Cannon ~ Sawyer Bennett ~New Release & Review

Cannon: A Pittsburgh Titans Novel Sawyer Bennett Release Date: February 28, 2023

Synopsis:

Cannon West left his hockey playing days behind to care for his dying wife but has since found success on the other side of the bench. Now, as the youngest head coach in league history, he’s hoping to lead the Pittsburgh Titans to a winning season. The last thing he’s looking for is a relationship, but life sometimes takes us in another direction. The Pittsburgh Titans are still working to move on from the tragic plane crash that forever changed the landscape of their organization. Having lost my wife, I know all about grief and the guilt of survival which makes me uniquely equipped to take this team to the next level. From the very first time I stepped inside the Titans’ arena, I knew I was exactly where I needed to be. New to town, I’m still establishing my routine, but I have the most important aspect under control—the coffee shop where I stop on my way to the arena every morning. A strong cup of java and the gorgeous manager who I can’t help but chat up is quickly becoming my favorite way to start the day. But no matter how much I enjoy the blush that stains Ava Cavanaugh’s cheeks with my admittedly awkward attempt at flirting, I know it will never be more than brazen banter with a new friend. My job consumes almost all my time, and I know firsthand what that level of commitment can do to a relationship. That doesn’t mean I’m not open to some fun. My career comes first, but Ava understands my boundaries. The only problem is that once I give into her temptation, the rules I set for myself become blurred, and my mixed signals hurt Ava—the one thing I promised I wouldn’t do. I’ve put myself in what seems to be an untenable situation, but I’ve faced those before. Now I need to find the strength to move past my fears, or risk losing my second chance at love with the woman who has stolen my heart.

I am so glad that we are back with the Pittsburgh Titans! This time we are meeting new characters Cannon and Ava. Head Coach Cannon was introduced in book 5, Drake, but we really get to know him here.

The world around these characters is so much fun. The Titans team organization seems like a family and it's easy to get invested in all of them, both main and secondary characters. Cannon comes to us with emotional baggage and the firm believe that he isn't cut out for a relationship. Ava is more open, but has her own wounds too. These two were slightly unlikely, but great together. An adorable meet cute lead to a wonderful story of two people connecting and growing.

Cannon is a fairly low angst level and the feel good aspect was just want I needed! For readers that have been following the Titans, you will be thrilled at the various previous main characters that show up. We also continue to get to know more of the Titans and I hope to see more of them soon!

Lucy Score is a newer to me author and after reading Things We Hide From the Light I can’t figure out why I haven’t read her before!

The story takes place in Knockemout - a small town not far outside the DC metro area. This is clearly a story that falls into a series as the previous book is frequently referenced. This works as a standalone as the needed references to the prior work are well explained.

Our lead characters are Sheriff Nash Morgan and insurance investigator, Lina. This interesting couple, with a 747 worth of baggage between them could set a forest on fire with the sparks between them! They are surrounded by an excellent and interesting secondary cast. All of this plus an intriguing story line pulled me in and wouldn’t let go.

I truly enjoyed getting to know the town of Knockemout and am curious to go back and read the story of Nash’s brother, Knox. I will also be on bated breath waiting to see if we come back to town!

Damaged, but healing describes our main characters Jodi and Hunter. Both were likeable and I found myself
rooting for them to have a happy ending, but I had a little bit of a hard time becoming invested in both of them.

I can’t quiet out my finger on what it was that kept me from falling into the story, but it consistently felt like I was looking at the characters and story through glass.

This is a classic Foster book with an alpha leading man and strong leading lady who find themselves in a bit of trouble. Previous leading characters make an appearance in secondary roles, but not knowing them will not distract from this stand alone story.

I would say this book did its job, with good characters and intrigue based plot line. There is also teasing about future roles for a few new secondary characters.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars - One of the Best

R C Boldt is one of my go to authors, especially for reads with a strong suspense element or an unexpected twist. A Stop In Time fits both of those molds perfectly.

This story follows Mac, a unique female lead with baggage and cinder block walls keeping her separate from those around her. Our male lead is Daniel, an atypical leading man with his own particular moral code. Loyal Boldt readers will recognize Daniel as a previous secondary character.

The challenge with books like A Stop In Time is that I really want to tell you that you should read it, but I don’t want to risk giving anything away. To that end, I am going to tell you that Ms Boldt did a fantastic job of pulling me into Mac’s world. I was intrigued and fascinated by the issues swirling around her. The connection between Mac and Daniel was sweet, especially given the issues both of them faced before they met and during the time they spent together.

