My rating: 5 of 5 stars - One of the Best

I think I may have found my first 5 star read of 2018. One of the things I look for, one of the things that make a book go that extra mile to be a 5 star read, is the idea of “Does this book make me think?” or “Can I see myself as this character?” After Care does both for me.

While Edie (the star of After Care) and I aren’t exactly in the same place in our lives, there are enough similarities that I can definitely relate to where she is emotionally during most of the book. We meet Edie as she is on vacation with her children in Hawaii. We see her dealing with the fallout of being cancer free, a divorcee, and her young adult children beginning to leave home.

After Care was not an “escape” read for me. It was a put the kindle down and think about what just happened read. Watching Edie and her children form friendships with an unlikely group of people and seeing the developing romantic relationships really did make me stop and wonder if I could be as brave had I been in the same situation.

The fact that Edie’s emotions seem to leap off the page speaks to Ms. Dunbar’s ability to pull the reader in – almost like being a fly on the wall of Edie’s mind. Edie and Tommy (her love interest) are both great characters that I easily became invested in. The secondary cast is strong and has me curious – I wonder if they have stories of their own somewhere.

Ms. Dunbar is a new author for me. Several of her books on sitting on my To be Read list and they will be working their way up to the top soon!
