Confession time - the stepbrother stories are probably some of my least favorite. The thing that attracted me to this one? The fact that our heroine doesn't want to like him.
What I discovered once I got into S.O.B is that even though our main characters are step siblings, that's not the biggest part of the story. The core of our story is watching two young people figure out how to over come obstacles to not only be together, but to be who they really want to be.
Vista and Levi met when she was 18 and their parents were getting married. One night together had them thinking long term until Levi's Dad ordered him to end it. Fast forward four years to Levi and Vista being forced together when his father hires her to be his physical therapist. It doesn't take long for the old spark to ignite and for Vista to discover that Levi isn't the man she thought until dear old Dad ruins things once again.
In reading S.O.B, I really enjoyed Vista. For a fairly young woman, she was smart and stood up for herself. The character I really enjoyed though was Levi. He initially comes across as the world's biggest jerk, but the more we get to know him, the more some of his behavior makes sense. Levi didn't always make the best decisions when it came to his relationship with Vista, but the way he addressed his mistakes made me root for him all the more.
In the end, I'm still on the fence about the stepbrother trope. But, I really enjoyed watching Levi grow and mature in S.O.B and am glad that this was my first J.C. Valentine book. I will definitely be looking to read some of her other work.
