Netgalley New Releases

Today we have reviews for THREE new releases! Enjoy!

The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo (Victorian Rebels, #6)The Duke with the Dragon Tattoo by Kerrigan Byrne

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Netgalley

3.5 stars for an entertaining historical read.
Byrne is a new author for me and this was a good introduction to her work. I found myself really liking Lorelei and Ash/Rook. I enjoyed their initial time together when they were young and hoped with them that the fragile bond could grow until they were mature enough to explore it.
I also enjoyed their more adult encounters and how her affections were able to peel back the layers of time and hardship to find the man underneath.
This was a well written story that balances intrigue with passion in a clever setting. This is part of a series, but I did not feel lost for having not read the other books first. My interest in the author and series has been sparked and I am looking forward to reading the other books.

Cowboy, Cross My HeartCowboy, Cross My Heart by Donna Grant

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Netgalley

I enjoyed this book, but also struggled with it at times.
From a character standpoint, I truly liked the cast. Naomi and Brice were both entertaining and the secondary cast was excellent.
For the story - I appreciated the instant attraction between Naomi and Brice and how potential intrigue brought them together. Where I struggled; the scope on the intrigue story line just seemed too vast to believable.
Well written, this follows the Harper/East families we’ve been introduced to previously. It look me to about the halfway point to realize I had read the first book, so this is definitely a stand alone effort. Hopefully we will see Caleb’s story soon.

Maybe for You (Whiskey and Weddings, #3)Maybe for You by Nicole McLaughlin

My rating: 3 of 5 stars - Average Read

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Netgalley

This was a book I wanted to read after really enjoying the first 2 Whiskey and Wedding books and while this one was good, it didn’t have the oomph of the previous stories for me.
Alex and Jake are characters that we have met previously, but the author does a good job of capturing their back story here so the reader doesn’t feel lost.
I loved that this was a friends to lovers story and the slow build up, but my struggle was with how Alex was portrayed after she and Jake became involved.
I felt like she went from a woman regaining her footing after tragedy to a whiny little girl. I understand that the emotional upheaval is part of her character journey, but it really sent mixed messages for me and made it hard to embrace her as fully as I would have liked.
There is also a moment at the end of the book that I feel exploited Alex’s phobias to add tension that wasn’t really needed.
This was a decent conclusion to the series. It is a stand-alone work, but the backstory and involved secondary cast make reading the books in order worth the effort.

Elizabeth's Review

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Copy Provided by Author

I feel like the 4 star rating here is a little like saying “I’m reserving judgement” because this book is only 1/2 of the story. Yes, this is a duet and if you are reading this review before Oct 1, 2018 you are going to have to wait with the rest of us.

That said - I really liked the story that is here.

We have London - mid 20s recently divorced from her high school sweetheart over some pretty legit issues. She also has some pretty serious other stuff going on in regards to her Mom’s health.
With London comes 2 hunky guys.... her Mom’s doctor and London’s childhood bestie.... and Angst!
That’s right, this well written and entertaining book is full of ANGST! Our girl London is a bit of a mess and more than once I wanted to reach into the book and shake her. I’m not going to say why because this is a spoiler free zone.

Our 2 guys are both equally interesting, but I will say that I definitely had a preference for who London should be with early on.

This is a romantic book, but it’s also very much London’s story. We get a deep dive into what she’s thinking and feeling and there are times when I had to remind myself she was only 26 and was fairly naive in the way of romance and relationships despite having been married.
Ms Andrew’s takes us on an intriguing journey and I am very much looking forward to the conclusion of the duet.

Review Catch Up

ARC READS

Catching Irish (The Summerhaven Trio #4)Catching Irish by Katy Regnery

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a friend

Review Copy was Provided by Author

This is a fun novella to wrap up the Summerhaven series.
Finian and Tate are characters that we have met in the primary trilogy. Given that this is a novella, we don't get to know them very well, but we definitely have some fun with them!
I think one of the things I enjoyed most about Catching Irish is that even though the story is short, Ms Regnery has the emotional connection between Fin and Tate radiating off the page. I liked both characters and should this series ever be revisited, I would love to see more of them.

