal with the range of emotions that have settled over me since seeing her for the first time. “Fucking Boom,” I mutter, getting out behind her and doubling my steps until I’m able to reach her side, where I wrap my hand around her waist and pull her closer to me. She’s so fucking tiny that the top of her dark head sits right at my chest. So fragile, from her too soft skin to her petite size. And she’s mine.

3.5 stars – Worth a Readers Time

I have to admit that Ms. Reynolds is a new other for me. I’ll go ahead and tell you that I enjoyed this book, but I would not recommend it as a place to start reading if you are new to this author. The addition of “Until Him #1” after the title is misleading. I thought this was the beginning of a series, but discovered from page one that wasn’t the case. It seems like to get the full effect of this book, you at least need to have read Until July (Until Her #1) if not the entire series starting with Until November. Now that my disclaimer is out of the way. I loved Jax and Ellie! I honestly have no idea how these two met, but Jax appears to be almost instantly attracted to Ellie and determined to help her and keep her safe. She is just as determined to try and stand on her own two feet. It was nice to see Ellie not behave like a victim even though it seemed like she had every excuse to and I appreciated that she was grateful to Jax without wanting to take advantage. Jax was a wonderful, studly, Alpha hero that it was impossible not to like. He treated Ellie like a queen from day 1, but he also seemed to be able to give her the freedom and space she needed. I also loved how his family just instantly welcomed her and took care of her too. There were a couple of places where I struggled with this book, but I really think a lot of it had to do with lack of information that is probably contained in other books of the Until series. If you are familiar with the other books, you will most likely love Until Jax.

Fight.
It’s an action some encourage and others dissuade. Since the day I was born, fighting has been instilled into my mind. Regardless of your opinion, it’s something we all do. At some point in time, consciously or subconsciously—either emotionally, physically, or spiritually—we struggle. Many will strive to withstand their battles, but only those who were born to fight will overcome them.
A true fighter lacks weakness. They abstain from carelessness and refrain from trusting their opponents, but most importantly, they never accept defeat.
I am a true born fighter. Each second of every day, I fight. Rip the ones I love most away from me, I kill. If I’ve learned anything from this life, it’s to always expect the unexpected. As long as my heart continues to beat, and no matter the costs, I will be victorious.

Marry Me at Christmas ~ Susan Mallery ~ New Release

Wish upon a Christmas star with New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery's sparkling Fool's Gold romance! To bridal boutique owner Madeline Krug, organizing a Christmas wedding sounds like a joy—until she finds out she'll be working closely with the gorgeous brother of the bride, movie star Jonny Blaze. How will a small-town girl like her keep from falling for the world's sexiest guy? Especially with mistletoe lurking around every corner! Jonny came to Fool's Gold looking for normal, not for love. Happily-ever-after only happens in the movies. Still, nothing about this quirky town is quite what he expected, and "ordinary" Madeline is the most extraordinary woman he's ever met. Refreshingly honest, disarmingly sweet. Achingly beautiful. Planning the perfect wedding leads to candlelit dinners and strolls through snow-covered streets. And Madeline finds Jonny in real life even more captivating than her celebrity crush. But will the action star be brave enough to risk his heart and step into the role of a lifetime?

Review Copy provided by Author

Marry Me at Christmas is the latest entry into the Fool's Gold series and follows Madeline as she helps her Hollywood crush, Jonny, plan his sister's wedding. Both characters have appeared in other entries of the series, so they aren't strangers to us, but we don't know either of them very well. There aren't any big surprises. Jonny and Madeline are likable characters and neither has any big secrets or horrible baggage getting in their way. The story is sweet and follows a friends to lovers path where fear is the biggest conflict. Ms. Mallery delivers the well written book that her followers expect and combines romance with a sense of humor. If you have been following the Fool's Gold series, you'll love this quick visit back to town. Even newer guests to Fool's Gold will fit right in. We get glimpses of characters we love, but the supporting cast isn't so large to overwhelm newer readers.

