Review Round Up ~ October 30

New Releases:

Looking for a Cowboy (Heart of Texas #5)Looking for a Cowboy by Donna Grant

3.5 stars ~ Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

Looking for a Cowboy brings us back to a small north Texas town home to the East and Harper families we’ve gotten to know in previous books.

Our hero in this book is Cooper, a secondary character we’ve seen as his friends have found happily ever afters. He’s paired with Marlee, a PI in town to find a missing child.

This was an entertaining read with light levels of mystery and a fairly quick developing romance. As with the other books in the series, the large secondary cast gets involved to help solve the mystery portion and save the day. I enjoyed getting to know Cooper and Marlee as they worked together and hoped to find the happy ending those around them had.

Since this is the 5th book in the series, there some elements that might be confusing to a reader just joining in. I definitely recommend reading at least some of the previous books before diving into this one. I am looking forward to seeing if Jace, the last of the Four Horsemen gets a story

Copy received as a gift

I received this book as a gift and have discovered a new must read author!

Dexter and Hollie are two people who on paper have no business being a couple. Watching fate bring them together again and again to become friends and more was entertaining and sweet. I loved how Dexter could see Hollie’s potential and how she shined a light on things that he didn’t realize he needed.

There is an excellent secondary cast featuring Dexter’s lifelong friends. Getting to see glimpses of them made me curious about their stories. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more books in this series.

Code Name: Rook ~ Sawyer Bennett ~ New Release & Review

Code Name: Rook (Jameson Force Security, Book #6) Sawyer Bennett Release Date: October 27, 2020

Synopsis:
Being a highly skilled operative for a company like Jameson Force Security is exhilarating and important work…until it comes time to date. I like to keep my profession under wraps for a number of reasons. Some of what we do is top secret, most of what we do is dangerous, and more than one woman has tried to latch onto me because she was more enamored with what I do than who Cage Murdock really is. And since I’m more of a ‘here for the night’ than a ‘here for forever’ kind of guy, what’s the harm in a little white lie about my job? My harmless deceit has never failed me. Until now. Because I met the most amazing woman and did the unthinkable. I married her. And now my beautiful, unsuspecting, probably-going-to-leave-my-sorry-behind-when-she-finds-out-the-truth wife doesn’t know that I’m not a used car salesman like I told her when we met. As it typically does with lies, the truth is about to come out in a big way when Jaime unwittingly gets herself mixed up with some unsavory characters and I, along with the team at Jameson, have to intervene. Now I need to save my girl and hope I can save my marriage too. Let’s just say I have some serious explaining to do.

I know going into a Sawyer Bennett book that I am going to enjoy it and Code Name: Rook proves that to be true.

If you’ve been following the Jameson Force Security series, Cage is a character that we’ve seen before. It was fun to get to know him here in this somewhat lighter addition to the series.

We don’t see as much of the intrigue element in this installment of the series, but it’s fun to see Ms Bennett mix things up a little bit and see what happens when one of the Jameson guys tries to have a relationship with a normal person.

Jamie was a great leading lady and I appreciated how she reacted to the events that surrounded her and Cage’s relationship.

Add in a great secondary cast and this was a great read. I am curious to see what happens with some of the story lines we were teased with here.

Bet The Farm ~ Staci Hart ~ Cover Reveal

Guys! I'm so excited! Staci Hart has a brand new rom-com standalone coming January 26th! Bet the Farm is a heartfelt, flirty story of opposites attract and I cannot WAIT to read it! Mark your calendars and pre-order your copy today!

Amazon | AppleBooks | Kobo | B&N | Goodreads

Olivia Brent has one summer to save the dairy farm she just inherited.

But there’s one problem, and it’s not her lactose intolerance.

Jake Milovic.

The brooding farmhand has inherited exactly fifty percent of Brent Farm, and he’s so convinced the city girl can’t work the land, he bets she can’t save it in a summer.

Determined to prove him wrong, Olivia accepts what might be the dumbest wager of her life.

His strategy to win seems simple: follow her around, shirtlessly distracting her between bouts of relentless taunting. And it’s effective—if his dark eyes and rare smiles aren’t enough to sidetrack her, the sweaty, rolling topography of the manbeast’s body would do the trick.

