We asked our readers to nominate their favorite reads of 2017. Then we took to our Facebook page and asked people to vote. This process was not scientific at all..... We started with over 80 nominations for 25 "Favorite" spots. The books below had enough votes that we wanted to recognize them even though they didn't make the top 25. Playing by the Greek's Rules (Puffin Island, #0.5)Playing by the Greek's Rules by Sarah Morgan

3.5 stars ⭐️ - Worth a Reader's Time

Paperback received as a free gift

Lily and Nik are the original odd couple in this quick read. Well written and entertaining, there is a lot of emotional (and sexy) ground covered in a fairly short work.
I liked Lily from the beginning, but Nik grew on me. His emotional growth from being around Lily is what made this fun read work for me.

Silent Night, Unexpected NightSilent Night, Unexpected Night by Ella Jade

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Okay, to call this a book is a giant stretch. It’s not even a novella.
What’s here is decent. We see a enough of Tanner to know he’s a decent guy and it’s believable that an early 40 something divorced man would be attracted to a 21 year old woman who shows up dressed to impress.
As this was a free read, I can’t complain about the length, but I will say that this “bite” leaves the reader with plenty of un answered questions.

Doctor’s Fake FiancéeDoctor’s Fake Fiancée by Charlize Starr

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

There are a couple of things going in here.
1) a premise with potential (brother’s friend/reconnection/ needs to keep custody of his daughter) but somewhat poor execution. It was hard to like Max, he came across as cold. I just didn’t buy Lucy. She somehow lived with her abusive boyfriend, but they never shared a bed?
2) Editing issues.... there were inconsistencies in the story that a good editor would have caught.
3) KU click bait - the advertised story is only about 10% of the downloaded content. I typically check page count before clicking, this was listed at 96 pages which is believable for a novella, so imagine my surprise when I opened such a large “book” on my kindle. I picked this up for free, but would have been horribly annoyed had I paid for it.
I went into this expecting their to be certain limitations, given that the “book” was less than 100 pages, but this couldn’t even meet those lowered standards.

Van (Cold Fury #9) ~ Sawyer Bennett ~ New Release and Review

Van (Cold Fury, Book #9) Sawyer Bennett Release Date: November 28, 2017

Synopsis: Score one for the Carolina Cold Fury hockey team as a stone-cold badass melts for a woman who makes his blood run hot. As one of the league’s toughest enforcers, Van Turner is ruthless on the ice. He plays hard because it’s the only way to channel the rage boiling inside, and a reputation as an A-hole is better than everyone knowing the truth. Van has spent his entire life running from a secret that’s kept him from getting involved in relationships—or accepting lucrative deals with East Coast teams. Then the Carolina Cold Fury makes him an offer he can’t refuse . . . and Van meets a woman he can’t resist. Simone Fournier is the stubborn one in her family—and that’s saying something, considering her brothers are two of the Cold Fury’s biggest stars. Simone gets what she wants, and what she wants is Van. Still, there’s a part of him Simone can’t reach, no matter how hard she tries. In private, he’s all fire and passion. In public, he freezes her out. Van may want to push her away, but Simone won’t let him go that easily. Because this time, she’s playing for keeps. Sawyer Bennett’s New York Times bestselling Carolina Cold Fury series can be read together or separately.

About the Author:

Since the release of her debut contemporary romance novel, Off Sides, in January 2013, Sawyer Bennett has released multiple books, many of which have appeared on the New York Times, USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists. A reformed trial lawyer from North Carolina, Sawyer uses real life experience to create relatable, sexy stories that appeal to a wide array of readers. From new adult to erotic contemporary romance, Sawyer writes something for just about everyone. Sawyer likes her Bloody Marys strong, her martinis dirty, and her heroes a combination of the two. When not bringing fictional romance to life, Sawyer is a chauffeur, stylist, chef, maid, and personal assistant to a very active daughter, as well as full-time servant to her adorably naughty dogs. She believes in the good of others, and that a bad day can be cured with a great work-out, cake, or even better, both. Sawyer also writes general and women’s fiction under the pen name S. Bennett and sweet romance under the name Juliette Poe.