A small secondary cast helped nudge the story along. There are two particular secondary characters that I would like to know more about, but I’m not going to say who - mainly because I don’t want to spoil surprises. This is an imaginative and well written read. I am definitely looking forward to more from Ms Boldt!

You Can't Kiss The Nanny Brady Banks ~ Piper Rayne ~ New Release & Review

You Can't Kiss the Nanny, Brady Banks by Piper Rayne is now live!

Brady Banks.

The Kingsmen’s best wide receiver.

Rich AF.

Hot as hell.

A stallion in the sack.

How do I know that last fact? I may have shared a one-night stand with him six months ago when I was rebounding from a broken heart.

I didn’t forget him, but I was done with him, until I discovered he’s the single dad of the boy I’ve been hired to nanny.

It’s near impossible to ignore my attraction to him now that we’re living under the same roof—but I have no choice.

First, this job pays well, and I need the money to move out of my parents’ spare room.

Second, he’s a public figure and there’s no room for me to get caught up in a scandal with him—I can’t disappoint my parents again.

Third, men like Brady were built to break hearts. I barely managed to piece mine back together after my failed engagement and Brady would do irreparable damage if I gave him the chance.

Let the longest three months of my life begin…

This was fun second installment of the Kingsmen football series!
We’ve met Brady Banks before - when he was the playboy friend in Lee Burrows book. In You Can’t Kiss the Nanny, it was nice to get to know more about who Brady really is and to see him in the role of Dad as well as flirt.

He is paired with Violet and she was an easy character to like and root for. She comes to the equation with her own baggage that colors how she sees situations and influences her reactions.

These two together were awesome, especially when combined with Brady’s scene stealer of a son, Theo. The set up that brought Brady and Violet together was interesting and I found myself waiting for things to blow up in their faces. When things did fall apart, it wasn’t in the direction I expected and that the resolution even more fun.

Since this is part of a series surrounding a football team, the secondary cast is larger. At this point, it is still easy to keep track of everyone and there are a few teasers for what’s coming next!

The Stolen Twins ~ Shari J Ryan ~ New Release & Review

THE STOLEN TWINS

by Shari J. Ryan

Release Blitz

Release Date: February 14, 2023

Genre: Historical fiction
Trope: World War II

Synopsis

Auschwitz, 1944: “You can’t leave me,” I whisper, my hand trembling as I reach for her cheek. “You can’t. We’re in this life together, always, just you and me.” This utterly heartbreaking yet beautifully hopeful World War Two page-turner tells the story of identical twin sisters in Auschwitz. Born minutes apart, Arina and Nora have never left each other’s side—until now…

The cattle car is dark, except for the light filtering through the boarded windows. There are too many of us to count, crushed up against each other. The air is stuffy, carrying the scent of our terror—none of us know what awaits us when this train stops. I cling onto Mama’s hand and Nora, my twin sister, clutches Papa’s.

After what feels like forever, the train stops. We spill out of the carriage, the sun blinding us after being imprisoned in darkness for so long. There are people everywhere, soldiers separating children from their parents, husbands from wives.

We’re in some sort of queue, and a man in a dark-green SS uniform walks by, glancing at everyone he passes. “Twins, twins,” he shouts. My heart falls into the pit of my stomach.

“Right here,” says Mama, hesitation in her voice. “My daughters are twins.” My eyes widen, and Nora trembles. Papa tries to tell Mama to be quiet, but it’s too late.

The Nazi catches sight of us. “Twins,” he says again, pausing to inspect Nora and me. “Yes, you are, aren’t you? You two are going to come along with me.”

This unforgettable World War Two page-turner, perfect for fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Lucky Ones and The Midwife of Auschwitz, shows that, in the darkest of times, love can save your life…

In the Stolen Twins, Ms Ryan again shows her knack for taking difficult subjects and making them real for modern day audiences.

This story focuses on twins, Nora and Ariana, as they navigate life in at the end of World War II, and in the immediate aftermath.

Miss Ryan does not avoid the harsh realities of what the Nazis did in the concentration camps. But she presents this material with grace and empathy for what these survivors would have gone through.

As a reader, I couldn’t help but root for Nora, Ariana and the people trying to help them. I was inspired by their courage, encouraged that there were people in the world to help, but also disappointed in the ignorance present, and the struggles that could create for survivors.

Books like this, while fiction, are important in our current cultural lexicon as they make it impossible for us to forget the tragedies of our past. Hopefully by remembering what has happened before we can make sure it never happens again.

