Review Round Up ~ November 30

New Releases:

Born to Be a Cowboy (Montana Strong, #3)Born to Be a Cowboy by R.C. Ryan

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

Born to be a Cowboy is a strong conclusion to the story of the Monroe brothers of Haller Creek, Montana. This installment focuses on youngest brother, Finn, a lawyer. This is a feel good read focusing on family with a touch of sexy and a lot of intrigue thrown in.

The strong cast features Finn and his love interest/client, Jessie, as well as his brothers and adopted family. I enjoyed seeing Finn and the rest of the Monroe clan take Jessie in and help her during her time of need and solve the riddles around her missing aunt.

Author Ryan does an excellent job of blending the intrigue, romantic, and relationship elements of the story so that all of them feel complete without competing with one another. This is a complete stand alone novel, but the story would be a stronger read if the Montana Strong books are read in order.

Destiny Dawns (Santini #4)Destiny Dawns by Leslie Pike

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Author

This was a quick read in the Santini world.

Dion and Anya are both entertaining characters and it was a treat to see the other Santini siblings pop in and make this more interesting. My only complaint about the book is that I wish it was longer! I wanted more time with these characters and their story.

Just Say Christmas (Escape to New Zealand Book 13)Just Say Christmas by Rosalind James

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Loyal readers of Ms James’ Escape to New Zealand series will be excited to return to the much loved characters in Just Say Christmas.

While the book focuses mainly on two of the prior main couples and them taking the next steps in their relationships, we also see the larger series cast play key roles. Due to the “continuation” aspect of the story and the larger than normal cast/dual storylines, I would caution new readers about starting here.

In typical Ms James fashion, we see several potentially sticky issues handled with grace and dignity. Family and the strength of a true partnership is at the core of the book. I enjoyed the excellent story telling, the fantastic characters and seeing their journeys. Just Say Christmas also primed me for wanting more - I’d love to see a full story for Tom and Ella as well as more from Nyree’s brother’s Kane and Luke.

One Timer ~ Toni Aleo ~ New Release and Review

The Assassins are BACK! One Timer by Toni Aleo is available now!
Universal -- getbook.at/OneTimer
You’ve known Harper Allen and Jakob Titov since you met them in Taking Shots. You know their story already, right? Ha! You only think you do. In One-Timer, they’ll tell it for themselves. Harper has been hurt so many times, and she has no interest in anything more than a one-time thing, but Jakob Titov has other ideas. He is looking for his forever. He has his sights set on a girl who is so good at blocking his attempts, she could be a star goalie in the NHL. Jakob is persistent, though, and he knows what he wants: Harper—forever. together, he knows they’ll make one hell of a team. The last twenty years have been even better than they could have dreamed. But when their daughter comes home, informing them she’s giving up everything for a boy, they know it’s past time to tell the truth about the shutout they scored all those years ago to get where they are. It wasn’t easy. But sometimes, that one-time thing leads to a fairy-tale kind of ending.
Don't forget about Power Play - coming December 31st!
Universal -- getbook.at/PowerPlayTA
About the Author:
My name is Toni Aleo and I’m a total dork.
I am a wife, mother of two and a bulldog, and also a hopeless romantic.
I am the biggest Shea Weber fan ever, and can be found during hockey season with my nose pressed against the Bridgestone Arena’s glass, watching my Nashville Predators play!
When my nose isn’t pressed against the glass, I enjoy going to my husband and son’s hockey games, my daughter’s dance competition, hanging with my best friends, taking pictures, scrapbooking, and reading the latest romance novel.
I have a slight Disney and Harry Potter obsession, I love things that sparkle, I love the color pink, I might have been a Disney Princess in a past life… probably Belle.
… and did I mention I love hockey?

I’m going to be honest - I had to refresh myself as to which couple was featured in Taking Shots.

The approach Ms Aleo takes here - parents letting a beloved child know that even the best relationships take hard work and don’t always travel a smooth road - was unique and I appreciated how it tied the “older” Assassin books with the stories being told for the newer generation.

Harper and Jakob are characters that are easy to like and I found myself rooting for them. The “drama” in their relationship seemed much more organic and less “for the sake of drama” than in some of the other Assassin stories, I definitely think this one of Ms Aleo’s stronger recent books.

About half the length of most romances, this is the perfect weekend afternoon read.

