Pieces of Us ~ A L Jackson ~ Cover Reveal

Pieces of Us

A stand-alone second-chance romance in A.L. Jackson's Confessions of the Heart Series...

Coming April 22nd

Cover: RBA Designs
Photo: Michelle Lancaster Photography
Model: Josh Elton
SERIES: A Confessions of the Heart Stand-Alone Novel

Maxon Chambers has a way of stealing all the attention.
All my affection, and all my dreams.
What I needed to remember was he’d stolen my good judgment and my virginity, too.
When he broke up with me, I ran across the country and swore I’d never return to Broadshire Rim.
But here I am, thirteen years later.
Maxon is all grown up.
Sexier than sin and more tempting than ever.
A detective on the Charleston force, he lives on the outside of safety, devoted to protecting the people of his city.
But with the way he’s looking at me now? I’m pretty sure what needs protecting is my heart.
Can we mend the pieces of us? Or will he leave my heart shattered forever . . .

A smirk pulled at the corner of Maxon’s mouth where he had me backed against the wall. “You act like I have some other place to be.”
Redness flushed. “Don’t act like you don’t have plenty of people to entertain you.” I hoped it didn’t sound like bitterness, like scorn, but it was hard to keep that from quivering in my voice.
He moved even closer and planted his hands over my head. So close I could feel need oozing from his skin, his breath on my face, blueberries and ice. “There’s no one else, Izzy. No one I want. No one I can’t breathe without. It’s always been you.”
Desire pulled at my stomach, knottin’ it up tight. I pressed my thighs together, and he caught it, scenting my need.
Hot air puffed out of his nostrils like the dragon he was, and I was shivering. Shaking like a leaf.
He moved his hand, slowly, watching me carefully as he dropped it down and placed it on my bare thigh.
Right up under the skirt of my dress.
The breath left me on a staggered gasp. Tingles flashed. Flames licking and lapping.
My body begged to come alive under his touch.
“Izzy, baby,” he murmured, and oh God, I sagged, my back pressed to the wall. Hooked. Knowing how fast this man could make me fall.
Those eyes pinned me, keeping me in place, while his hand squeezed my leg.
He edged down, nose brushing mine, a soft inhale between his lips.
Breathing me in.
Then he pressed his mouth to mine. Featherlight.
Didn’t matter how soft it was.
Lightning streaked. A crack of thunder in the air.
He pressed our mouths tighter, lips closed, just this persistent pressure that felt so right.
A promise.
An apology.
Sensation rushed through my body.
This old love trying to bust free.
To climb out.
Reach for him.
Because I’d wanted it. Wanted to be with him so badly.
I whimpered.
“Izzy,” he murmured at my lips.
“Maxon,” I whispered back.
That was it.
We lit.

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

When much loved authors try something new, it’s exciting and a little scary too. Tumble starts a new small town series, Dogwood Lane, by Ms Locke and she definitely delivered.

Dane and Neely were high school sweethearts who had things implode on them, leading to 10 years apart until she finally comes home. I found myself liking both characters and rooting for them to get closure and find their happily ever afters.

Dane, his brother, and friend fit the Locke hero mood perfectly. That is to say that they are not perfect at all, but that they have a sense of honor and have a wonderful sense of humor that makes you want to get to know them better.

Neely is a unique and strong heroine. I loved that she let herself lash out at Dane and put the hurt out on a platter, but then felt the need to apologize. I also could relate to how her priorities changed, I think the struggle she went through is something a lot of people deal with as they mature.

This is an overall fun book. There is history and some angst, but it’s not too heavy. There is also a good balance between world building, plot, and character development. I am looking forward to more from Dogwood Lane.

Guest Post: Spend a Morning with Dane Madden, The Hero of TUMBLE

Guest Post: Spend a Morning with Dane Madden, The Hero of TUMBLE

I looked in the mirror this morning to shave. As I lifted the razor to my cheek, I saw a little scar that sits just to the side of my right eye. It’s not something most people would ever notice. Hell, I don’t notice it every day. But the light caught it just right and suddenly it was all I could see.