In Promise Me Always, we return to Redemption Hills with two characters that have been in the background of the Lawson brother’s adventures. Those that have followed the series will know Tessa fairly well, but Milo has been there too.

As with other books in the series, Ms Jackson pulls us in as the story unfolds. Milo is what I consider a typical Jackson hero in the he’s a bit tortured, but he’s a better guy than he thinks he is. It was heart tugging to watch him interact with his children and I loved watching Milo and Tessa find out that friendship can be so much more.

With a strong message of healing and redemption and a nice dose of intrigue this was a great way to wrap (?) up the Redemption Hills series.

3.5 Stars for a cute, fun “not quiet enemies” to lovers story.
I liked Max and Charlie and truly enjoyed getting to know the characters behind the facades they initially portrayed. It was fun to watch them butt heads and eventually figure out what they needed.
Well written and entertaining this is a good start to a new series from the reliable Ms Meader. The cast, both primary and secondary, is well rounded and funny. I am looking forward to seeing more of them in future books.
One thing that I was very impressed by was Ms Meader’s ability to world build and introduce us to future players without taking away from Max and Charlie. Definitely a fun read!

Last First Kiss is a series started by (new to me) author Stella Holt. It is a second chance story on multiple levels and I feel like the set up that was fantastic, but…. This book has a case of “the hurry up and finish alreadys”

Charlotte is a young police widow in a large family where everyone is in the military or on the police force. We spend a lot of time getting to know her and get a strong dose of her brothers in secondary roles.
We see her struggle with grief and the idea of moving on - this was actually one of my favorite parts of this book- the idea of Charlotte giving herself grace to embrace ACT II.

Caleb is a coworker of Charlotte’s that comes back into the picture five years after she first met him. The once upon a time attraction returns, but he has baggage of his own.

We spend a lot of Last Fist Kiss with Charlotte and Caleb figuring things out. That story line is interesting and I was rooting for them. Where I found myself a bit frustrated is that we spent 80% of the book in a 3 month window (Columbus day to New Years) and then boom it’s Columbus Day again and we find out the conclusion to the journey. I wish this had been edited a little differently. I don’t think we needed to see the whole hard slog that was revealed near the end, but I think glimpses would have been helpful to really embracing this pair.

Ms Holt is a new to me author and I have to admit this book does make me curious about Charlotte’s brothers, but I might be a bit weary too…

Sinful Crown is a stand alone read in Ms Harrison world of mafia/drug lord leading men. Gideon is a character that we’ve seen before, but this is our opportunity to get to know him.
His leading lady, Sasha, is about 10 years younger and their initial connection is not exactly her choice.

This is a darker book, Gideon is not what you would call a “good” guy, but it was revealing to see his evolution as he spent time with Sasha. Told in dual POV, Ms Harrison crafted a compelling story that pulled me in as both characters grew and changed in their time together.

I found myself liking and rooting for both Gideon and Sasha. I appreciated that she was a strong lead who didn’t accept her situation at face value and tried to protect herself even when it was difficult.

As a character driven story, the secondary cast is fairly small. The people we do see are there strictly to help move things along. There are several of Ms Harrison’s previous leading him who appear briefly, but knowing their stories isn’t necessary to enjoying this one.

Ms Rose has done it again! She delivered an emotional and entertaining second chance story full of characters that you can’t help but like and root for!

Kristina is a secondary character that we’ve met before and it was nice to see her on the other side of the upheaval she had going on. I loved her initial interactions with Leo and the organic way a vacation connection turned toward more.

The emotional journeys of both characters (Kristina and Leo) were treated with respect and honesty. I appreciated how their respective pasts played a part in their story, but they both seemed to learn from previous mistakes. Add in a terrific secondary cast and this was a standalone read I couldn’t put down.

3.25 stars - Slightly Above Average

I enjoyed Breaking All The Rules and I even found myself relating to Bea, the female lead, to some extent, but this was a book that I just couldn’t quiet love.

We meet Bea when she moves to Credence at a cross roads. Her first interactions with Austin are truly funny. I appreciated how he was willing to meet her where she was and how their friendship turned into more slowly.

Both Bea and Austin are likeable characters, but I was a bit bothered by how she never opened up for him about who she really was. This made the emotional announcements on both there parts feel like a stretch for me.

Overall this was an entertaining book and I enjoyed meeting these characters and the town of Credence, but I would have liked a bit more in terms of Bea’s emotional growth.