Title: Letting Go (Keaton #1.5)
Author: B.A. Wolfe
Genre: New Adult Release Date:
September 28th, 2015
Cover Design: Perfect Pear Creative Cover

Synopsis:

Jason Bradley is a simple, country guy thrust into a life most wouldn't consider normal. He’s dealt with his share of heartbreak and pain, and now he keeps his secrets close to his heart to avoid getting hurt again. Living the only way he knows how. Until Cassandra Pierce crashes into his world. After a life-changing moment he never anticipated, he realizes that loving her is only the beginning. A whirlwind of days… Beautiful moments… Then it all comes tumbling down, and Jason learns that the hardest part of living…of loving…is letting go. This is Jason's story. **Letting Go is a Full Length Companion Novel to the Keaton Series and is told in Jason's (Jase) POV **

Excerpt

She moaned loudly, her hands splaying across my shoulders. "You make me so happy. I hope you know that. Thank you for giving yourself to me." "Thank you for letting me, for wanting me." No one had ever wanted me like she did. She held my cheeks and searched my face. "I'll never not want you, Jase. That's impossible." I knew exactly how she felt. Without another word, she sat up and playfully pushed my chest, wanting me back on the pillow. So I went with it and fell back as she climbed over me, a leg on either side. "So . . ." Her fingers coiled around the hem of my shirt, my heart thumping rapidly. "Do you remember when you said that I was yours?" I grinned. "I remember." A sexy smirk splashed across her face. "I might be yours, but do you know what else that means?" I folded an arm behind my head, while my other hand caressed her bare leg. "No, sweetheart. What does it mean?" Her body inched lower until our chests were touching and our heartbeats matched. Placing her mouth directly over mine, she whispered, "Mine, Jase. You're all mine, cowboy." I palmed the back of her head and growled, crashing my lips to hers, taking every ounce of Cassie I could. I was hers and she was mine and there was nothing that would ever change that. Even if tragedy ever struck down the road, I’d always still be a chapter in her life. One she’d never forget. No one could ever take that away from either of us.

I finished Letting Go earlier today and had to walk away and think about things a little bit before I could sit down and write about it. I have to confess to having a little bit of a love/hate relationship with this book… Letting Go is a companion to Away and tells Cassie and Jase’s story from his point of view. Away, especially the second half was an emotional read so I thought I was prepared for this book to be equally as emotional, but Ms. Wolfe managed to surprise me. Where the emotional impact of Away started later in the story, we are hit with it almost immediately this time because we learn Jase’s secret at the same time he does. My respect for Jase went up watching him deal with the situation, but I struggled with the way his mother handled things. I also found myself liking his brother, Dan, even though we don’t see him much after the first part of the story. I was thrilled with how Ms. Wolfe handled the telling of Cassie and Jase’s relationship in this book. She hit the things that really mattered and gave us a glimpse into what Jase was thinking, but managed to avoid a strict repeat of the story in Away. Even with knowing what was going to happen, I was not prepared for the wallop at the end of Letting Go – I can’t say much else without giving things away, but I will suggest a full box of Kleenex if you have even the smallest inclination to cry at books. (This is where the “hate” part of the reader/book relationship comes in. As much as I enjoyed this book, when I reread it, I probably will stop before the end.) This story hit home for me in a couple of different ways and I continue to be awed by the skill Ms. Wolfe uses while handling incredibly complex emotions. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to read this story from both Cassie and Jase’s points of view and am looking forward to reading Stay soon.

 About The Author-

B.A. Wolfe is a girl with a passion for reading and writing, and lives in the good old state of Colorado with her husband (her biggest cheerleader), and her two crazy min pin fur babies. These days, her life is anything but calm, and there isn't one thing she'd want to change. B.A. spends all her free time either furiously typing stories on her laptop or happily reading through her endless TBR on her Kindle. Her list of favorites would be long enough to fill a book, but most would likely fall under the romance category. She is a sucker for a good love story that makes her cry, and an amazing book boyfriend who will melt her heart.

