If you are looking for a perfect summer read, here is the formula...
Continuation of an awesome series + A swoony good guy hero + a strong heroine + a second chance at love. With Easy, Ms Rothert definitely delivers a touching second chance romance that had me hooked from the very beginning.

Erik (Easy) has been a character that I have enjoyed every time he has appeared in the Blaze series. I enjoyed getting to see him in his hometown to get to know him better. This book takes place in the off season, so there is not as much interaction with the rest of his Blaze teammates, but a few key players do sneak in on occasion. Allie is Erik's high school sweetheart who has been raising her nieces and nephew on her own for the last 10 years. She is an incredibly like able character that I found myself rooting for from the very beginning.

Ms Rothert does an excellent job of letting us see inside the heads and hearts of both Erik and Allie. These glimpses into the whys and hows of their initial break up and how they feel about each other now make me root for them both to find a happy ever after. One of the things I appreciated most about this story is that Ms Rothert made the children Allie is raising main characters in the story as well. While this is very much a romantic story about a rekindled relationship, it's also a story about maintaining and creating a new family.

Easy is very much a standalone read. It fits very well in to the Blaze world, but if a reader is joining midstream then this would be a good place to start.

Review Round Up ~ May 29

New Releases:

We Were OnceWe Were Once by S.L. Scott

4.5 stars - One of the Best

Review Copy Provided by Author

I have no idea where to start with this review because I don’t want to potentially spoil the story for anyone. This is definitely a book that you want to read and experience for yourself. I’m going to try to hit key pieces so you can get a glimpse of the awesome.

Characters:
Josh and Chloe are both interesting and easy to like. They meet as seniors at Yale and are a bit star crossed. I loved how they seemed to bring balance to each other and even at 20 and 21 seemed to have staying power and the problem solving skills needed for a long term relationship. The older versions had perseverance and I was proud of how they handled themselves is the face of adversity.

Characters who aren’t people:
Frankie and Dwayne Evans/Hemsworth add a humor element that is cute and made me giggle more than once

Story:
Be prepared for the story to take a hard right on you and it to totally be worth it. There were a couple of chapters where my heart was in my throat and I wasn’t sure what would happen. Everything got resolved in a way that I was happy with and I can’t recommend this emotional book enough.

Where did that 1/2 star go?
Okay, this is one of those things that could be a positive or negative depending on your reading style. I finished We Were Once and there were a couple of things that didn’t feel resolved to me. Both centered around the relationships Josh and Chloe had with their fathers. These aren’t huge things key to the story flow, but they niggled at me. I wanted to know how/why things played out a certain way.

Overall:
This is a unique read with wonderful characters and I highly recommend grabbing it!

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy provided by Publisher via Net Galley

This was a charming (and a little steamy) historical.
I enjoyed getting to know Sophie and Reese and loved their almost instant connection to each other. Their interactions ranged from sweet to very steamy and I wanted to see them to find a way to be together.

While the author does not explicitly tell us when this takes place, there are clues that tell us it is in the early 1800/1810's based on Reese discussing his service in the Infantry. Given that, the author does a good job of painting the struggle that Sophie faces given her family's situation.

When You Wish Upon a Rogue is a fun and entertaining read that makes me what to go back and read the first two books in the series, but there were several places where I found myself scratching my head. For one, Sophie seemed to have an extreme about of freedom for an unmarried lady of her social status. This freedom led to several other things that I found surprising regarding some of Sophie and Reese's interactions. The second issue for me was the blending of women of various social standings blending in a social situation.

This is a piece of fiction, so the things that seemed out of place are things that I have to try to let go as artistic license. Ms. Bennett is a newish author to me and based on this book I would be interested in reading more of her work.

The Sweetest Thing (Sapphire Bay #5)The Sweetest Thing by Leeanna Morgan

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Review Copy Provided by Contest

There are a lot of books where I get done and I’m wishing the book was longer, unfortunately this was not one of them. To be a bit brutal, this story could easily have been about 3/4 the length or even a bit shorter.

The author is new to me and I am picking the series up in the 5th book. One of the big struggles in long series is keeping readers up to date on previous leads while also keeping the story for the main characters moving. There were times here where it really seemed the secondary cast was taking over. This caused me to feel like I didn’t really know either of the leads.

I also struggled a little bit with the relationship between the lead characters. They spent very little time together, they seemed to have little communication between visits and were arguing half the time. Given that scenario, how can strong romantic feelings develop?

If someone has been reading this series from day 1, this could be a great book for them. There were not any major flaws, but I will say that it was not a book that makes me want to run out and buy more.

This is a book that has been lingering on my TBR for a while and I'm sorry that it has taken my so long to read it!

Very well written, British Bedmate handles a couple of complex situations with delicacy and humor. I truly enjoyed getting to know both Bridget and Simon. They are entertaining and well rounded personalities. The transition from awkward roommates to friends to more was sweet and I enjoyed the evolution for both.

The duo of Keeland and Ward is one that I enjoy when I get the chance to read their work. I need to do better about not letting their books linger on my To Be Read list.

