Sweet ~ Adriana Locke ~ New Release & Review

Title: Sweet
Author: Adriana Locke
Cover Designer: Kari March
Release Date: February 28, 2022

TROPES: single dad, workplace romance, grumpy hero, age gap, forced proximity

Synopsis:

USA Today Bestselling author Adriana Locke delivers a “fresh and fun!” romance between a grumpy single dad and his beautiful, spunky employee—the one he can’t have.

Chemistry is not love.

That’s what my boss, the grumpy single dad with brilliant green eyes, says anyway.

I have my V-card. He’s ten years older than me. I work for him.

Nate Hughes has a million reasons why a relationship between us would never work. Honestly? It’s all a farce.

He can’t deny our connection. His soft smiles, brief touches, and protective behaviors come too easily. And when I need a place to stay? He can’t stop himself from offering me a room—though I’d prefer his bed. After all, there are sparks—delicious, sizzling sparks—when we’re together.

Our forced proximity brings things to a head. Our shared experiences and traumas draw us closer. Our undeniable attraction has us toeing the line between friends and lovers—whether Nate likes it or not.

He’s right—chemistry is not love. But that doesn’t mean that I won’t fall in love with him … even if he can’t love me back.

Excerpt:

“I had nowhere to go, Nate,” she says, sticking her bottom lip out. “But I knew my friend Nate would be more than happy to help me out of my bind. You weren’t here so I came on in. I waved to Shaye as I walked through the front door so it’s not like I was being sneaky.”

Like that makes it okay.

“What would you have done if someone else would’ve walked in here and saw you naked?” I ask, quirking a brow.

She laughs. “Nate, no one else has the balls to walk into your office but you.”

“And you, apparently.”

“Well, and me.” She grins and picks up the curling iron. “I’m glad you’re here. I kind of need a favor.”

I recline against the couch and prepare myself.

“Now’s a little late to be asking for favors, don’t ya think?” I ask.

In Sweet, Ms Locke merges several of worlds to give us a new couple and introduce us to a new family to fall in love with.

Nate and Paige are secondary characters that both appeared in the Mason family series. Nate is also connected to the Landry family via his brother Dominick.

These two both come to the story with baggage that should make a relationship not work, but it somehow does- evolving from a friendship to so much more. I loved watching the journey these two went on and appreciated the friends and family that surrounded them to help along the way. Some of these family members are Paige’s adopted brothers - the Carmichaels - and I am curious to get to know them better.

Much like the title, this is a sweet story that features a couple being willing to face their fears and show each other who they and what is important.

My heart opens to Cooper Haywood the moment we meet. How can it resist? He’s charming, devastatingly handsome, and sweeps me off my feet before I realize the impact he’s making. And then it’s too late.

We fall too fast to worry about the consequences.

We love so hard that we ache when we’re apart.

Even though I have a past that still haunts me and he has a future that could put us at risk, none of that matters when we’re together.

Until it does.

And then everything changes.

Although the best thing he ever gave me now calls me Mommy, I can’t help but wonder if Cooper Haywood and that fateful storm were one and the same.

Elizabeth's Review

4.5 stars - One of the Best

Review Copy Provided by Author

The Best I’ve Ever Had is a unique book - the trope itself is not, but the way Ms Scott presents the characters and their experiences is.

This is one of those books where I have the challenge of making sure you go read the book, but don’t give too much away, so please forgive me if I don’t share as much info as you’d like!

Cooper and Story and the main characters in The Best I’ve Ever Had and I found myself really liking them both. I found myself rooting for them to find a way forward and hoped that they would each be able to address the baggage they brought to the table. When we first meet these two, they are in their early 20s and close to college graduation. Both Cooper and Story presented themselves as much more mature than I would have expected for people of this age.

Ms Scott weaves a tale around these characters that pulled me in and wouldn’t let go. From instant attractions, to secrets, and … (yeah you have to read the book for that) there is a lot going on. Ms Scott does an excellent job of balancing all of the issues Cooper and Story have going on with their budding relationship.

This is a emotion packed Stand alone that you won’t want to put down once you get started.

On The Honey Side by Staci Hart ~ New Release & Review

On the Honey Side by Staci Hart, a brand new grump sunshine, rom-com, is available NOW! This new release is the perfect weekend binge. Grab your copy today, available now on Amazon and in Kindle Unlimited!