What they don’t know: they’ll have to weather more than each other.

Mysterious circumstances throw the farm into disarray, and with the dairy farm in danger, Olivia and Jake have to work together. But when they do, there’s more to fear than either of them imagined.

Because now their hearts are on the line, and the farm won’t be the only casualty if they fail.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life -- a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey. When she's not writing, she's reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

All Scot and Bothered (Devil You Know, #2)All Scot and Bothered by Kerrigan Byrne

My rating: 4 of 5 stars ~ Would Recomend to a Friend

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

In Book 2 of the Devil You Know, we get to know the mysterious Ramsey and mathematician Cecilia - both secondary characters from the first book in the series.

Much like the first book, these two each have baggage hiding behind the facades they put on for every day life. I was fun to get to know these characters and see them challenge each other in the best of ways.

Full of intrigue, emotional evolution, and romantic tension this is a well written stand alone addition to a fun series. Ms. Byrne does and excellent job of building the series up while also creating a book fun of interesting characters that can stand on its own for new readers as well. I am very curious as to what may be in story for the third member of the Red Rouges.

This is a book I’ve been wanting to read since it hit my TBR via Netgalley. Life got in the way, but I was so glad to finally get to meet Mae and see her adventures.

This is a great combination of Groundhog Day and Christmas Vacation. It was interesting to see Mae figure out the world’s message to her - I don’t want to give much away, so you have to read the book!

There is a large cast of family in Holidaze, but the authors do an excellent job of focusing on the key players and the emotions involved in moving everyone forward.

Excerpt

Confusion riddles me. I stare at him for a long beat before finding my words. “My

parents died in a plane crash years ago.”

“Your freshman year in college, to be exact.” His features harden. “But they weren’t

your real folks.”

Horror ekes past my defenses. “What?”

Deep brown eyes holding a slight tinge of gold assess me. “That’s enough talk for now.

Ain’t got time to waste. Need to get you outta here.”

“As I said before, no, thank you.”

His gaze turns glacial. “You don’t understand—”

“I understand just fine! You’re obviously a criminal.” I gesture between him and where

Goliath remains standing. “And I want nothing to do with any of this. I pay my taxes. I return my

damn shopping cart at the store while the other assholes leave them in the parking lot. I’m not

someone who gets involved with people like you!”

He lets my outburst settle in silence. His lips press into a thin, irritated line before he

speaks in a low, deceptively subdued voice. “Can’t tell me that fancy professor brain of yours

ain’t dyin’ of curiosity ’bout your folks. That you ain’t eager as fuck to find out if your real dad

was murdered.”

I flick my eyes to the gun holstered at his side. “How do I know you’re not lying to me?”

“I always follow through on my end.”

“Right,” I say derisively.

His expression turns ferocious. “You questionin’ my word?”

Bravely, I lift my chin while maintaining eye contact. “I’d be stupid not to.”

He stares at me for a long moment. Wordlessly, he pulls his cell phone from his pocket

and scrolls through it. When he stops, his eyes flick up to mine, eerily watchful before he turns

the screen of the phone my way.

I suck in a sharp breath at the sight of the woman pictured on the screen, shock

ricocheting inside me.

“That’s Johanna Santilla. Your mom.”

Oh, my God. OhmyGod. I’ve heard of that name. Hell, anyone who hasn’t been living

under a rock has heard of the Santilla drug cartel. They originated in Cuba and began calling

Miami home over sixty years ago.

No photos exist of Johanna Santilla—at least none that have hit the internet. Photos of

her father, Carlos Santilla, have surfaced since his death, but they’ve often been grainy and

slightly pixelated, like the ones featured on Dateline NBC and other true crime television shows.

As for Johanna, however, once she took over the cartel for her father years ago, it’s as

though all photographic traces of her were somehow wiped clean. According to rumors, she

decided to keep a low profile when word got out about the FBI poking around in her business.

