Review Round Up ~ November 29

Coming Soon/New Releases:

The Mistletoe Trap (Heart in the Game, #2)The Mistletoe Trap by Cindi Madsen

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Copy Provided by Publisher by Net Galley

Do you need a feel good read to get you ready for the holidays? Then Mistletoe Trap is the fun friends to more you are looking for.

Julie and Gavin have literally been friends forever. It was so much fun watching these 20 somethings deal with the shenanigans of family pushing them together while they tried to decide if they wanted to keep denying that they had feeing for each other.

Ms Madsen did a fantastic job with the grand gesture needed to make things right again - this book has made me super curious about the first book in the series and what may be coming next.

In Rewrite and Simmer, a key secondary character was Victoria. She is the daughter of Josh (Rewrite) and Sara (Simmer), in Pining we get to see her all grown up! She is paired with Anthony, a young man who made a youthful mistake and paid the price.

This is a quick read and it was fun to see grown up Victoria as well as catching up with the previous characters. Both Josh and Sara (along with their other halves) were able to impart key wisdom to our young lovers as they navigated the path to happily ever after.

Ms Rose always does an excellent job of bringing the real world into her stories and she does that here as well, especially as she compares Anthony’s situation to Josh’s experience. While this is technically stand alone, knowing the back story of the other couples definitely adds to the enjoyment here.

Well written, as expected, Pining is another winner from a favorite author.

Secret Nights with a Cowboy (Kittredge Ranch, #1)Secret Nights with a Cowboy by Caitlin Crews

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

In Secret Nights, Ms Crews returns us to Cold River, but this time the focus is on the Kittridge brothers introduced previously as secondary characters. We start with middle brother, Riley, and his estranged wife, Rae.

This was a book that I enjoyed - as we got to see Riley and Rae address issues and come to terms with a long term relationship/non relationship. But, it’s a book I was also frustrated by.

I liked the premise- the idea that one partner deciding to finally end the cycle they were in sparked change and set key events in motion. But, I struggled it’s how much back and forth there was to get to resolution.

I had a hard time connecting to Rae and Riley in parts of the book and was surprised at how easily they got past the big “fight” scene when so much was revealed. In most of the book, the town of Cold River and various siblings were very involved in the Riley/Rae drama. I found it a bit of a let down that the resolution didn’t address more of those conflicts, it seemed like a big miss to assume that everyone would just be “okay” with how things played out. I would have liked to have seen less of the back and forth early on and more of how did the resolution work.

All of that said, I am very curious to see more of Cold River and if Riley’s brothers can solve their own romantic dilemmas.

Mistletoe in Paradise (Wildstone, #5.5)Mistletoe in Paradise by Jill Shalvis

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Copy Provided by Author

A quick holiday novella about a second chance and what’s important.

I enjoyed seeing Hannah and James reconnect with a little interference from step dad Harry. Ms Shalvis does an excellent job of making these characters relatable in a very short time frame.

This story also touches on key points, like what’s really important in life and how sometimes we have to bend to make relationships work.

While this is set away from Wildstone, that is where Hannah is from. I am hoping these two will pop up as secondary characters later!

Runaway Road (Runaway, #1)Runaway Road by Devney Perry

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Copy Purchased

Runaway Road is the first book in a new series about 6 teenagers who formed their own family when they needed it and where they are now. We start with Londyn and meet her as she is leaving Boston after a divorce.

Ms Perry pulls us into London’s story and does an excellent job of weaving world building into what happens when fate, in the form of a flat tire, interrupts a cross country road trip.

That flat tire led to Brooks and the town of Summers, WV. It was easy to see why Londyn would get attached to both! I loved how the story between these two was crafted as a friends to lovers tale - and how the time with Brooks allowed Londyn to take a different look at her life so far.

The secondary cast in Runaway Road is fairly small, which allows us to focus on the primary couple in the story. We learn a little bit about the 5 other people Lodyn was with as a teenager, but not much. We do see some of Gemma, the heroine of Wild Highway (book 2), but it’s done in a way that feels organic to this story. I am looking forward to what happens next in the series.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars - Average Read

This is my first read by Leslie McAdam and I picked it up as a free read.
I have very mixed feelings about the book. I liked Jessica and wanted to root for her, but it was difficult for me to get emotionally invested in the story.

The Ground Beneath Our Feet reads more like a guide to self help in terms of body acceptance, self image issues, and addiction versus a relationship story. That made it difficult to embrace the evolution of the relationship from roomates to more between Jessica and Mikey.

There is an interesting secondary cast that seems to be part of a larger series. I am curious about the other books, but I don't know if I will be rushing out to buy them.

My life’s a mess. My possible football career is hanging on by a thread. I'm driving the roads of Germany in honor of Pops with the one girl I can never have. And I’m sharing a bed with her, the girl I've measured everyone else up to, while desperately trying to not to touch her.   Blurb: How hard can it be? That was the question rolling around Larissa Mason’s mind just before she asked Hollis Hudson to be her fake boyfriend. It was only supposed to be for five minutes, after all. Granted, that was also before she felt his hand on the small of her back as he charmed the heck out of her family. She hadn’t heard his laugh yet either. And it was definitely before she saw the football god shirtless. Otherwise, she would’ve had an idea of just how hard some things could be. It turns out that pretending to be in love with a crazily handsome, somewhat enigmatic, and absolutely unforgettable tight end (that has an amazing tight end) is easy. Reminding herself that just because opposites attract doesn’t mean they’re forever is much harder. What they have isn’t love—it’s a relationship pact. Right?

