My rating: 5 of 5 stars - One of the Best

Review Copy Provided by Author

I think I may have found my first 5 star read of 2018. One of the things I look for, one of the things that make a book go that extra mile to be a 5 star read, is the idea of “Does this book make me think?” or “Can I see myself as this character?” After Care does both for me.

While Edie (the star of After Care) and I aren’t exactly in the same place in our lives, there are enough similarities that I can definitely relate to where she is emotionally during most of the book. We meet Edie as she is on vacation with her children in Hawaii. We see her dealing with the fallout of being cancer free, a divorcee, and her young adult children beginning to leave home.

After Care was not an “escape” read for me. It was a put the kindle down and think about what just happened read. Watching Edie and her children form friendships with an unlikely group of people and seeing the developing romantic relationships really did make me stop and wonder if I could be as brave had I been in the same situation.

The fact that Edie’s emotions seem to leap off the page speaks to Ms. Dunbar’s ability to pull the reader in – almost like being a fly on the wall of Edie’s mind. Edie and Tommy (her love interest) are both great characters that I easily became invested in. The secondary cast is strong and has me curious – I wonder if they have stories of their own somewhere.

Ms. Dunbar is a new author for me. Several of her books on sitting on my To be Read list and they will be working their way up to the top soon!

When The Stars Come Out ~ Laura Trentham ~ New Release and Review

When the Stars Come Out
A Cottonbloom Novel
By Laura Trentham

Cottonbloom. A beautiful, faraway place where a woman can escape her past—and find reason to stay forever in Laura Trentham's When the Stars Come Out. . .

Willa Brown never planned to stay in Cottonbloom. She was on the way to somewhere else when she landed there and found work at the Abbot brothers’ garage. . .and a sense of comfort and safety that she had never known. The same holds true for Jackson Abbott himself. With one glance in her direction, he can make Willa’s heart melt. But what begins as an unrequited crush turns into something far more powerful than Willa could have ever imagined. . .

Jackson’s most meaningful relationship has always been with his car—and he’s not afraid to admit it. Still, he can’t help but become emotionally entangled with his new star mechanic Willa, who is definitely hiding some dark secrets of her own beneath the hood. Jackson desperately wants Willa to trust him, and to seek protection in his arms. But even as the two slowly surrender to their shared attraction, the danger lurking in Willa’s past remains a stubborn obstacle. Can she open up enough to give them both a chance at having real and lasting love?

Ms. Trentham has done it again and added a great entry to the Cottonbloom series.
Jackson and Mia are characters that were introduced in the previous book of the series and it was fun to get to know them better here. I found myself genuinely liking and rooting for both characters to find their happy ending.
It was a pleasure to watch the emotional blossoming that took place, especially in Willa as she learned to embrace the people around her - not just Jackson - and to also face the demons in her past.
One of the things I have enjoyed most about the Cottonbloom series is the way Ms. Trentham has the books structured. Each is connected to the others and previous main characters will make cameos, but each entry in the series truly stands on it's own and could easily be picked up and read independently.
If you have read and enjoyed authors like Jill Shalvis and Susan Mallery, then Ms. Trentham's Cottonbloom series would be right up your alley too.

Designer: RBA Designs
Release Date: January 30, 2018
*Each Bishop Brothers novel is an interconnected standalone*

After wining and dining his dates and giving them the best night of their lives, he always sends flowers and calls the next day—even if it’s to say, let’s just be friends. His mama taught him manners after all and his southern blood knows how to be a gentleman. Still, that isn’t enough to tame the wildest of the Bishop brothers.

River Lancaster has finally met the man of her dreams. Too bad after six months of romantic bliss, she finds out he’s married. With a broken heart and blind rage, she books herself a ticket to Key West, Florida. Tired of cheaters and liars, she’s set on escaping to forget he ever existed. Who needs a man when there’s an all-you-can-drink margarita bar, anyway? That’s what she tells herself until she bumps into the right guy who can make all those bad memories disappear.
Even if it’s only temporarily.

Two weeks on the beach is what they both need. No strings attached, no expectations, no broken hearts. Too bad the universe has other plans—one that’ll change the entire course of their lives in just nine short months.

Excerpt:
Her body was leaning into mine, shivering from the air-conditioning vent blowing right above her. I pointed the air in the opposite direction, and my other hand went into her hair, pulling her face toward mine.
“A couple of miles,” I hissed against her lips, parting them for me.
The cranberry juice she’d mixed with her vodka tasted so fucking sweet on her tongue. If she gave me any more of it, I was going to shred her dress right here, dip my face between her legs, and lick her cunt.
Fuck, I couldn’t wait to taste that pussy and see if it was as sweet as the juice.
This driver needed to step on it.
I wasn’t a patient man.
As if she sensed that, she pulled back just a little, and I bit into her bottom lip, holding it, tugging it, before I said, “I’m going to fucking devour you.” Finally releasing her, I turned my attention to her neck, smelling, kissing, gnawing the skin that led to her ear.
“Oh my God,” she groaned, and she tried to slide her fingers through the slots between the buttons of my shirt.
She went lower, brushing back and forth across my cock, and that was when I shackled her wrists in my hand.
“Please,” she whined.
“You’re going to get it all fucking night; don’t you worry.”
We pulled into the front of my high-rise and came to a stop, and I opened the back door.
“I’ve got it, sir,” the driver said.
“I’m good,” I replied, sliding James into my arms and carrying her out.
The doorman didn’t greet me by name, a sign that he was new, but held the door open for us, and I took us through the lobby and into the elevator.
James’s tongue traced the outline of my ear as I pressed the button for my floor and settled us against the back wall.
“Make it hurry,” she breathed.
My thoughts were the same.
When we got to my floor, I rushed us down the short hallway and waved my fob over the reader. It clicked as it unlocked, and I brought us into the bedroom, setting James on her feet right by the bed.
I stood in front of her and said, “Turn around.”
I waited until her back faced me, and then I kissed across it while I lowered the zipper at the same time. She turned again when I was done, and she let the dress fall to the floor.
The only thing she wore now was the pair of black heels.
No bra, no panties.
I leaned back to admire her body. She had tits that were no bigger than my palms, nipples that were small and hard, and a bare pussy with the sweetest fucking clit at the top.
“Jesus Christ,” I moaned. She went to take the heels off, and I said, “Hell no. Keep them on.”
I looped my finger into the Windsor knot and pulled it loose. Before I had it off, James fisted both ends of my tie and used them to pull me toward her. The movement caused my lips to slam against hers, and the tie slithered down my chest, followed by the buttons from my shirt that she had torn apart.
She wanted my cock.
She was getting my tongue first.

Wow!
Ms. Mann is a newer author to me and she knocked it out of the park with this one. Once I got started with Signed I had a hard time putting it down!
We are thrown into the action right away with James and Brett and it is definitely a wild ride. Both are characters that are fairly easy to like, especially once you look past the rough edges. I appreciated that once personal and professional issues came into conflict they tried to do what they thought the right thing was - even if hurt in the process.
Both James and Brett seemed to mature during the story. For James is was an actual maturing process - as she was just 18 and had been semi sheltered by her success. For Brett, it was an emotional maturity that came with letting himself become attached to someone.
This is a good balance of intrigue/work, relationship building, and sexy time. A small, but strong secondary cast adds some humor and balance to the story. I enjoyed Signed so much that I am hoping Brett's partners will have their own books soon.
