Cowboy Up ~ Harper Sloan ~ New Release and Review

New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Harper Sloan returns with a passionate and breathless romance about the sparks that ignite when a cautious cowboy and a once-scorned woman open up to each other in the third installment of the Coming Home series.

As the eldest Davis, Clayton has always tried to lead by example. He takes his job as head of the family businesses seriously, making sure the farm and auto shop are running smoothly—along with keeping an eye on his brother and sister. For him, there's a time and place to let go of the control he holds with an iron grip. And with the way he grew up, coupled with disastrous end to his last relationship, he's just fine with his quiet, solitary life.

 Most of the time.

What he hadn't counted on was cute, quirky, shy bookstore owner, Caroline Michaels. She's the proverbial woman next door—well, the next town over, that is. Caroline hasn't lived an easy life, but after escaping an abusive ex, she's finally living it for herself. The last thing she ever expected was a one-night stand with Clay Davis, a night she can't stop thinking about.

So when she falls on hard times and Clay comes out of nowhere to her rescue, she realizes just how impossible it'll be to stay away from him. Now all she has to do is convince him to live a little...

Will Clay be able to give up the reins and finally settle down? And, more importantly, will Caroline muster enough courage to lasso him up?

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review copy provided by publisher via Net Galley

I have to confess that I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with this series - to the point that I debated reading this book. My desire to see how Clay’s story unfolded finally won out.

The start - what do I love?
The premise! The idea that three people terribly wounded by the failures of their parents can pull themselves up and be open to love.
Clay’s book is no exception- he and Caroline click right away and end up having a love story that makes both parties stronger.
Ms. Sloan does a great job with the alpha mail and his gooey center. Clayton is definitely a hero to swoon over.

My frustration-
The way dialogue in this series is written absolutely sets my teeth on edge. The author clearly establishes in each book that they are set in North East Texas. Having established that the setting is 1) in Texas 2) a semi- rural farming/ranching community and 3) a small town I find in unnecessary to have every sentence “spoken” to show the dropped g and a couple of other quirks the author has decided are indicative of the setting. Dialogue written this way is very difficult to read. I find it distracting because I want to get my editor's pen out and mark them up. There are certain words or phrases that should be written as spoke; like "darlin' vs darling," but, not all the time.
There are some other stereotypes thrown in that make me shake my head too, but those are easier to allow as author prerogative as this is a work of fiction. (I should also note that I am actually a displaced Texan, not just a cranky reader with a itchy red pen.)

Specific to this book and what I liked about it -
I loved getting to catch up with Maverick, Quinn and their other halves. It was nice to get glimpses of how their stories continue to play out.
I loved Caroline and her evolution into a stronger heroine and it was nice to see a more robust character from Clayton; not to mention his sweet protective side.

We also meet two new secondary characters Luke and Lucy - I am definitely curious to see what happens with them in the future.

I love to write about enduring love, soul-deep love, in as real a setting as I can make, but with big smooshy HEAs. I believe in diversity, open-mindedness, and inclusion. Team Player: A Sports Romance AnthologyElizabeth's Review

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy provided by Authors

Oh my gosh - what a great combination of much loved authors and several that are new to me. Every story here has a hero (or heroine) involved in sports and all are novella length. Each story here is enjoyable and many left me wanting to know more about the characters, the series, or the author. Below are thoughts on each story:

Cross -
This is a prequel of sorts to Ms. Locke's most recent full length novel, Crank. It's a cute second chance romance featuring the drool worthy Gibson boys as secondary characters.
Cross and Kallie were high school sweethearts, but he needed to grow up, so she left. This is a quick, sweet story about 2 people being the right one for each other, but needing to wait for the right time as well.
If you have read Crank, you will enjoy seeing everyone. If the Linton world is new to you, then this is a great place to get started.

The End Zone-
This was a super cute friends to lovers/college romance. Jolie and Sage were awesome together from the get go and the author did an awesome job of getting them on the same page romantically. I especially love the outing of the “bad girl!”

Slapped Into Love -
Super cute story about a pro hockey player who meets his match! Both Ryan and Tamara are super cute. This story made me want to invest in the other books of the series.

Long Shot -
Kennedy Ryan's entry to the anthology packs an emotional punch into a short novella. Avery and Decker are a case of meeting the right person at the wrong time. Fast forward 10 years and their re-connection is very sweet and makes me look forward to her new series.

Out of formation- This is one that I would have loved to have seen more of! Both main characters are intriguing- esp given the potential complexities of the age difference between the two. I would have loved to know what happened between them finally getting together and the happily ever after epilogue!

Sweeping the Series -
This one had me a little worried! Erica and Ren spent a year together then she left, he behaved badly and 2 years later she is the PR person assigned to clean up his mess. The author really had the HEA of this one in doubt until the core of their issue was revealed and dealt with. There was definitely an “I love you, but I don’t want to” dynamic here.

Back in the game -
Oh my gosh; Calder is just too sweet! A hot, hunky hockey player who is an awesome dad? Sign me up! Add in a sassy heroine and super funny text
exchanges and you have a great little book.