The Beast of Beswick by Amalie Howard ~ New Release and Review

Release Date: November 26

Beauty and the Beast meets Taming of the Shrew in this laugh-out-loud and heartfelt Regency romance.
Lord Nathaniel Harte, the disagreeable Duke of Beswick, spends his days smashing porcelain, antagonizing his servants, and snarling at anyone who gets too close. With a ruined face like his, it's hard to like much about the world. Especially smart-mouthed harpies—with lips better suited to kissing than speaking—who brave his castle with indecent proposals.
But Lady Astrid Everleigh will stop at nothing to see her younger sister safe from a notorious scoundrel, even if it means offering herself up on a silver platter to the forbidding Beast of Beswick himself. And by offer, she means what no highborn lady of sound and sensible mind would ever dream of—a tender of marriage with her as his bride.

This was a treat of a take on Beauty and the Beast in a historical setting.

Astrid is a unique and entertaining heroine. I appreciated that she identified a solution to a the problem facing her and her sister and didn’t take no for an answer. It was a pleasure to watch her display her strength of ideals and intellect even when society made it less than fashionable to do so.

Thane, in the role of Beast, was a surprisingly likeable character once the author started to peel back some of his gruffest layers.

The evolution of both characters and their relationship was sweet to watch, even when there were heartbreaking moments as they learned to trust each other. Add in an excellent secondary cast of family, servants, a good villain and you have a truly fun read.

One of the sub plots for the story is the season and potential marriage of Astrid’s sister, Isabelle. I would love to see a book featuring her story in full.

Newer Releases:

An Unexpected Gift (Insta-Spark Book 4)An Unexpected Gift by Melanie Moreland

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Copy Provided by Author

This is a fun, quick, sweet read.
Evan and Holly are both likeable characters that it's impossible not to root for. Ms. Moreland does a great job of capturing their story even given how short the book is.
The supporting cast is small, but there is one key player towards the end that I hope ends up in a story in the future, and that is Evan's brother in law Simon.

All Fired UpAll Fired Up by Lori Foster

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Copy Provided by Author

All Fired Up is book three in the Road for Love series by Ms Foster. In this installment we meet Mitch, a brother no one knew about and see his instant connection with Charlotte, the quasi sister of Brodie and Jack (The older Crews brothers.)

This book is a little bit different than the first two books in the series in that it's much sweeter. Mitch is just as Alpha as his brothers, but his character has an underlying vulnerability that we haven't seen in the series before.

The plot, while similar in the intrigue elements, is also a little different. The core of the story is about Mitch discovering and integrating into the Crews family. I really enjoyed the slight differences in All Fired Up. I enjoyed getting to know Mitch and Charlotte as well as getting to see the older Crews boys again.

This is a well written and entertaining addition to the series and reaffirms Ms Fosters place on my must read list.

Excerpt
When I finally come face to face with the street artist standing on the side of the pavement, his guitar case open and full of rolled-up notes and change, I understand why his grandfather told me I’d recognize him with the self-assurance of an avid believer.
I’ve never seen someone like him before.
He is beautiful, true, but that’s not what stands out to me. He is radiant.
It’s like his presence has a presence. He sucks the air out of everything in his vicinity, making it impossible not to look at him. Malachy is tailor-made for a huge, colossal heartbreak. Everything about him—his tattered jeans, filthy boots, white shirt, and leather jacket that was broken in decades ago—screams trouble. He looks like a seventies heartthrob. An icon. A Terry Richardson muse. Bruce Springsteen pre-fame.
His voice is like honey and warm spices. It lulls me into a place in my mind I’ve never been before, even though it’s far from beautiful. It is gruff, throaty, and smoky. When someone bumps my shoulder to get closer to him, I snap out of my reverie and realize what I’m listening to.
“One” by U2.
The coincidence is strange. I try to tell myself it’s nothing. This is Ireland. U2 is a national treasure.
His eyes are squeezed shut as he sings. It’s like no one exists other than him and his guitar. Something warm rushes through my skin, like a heat wave, and I shudder in delight.
Warmth.
I always thought there was something melancholy about street performers—the way people walk past them, ignoring their music, their art, their passion. But this guy, he’s the one doing the ignoring. The tables have turned. He’s got the crowd eating from the palm of his hand. Every woman here is under a thick, sweet spell. He’s got that Harry Styles quality that makes girls want to bed him and older women want to adopt him. The men are a cross between impatient, annoyed, and jealous. You can see it in the way they tap their feet, check their watches, nudge their wives and girlfriends to move it.
The song ends, and Malachy Doherty cracks his eyes open and stares directly at me, like he knew I’d be here. Like he watched me watching him through closed eyes. Disoriented—and for some reason wanting to do something, anything—I throw a bill into his guitar case and look away, realizing to my horror that I threw the fifty euros his grandpa gave me. Everyone around me murmurs and whistles. They think it was intentional. I can feel my face flaming red. I bet he thinks I want to sleep with him.
Do I? Probably. But should he know that? Hell no.