QUEEN MOVE CHAIR AN TEASER
Excerpt:
“You’re fucking brilliant.”
“Huh?” Ezra asks absentmindedly, paying more attention to the flame under his pan than to my compliment. “What’d you say?”
“I said you’re brilliant.” I hold up the iPad I’m using to read his manuscript. “Your book, the YLA story, is incredible, Ez.”
“Oh. Thanks.” He flashes me a smile and then goes back to his French toast. “The key to getting this right is the milk-to-bread ratio.”
I hop off the counter and walk over to stand beside him at the stove. “Would you forget about your French toast for a minute and listen to me?”
“But it’s stuffed French toast.” He takes the pan off the burner and pulls me into his arms. “And I could listen to you all day. What were you saying? Something about me being a handsome, sexy genius?”
“Um…those weren’t my exact words.” I laugh up at him.
“I could have sworn that’s what you said, and I’m never wrong.” He slides his hands over my ass in a pair of his boxer shorts. “Some even say I’m fucking brilliant.”
“They probably just like your big dick,” I whisper and blink up at him as innocently as I can manage.
“I get that a lot.” He drops a kiss on my head and turns back to his French toast. I lean down to rest an elbow on the counter and watch him work.
“A lot?” I ask teasingly. “Have there been a lot?”
He pauses mid-toast-flip and slants me a glance. “Are you asking how many people I’ve had sex with?”
“I mean, it’s none of my business. If you don’t want to—”
“Eight.”
Eight?
Lord above, only eight?!
“Oh.” I straighten and rest my hip against the counter. “What a, um, single-digit number that is.”
“What about you?”
What about me? I’m tabulating years of hook-ups, one-night stands, fuck bois and carrying the one.
“If you don’t want to,” he says, cracking an egg into a bowl, “it’s fine. I don’t care how many people—”
“I don’t know.”
He glances up from whisking eggs, a small frown puckering his dark brows. “You don’t know what?”
“My number. I don’t know how many people I’ve been with.”
He resumes whisking, his frown clearing. “Oh.”
The whisking eggs and whirring refrigerator are the only sounds in the kitchen. I’ve never been embarrassed by my choices. I enjoy sex. I’ve had it with a lot of people. People I really liked…or tolerated…but didn’t want to commit to. I’ve always been safe and never mean about it. I was upfront, and when someone wanted more, I let them know “more” wasn’t an option.
“I just never…” I cross my arms over my stomach, fold one bare foot over the other. “I haven’t been interested in committed relationships. There hasn’t been anyone I wanted that with.”
“Tru.” He stops whisking and gives me the full impact of his undivided attention. His eyes are placid blue. No shadows or undercurrents. “I don’t care.” Ezra pushes the bowl aside and faces me. “But there is something I feel like we should be clear on regarding how you’ve handled sex in the past.”
Here we go.
“You’ve never wanted to commit before,” he says.
“Right. I’ve never wanted any strings attached.”
“I know I said we could be just sex, no emotional attachments.” He shoves his hands in his pockets. “But I feel like I have to be honest with you. Having you back in my life has been…it’s been exactly what I need, and what I felt last night… I’ve never felt that way before.”
I’m not even sure my heart is beating, but it also feels like there’s a tumult in my chest. “What are you saying, Ez?”
His mouth flattens into a hard line and his jaw hardens to stone. “I want strings.”
“Y-you do?”
“I want strings.” He links our fingers, strokes his thumb across my palm. “Ropes, if necessary. I want anything that keeps you with me and me with you and tells everyone else don’t even think about it.”
I’m stunned and incredibly turned on, but that doesn’t take much where Ezra’s concerned.
“You…you do?” I ask faintly…again.
“I wouldn’t do well sharing you.”

Whenever I am looking to be challenged by a book, especially when it comes to my view of the world and my place in it, I know which author to turn to. That would be Kennedy Ryan and in Queen Move she (once again) gives us a master piece wrapped up in two human, sometimes less than perfect people.

For loyal Ryan readers, Kimba is not a new character. But, for the sake of Queen Move we meet her and Ezra for the first time as children and follow them through friendship to the beginning of more when circumstances separate them at 13. When we see them reconnect 20+ years later, things are complicated......

And inside the complicated is where Queen Move and Ms Ryan shine. I won’t touch on all the issue addressed because each reader needs to experience the book for themselves and find their takeaways. For me, it was love finds a way and takes many different forms.

The characters in this book are dynamic, interesting, and relatable. That relatable piece made the messages that much more powerful for me. Especially as Ms Ryan challenged the bubble I find myself (often) in when it comes to the situations that real life brings to others who may look different than I do.

My one caution, don’t start Queen Move unless you have time to invest in the book. The well crafted story pulls you in and does not let go until the very end.

Wicked Secret is a good combination of The Wicked Horse series and the Jameson Force Series. August our male lead is employed by one and plays at the other!

This is a fun read that takes a look at what happens when your lost love shows up 10 years later with secrets and in desperate need of help. As much as August was raw and a bit abrasive at times, he was also had a sweet side that made me like him. I also really enjoyed Leighton’s character and found her to be very relatable.

The story line here pulls you in, and has you on your edge of your seat for various reasons. It’s a fast paced story that has enough going on that the budding romance almost sneaks up on you.

Ms Bennett’s talent as a author comes through loud and clear with Wicked Secret. Not only does she tell an engaging story about August, Leighton, and their family, but she also gracefully weaves in secondary characters and details that advance two different series so we are excited to see what comes next.