Amazon

Good Time Cowboy (Gold Valley, #3)Good Time Cowboy by Maisey Yates

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

Ms Yates brings us back to Gold Valley to spend time with the Dodge family - this time with oldest brother, Wyatt.
I liked Wyatt and Lindy and enjoyed watching them poke and prod at each other before finally giving in to their mutual attraction. They are both interesting characters with more in common than they initially appear to have. Unfortunately, as much as I liked both characters, I had a little bit of a hard time connecting to them.
Good Time Cowboy was an entertaining read, but the emotional epiphanies seemed a little forced, especially Lindy's. Both Lindy and Wyatt had road blocks to deal with, it just seemed that they danced a little too much before things magically happened.
This is not my first Gold Valley book, but I think I missed the second book in the series. This is what I would consider a heavily interconnected standalone with numerous references to things that have happened previously and setting up future books. It's not necessary to have read the previous books to read Good Time Cowboy, but by having missed a book in the series, I had a nagging sense of "what am I missing here" as I witnessed interactions with secondary characters. I am curious both to go back and see what I have missed as well as what may be coming next.

Drowning to Breathe (Bleeding Stars, #2)Drowning to Breathe by A.L. Jackson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would recommend Duet to a friend

Copy was received as a gift

This is the conclusion to a Stone in the Sea - given that, don’t try to read this book without reading the first book!
We pick up Shea and Baz’s story right were we left off and Ms Jackson takes us on a wild ride to a happy ending. I enjoyed getting to see how things worked out for Shea and Baz and really appreciated that a lot of the drama in this installment is external to their relationship.
The secondary cast takes a bit of a bigger role here and in some ways that made this a harder book for me to review - because I’ve read this series out of order. Some of the secondary characters behave a bit differently here than I expect mainly because I originally met them when they were more developed.
A Stone in the Sea and Drowning to Breathe are a duet worth reading!

Stuck-Up SuitStuck-Up Suit by Vi Keeland

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Keeland and Ward have done it again by creating a truly fun story.
Graham and Soraya are a great example of opposites attract and fate stepping in to bring people together. These are entertaining characters that pull you in and make it impossible to put their story down.
Surprises and baggage impact their story, but the way they dealt with those issues just added to my affection for both of them. Great secondary characters and a fun cameo round out an entertaining read that just makes me want to read more by this duet.

The Professor's Heart (Her Perfect Man Contemporary Romance)The Professor's Heart by T.R. Bertrand

My rating: 3 of 5 stars - Average Read

Co-written books face a unique challenge in making sure that the “voice” of the book is cohesive. This book missed that mark just a little bit. There were a couple of places where it was obvious that the author switched as minor details changed from one chapter to another (she was wearing a robe at the end of one chapter, but he removed her pants in the beginning of the next.)
This is an entertaining read, but really just barely skims the surface of every idea presented. We know the facts, but don’t really get to know the whys behind it. I was definitely left with lots of questions about Derek. There were also numerous tidbits about Naomi that didn’t make sense.
I enjoyed the book, but if you are looking for an angsty, slightly taboo read, this isn’t it.