Amazon | Goodreads

"On the Honey Side is as heartwarming as it is hilarious. It blends the humor of matchmaking with the heat of a slow burn for a cocktail I can't resist and will beg for time and time again. Sweet, touching, and subtly steamy, it was the perfect romantic comedy to get lost in at the end of a hectic day. An easy five-star and must read of 2022!" - bestselling author Kandi Steiner

No one can ever have Keaton Meyer.
Least of all me.
The brooding construction manager is a man of myth and legend, rarely seen in the wild. Once upon a time, he was the star quarterback, the smiling homecoming king, royalty in our small town. Until tragedy struck. And then he disappeared completely.
Now he’s resurfaced, and I can’t keep my eyes off him.
He’s an island surrounded by lava, bound by a desert and guarded by dragons. I don’t stand a sunshine’s chance in a hail storm.
Our siblings disagree and are out to prove it, nudging us into each other in the hopes we’ll fall. But with our town in tumult and the two of us firmly in the middle, nothing between us is easy. And when he’s faced with an impossible decision, I learn the truth of what I already knew.
No one can have Keaton Meyer.
And I have the broken heart to prove it.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life -- a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey. When she's not writing, she's reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

The Blum sisters are cursed.... That's what everyone in town, including Daisy Blum thinks. But, what if the one person in town who knows the same kind of grief is the one to end the curse?
In On The Honey Side, we return the the Blum's small Texas town as the community faces another challenge that pits the sisters one the side of good against some of their neighbors. The focus this time is on oldest sister, Daisy. She is paired with Keaton Meyer, all around good guy.

As with previous books around the Blum family, I genuinley liked the sisters and enjoyed getting to know Daisy better here. She carries a certain weight to her that is understandable as you learn her history, but she has a grace about her that endears her and had me rooting for her. Keaton is probably the one person in town who understands Daisy's history best as he has similar experience. But, he is the dark to Daisy's light - don't get me wrong, I liked Keaton, but I appreciated the dicotomy to how they handled their mutual strife.

This is a hopeful story that does an excelelnt job of blending the town centric drama and the blossoming friendship/realtionship between Daisy and Keaton. The secondary cast, especially Keaton's siblings, played a key roll is moving things along and finding solutions that maybe were a little outside the box. I am very much enjoying this series! I hope that Poppy Blum has a story soon and my fingers are crossed that the Meyer brothers may make future appearances too!

Lives are on the line at Engine 6 … and so are hearts.

Newly-minted firefighter Abby Sullivan is exactly where she wants to be: Chicago Fire Department’s Engine 6, the station where her mom blazed a trail as one of the first female firefighters in the city. The first to fall in the line of duty, too. All Abby wants is to succeed, but that’s a tough proposition when people only see a feel-good story, a token woman failing at a man’s job, or the princess in need of protection. And the man tasked with watching her six?

Lieutenant Roman Rossi, the one person she can’t let close.

Having the daughter of his boss and nemesis under his wing shouldn’t be a problem for Roman—he’s a professional and can treat her like any other firefighter rookie. Except she happens to be the gorgeous woman he once shared a slice of cherry pie with, followed by the hottest, sweetest, most pulse-pounding kiss of his life. He didn’t know her name but he had planned to find out.

Now Roman knows exactly who Abby is: a threat to his self-control more dangerous than a five-alarm blaze. Lust has no place in the firehouse, and a distraction like Abby with her electric blue eyes, waves of flame-red hair, and freckles Roman wants to map with his tongue, is one he can ill afford.

Because one wrong move … and it could all go up in smoke.

Up in Smoke is the first in the brand new Hot in Chicago Rookies series about firefighters navigating the trials of new jobs and sizzling romances as they find their place in the world and the love of a lifetime.

With Up in Smoke, Kate Meader brings us back to Engine 6 of the Chicago Fire Department. With this book we not only get to see some of the much loved Dempsey family (of the Hot in Chicago series) we also get to meet 3 brand new fire fighters (Abby, Jude, and Sam). Abby is the headliner for this adventure.

Abby is a character I liked. She fought for what she wanted and followed a path that is still not exactly even for women. She did this understanding that sacrifices might have to be made, she didn’t expect that might mean leaving her heart beside a pie plate after finding out that her best “date” ever is now her new boss, Roman. Roman fits the Hot in Chicago hero mold to a “t”- he’s a great dad, brother, and fire fighter.

The storytelling here is excellent. Not only does the sexual tension between Abby and Roman radiate off the page, but the friendship and connection do as well. I appreciated that Ms Meader let’s us see both Abby and Roman face their insecurities on the road to a potential happy ending. Add in a great secondary cast of friends, family, and the famous Dempseys and this book cements this as a series I want to spend more time with.

