How does one day ripple and impact a family for more than 50 years?

That’s one of the issues Ms Higgins looks at in this powerful story about family, righting past wrongs, and making a path for the future.

Told from multiple points of view, we spend a summer with the London family and in flashbacks we understand more about the journey that has brought them to where they are today.

With engaging characters, Ms Higgins tackles tough subjects and uses the individual experiences to let us see the cause and effect of various decisions. At first it is easy to say “I wouldn’t do that,” but the more we get to know the people behind the choices, some of them make more sense and it creates a feeling of empathy with the people involved.

Ms Higgins is a go to author for me and Life and Other Inconveniences just cemented that fact for me.

Good Guy (Rookie Rebels, #1)Good Guy by Kate Meader

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recomend to a Friend

I’ve been tired lately. So tired (thank you work and Bronchitis) that I didn’t even want to read. Good Guy by Kate Meader was the perfect antidote to the reading funk.

Set in Meader’s Chicago Rebels world, Good Guy features a slightly inappropriate relationship between a reporter and her subject plus a timely discussion regarding women in sports.

Levi and Jordan (our main characters) are both interesting and dynamic. I enjoyed getting to know them, especially the multi layered and complex Levi. Their reconnection turned frenemies working relationship turned more was entertaining to watch. Ms Meader did a wonderful job of portraying the real fears and concerns that each was dealing with without having either character come across as whining or “poor me.”

Add in a creative spin to the conflict and an awesome secondary cast and Good Guy is a winner of a hockey read with a heart. I loved that Levi had a soft spot for the homeless and used his spotlight for change. Loyal Meader fans will enjoy several of the cameo appearances by previous main characters- not just from the three Rebel books, but certain fire fighters too.

I am definitely looking forward to what comes next for the Rookie Rebels.