Playing with Fire ~ Kate Meader ~ NEW RELEASE

From popular romance author Kate Meader comes the second novel in Hot in Chicago, a brand-new, sizzling series that follows a group of firefighting foster siblings and their blazing hot love interests! As the only female firefighter at Engine Co. 6, Alexandra Dempsey gets it from all sides: the male coworkers who think she can’t do the job, the wives and girlfriends who see her as a threat to their firefighter men, and her overprotective foster brothers who want to shelter their baby sister at all costs. So when she single-handedly saves the life of Eli Cooper, Chicago’s devastatingly handsome mayor, she assumes the respect she’s longed for will finally come her way. But it seems Mr. Mayor has other ideas… Eli Cooper’s mayoral ratings are plummeting, his chances at reelection dead in the water. When a sexy, curvaceous firefighter gives him the kiss of life, she does more than bring him back to the land of the living—she also breathes vitality into his campaign. Riding the wave of their feel-good story might prop up Eli’s flagging political fortunes, but the sizzling attraction between them can go nowhere; he’s her boss, and there are rules that must be obeyed. But you know what they say about rules: they’re made to be broken…

Elizabeth's Review

Review copy provided by publisher via Net Galley

Things continue to be Hot in Chicago for the Dempsey family of the Chicago Fire Department! After seeing how Alex Dempsey and Mayor Eli Cooper dealt with each other in Flirting With Fire (Book 1 of the series), I really wondered how Author Meader was going to get them together in this story.
The answer is an awesome combination of chemistry and sneaky. I initially didn’t like the lie Eli told Alex to get her to spend time with him, but after seeing them together for a while, I could forgive it. These two were adversarial with and attracted to each other from the day they met. Ms. Meader does a fantastic job of playing off both aspects to keep their interactions authentic to who their characters are.
We are also given great glimpses of who Eli and Alex are as individuals and some of the struggles they are dealing with, especially Alex as a female fire fighter. One of the things I enjoyed about this romance was the fact that we saw the couple together in normal “this is life” situations, so it was easy to root for them with the going got tough.
Playing with Fire is a continuation of the Hot in Chicago series, so we see characters from previous (and future) stories appear as supporting cast here. Having read earlier parts of the series would be helpful for background, but not necessary. Playing with Fire is a complete stand-alone work and Ms. Meader does a great job of providing enough background so that the roles of the secondary characters make sense without them overwhelming the story being told.
If you have any interest in a story with a strong female lead and a very alpha hero then this is definitely a book you want to pick up.

Consumed ~ J.C. Hannigan

Today's review comes from my "To Be Read" list. I read a really bad Advance copy of another book and needed something I had been looking forward to in order to get back in sync.

He's tall, dark, and deliciously handsome. Not exactly what Harlow is looking for. Her heart's still stuck on Iain Bentley. But it's been a painful struggle since she last saw him. Two years of silence and wondering; of desperate sleepless longing. And Jax Walker is a hard man to resist. Just as she's prepared to open herself to new love, Harlow's whole world is thrown into a painful spiral.

This was honestly one of those books that was completely made by the last 1/4 of the story. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the first 3/4, but it didn't get special until the end for me. Consumed picks up 2 years from the end of the story in Collide and follows Harlow through the beginning of her third year at University. She is still dealing with what happened to end her relationship with Iain and while she is functioning, she isn't really living. All of that changes when she meets Jax in a class they share. This is a well written book and I enjoyed getting to know Harlow better and she allowed herself to begin to "thaw" out and enjoy what Jax brought to her life. She is a complex young woman dealing with an emotional situation that would have been difficult for someone much older and she seemed to handle it well. I loved Jax. He seemed to see something in Harlow that wasn't visible to most. It was fun to watch him court her and care for her. When an unfortunate blast from the past blindsided Harlow, it was wonderful to see him stay with her and process the information versus running away. One of the things that seemed to happen between Harlow and Jax is that he seemed to "fix" her without necessarily trying to. He was there for her and supported her without taking over or thinking for her. There was also an element of suspense in the story, but it was subtle. Just when we thought Harlow and Jax might be headed for a happy ending, two big things happened. Iain reenters Harlow's life by accident and the suspense element of the story exploded in another horrible blast from the past. I liked and appreciated how both issues were handled. Consumed leaves us with an ending that realistically could finish the story and would leave me satisfied as a reader, but wondering what happens next in Harlow's story. It's a good thing I know there is another book in the story so we can find out.