faux pas ~ Natasha Madison ~ Cover Reveal

        Meghan
Five days in Paris sounded like a great idea for three friends. Especially when amazing wine was in play. It didn't matter that our rented “apartment” only had one bed, and barely enough space to breathe, we were in Paris and our motto was c'est la vie. Nothing would faze us, not even the rude waiter at the first restaurant we went to, or the insanely hot manger who was insulted when a bottle of wine was returned. Nothing could bring me down or knock me off my path to the best vacation of my life.
 Alex
I had six days in Paris and then I'd go back to my wine vineyard. It was smooth sailing, until three "americans" came into the restaurant and returned my newest full bodied, savory creation. I ignored her until she stormed out of the restaurant looking for a taxi at one in the morning. I couldn't leave her wandering around the streets of Paris, could I? I’d give her a ride, make sure she was safe, and my duty would be done. Except, was it? Something about her pulled me. This could be a vacation fling. After all, there is no real reason for her to know my interesting secret. I'm France’s most eligible bachelor. This faux pair is almost a faux pas...     When her nose isn't buried in a book, or her fingers flying across a keyboard writing, she's in the kitchen creating gourmet meals. You can find her, in four inch heels no less, in the car chauffeuring kids, or possibly with her husband scheduling his business trips. It's a good thing her characters do what she says, because even her Labrador doesn't listen to her... Excerpt:
“Ian,” my bartender, Toby, calls with his hand out. “What’s up?” “You have a call.” He pushes the phone toward me. No one calls the club for me other than vendors, and it’s eleven-thirty at night, so whoever it is can wait. “I have to deal with something now, send them to my voicemail.” He shakes his head. “She’s called three times.” The annoyance in his voice is clear, even over the music. She? The only woman that would resort to calling the club is my ex-wife. God only knows what bullshit she wants now. For all I know she broke a nail, it’s my fault, and she thinks I should pay for her new manicure, or a hand replacement. She’s like the gift you’ve tried to return but can’t find the receipt for, so you’re stuck with it. I hate unwanted presents, and I hate Jolene. “Send the devil to my voicemail,” I say and walk away. I head out to the sidewalk. Drea wasn’t kidding, the line is nuts. “Hello, Officer,” I say to the pudgy cop standing next to the bouncer. “Mr. Chase, we’re getting complaints,” he says, looking down the sidewalk at the line. “I can’t help that we’re popular.” I shrug. “I’m at capacity, and can’t kick out the paying customers to take care of the line.” “You’re obstructing the entrances of other businesses because of the way your overflow lines are set up.” How the hell would they like me to handle it? We’re not inside the casino, there’s no way to control the line. I’m not about to turn away people when we hit the number ten. This is a business, and part of the free marketing I get is thanks to the line. “All right, I’ll figure something out.” I grip the back of my neck. I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket. If this is Jolene, I swear to God, I might lose my fucking mind. The name flashes across the screen, London Parish. For fuck’s sake. Like I need to deal with my sister’s uptight, irritating best friend right now. London would be incredibly hot if she wasn’t such a raging bitch. I look at my call log and see this is the third time she’s called. I walk down the strip a little, and after a few deep breaths, I call her back. “Ian, you need to come to my house.” I smirk. “Well, this is a first. Did you have the stick removed from your ass?” “Don’t. Not today, please. Just come here.” I hear her sniff and my protectiveness kicks in. Someone made her cry. We don’t get along at all—partly because we’re polar opposites and partly because of our history—but no one gets to make her cry. “Are you hurt?” I ask. “Not in the way you think.” Her voice hitches. I’ve known London for twenty-five years. I can count on one hand how many times I’ve seen or heard her cry—I was the reason one of those times. “What’s wrong? Is it an emergency? Because I’m at work and the club—” “Now, Ian. You need to come here now.” She also doesn’t play games. Fuck. I look at my watch and blow a deep breath through my nose. It’ll take me at least thirty minutes to get there. This is seriously a shitty night. “I’ll be there as soon as I can.” “Just . . . hurry,” London says and hangs up. Dread pulls at my stomach, telling me there’s something going on. I don’t know what, but I know I need to get there. “Get rid of the line, no more get in,” I tell the bouncer, and then head inside. Drea is at the bar, and my anxiety is starting to grow. London needs me there, why? What happened? Did someone break into her house? Mine? Maybe it has to do with an ex, if she even has one, or it could be nothing like that. Regardless, her voice was shaky and I can’t waste time wondering. “I have to go,” I tell Drea. Her eyes widen. “Go? Go where? It’s a packed house.” “I’m aware of that, but something came up. I need you to handle things tonight.” I turn to Toby. “Stay until Drea is done closing and I want you to escort her to her car at the end of the night.” He nods. I never let her walk out of here alone. Even if I have someone coming home with me, Drea’s not going to be unescorted. Too many men get the wrong impression because she’s nice to them. Over my dead body will she be hurt as a result of working at my club. After I get in the car, my mind is racing. I drive faster than I should, telling myself that London is just being dramatic. And then I remember . . . she has my nephew and nieces at her house. My foot pushes down on the pedal of my Jaguar, making the engine howl with each mile. I turn into the development where we both live, pass my house, and head to hers. I still hate that our backyards touch. Every damn day I see her sitting out on her deck, reading her books, looking down at me with her disapproving attitude. When I get there, the flashing lights of a police car brighten the road. I don’t think. I don’t know if I even put the car in park before I’m out of the vehicle. “London!” I yell as I rush through the door. “Christopher? Morgan? Ruby?” I call out for the kids, praying it’s not one of them. When I get to the living room, I release a heavy sigh—they’re all there, not hurt. Then I see the tears streaming down Morgan’s face. London gets to her feet. Her eyes are red, puffy, and black mascara runs down her cheeks. “Ian.” She chokes on my name. “What’s wrong? What happened?” The girls start to cry again, and my nephew pulls them into his arms. London moves toward me, placing her hand on my chest. “They’re gone.” “Who?” I ask, confused. “Sabrina and David,” she whispers. Yeah, they went on a trip. Why the hell are they crying? “This is what you called me for? They’ll be home in a few days. Why are you crying too?” I ask. Her green eyes meet mine and her lips part. “No.” She shakes her head. “They won’t.” I look over at the kids again, and then to the muted television. My feet move closer, because I have to be sure the words flashing across the screen say what I think they say. “Flight 1184 crashes off the coast of Hawaii. Three hundred missing and presumed dead.” My sister was going to Hawaii. My sister is gone. I sink to my knees in front of the kids, unsure what to say. They just lost their parents, and my heart is breaking. My sister was my best friend. She was the one who pushed me to open Veil and do what I wanted. I’ve always had her support, and now she’s gone. Christopher lifts his head, his brown eyes filled with unshed tears. “They’ll find them,” he says with conviction. “Okay,” I reply. We both know it’s a lie, but it’s one he has to tell himself. I remember being fifteen; there was no telling me I was wrong. “Dad wouldn’t . . .” he starts, and then stops as his lip quivers. My own tears start to fall, as Morgan grabs my hand. “What do we do now?” I have no fucking clue. How do I tell these kids how to survive? I’m the last person in the world equipped to give this advice. I look to London. Her hand touches my shoulder and she wipes the tears that fall silently down her cheeks. “We hold each other close,” she says.

