Blurb: Coy Mason is a jerk. If there is one truth that Bellamy Davenport knows, it’s that. Hands-down. (Well, that and the fact that she didn’t mean to hurt him. Physically. Coy can’t be hurt emotionally because he doesn’t have a heart.) Coy is not just the small-town, literal boy-next-door. He’s a heartbreaking, womanizing, mischief-making (and delicious) man and was all of those things well before he became a hot-shot country music sensation. He’s a dream standing in her doorway with no shirt, messy hair, and a ‘Do you wanna?’ grin. But he’s also a nightmare for her heart and she knows it. Their enemies-to-lovers relationship always ends the same way—heavy on the enemies, light on the lovers. So why is she still standing there?   About the Author: USA Today and Washington Post bestselling author Adriana Locke lives and breathes books. After years of slightly obsessive relationships with the flawed bad boys created by other authors, Adriana has created her own. She resides in the Midwest with her husband, sons, and two dogs. She spends a large amount of time playing with her kids, drinking coffee, and cooking. You can find her outside if the weather's nice and there's always a piece of candy in her pocket.

Review Round Up ~ December 26

Coming Soon/New Releases:

Off Beat (Forgotten Flounders, #1)Off Beat by J.C. Hannigan

3.75 stars - Would Recommend

Review Copy Purchased

Off Beat is the first read in a new series by J C Hannigan, an author I've enjoyed in the past.
I was glad to meet Calum, Harper, Asher, and the cast of character surrounding them.

Off Beat is a bit of a different read in that it doesn't follow the traditional story arc. Ms Hannigan has us jump into the story at the beginning of the conflict - When Calum returns to his hometown after being away for 9 years. She does an excellent job of using flashbacks to build the history needed to have us rooting for Calum and Harper to have a much needed second chance.

It was sweet to see Calum try to work his way back into Harper's good graces, but it was almost too easy. I kept waiting for something to go wrong. One thing I missed/wanted to see a bit more of was just how Calum's career was impacting the changes in his life. We see him get put into sitiuations that could have made things more difficult for him, but he reapeatedly makes the right choice (yay Calum!), but there is a bit of a unresolved question about how his new life gets introduced to the public.

As much as this is Calum and Harper's story, it's also an opportunity to meet Calum's band mates (Dare and Evan) and family who we hopefully see more of in future books. There are several stings that could be pulled for interesting and dynamic stories that I hope we see soon.

Foreplayer (Rookie Rebels, #4)Foreplayer by Kate Meader

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Copy Provided by Author

Ms Meader has another winner with Foreplayer, the latest addition to the Rookie Rebels series. This book has a strong tie in to the original Rebels series, so long time readers will appreciate getting to see what everyone is up to.

I enjoyed getting to meet Mia and Cal. They were a bit of an unlikely pair at first, but it was fun watching them become friends and lay the foundation for more. Both have baggage and the excellent secondary cast helps them get it figured out and take the blinders off.

My one “complaint” - and that’s really too strong of a word- is that this is supposed to be a stand alone, but it relies heavily on back story created in previous books (especially the original Rebels) that may leave new readers a bit in the dark. Ms Meader does a good job of pulling in pertinent details, but there are still portions that are vague.

Overall, this is a solid, feel good read. There were definitely moments when i found myself cheering for both characters along with times when I wanted to shake sense into them. There were good lessons learned, old friends to catch up with, and even a new character to get to know. I am very curious about where the next Rookie Rebel will take us.

Amazon - Will Release December 29, 2020

Boone (Eternity Springs: The McBrides of Texas, #3)Boone by Emily March

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

Boone McBride has been a consistent secondary character in both the Eternity Springs and McBrides of Texas series - it was fun to see him finally get his own book.

We’ve known from the beginning that Boone was a deeper well than he made himself out to be, but here we learn just how deep those still waters run. It was sweet to see him take his experiences and help someone else in the form of Hannah Dupree.

This book is a vehicle for catching us up on where a few of the previous main couples are now, but it was done in a way that was organic to Boone and Hannah’s story. As with all Eternity Springs books, there is an overall message of hope and healing. Some of the hard work is glossed over, but it worked for the message here.

From the references to Boone’s sisters and a couple of other secondary characters mentioned, I don’t think we are done with Eternity Springs or Enchanted Canyon. I am looking forward to seeing where we may be going next.

Do you believe in fate? What about Karma?
Tia Louise gives us a dose of both when we meet JR and Hope and they are both at a bit of a cross roads in life.

I enjoyed getting to know these characters and seeing how they both dealt with struggles created by the actions of others or the world situation. JR, Hope (along with His brother Scout) used their adventures to peel back layers and show who they are at the core, no matter what first impression they made.

This Much is True is the first book I’ve read set in a post Covid world. It took me a second to adjust to the “quiet” of the world and masks being normal. Ms Louise does an excellent job of blending the new reality into the actions of the characters and some of the events they encounter.

We were given a tiny tease of what might be coming for Scout and I am curious to see what is in store for him!

The Relationship Pact ~ Adriana Locke ~ New Release & Review

THE RELATIONSHIP PACT by Adriana Locke

AVAILABLE NOW!! FREE in Kindle Unlimited!
Amazon AU: https://amzn.to/3fkga3q
Blurb: How hard can it be? That was the question rolling around Larissa Mason’s mind just before she asked Hollis Hudson to be her fake boyfriend. It was only supposed to be for five minutes, after all. Granted, that was also before she felt his hand on the small of her back as he charmed the heck out of her family. She hadn’t heard his laugh yet either. And it was definitely before she saw the football god shirtless. Otherwise, she would’ve had an idea of just how hard some things could be. It turns out that pretending to be in love with a crazily handsome, somewhat enigmatic, and absolutely unforgettable tight end (that has an amazing tight end) is easy. Reminding herself that just because opposites attract doesn’t mean they’re forever is much harder. What they have isn’t love—it’s a relationship pact. Right?