I’m Dane Madden, the carpenter, not Dane Madden the philosopher, so why I stood there for a good five minutes remembering the night I got that scar is beyond me. But I did. I thought about how the barbed wire caught my skin and ripped the flesh and how Neely Kimber’s face filled with so much concern I was kind of glad I was bleeding.

She and I were inseparable back then. From the moment she opened the door and our eyes locked, there was a bond between us that grew stronger. We went from finding ways to bump into each other, to hanging out with a group of friends, to dating in the sincerest way. She wasn’t just a girl. Neely wasn’t a pretty face I wanted on my arm, or in my bed as things evolved, like many of the guys I knew back then labeled their girlfriends. She was more than that to me—my best friend. My confidant when things with Dad went sour. My trusty right hand that bailed my ass out of more trouble than I was worth.

The night my eye was cut, she remembered to go back and get my hat so it wouldn’t be found the next day. Had she not done picked up the evidence, the farmer whose cows my friends and I had been trying to tip (terrible idea, if you’re wondering) would’ve been able to track the mess in his field to me and my friends. Dogwood Lane is a small town. Word gets around easy enough without trying.

Then there was the night my brother Matt, our friend Penn, and I went corning around Halloween. That’s another terrible idea, if you’re wondering, and involves throwing shucked corn at cars passing by. Let’s just say a certain driver in an oversized pick-up truck didn’t appreciate the sentiment. After being chased on foot to the outskirts of town, we had to hide in a chicken coop until Neely could come get us.

Despite my antics, she was there. She might’ve laughed at me or pointed out how stupid we were, but she took my worst right along with my best.

Our lives were entwined by shenanigans, stories, and so much love. Damn, I loved her. I didn’t know where she stopped and I started. I didn’t want to know. She was the best thing in my life. She made me better. And that was the ruination of us because I couldn’t bear to think I would make her life worse.

Seeing her again after all these years lit a fire inside me that I didn’t think was possible. I haven’t felt this burn since the day I walked off her porch having broken her heart. I want to talk to her, touch her, hold her and I can’t do any of it. Even though so much of our lives were built together, our memories from the easiest time of our lives shared, we aren’t those people anymore.

 And it’s all my fault.