About Adriana: USA Today and Washington Post bestselling author Adriana Locke lives and breathes books. After years of slightly obsessive relationships with the flawed bad boys created by other authors, Adriana has created her own. She resides in the Midwest with her husband, sons, and two dogs. She spends a large amount of time playing with her kids, drinking coffee, and cooking. You can find her outside if the weather's nice and there's always a piece of candy in her pocket.

A smart and sexy romance about a grumpy single dad on a mission of revenge, and the girl he can’t leave behind by USA Today bestselling author Tia Louise.

I blame the alcohol.
I lost my restaurant business, was forced to sell my dad’s cherished 1967 Chevy Impala, and I got a little drunk.
Now I’m waking up with the hottest, angriest guy I’ve ever seen, speeding down the highway like a bat out of hell.
Ice-blue eyes hit mine with stomach-clenching force… and he swerves onto the shoulder, ready to kick me out.
Needless to say, our romance doesn’t start out sweet.

Two years ago, I hugged my little boy goodbye and told him I’d be right back.
Next thing I knew, I was arrested and sent to prison for a crime I didn’t commit.
Until they let me out early…

Now I’m headed home to confront the man who put me away.
A lie put me behind bars, and I’m ready to find the truth.
I don’t have time for a sexy girl with pale blonde hair and bright blue eyes stowed away on the backseat of my new car.
My mission is to get my son back and clear my name.
Love is not on the agenda.
It never is, though, is it?

(THIS MUCH IS TRUE is a single-dad, opposites attract, STAND-ALONE romance. No cheating. No cliffhangers.)

Review Round Up ~ November 14

Coming Soon/New Releases:

Shame the Devil (Portland Devils #3)Shame the Devil by Rosalind James

4.5 stars - One of the Best

Review Copy Provided by Author

If you are looking for a light, easy read then I am going to suggest that Shame the Devil might be a book you want to wait on reading. If you are looking for a book that shows two people working hard to grow while they face challenges, then settle in to this read written in Ms Jame’s signature style.

Our characters are single mom, Jennifer, and football player, Harlan. We see her daughter, Dyma, and his teammate, Owen, and sister, Annabelle, in key secondary roles.

Fate seems to play a key role in bringing Jennifer and Harlan together the first time as they meet while vacationing in Yellowstone. It was fun to see her behave in a way that was obviously outside of her normal while also being true to herself. The events that follow have some hard moments for both Jennifer and Harlan. Ms James let’s us see them both struggle and lean on each other at various times as they tackle the hard things.

There are some fun moments here too. As well as messages that resonate on what is really important. Fans of Ms James work will see cameos from previous Portland Devil/Wildhorse books.

While Shame the Devil wasn’t an easy book, it was a touching book. I walked away happy for Jennifer and Harlan, but curious about what life will have in store for Dyma (and Owen) and Annabelle.

Snowed in with the Firefighter (Shadow Creek, Montana, #7)Snowed in with the Firefighter by Victoria James

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

If you are looking for a sweet, feel good story full of redemption then this is it.
Melody and Finn are both hiding out at the cabin owned by their siblings. Unbeknownst to them, there is some match making going on behind the goodwill/hope you get your act together sharing.

I found myself liking both characters and rooting for them to sort themselves out so they could give a relationship a fair shot. It was fun to watch them go from awkward semi friends to a full fledge budding romance.

Both Melody and Finn have baggage to unpack and I appreciated the emotional growth both characters experienced. Reading this made me very curious about reading the first 2 books in the series.

Lies & Lullabies (Hush Note, #1)Lies & Lullabies by Sarina Bowen

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review copy Purchased

I’ve gone out of order with the series by reading the books about Quinn and Nix before circling back to meet Jonas.

I enjoyed getting to see how Jonas and Kira connected and then later reconnected. Ms Bowen did an excellent job of weaving the past into the early parts of the present story so that we could see the basis of the romantic relationship that would be explored.

I wish I’d read the series in order - I think knowing how things would turn out for The members of Hush Note colored my experience of this particular story. Some pieces of the reconnection between Kira and Jonas almost seemed too easy - I wished they’d had to work at it just a little bit more.

Loved You Once (The Baker’s Creek Billionaire Brothers, #1)Loved You Once by Claudia Y. Burgoa

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Purchased

I started this series with the second book, so when Loved You Once popped on sale, I grabbed it to see how things got started.

This is a book that is doing double duty. Not only is it telling us the story of how Hayse and Blair reconnect after 12 years apart, it also has to build the world of Baker’s Creek and the Aldridge brothers.

I liked Hayse and Blair and enjoyed watching them resolve old issues to see if they could have a second chance amid the family drama. Unfortunately, with such a large cast to introduce, there were times when I felt like Hayse and Blair got lost a little bit. I would have appreciated more focus on how their second chance evolved, especially since it seems they had a lot of baggage to unpack.

If I could change anything about this service, I would have suggested a prequel novella/book that introduced the family without having one of the brothers as a main character. After reading the first two stories, I am definitely curious to see the stories of the other brothers.

A Co Workers Crush ~ Piper Rayne ~ Cover Reveal

Release Date: January 5

Three tattoo guns.

Five motorcycle tires.

Countless T-shirts.

That’s what I lost before I realized nothing good comes from dating my co-workers.

Usually, I don’t have much self-control. So, the fact that Frankie Grant is a hot, talented tattoo artist means it’s a damn miracle she hasn’t already been in my bed. But nothing can happen between us because Frankie comes with Jolie, her young daughter, and a crap load of baggage from her ex. And those are two things I never entertain.

Anyone who knows me—the screwed up foster kid from the wrong side of the tracks—knows I’m not the guy you take home to meet your parents, let alone your kid. But I also know what it’s like not to have parents, so things get complicated when Jolie asks me to be her daddy.

I might as well just slash my own tires now.
