Synopsis
Elise Riley is the average girl that has never been treated like she was worthy, always second best even by her own mother. She becomes a victim of a crime committed by one of her closest friends and is shipped off to Humble, Texas to live with her aunt and uncle on the family farm. She swears that she will never trust another guy that is until she meets Ford. Ford Kelly is the star running back at Humble High, always treated like he was number one. Ford lives a life of eat, sleep, and football. He hates it and is starting to struggle from the effects of playing hard his entire life. The one girl Ford likes seems to reject him at every turn. But when he starts to break down her walls, there are more things standing in their way than he suspected. Is love worth the risk? Even if it means breaking a promise you made to your best friend? And if it is worth the risk, will you let it happen? Can you get past all the bad things that have happened in your life?

Elizabeth's Review

3 Stars - Average Read

Review Copy Provided by Author

Brooklyn Taylor is a newer author for me and I enjoyed the other book of hers that I read, so I had high hopes for Finding Me.

Finding Me is a good book that covers very emotional and difficult ground, but I struggled with connecting to the story. I don't know if it's that this effort is geared more to a YA audience than my previous exposure to Ms. Taylor or something else, but there were parts of the story that I really questioned.

Elise had a horrible home life until the final straw at 16 when her mother shipped her off to live with her aunt and uncle. (My first issue - if the mother/daughter relationship was so bad, why did it take 16 years for her mother to send her to live elsewhere? And if the aunt/uncle had such issues with the way she was cared for why did they not step in? Why did the friends parents not do more?)

Ford is the only child of a former high school football hero and the star running back of his high school team, but he hates it. (My second issue - I grew up in small town TX, so grew up exposed to the "football" culture. Some of the characterizations rang true for me, but seemed to be a compilation of the worst of the worst.)

Once Ford and Elise meet, things got better for me. She seems to be remarkably well adjusted given her issues and past, like someone I would encourage my own child to spend time with. Ford goes out of his way to be gentle and kind, even though this seems to be his nature anyway. The Elise/Ford relationship is what save this book for me. If I could whisper in Ms. Taylor's ear, I would suggest expanding things a little bit so that we see more of Ford and Elise together as their relationship evolves. There were just a few questions that lingered for me. How did he react when she told him "everything?", etc.

About the Author
I currently reside outside of Austin, Texas. I'm a mother of 2 amazing kiddos and married to my gorgeous soulmate for almost 20 years. I have a full time job in the medical field but would rather be spending my time writing! I love to spend my free time reading, being outside and playing with my family and 4 fur babies. I started to write at the instinct of "hey maybe I can do that!" and haven't stopped since. I have enjoyed every step of the journey. I am blessed to have very supportive friends and family that make my life worth living!