What are you working on now?
Right now I'm about to begin work on a bonus chapter that will be released on my website the day She Part 2 comes out.
Do you get to write full time or do you also have a “day” job?
I am very fortunate to be able to write whenever I desire.
Favorite part of being an author?
This'll sound silly, but...writing is my favourite part. I love spending time with my characters, telling their stories.
Scariest part of being an author?
Hmm, probably the PR aspect of the industry. It was entirely new to me this time last year.
If you had $1 million to giveaway, what would you do with the money?
I'd do something with helping animals, getting them out impoverished, neglectful, harmless situations and freely/loving them.
One piece of advice to an aspiring writer?
Do it because you love it, not because you expect to make a profit.

Excerpt

Clack. Clack. Clack.

The angry clicks of high heels on linoleum thunders through the buzz of voices in the room, alerting me of our newest arrival before she even emerges from the hallway. I check off her name on my list and fold the paper, tucking it into the back pocket of my jeans. Lifting my eyes to the doorway, I await the notorious Victoria Larkin.

I’m not sure what I’m expecting.

Maybe a monster with bright red claws.

Perhaps a manlike woman with bulging muscles and a bowl cut.

What I don’t expect is a gorgeous, angry angel.

A blonde, blue-eyed woman, despite it being a casual, Saturday afternoon, fills the doorway with her fierce presence and perfectly styled hair. Whereas everyone else, including me, is wearing jeans and T-shirts, she’s overdressed and out of place in her white silky, long-sleeved shirt that’s tucked into her crisp, black pants. Her lips are blood red, as if she snacked on the ducks that live on the pond behind the community center before arriving and match her glossy, spiked heels.

Her nostrils flare in resentment as she surveys the room. Disdain paints her features as she makes quick work of eyeing up everyone in the room, clearly judging them before she meets them. I’m sure Bill seems like a dirty old man flirting with sweet Glenda. And Nate, probably appears to be some goofy goon as he guffaws at a joke Claudia tells him.

The way she lifts her nose in the air in a haughty manner has me bristling with irritation. What she doesn’t see is Bill, the man that used to cry at every session over the loss of his wife of twenty-three years, is finally beginning to smile and test the dating waters after three years since her death.

What she doesn’t see is Nate, a single father of three, who despite his laughter, aches for the loss of his wife Cindy in Afghanistan. He struggles each day to be mom and dad to his little girls.

What she doesn’t see is me, a psychology professor that teaches about the five stages of grief, but most days, I'm fighting depression and the self-loathing that threatens to swallow me up.

She may be sexy as hell—rockin’ the whole naughty librarian look—but her insolence grates on my nerves. Her holier-than-though attitude leaves a sour taste in my mouth and a desire to defend every single one of my friends to her.

When her sapphire eyes meet mine, relief washes over her features and I sit up to face the woman head on. She ignores the diarrhea promised cookies Glenda offers and stalks over to me. With each step, I admire the way her full tits bounce with the fabric. She may be a bitch, but she’s a hot one.

Instead of introducing herself, she sits on the chair beside me and clasps her hands in her lap, lifting her chin high in the air. I watch with interest as she then glances at the time on her expensive watch and huffs.

“Jesus, I swear. People have no respect for other’s time. Time is money,” she gripes. “When a meeting begins at three, I expect it to begin at three. Not three-oh-five.”

I raise a dark brow at her and steal a glance at the clock on the wall that reads one minute till three.

“Bastards,” I agree, with a chuckle. “Some of us have shit to do.”