This was a great debut effort for the new collaboration of Ms Harlow and Ms Michaels.
From the set up - a nearly 20 year old heartbreak and lost love forced to work together for the needs of someone else- to the evolution- to the end, this was an enjoyable read.

I liked Ian and London and appreciated the efforts they expended to work together for the benefit of loved ones and how they started to mend broken fences between each other.
The thing that kept this from being a higher rated read for me was the fact that their arguments with each other were always the same, they never seemed to really resolve anything or learn from their mistakes. The repetition in the arguments made me start to skim a little and I hate that because you never know when you might miss something.

Given that this is basically a debut novel, it is very well written - I wouldn’t expect less from two veteran authors- and a book that was hard to put down once I started. The one piece I wish that had been resolved for us, was what happened with London’s job. It was such a key piece to her character that I would have liked to know the conclusion to that story line.

Blood Cure is the conclusion to the trilogy and is the book that makes the whole series work. I struggled a little bit with books 1&2, but this book made it all worth it. This picks up right where Blood Match leaves off, so this is definitely not a stand alone. Reyna has a maturity level in this book that makes it much easier to like her as a character and to root for her success.

This story is packed with action and intrigue from the get go, there are twists and turn that keep you on your toes and make the book hard to put down. As much as this has action and intrigue, there is also a strong romantic story that comes from somewhere unexpected.

Well written and engaging, this is definitely a book/series to read if you like paranormal and battles between good and evil.