Yard Sale -
A sexy read full of surprises!

Sin Bin -
A super fun addition from Mandi Beck’s new series about a college hockey team! Stella is the starting pitcher for the softball team when she meets pro hockey player Jason. A super hot weekend against their better judgement leads to a big surprise several months later. I loved Jason’s reaction and how these two ended up working together!

One Good Man -
Set in Vietnam era Paris, this was a touching story. This one hit home for me, especially since 2017 is considered the 40th Anniversary of the US entering the Vietnam War. This is a different take on a sports romance, but so worth the read.

Man Flu ~ Shari J Ryan ~ Cover Reveal

Cover Designer: MadHat Books
Release Date: January 17, 2018

Synopsis

I was trying to live every woman's dream, except my reality has been nothing but a nightmare job and a divorce at the age of thirty-two. Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse, my ex-husband, Rick, moved in next door with his life-size Barbie doll. So, that's been fun. Then, life pitched me a curve-ball in the form of a retired major-league baseball player, Logan Grier. With his panty-dropping smile, he’s like an expertly photoshopped version of David Beckham, and he's single. Could life be perfect after all? Of course not. As always, there had to be a catch. Logan had a secret, and I couldn’t help feeling like the truth was dangling right in front of my face. With Rick’s daily agenda of torturing me, Logan has been an enticing distraction, despite the little fact that he’s my temporary employee. Plus, I didn’t exactly care that his flirty behavior may have been a plan to get in good with the boss. In any case, I was willing to toss a few balls with him, seeing as my playing field hadn’t had any action in over a year. That’s when it happened…my two worlds collided. Hot temp met the ex, and a full-on bromance was born, but that’s only the beginning. The “man flu” has come out of nowhere and hit both Logan and Rick with a virus they’re claiming to be worse than childbirth. In fact, they’re pretty sure their end is near. Will the “man flu” be the kiss of death, or will it be my window for an opportunistic change?

A fun quick read in the London Billionaire series.
This is definitely a character driven story with Nathan and Sophie being two that you want to get to know.
On the surface, Nathan is a typical playboy and that behavior (along with him not recognizing her) fuel Sophie’s idea that they are adversaries as well as neighbors. Until the fateful night Sophie catches her “dependable” boyfriend being anything but....
It was sweet watching these two fall in Love - especially since neither of them expected that to happen.
I think my favorite part of Mr. Dirty was that while Sophie and Nathan were busy being “casual” with each other, they also helped each other tackle and issues that were lurking and needed to be dealt with. Ms. Malone does an excellent job of tucking semi-weighty emotional issues into an interesting and sexy story.

About the Author

USA Today Best Seller, Nana Malone's love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense she "borrowed" from her cousin. It was a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana, and Nana was a precocious thirteen. She's been in love with kick butt heroines ever since. With her overactive imagination, and channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters. While she waits for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, in the meantime Nana works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as sassy and kick butt as she thinks she is.

This was definitely a fun and unexpected read. Holland has been drifting through life for the last 2 years and had a crush on Calvin from afar for the last 6 months.
Several unexpected events come together and lead to them progressing from a brief meeting to a marriage of convenience within a span of weeks and that’s when the story take on a life of its own.
I liked both Calvin and Holland. I found them both to be entertaining and interesting characters. I especially appreciated how their time together spurred on Holland’s much needed period of self discovery. I think she came out of the experience a much stronger person than when she went in.
The strong supporting cast helped shape this well written book. If I didn’t know that a duo was behind the Ms. Lauren pen name, I never would have guessed. The partnership is seamless and I would love to see what the future holds for Calvin and Lauren.

Lilac Lane (Chesapeake Shores #14)Lilac Lane by Sherryl Woods

My rating: 2 of 5 stars - Below Average Read

This is a case of I REALLY wanted to like a book, but just could not connect with it. I actually came very close to marking this book as DNF and moving on, but I hate doing that, so I plugged away.
Please don't take it to mean this is a bad book, it's not, it really is just a matter of me not connecting with the characters or the story. This is just a case of this not being the right book for me.

Desperate for a Duke (Desperate and Daring, #1)Desperate for a Duke by Ella J. Quince

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Take away the slightly corny title and you have a really fun and engaging book!
Heather and Fallon are a true love match in a time when that doesn’t happen for the noble class very often. Add in a destitute family, a case of mistaken identity, and a dose of intrigue and you have the makings for a good story.
I definitely enjoyed both characters and the supporting cast. This was a quick read and a little on the spicier side for a historical, but not over the top.
There was a slight bit of set up for book two in the series between supporting cast members and I am curious to see what happens next. I hope we will at least get glimpses of Heather and Fallon.