St. Louis Mavericks star defender Lars Jansson is dead set against relationships. A new love makes him wonder if maybe he can change, but first, he must confront the truth about who he is.

Lars

On the ice, I’m unstoppable. If anyone is in my way, it’s simple—I move them. Hockey is my life, and I don’t have the patience for relationships spanning more than one night. But when I meet a woman so bold and intriguing I can’t help wanting more, I’m blindsided by the revelation that no matter what I do, I may never be enough for her.

Sheridan

One night. That’s all it was supposed to be. But Lars Jansson is larger than life in every way—how could one night be enough? It’s risky for me to see him again, and to let myself fall for the stoic hockey player who is charming in his own way. He thinks it’s his truth that could undo us, but he couldn’t be more wrong about that—it’s mine.

USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author Kat Mizera is a South Florida native. Born in Miami Beach with a healthy dose of wanderlust, she's called Los Angeles, Long Island, upstate New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Atlanta home. She's never been able to pick which locale is her favorite, but if pressed, she'd probably choose the west coast.

A typical PTA mom with a wonderful and supportive husband (Kevin) and two amazing boys (Nick and Max), Kat can usually be found scrapbooking or indulging in her second love (after writing) - traveling. Greece is one of her favorite places in the world. She loves that Athens is a big city with a small-town feel. The food, beaches and culture keep her going back as often as possible.

Elizabeth's Review

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Provided by Author

Hard Limit is the second book in the St Louis Maverick's series and follows Lars, a secondary character from the first books in the series. This book covers a lot of emotional territory and touches are several hard issues while also letting us see Lars attempt a romantic relationship with Sheridan. I don't want to give too much away, but want to tell you why you should read this book!

The Characters:
Sheridan is a "plus size" model in the process of recovering from a serious accident and injury. She is a great example of perserverence and grace while facing challenges. She comes to us with baggage that impacts how she approaches things, but she remains someone that I liked and would have wanted to be friends with.
Lars is a Swedish professional hockey player with a few quirks. I loved watching him figure out that life could be better with someone like Sheridan in it. His interactions with teammates and Sheridan were endearing and cemented his good guy status.

The story:
A definitely entertaining meet cute. The developing relationship between Sheridan and Lars was fun to watch. The struggles and difficulties both characters faced made them more "real" and I appreciated the way they dealt with these issues both individually and together.

The secondary cast:
Lars is part of a hockey team, so the secondary cast is a bit larger, but they play key roles, especially in guiding Lars through some of his struggles with understanding women. There are secondary stories from the previous book and glimpses of things that may be coming in the series, all things I am curious about and have me already looking forward to the next book.

Given all that, why only 4 stars?
There are two reasons for that.....
1 - The antagonist. There is an explanation of "why," but it felt rushed and I would have liked more information to really feel like I understand what was behind the scenes.
2-The fact that this is the second book in a potentially large series.
These are both personal preference things and they don't take away from the story.... I am definitely looking forward to seeing where this series goes next!

Review Round Up ~ February 17

New(er) Releases:

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

The Purveli is book 3 in Ms Duvall’s outer space adventures. The time line here is mostly parallel to that of book 2 and follows what happened to Gifted One Ava after the ship she was traveling on was attacked.

This is a story that continues the “alien” world building begun in previous books, slowly expanding the knowledge base so that the reader doesn’t feel overwhelmed. There is a solid balance between action and friendship/relationship building as the story moves fairly quickly. The characters are all easy to like and root for.

Technically, this is a stand alone read, but…… I personally think the reader would enjoy the series more if the books are read in order. At the very least, this should be read after the first book in the series. Some exposure to Ms Duvall’s Immortal Guardians series would also add to the enjoyment of this series as there are references to back story contained there. For some reason I thought this book would end this particular series, but it appears there is at least one more book and I am looking forward to that one as well!

Review Copy Purchased as a "Free" read

The world of the Harris family and the Bethel Green F C is one I have enjoyed in the past, so when this related story came up as a free read, I was glad to grab it.

Freya and Mac are friends, self described “best mates” until they get a wild hair and decide to mix things up a bit. I enjoyed watching these two flounder their way dating - even though neither would call it that. One of the more touching pieces of this story was the way that insecurity was tackled head on- even from the famous footballer!

This is part of a series and the secondary cast that is referenced is somewhat large, but the active secondary cast is smaller and more manageable. There are hints that make you curious, but it so many references that the larger series detracts from the story being told here.
Reading this definitely made me want to go back and read the Bethel books that I have missed!