With criminology being my specialty, stories such as these fuel my brain, making me analyze the

psychological reasoning these particular individuals employ. I recall learning that once Nico

Alcanzar came into power, taking over for Salvatore Vega, Santilla allegedly grew more

secretive. Authorities couldn’t gather enough substantial evidence to pin any murders on her,

and she’s remained elusive to them ever since.

My eyes lock on the photo of Johanna Santilla standing beside her father, Carlos. But

that’s not what has me struggling to draw oxygen into my lungs.

“She looks…” I’m unable to finish, so stunned.

It’s as though I’m peering into my future. It’s undeniable that we have the same dark

hair and facial features.

“That viral video put you on everybody’s radar. One look at you and nobody could deny

you weren’t the goddamn spittin’ image of her.” His eyes flick to the phone a second before the

screen times out and goes dark. “Luckily, I’m the first to track you down.”

Well, I didn’t see that coming! What is that exactly? You get to read the book to find out!

That’s not much a review is it? Let’s try again.

In Truth in Pieces, Ms Boldt introduces us to Nico and Olivia. They are an odd pairing of drug cartel leader and professor. After a meet cute that isn’t all that cute, it was interesting watching the way these two interacted as they got to know each other.

This is a very well written story that kept me on my toes. Every time I thought I knew where Ms Boldt was taking us, something in the story would shift and there would be a secret revealed that changed things up. The challenge with multi-layered stories like this is knowing when to stop. Ms Boldt nailed it with this one- she takes Olivia and Nico on a ride while they see if a happy ending is possible, but reigns things in before they got out of control.

Truth in Pieces helps cement Ms Boldt as a go to read for me.

Elizabeth's Review

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Author

Bourbon Fireball is the 4th book in the Barrel House series. After reading the first 3 books, I thought I had an idea of what was coming with Brody’s side of the story, but I was so wrong.

The way this series is set up (2 books from the leading ladies’ points of view followed by 2 books with the hero’s telling their side of things) is very interesting. With Love Notes/Nights (Brett and Melody) we saw some of the same events as the two books moved along. I had expected something similar here with Brody’s point of view with his relationship with Journey, but that’s not really where this book went and I missed that aspect here as the two stories for Brody and Journey didn’t feel as connected as I would have liked.

The journey Brody takes us on is very much his story and the romantic relationship almost seems to be an after thought. There were actually several places in the book where I wondered why he and Journey were even together- and that was a weird place to be after seeing her side on things in Bourbon on the Rocks. The focus here seemed to be more about Brody’s relationship with his daughter from a previous marriage and how pieces of his past made him a more aware Dad. I appreciated the focus on mental health that was present here, both in the advocacy role and in the open discussion of the issues. That is something that has run through this series and I hope seeing fictional characters seek help will encourage anyone struggling to raise their hand and let someone give a needed lifeline.

Overall, I enjoyed seeing things from Brody’s point of view, but there were definitely somethings that I felt were left out of the book. There were one or two references to things that Journey dealt with, that we know where key elements to her relationship with Brody from her book, but we never got to see how Brody really felt once those issues were revealed. Given some of the things Brody shares here, I think the tie in to Journey’s past would have made things between them stronger and made this book feel more like a cohesive part of the series.

I’m a little sad to leave The Barrel House, but I appreciated seeing everything wrapped up and glimpses of what life might be like for the Quinn-Pearson family in the future.

If you are looking for a true feel good story, then Heart Strings is it!

Lottie and Logan are a bit of an odd couple, but I loved them together from the get go. Ms Moreland does an excellent job of crafting a unique meet cute and putting these two characters in positions that swung from awkward to sweet with a little bit of spice thrown in.

Heart Strings is a romance, but there are multiple sub plots going on. I won't go into detail, because you need to read the book! I will say that I enjoyed how Ms Moreland layered in familial relationship conflict and the idea of living your best life into the romantic story. I also appreciated the fact that the conflict of the story was external to the Lottie/Logan story. Seeing how they responded told a lot of their relationship and the potential for a happily ever after.

Add in a dynamic secondary cast and Heart Strings is a must read. I am hoping we may see a little more from the group surrounding Lottie and Logan in the future.