*** Tumble Excerpt

Splat! The sound of the hammer crushing my thumb—swung with more force than was necessary, to boot—ricochets across the front lawn. The tool falls from my hand, striking against the sawhorse, and flips into the soft grass with a gentle thud. “Son of a...!” My hand shakes, the top of my thumb threatening to explode. I tilt my head to the sky and try to find some peace in the clouds. I come up empty. “Matt!” I call to my younger brother. “I’m taking ten.” He nods from halfway up the ladder leaned against the side of the house. Wrapping my good hand around my thumb, I head toward my truck. Sounds of construction ring out behind me. It’s usually music to my ears, the lifeblood of the Madden name. But each cut of a sawblade, buzz of a power drill, and swing of a hammer feels like a distraction this morning. I have a throbbing thumb to show for it. Beads of sweat cluster along my forehead. I remove my hat with my good hand and run the back of my forearm along my brow. “Damn it.” Everything feels sticky. Mildly irritating. And the progress on the project that usually energizes me has failed me epically this morning. I just don’t want to be here. Not that I have a better place to be. Quite frankly, I have a lot of places I shouldn’t be, and with Neely, or thinking about Neely, is one of them. I would’ve recognized her anywhere. Same gray eyes that glimmer like she’s about to tell you a secret. Full lips that spread into a smile so infectious you can’t help but feel your own mouth following suit. The hint of floral perfume, the golden hair that may as well be silk, and the aura about her that’s just as strong as the day she left Dogwood Lane and me—it’s all the same. It’s like time forgot to age her. She somehow has become more beautiful, sexier, stronger. The world hates me. I’ve postulated this for a long time, but it’s obvious today. The tailgate of my truck lowers. Scooping a handful of ice from the cooler in the bed into a bandanna, I wrap it around my injured digit. The relief lasts only a few moments. “What are you doing down here?” Penn rests his forearms over the side of the truck, the tattoos carved in his skin like mini masterpieces on full display. He eyes my makeshift bandage. “What happened to you?” “Hammer,” I groan, adjusting the ice. “That’s interesting.” “How you figure?” “Never knew you to hit yourself with a hammer before. I find that interesting.” “If that’s interesting, you need a hobby. Or you could work like I’m paying you to do . . .” “I have a hobby, thank you, and you should’ve seen her last night,” he says, smacking his lips together. “Lord Almighty, she’s a—” “Penn.” “Yeah?” The tip of my finger sticks out of the bandanna. It’s bright red and hot to the touch despite the ice packed around it. “All your escapades really sound the same at this point.” “Is that jealousy I hear?” He cups his hand to his ear. “I thought so. Not my fault you’re in a dry spell.” Leaning against the truck, I look at him. “Jealousy isn’t how I’d describe it. But if that makes ya feel good, go for it.” “My hobby makes me feel good.” He moves his lips around, like he’s fighting the next words trying to pop out. He does this when he knows he shouldn’t say something but can’t quite convince himself not to. “From the looks of you, I’d say you’re more than jealous. I’d say you’re . . . tempted.” My tongue presses on the roof of my mouth. “Tempted to what?” He leans against the truck, too, the gold St. Christopher’s medal he’s worn since elementary school clamoring against the side. The corners of his lips nearly touch the corners of his eyes. He knows. “Word travels fast, huh?” I say, prodding around to see if my guess is right. He slow blinks. Twice. “What?” I ask. “That’s all you have to say about Neely being back in town? ‘Word travels fast.’ What’s wrong with you?” We don’t have time for that conversation. I sigh. “What do you want me to say?” “I’d love to have been a fly on the wall for that little run-in.” Penn snickers. “Did you stutter around like I imagine? Or did you not manage to say an entire sentence?” Working my jaw back and forth, I point a finger his way. “You better stop while you’re ahead.” He reads me correctly, and his animation drops a notch. “Really, though. How’d it go? But before you answer that, let me toss out there that I heard sparks were flying all over the diner so hot Claire had to call the fire department.” I shake my head. “Shut up.” “Just telling you what I heard.” “The firemen were there to order food, you idiot.” He thinks he’s onto something. There’s a glee in his face that means only one thing: it’s going to be a long day around here. “So, what happened?” he asks, resting his arms over the truck bed. “You know, sometimes I think you should’ve been a girl with all the gossiping you do.” “This isn’t gossip,” he contends. “This is Neely-freaking-Kimber, man. Every memory I have of my entire adolescence has her in it. She bailed me out of jail when I was too scared to call my dad and you and Matt were passed out on moonshine. Remember that?” My chuckle is so hard, it causes my thumb to throb. “I forgot about that. She was pissed.” “Neely came through, though. God, I miss her.” Those last words echo through my mind. I have shoved her out of my head for the last few years. Took over Dad’s business, took care of my business. Trudged forward without her because that was the only choice I had. I hardly even think about her anymore unless someone brings her up in conversation. So why do I itch to crawl into the truck and hunt her down?

But Sofia has a couple of life lessons of her own to teach. Like how to fall in love.

In this Lark Cove installment, we get to spend time with Sofia and Dakota - both characters we have met previously, but don't know well. I have to admit to being a little skeptical that Sophia would be a character I could embrace after seeing her behavior in Logan and Thea's book, Tattered.

Ms Perry did an excellent job of creating a situation where not only was I able to embrace Sofia, but I was able to respect her and root for her too. Dakota was more of a mystery character as previous glimpses of him were just that and this was our first time to really get to know him.