Oh wow - I seriously don’t think I’ve ever read anything like this book before - and I mean that in the best possible way.

The basic story- Boys meets girl, boys loses girl, massive misunderstandings take place, boy reconnects with girl - has been told a million times with just as many variations that keep readers coming back.

What Ms Shen created with In The Unlikely Event transcends that basic story line. The main characters of Rory and Mal are two people that I sometimes didn’t like, but I still wanted to see them get their (collective) acts together.

The complicated circumstances of Rory, Mal, and various secondary characters weave in and out of secrets, intrigue, and some down right funny moments.

I don’t want to give anything away about this well written and entertaining book, but I will say that it is unique and I’m glad I was able to read it over a weekend (one day actually) because I would have been very frustrated it I had to stop to go to work!

Excerpt
Her words break on a sob, and the elegant line of her shoulders trembles. “No one like you.” I palm her breasts, squeezing the tight nipples between my fingers. Her indrawn breath tells me she likes it. “Anything you want,” she pants, circling her ass on me. “Take it.” “I want today with you,” I say, changing the angle of my thrust slightly, but hitting a new spot that makes her moan. “I can’t.” I force myself to stop abruptly and start easing out. “No!” She reaches back and grabs my ass. “Don’t you dare.” I stop pulling out, but don’t move. She squirms, tries to grind on my cock, but I grip her hips, holding her still. “Son of a bitch,” she growls. “Finish me, Doc.” “No.” “Do you think I don’t feel how hard that cock is? You want this, too.” “Obviously,” I force my voice to casual, like it doesn’t matter to me one way or the other. “But I want a day with you more. What’s it going to be?” I push in and give her a quick, shallow thrust. “Oh, yes.” She starts circling her hips, and I stop again. “Bastard!” “I’ve told you my terms.” My cock hates me, silently cursing me in four different languages for not finishing this right now. “One day,” she concedes breathlessly. “I can give you one day.” I take off the reins and fuck her until we’re both shaking. We almost fall when our orgasms hit. I ease out, sit on the shower bench and set her on my lap. Greedy, thirsty, we kiss until my lips are numb, her fingers burrowing into my wet hair, my fingers tunneled into hers. I break the kiss, taking her face between my slick hands and searching her eyes. “One day,” I remind her, panting. She nods, sucking my bottom lip smiling. “One day.”

Elizabeth's Review

My rating: 5 of 5 stars - One of the Best

Review Copy Provided by Author

This 5 star review is for the duet that includes The Kingmaker and The Rebel King....

If you have followed me for any length of time, you know the I DO NOT like duets. I have been burned so many times by them that I actively avoid them. Why then did I read this one? Simple - it’s Kennedy Ryan. Not only has she been a favorite author for a while, she is a thorough researcher and uses her platform to challenge readers social conceptions/biases without “preaching.” Ms Ryan has a unique talent for bringing issues to the forefront while also making every reader feel seen.

This duet has a suspense/intrigue element that is best experienced first hand, so in an effort to not give anything away, I’m going to tell you why I don’t like duets and how this one changes the game.

1) Does it REALLY need 2 books? In this case yes. The Kingmaker has the history of Maxim and Lennix that starts when she is 13. It is the book that answers the question of “can these two be a couple?” The Rebel King’s time line is much shorter, but asks the question of “now that they found each other, can they make it work?”

2) Drawn out or overdone sexy times for filler. Yeah, that doesn’t happen here. There are plenty of intimate moments between Lennix and Maxim, but they all help drive the story and confirm the relationship between the two. Some of their most intimate moments aren’t in the bedroom and have them fully dressed. The emotional connection between the two radiates off the page.

3) Drama for the sake of drama. Yes, there is plenty of drama here, but it’s never feels gratuitous. There were some surprises and some things that I saw coming, but how they were handled help show the depth of relationships and emotional growth on multiple fronts.