The Relationship Pact wraps up the Kings of football set written by three different authors- and let me just say that they all rocked it! Each book is a little different, but the men at the center of each story have their own stories to tell, so it works.

Ms Locke gets to tell us Hollis’ story. We’ve seen him in the prior two books briefly, but not enough to get to know him well. After meeting him here, I just wanted to give him a huge hug. He is paired with Larissa and she was fun to get to know too. I really liked these two together and found myself rooting for them to get things figured out when the sparks started flying.

Much like the other two books, there are things happening here that tug on the heart strings. These are balanced with some really fun things, but as I read this book, I felt like I was curled up and visiting with a friend.

If you have read Ms Locke before, you will enjoy some of the cameos that show up. It makes me hopeful that maybe, just maybe Hollis and Larissa will show up some where else?

Layla ~ Colleen Hoover ~ Blog Tour

Colleen Hoover Introduces a Scene from her New Paranormal Romance Layla!

This month bestselling author Colleen Hoover released her very first paranormal romance, Layla. Today Colleen shares one of her very favorite parts of the book and introduces the scene. Colleen, take it away!

“Leeds and Layla have just met about an hour before this scene takes place. I wouldn’t say they experienced insta-love, but it was definitely an immediate attraction. Leeds is lonely and withdrawn from life, while Layla is the opposite. She’s over the top and fun and everything Leeds isn’t. He’s a musician who has never released any of his own music due to insecurities and doubt. But Layla lights a fire in him and uncovers the confidence about his music that he keeps buried.”

Excerpt from Layla by Colleen Hoover

Layla leans in and I expect her to kiss me, but instead she whispers, “Play me something,” against my mouth. Then she moves to the couch and lies down. “Play something worthy of that piano,” she says.

She crosses her legs at her ankles and lets one of her arms dangle off the couch. She runs her finger against the hardwood floor while she waits for me to start playing, but I can’t stop staring at her. I’m not sure there’s another woman on this planet who could make me want to stare at her without blinking until my eyes dry up, but she’s looking at me expectantly.

“What if you don’t like my music?” I ask. “Will you still let me kiss you?”

She smiles gently. “Does the song mean something to you?”

“I wrote it using pieces of my soul.”

“Then you have nothing to worry about,” she says quietly.

I spin around on the bench and place my fingers on the keys. I hesitate for a moment before playing the song. I’ve never performed it for anyone before. The only person I’ve ever wanted to sing it for is my father, and he’s no longer alive. His death is the reason I wrote this in the first place.

I’ve never been nervous while playing Garrett’s songs onstage, but this feels different. This is personal, and despite the fact that there’s only one person in the audience right now, it feels like the most intense audience I’ve ever performed for.

I fill my lungs with air and slowly release it as I begin to play.

That night I stopped believing in heaven

I can’t believe in a god that cruel

Can you?

That night I stopped praying on my knees

But I don’t pray standing either

Do you?

That night I closed the door and closed the

window

I’ve been sitting in the dark

Are you?

That night I learned happiness is a fairy tale

A thousand pages read aloud

By you

That night I stopped believing in God

You were ours, he didn’t care, he

Took you

So that night I stopped . . .

I stopped . . .

I just

Stopped.

That night I stopped.

I stopped.

I just stopped.

That night I stopped.

I . . .

When I’m finished playing the song, I fold my hands in my lap. I’m a little hesitant to turn around and look at her. The whole room got quiet after I played the last note. So quiet—it feels like all the sound was sucked out of the house. I can’t even hear her breathing.

I close the cover to the piano and then slowly spin around on the bench. She’s wiping her eyes, staring up at the ceiling.

“Wow,” she whispers. “I wasn’t expecting that. I feel like you just stomped on my chest.”

That’s how I’ve felt since I first laid eyes on her tonight.

“I like how it ends,” she says. She sits up on the couch and tucks her legs beneath her. “You just stop in the middle of the sentence. It’s so perfect. So powerful.”

I wasn’t sure if she’d realize the intentional ending, but the fact that she does makes me all the more enamored of her.

LaylaElizabeth's Review

My rating: 5 of 5 stars - One of the Best

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

Colleen Hoover is an author who has been on my TBR list forever. I’ve been interested in reading her work, just never quiet got there - when the opportunity to read Layla came up, I jumped on it. BEST DECISION EVER!

Layla is one of those books where I wish “trust me, read the book” worked as a review. I’m not even sure where to start in telling why you should read this story, but you need to! I don’t want to risk spoilers, so I will touch on just a couple of things.

Leeds and Layla - our main characters. There were times when I didn’t necessarily like these two, but I was captivated by them. Our story is told from Leeds’ point of view and it was interesting to see the devolution of their situation and how he chose to handle things.

Storyline- this is unique and something that I haven’t seen before. I was pulled in and intrigued by what Leeds was experiencing. Before I knew it, I didn’t want to put the kindle down and I ended up reading the whole book in an afternoon/evening.

The twist/resolution- this came out of no where (as it should) and it made a lot of the angsty frustration earlier in the story worth it. I was kept on my toes up until the very last minute.

When I reached the end of Layla, I was pleased with how things worked out, but I wasn’t 100% ready to let Leeds and Layla go. Part of me wants to know where they are 5, 10, 20 years down the road. Those Colleen Hoover books on the TBR.... well, they will be moving up the list. I need to see if they are as good as Layla!