Tinsel, as with all of the Lark Cove books, had an element of an emotional issue that needed to be addressed, but this one didn't feel as weighty as some of the others. The issues definitely had a feeeling of "They just need to get out of their own way" versus hefty emotional scars.

Both Sofia and Dakota were characters that are easy to like. I appreciated the emotional maturing process that brought Sophia into Dakota's orbit in the first place and how she took some of what she learned while staying with him to complete the process. With both Dakota and Sofia, I felt like some of their family-centric issues were almost brushed away and not fully dealt with. While we saw the relationships struggle and start to improve, I wasn't sure there was ever a true clear resolution to the wounds both suffered. I felt this most strongly for Dakota and his relationship with his mother and sisters.

Tinsel is a book that I enjoyed reading and while it is technically a stand alone, the continuity of the series is evident. These books are meant to be read in order. I am curious to see what happens for the last Kendrick sibling as well as the town of Lark Cove in the future.

Misadventures of a Curvy Girl ~ Sierra Simone ~ New Release and Review

Misadventures of a Curvy Girl
by Sierra Simone
Release Date: 19th February 2019
For the first time in her life, Ireland Mills is happy with her body. No more fad diets, no more hiding from every camera in the room, no more low self-esteem. She’d rather be alone than with someone who’ll only love her if she’s skinny.
Caleb Carpenter and Ben Weber are everything Ireland and the Kansas Chamber of Commerce dreamed of when conceptualizing the “Real Kansas” promotional campaign. They’re handsome, young, educated, and totally dedicated to their small prairie town.
When Ireland’s Prius gets stuck on a Kansas dirt road and a massive storm rips through town, she’s left stranded with nowhere to turn but to Caleb and Ben. These two hunky country boys are impossible to ignore, but could they ever be interested in her as well?
Caleb and Ben are more than interested…and they’re willing to share. After their first night together, they know this has to be more than a one-time thing. They need to make her theirs forever. But can they convince Ireland they love her, curves and all?
Misadventures is a romantic series of spicy standalone novels, each written or co-written by some of the best names in romance. The stories are scandalous, refreshing, and, of course, incredibly sexy. They’re the perfect bedside read, a ‘quick blush’ for the reader who loves a page-turning romance.
Meet the Author
Sierra is a voracious reader of all things including the smuttiest smut, young adult, piles of non-fiction for research, and everything Bill Bryson (especially on audio).
She loves writing the dirtiest things that she can think of, King Arthur, sparkling water, Tarot, coffee, leggings, and learning new words daily.
Her previous jobs have included firing ceramics, teaching living history lessons in a one-room schoolhouse in full, 1908-approved school marm attire, and working as a librarian for several years—not in that order
She lives in the Kansas City area with her hot cop husband, two children, and two giant dogs. (And two cats, but they're so naughty we don't talk about them.)
The social media she cares about the most are Spotify and (her very very NSFW) Tumblr. Following her in those places is a true love language, indeed.

I loved the messages here, but wasn’t enthralled with the books itself.
Ireland is a young woman throwing herself into a new self image after realizing she’s been sabotaging herself by listening to others when she meets Caleb and Ben, who has his own struggles.
The message here, that love and taking care of your loved ones is what truly matters resonated with me. Unfortunately, I felt like the execution of the story was a little flat. I would have liked to see more character development and a more developed plot.
This was an entertaining read, but one I would encourage a reader to pick up on sale.

Review Catch Up....... TBR Style

I took a quick break from reading advanced copies to read a couple of books from the TBR pile..... A Love Letter to Whiskey has been lingering for YEARS and after meeting Ms Steiner this past fall at Wild N Windy in the City, I wanted to read it even more.... keep going to see what I thought.