A startling new vision of paranormal romance: When a human ventures into the world of vampires—a decadent milieu of blood-bonds and betrayal—she discovers that not all is what it seems. For Reyna Carpenter, giving up her body isn’t a choice. It’s survival. In a civilization laid waste by poverty and desperation, Reyna accepts a high-paying position with the wealthy and hungry vampire elite. Her new job is as the live-in blood escort for the intimidating, demanding, and devilishly handsome Beckham Anderson. He’s everything she expected from a vampire, except for one thing—he won’t feed off her. Reyna soon discovers that behind Beckham’s brooding, wicked façade lies a unique and complex man. And that, in a dark and divided world, she is more valuable than she ever would have believed. For with each passing night, Reyna can’t shake the sensation that it’s Beckham who’s afraid of her. Note: Reyna and Beckham’s story continues in Blood Match. ADD TO GOODREADS

She never expected to lose her heart to her dark, enigmatic boss, Beckham Anderson. After being taken by a depraved captor who plans to rule the world, Reyna will do anything to return to Beckham. She just has to find the will to survive this game. From the pawn, rises a queen. Note: Reyna and Beckham’s story begins in Blood Type and continues in Blood Cure.

OUTRAGEOUS by Marie Force

The 7th erotic romance title in the Quantum Series.

AVAILABLE NOW!

Book Blurb:

She drives him crazy… In more ways than one. Every time Leah Holt encounters Quantum Production’s chief counsel, Emmett Burke, the only thing she can think of is how much she wants to lick him. Everywhere. She’s never had that kind of reaction to a man, and the fact that he’s a much-older colleague makes her out-of-control attraction to him far more complicated than it should be. Every day, she brings a new legal question to Emmett, hoping to catch his attention and make him see her as a grown woman who wants him desperately. She walks a fine line in trying to remain professional as the assistant to superstar Marlowe Sloane while lusting after Marlowe’s sexy attorney. To Emmett, Leah is a fly buzzing around his head who can’t be swatted away. She’s always there, looking at him, asking him legal questions that have nothing to do with his specialty in entertainment law and generally driving him mad with her overt sexiness and sassy mouth. He wants to toss her over his desk and run the sass right out of her, which is hardly the way a professional who loves his job should behave in the office—especially with a young, fresh, sexy colleague. As the author of the company’s policy on inter-office dating, he’s painfully aware of all the reasons he should stay far, far away from her and the tantalizing temptation she represents. Then Leah gets her chance to step up for Emmett, to help him through an unfortunate “accident” and to show him she’s much more than just a smart mouth and a sexy body. When she realizes she has genuine feelings for him—and that those feelings are returned—she wonders if he will take a chance on her or continue to hold her at arm’s length. Slowly but surely, she chips away at his resistance, and he begins to crave more of her. But Emmett knows if he’s going to let her in, he has to let her all the way in. What will she think when he introduces her to his BDSM lifestyle? Will she still want him the way she does now or will she run away in horror? And what will he do if she runs away? When Leah confronts a dangerous threat from her past, Emmett is forced to acknowledge that his “annoying little fly” has worked her way firmly into his heart—and his bed. Also, join the entire Quantum team at the company’s vineyard in Napa for Hayden and Addie’s wedding! Contains the full TAME edition in the back for those who want all the romance with a less scorching heat level!

This was a fun read about two secondary characters in the Quantum universe.
Leah and Emmett end up being a much different couple than I expected from the way the book started and I enjoyed the lighter take this story provided. Both characters still come with some baggage - it’s kind of a given with this group- but it doesn’t seem to be the soul ripping variety we’ve seen with other couples. There was a lot of humor in this book and it made the emotional evolution of both characters as pleasure to watch.
Outrageous can be read as a stand alone, but I think it would lose a lot of the punch without the backstory the previous books provide; especially as there are multiple references to events featured in past books. As much as this is Leah and Emmett’s story, it’s a catch up with other characters - and that’s probably my one complaint - there are a couple of places where Ms Force switches to the POV of supporting characters. The deviation from Leah/Emmett telling the story was a bit jarring and did pull me from the story a bit.
This is a series that has been very entertaining- I am hoping to see a book for Marlowe soon!