Confession time.... This book has been on my TBR for a long time. I'm not sure why I haven't read it before now, but I'm glad I finally did.
One of the issues with going so far into an author's back list when you've been reading them is that I "knew" the final outcome of the main characters here going into the book as they appear as secondary characters in stories of Ms Harlow's that I have read. What I did not know is the journey they took to get there.
I enjoyed getting to know Mia and Lucas and seeing Paris through their eyes. This is told strictly from Mia's point of view and I would have loved to have been able to get into Lucas's head too. Mia's evolution and being pushed outside her comfort zone made me like her even more. I especially loved the friends who called her on her crazy, even from thousands of miles away.
Even with know the ultimate ending, I am curious to read Yanked and the companion books that go with Frenched. I am hoping Mia and Lucas also play key secondary roles in the upcoming release, Taste.

Every now and then I come across a book that, when I am done, I realize has left me a bit different than I was when I started the book. Someone Like You is one of those. My challenge now is to tell you enough so that you can decide if you want to read the book, but not so much that I risk ruining the book experience for you.

Someone Like You is a bit of a crossover in that the main character, Roni, first appeared in Ms Force’s Fatal series. That said this is a complete standalone and can be read that way.

When we meet Roni, she has just experienced a tragic event. The story here follows her as she deals with the grief associated with that and begins to move forward. One of the things I appreciated most about Ms Force’s approach here is that she let Roni be honest in her feelings and gives her an excellent support network. I will say that there is a bit of “best case scenario” here that may not be 100% realistic, but it’s a fictional story and I don’t know about you, but I want that best case…..

A piece of Roni’s support network is the Wild Widows and they (along with Roni’s family) make up the majority of the secondary cast. This is a group that I enjoyed getting to know and hope to see more of as this series develops. There are multiple pearls of wisdom given out here that I found relevant and touching. Seeing Roni’s journey and some of the challenges she faces have in turned challenged the way I see certain events and the responses to them.

Readers need to go into this book knowing that it is an emotional read. It’s a reading journey worth taking and it may leave you a bit different on the other side, but I honestly think the changes will be for the better in terms of empathy and understanding.

As you can guess from her Las Vegas Sidewinders series, Kat loves hockey and occasionally writes articles about her favorite team, the Florida Panthers. The rest of the time, she writes novels: sexy, romantic fiction that she hopes makes you as happy as it makes her. There's something enticing about hockey players and romance...

Just One Favor by Stephanie Rose ~ New Release & Revew

Tyler Bennett and I hate each other.

The annoying jerk my parents forced me to play with as a kid grew up to be a sexy, grumpy baker who still can’t stand me. Sure, maybe I enjoy our bitter banter, his cocky smirk, his chocolate chip cookies. But there’s a reason I can’t play nice.

You’re wondering why—if I hate the guy so much—did I agree to be his fake date to his cousin’s wedding? Look. Just because I love being a pain in the man’s well-formed butt doesn’t mean I want someone else torturing him. Especially not the ex-fiancée who left him for his best friend.

One night of faking it takes an unexpected turn. Heated glances, lingering touches, that arrogant mouth against mine. One night of getting swept away in an attraction that maybe isn’t so one-sided after all.

Aside from this new, tentative friendship laced with sexual tension, something else has grown out of that night.

And Tyler and I will have to figure it all out…in about nine months.

Author’s note: Just One Favor is an enemies-to-lovers standalone romance with a hot side of longing, sexually-charged banter, a broken hotel bed, and chocolate cream pie.

In Just One Favor, a new standalone, we meet Tyler and Olivia. These two are in their mid 30s and have 30 years of poking at and antagonizing each other.

When we meet them here, there is a small change in the way Olivia approaches Tyler and it sets a series of events in motion that will change both of them forever.

Ms Rose does an excellent job of showing us how Tyler & Olivia have evolved, matured, and start to understand what really might be behind their behavior. I enjoyed seeing their interactions and how they moved from potential antagonist to awkward to friendly and more.

The emotional story line here is strong and I think it’s one that a lot of people can relate too. Both Tyler and Olivia have issues that lie just beneath the surface and influence behavior. I appreciated how Ms Rose handled this aspect to the story with grace.

I don’t want to go into too much detail because there are many aspects of the story that I think everyone should experience for themselves. I will say that I am thrilled to have a new standalone read from Stephanie Rose. Her characters are always “real” and relatable- and that is very true here!