Forever a Soldier (Always a Cowboy, Book One)Forever a Soldier by Genevieve Turner

My rating: 3 of 5 stars - Average Read

I enjoyed Hank, Lale, and their story. It was a bit of a take of Beauty and the Beast - with Hank and his anxiety attacks playing the part of Beast.
The main thing that kept this from being a higher rated read was the zero to 100 mph on the physical relationship- the first truly intimate encounter these two had kind of came out of left field for me.
My other issue was the conclusion - it was a “wham, bam, thank you ma’am” here is everything is a pretty bow type that seemed as if the author suddenly realized she only had a certain number of pages left to wrap everything up.
Overall, an okay free read. I was entertained, but I don’t know if I want to read more of the series.

SYNOPSIS

From New York Times Bestselling Author, S.L. Scott, comes a ROMANTIC SUSPENSE STANDALONE that will have you on the edge of your seat and swooning over this ALPHA BILLIONAIRE.
Six foot three. Dynamic green eyes. Utterly irresistible.
Ethan Everest stole my breath the first time I saw him. He romanced me with skill, dazzled me with his charisma, and proceeded to steal my heart right after.
I might have fallen for his easy going smile the first time we met, but I fell for him the second time.
Honey-colored hair. Cherry-kissed lips. Captivatingly gorgeous.
Singer Davis was the first, and only, woman to ever intimidate me. She spoke to my heart with her wit, seduced me with her eyes, and became the only thing that made sense in a world that made none.
I let her slip through my fingers once. I won’t make that mistake twice.
Secrets broke us apart. Can a second chance bring us back together?

Slipping off my shoes, I dim the lights on the wall panel. I take my clothes off and hang them on a hook near the door before returning to the tub.
The tub, warm and inviting as I step in, eases my aching feet from my high heels and the tension in my shoulders. I pour some of the bubble suds and giggle. That was so cute and showed me a whole new side to Ethan—the at-home Texan who relates to his roots—instead of the strong, quieter, broodier man I see sometimes.
While the suds foam and the tub fills, I look out the window. The sky is clear up here. The buildings are far enough apart to avoid spying on neighbors. It’s like floating in heaven.
I hear his knock on the door, so I call, “Come in,” while making sure the bubbles cover all the important parts.
Ethan walks in with two glasses of champagne in one hand and the bottle in the other.
“You came prepared,” I note, leaning back on one side of the tub.
“I thought I might join you.” He waggles his eyebrows.
I giggle and reach for a glass. “Come on in,” I reply and wonder if he will really take me up on my dare.
He sets the bottle and his glass down on the side of the tub. His tie was removed before he came in and I notice his shoes are long gone, along with his jacket. When he starts on the buttons of his shirt, I sit up, scooping suds over me. “Wait, for real?”
“Yep. I think that tub’s big enough for the two of us.”
“But you said you don’t take baths.”
“I also said I’ve never used this one. Seems like an opportune time.”
“But I’m naked,” I say, worried about everything—his body naked next to mine, not shaving my legs before I went out tonight. My mind flickers through my flaws. Ugh. No. Just no. Not like that. That stuff should be shared in the dark of a bedroom under the influence of alcohol and desperate sex. We’re too sober for this. I’m too sober for this. What does he possibly see in me when he has women like Nicolina waiting?
He’s more than I’ve imagined, and in some senses, it scares me. He’s the sort of man women like Nicolina land. For once though, it was as if she saw me as competition. The feeling is exhilarating.
“Like I said, seems like an opportune time.”
His shirt is dropped, his undershirt following quickly behind. Good God Almighty. What does a guy who looks like that see in me? “I see you like to work out.” I clear my throat and want to bonk my head on the side of the tub for saying it out loud.
Chuckling, he says, “I have a gym down the hall. It’s how I relieve stress.”
“I thought that’s what sex was for.” I gasp and cover my mouth, wishing I could keep my crazy thoughts in my head where they belong instead of on my tongue. His eyes are heavy, a smirky smirk restraining a laugh. “God, you cannot let me talk when I’m nervous.”
“If this is what happens when you’re nervous, I’ll make you nervous more often.” His pants come down and my curiosity is answered. Tonight he’s in boxers. When he catches my eyes on his package, I’m thankful I’m wearing waterproof mascara because I immediately go underwater. Screw my makeup. It’s really the only way to keep my mouth in check at this point. I count to five and then pop back up. With my hands covering my boobs, I ask, “You’re really coming in?”
   “Yes, scoot over.”
   Good God Almighty.

Elizabeth's Review

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Copy Provided by Author

Everest is definitely one of the more unique books of 2017! It’s a second chance story with a major twist!
Ethan and Singer meet and almost kiss at a party... one year and several run ins later he finally makes a move and begins one of the most unusual courtships I’ve ever seen...
Ms Scott does an excellent job of weaving in the intrigue of Ethan’s last year into his budding friendship/relationship with Singer. I appreciated the effort he put into be “normal” when his circumstances were anything but that. I liked the way she handled his dramatic history - it added the character quirks that made Ethan who he was without going overboard and overshadowing his story with Singer.
I enjoyed these two together and how they seemed to make each other better than they were in their own. Add in a great secondary cast and a tragic test and the whole is a well written and enjoyable book. Ethan and Singer are characters that I’d love to see more of in the future.