A Love Letter to WhiskeyA Love Letter to Whiskey by Kandi Steiner

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's time

This is a book that has been on my TBR for years (literally, I bought in on sale in 2016) and for one reason or another I hadn’t gotten around to reading it until now. This was also my first read by this author, so I went in a little blind.
To be honest - I had mixed feelings while reading the book and almost quit several times. Now that I’ve finished I’m glad I did. I still have some mixed feelings, but I think those are related to execution vs the story itself.
A Love Letter to Whiskey is told from the point of Breks (B) and we follow her from the time she meets Jamie at 17 until she is roughly 28. Looking at the surface of the story and the push pull between B and Jamie was where a lot of my frustration lied, I found myself frustrated at how many times they kept circling each other.
Looking deeper I was intrigued by the fact that B’s view of love was tainted by what she had seen around her and that so much of her perception of her relationship with Jamie focused on the negative. Seeing the complete story (with some help from her friend Jenna) helped B resolve her issues and seek her true happily ever after. It highlighted how the filters we use to look at life can impact our reality - you’ll have to read the book to see what I mean.
As much as I appreciated the resolution to the story, the overwhelming desire to shake both B and Jamie to have them to get out of their own way means that is probably isn’t a book I could ever love. I would have been interested in seeing the story from Jamie’s point of view as well and am definitely curious about other books from this author.

Backstage Pass (The Back-Up Series)Backstage Pass by A.M. Madden

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

M’kay - this little bit of a story needs a major warning.
The story that is actually here is less than 1/3 of the kindle file. The rest is preview for the first book in the related series.
This is really just a scene of sexy time with friend time after. We never even learn The name of Trey’s love interest.
This is something that should only be read by someone following the series.

I don’t have time to fall in love—I’m too busy trying to run a business, keep the red socks out of the white laundry, and get the damn pillowcases on without owing a dollar to the swear jar. Sure, Frannie Sawyer is beautiful and sweet, but she’s twenty-seven, the boss’s daughter, and my new part-time nanny—which means she’s completely off-limits. It’s bad enough I can’t stop fantasizing about her, what kind of jerk would I be if I acted on the impulse to kiss her? (Exactly the kind of jerk you’re thinking.) Actually, I’m worse than that—because I didn’t stop with a kiss, and now I can’t stay away. She makes me feel like myself again. She reminds me what it’s like to want something just for me. She’s everything I ever needed, but nothing I ever imagined. I’m a former Marine. I should have had the strength to resist her from the start. But I didn’t. And now I have to choose between the life I want and the life she deserves. Even if it means giving her up.

Lessons from a One Night Stand ~ Piper Rayne ~ New Release and Review

If you find yourself having banged your new boss—the principal—in the back of your Jeep one drunken night, here’s a few takeaways based on my experience...
Lesson One: Always get her FULL name.
Lesson Two: Consider asking what she does for a living.
Lesson Three: Find out why she’s moved to town. Get details. Details are crucial.
Lesson Four: Don’t alter her bio in front of an auditorium of high school students unless you know she has a sense of humor for that sort of thing.
Lesson Five: If you ignore Lesson Four, apologize instead of flirt when you’re sent to the principal’s office.
Lesson Six: NEVER sleep with her again.
Lesson Seven: Pay attention to this one—it’s the most important of them all.
Don’t fall for your one-night stand.
Class dismissed.

This is a super fun introduction to a new series from the duo behind Piper Rayne!

The series focuses on the Bailey family of Lake Starlight, Alaska. This book features the oldest sibling, Austin.

Austin is a character that is very easy to like. His back story is dynamic and adds to the likeability factor. Adding in his siblings makes him even more fun. His love interest, Holly, is another entertaining character with a backstory of her own and I enjoyed the craftiness the authors used to combine the two stories with an element of 6 degrees of separation.

The town of Lake Starlight is like a character of its own and I am looking forward to future books set here. This is very much a character driven story with lessons learned and is a definite winner from this talented duo. I am already looking forward to seeing more of the Baileys In Brooklyn’s book.
