Synopsis:
Boone Rivers uses his fame and fortune as a professional hockey player to his advantage, but not in the way most people would think. Volunteering as often as his busy schedule will allow, Boone meets one brave young boy who turns his world upside down.
As a first-line right winger for the Pittsburgh Titans, I thrive on the thrill of the game. I live for the smell of the ice, the cheer of the crowd and the way my heart pounds whenever I step into the arena. But once I’m out of my skates, my focus is on giving back to the city of Pittsburgh.
It’s funny how life puts people in your path. I meet Aiden while visiting the children’s hospital and I’m struck by the strength and resilience of this 12-year-old kid fighting for his life. As my visits continue, we bond over video games and hockey until one day Aiden’s older sister walks into his room and I realize there might be a bigger purpose here.
Lilly Hoffman has the weight of the world resting on her slight shoulders. Aiden’s illness isn’t getting better, she’s at risk of losing her job and their father is looking for the answers to his prayers at the bottom of a liquor bottle. I find myself wanting to lessen Lilly’s burden and what starts as a simple act of friendship turns into so much more. As we grow closer, I can’t help but fall for this fiercely protective and independent woman with a tender heart and bruised but not yet broken spirit.
As we face a future of never-ending uncertainty, I vow to be Lilly’s source of strength and comfort. Lilly and Aiden have reaffirmed to me the importance of giving and receiving love unconditionally, even in the darkest of times. And no matter what happens next, no one can take that from us.

I'm breaking one of my own rules here. Normally, a book that is #11 in a series would be a 4-star read at best just because usually by that far into the series, the books are somewhat dependent on the series for back story. This is the case here to a certain extent as previous main characters do appear in supporting roles and having read their stories does add some to the depth (that's the missing 1/2 star), but Ms Bennett delivers such an emotional punch here that Boone's story exceeds expectations.
I don't want to spoil the story here, but I will say that Ms Bennett tackles some hard issues. She has given Boone a huge heart and an extreme amount of grace as he navigates the transition from being a guy doing a good deed to being in a relationship with someone experiencing the hardest of things. His involvement with the Hoffman family felt organic and seemed to blossom from a truly good place. I couldn't help but love him a little for how he embraced everyone, especially for the care he showed Lilly. The maturity Boone shows makes it hard to remember that he is only in his mid-20s.
Lilly is a leading lady to admire! She is young to have to heavy burdens she carries in taking care of her family and their business. I appreciated how Ms Bennett honored those commitments as she created situations where Boone and Lilly could experience growth in their relationship. I feel like I learned something about how isolating the caregiver role can be and was glad to see outlets provided to lift some of Lilly's burdens.
I'm at the point where it's hard to say too much more without giving story details away. Readers who have been following the Titans series will see several familiar faces and there are a couple of updates from previous leads, but nothing that is too spoilerish. I went in expecting a "typical" Sawyer Bennett hockey book and while there is the high standard of craftmanship expected from Ms Bennett, this book also packs an emotional punch along with it's hockey.