If you are looking for a light, quick read then this is not the duet for you. If you are looking for complex, unique characters facing challenges and changing dynamics then dive right in! I will tease you a little bit - I loved the ending of The Rebel King. It was the perfect balance of resolution and “what happens next?” That leaves the door open for the reader’s imagination to spin the story out.... or maybe there is more to the story?

The man I swore to hate will have it all, and wants me at his side. But power is a game, and we’re the pawns and players.
Facing insurmountable odds, will we win the world, or will we lose it all?

Gilded Lily ~ Staci Hart ~ Cover Reveal

Gilded Lily, the second in the Bennett Brothers series from Staci Hart, is coming in only 17 days. I am so excited! Check out the beautiful cover for this upcoming release. I love the vibe of this series and the covers are to die for! Mark your calendars for December 5th!

They say there’s no such thing as perfect. But I’ve built my life to perfection—the perfect boyfriend, the perfect apartment, the perfect career planning celebrity weddings. My job—my only job—is to make sure every event is absolutely and completely perfect.

What’s not perfect? Kash Bennet.

And I wish I didn’t find that so appealing. I could have told you every perfectly imperfect thing about the gardener at Longbourne. Like his hair, lush and black and far too long. Or his nose, the flat bridge of a Greek god, bent a little like it’s been broken. Or his size. Beastly. Roped and corded with muscles, gleaming with sweat and peppered with dirt.

There’s no escaping him, not if I’m going to use his family’s flower shop for my events.

But nothing is what it seems. And in the span of a heartbeat, my perfect life is turned inside out.

They say the best way to get over somebody is to get under somebody new. When Kash offers his services to the cause, it sounds like the perfect plan.

What’s not part of the plan? Falling in love with the gardener.

But they were right—there’s no such thing as perfect.

And I’m the fool who finds out the hard way.

Everyone hates parts of their job.
Maybe it’s the paperwork. Maybe it’s the day-to-day grind. Maybe it’s that client who never knows what they want, or the guy who always cooks fish in the microwave.
But not me. I love every corner of the Longbourne Flower Shop, every flower, every petal, every stem. I love the greenhouse, and I love Mrs. Bennet, my boss. I love creating, and I love being a florist. I don’t hate anything at all.
Except for Luke Bennet.
The Bennet brothers have come home to help their mom save the flower shop, and Luke is at the helm. His smile tells a tale of lust, loose and easy. He moves with the grace of a predator, feral and wild. A thing unbridled, without rules or constraint. When he comes home to save Longbourne, I almost can’t be mad at him. Almost.
He doesn’t remember that night I’ll never forget. That kiss, touched with whiskey and fire. It branded me like a red-hot iron. But it meant nothing to him.
Everyone hates part of their job, and I hate Luke Bennet.
Because if I don’t, I’ll fall in love with him.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life -- a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey. When she's not writing, she's reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

Desire at Roosevelt Ranch by Elise Faber ~ New Release and Review

This second chance small-town romance hits all the feels!
Desire at Roosevelt Ranch by Elise Faber is available now
Universal -- getbook.at/DesireatRR
Rex Roosevelt doesn’t believe in love. He believes in women, in sex, and in avoiding any and all types of responsibility. What he doesn’t believe in is playing the white knight by rescuing women . . . even though he’s been making a habit of doing just that over the last few months. Being the white knight is more in his twin’s wheelhouse. Justin spent a lifetime rescuing women from Rex’s ill-deeds before swooping in to save the day with the only woman Rex had ever felt the slightest bit of connection to. Of course, that connection had made him run and he’d blown his chance with Kelly Hamilton. Which was just as well. Rex was cold. He didn’t feel like normal men. He shut down and selfish and— She was better off. But lately, Rex had begun to feel. First, he’d been unable to steal his heart against the pleas of a gorgeous Italian woman and next . . . Tilly. She’d needed rescuing and even though Rex didn’t know the first damned thing about being a white knight, he’d helped her. And then? Well, she made him feel something he’d never thought his cold, dead heart would ever feel again. Love.

Elizabeth's Review

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Author

I am a new reader to Elise Faber and the Roosevelt Ranch series. In Desire, we come into the series with what seems to be a lot of water under the bridge and meet bad boy Rex and small town waitress Tilly.

Desire at Roosevelt Ranch is a very short book/longish novella. As such it appears that a good deal of Rex's back story is contained in some of the other books. There is enough information shared here that I felt like I knew Rex and Tilly, but everything felt very surface level.

I enjoyed this book and am now very curious about the previous stories. That said, I do wish that this was a longer story with more character and plat development.