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Sawyer Bennett returns us to the land of the Carolina Cold Fury with Van Turner’s story. This is the final book in the Fournier sibling arc of the series and is written as a stand alone. The time line here runs parallel to Lucas’s book, so there are potential spoilers if you aren’t reading the series in order.
This is an interesting one for me. All of the Cold Fury men are very “Alpha” and Van is no exception, he is just more emotionally closed off than we’ve seen before - he’s honestly one of the harder heroes to get to know and invest in until you get to know him better.
I’m going to duck behind the computer while I say that I think Simone might just be my least favorite of Ms. Bennett’s heroines. Having said that, I like her for Van and I liked her more once she and Van got together, I just had a hard time embracing her as they got to that point.
Ms. Bennett does an excellent job of keeping the series fresh and the story lines varied as she pairs the team off with their lady loves. Van and Simone’s story has one of the more unique complications and it speaks to the author’s skill that she was able to take such difficult subject matter and introduce it into a romantic story.
I would also call this a sports romance “lite” as the book does center around a hockey playing hero and the couple would not be together except for the sport, but hockey definitely plays a back seat to the relationship and other off ice issues.
The Cold Fury series continues to be a “go to” for me and I am looking forward to the next installment.

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

This is a solid entry in Ms. Foster's Body Armor series, following former MMA fighter Miles as he reconnects with and protects Maxi.
The initial liaison between Miles and Maxi was brief and occurred when they were both at a cross roads in life. The connection between them was impactful for both, so it seemed natural that Maxi turned to Miles when she needed help.
Both characters were easy to like and root for, even if the romantic blinders they had on were frustrating at times. Ms. Foster did an excellent job of blending the romantic story with the suspense element of what was happening around Maxi's home. Both story lines were entertaining to follow and the suspense piece definitely kept me on my toes.
Close Contact is a part of a series and the series is a spin off, so there are several cameos from characters that we've met before. It's nice to catch up with the guys from the previous books and get glimpses of where they are now. That said, this is also very much a stand alone effort and could easily be enjoyed without having read the previous books. I am looking forward to see what happens to Sahara in the next installment of the series.

A Collection of Reviews

I've been playing catch up a little bit again. So, today we have a couple of fun holiday reads and one freebie....

The Christmas Cowboy Hero (Heart of Texas, #1)The Christmas Cowboy Hero by Donna Grant

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

This will give you the warm and fuzzies this holiday season!
Clayton is a retired Navy SEAL who returns home when his family’s ranch is in jeopardy. The ranch trouble brings Abby and her brothers into his life.
This is a sweet story with wonderful characters and an entertaining story. Well written, this is the kind of book that makes you want to curl up and read.

A Very Merry PrincessA Very Merry Princess by Susan Mallery

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

This was a cute novella that goes with the Happily Inc series.
Cade is a character that we have met before, but haven't spent a ton of time with. It was nice to get to know him a little more. Both Cade and Beth were fun to get to know and I enjoyed their story.
The characters from the previous Happily Inc stories appear in this work as well, so there is spoiler potential if you haven't read any of the books yet. Other than that, this is a self contained story that can easily be read on it's own.

Three Under the Mistletoe (Christmas Billionaire Menage Series, #1)Three Under the Mistletoe by Tia Siren
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Honestly, books like this frustrate me to no end. I am also using the term “book” loosely as key elements like character and plot development are no where to be found.
I could forgive the far fetched premise had there been something compelling about the players involved, but no such luck.
Basically, this is a high school like mini drama with some graphic language and sexy time thrown in. Add in multiple editing issues and I feel like I over paid for this free book.

Everest ~ S.L. Scott ~ Cover Reveal

Title: Everest

Author: S.L. Scott

Genre: Contemporary Romance/Romantic Suspense

Release Date: December 7, 2017

Cover Design: Letitia Hasser

Six foot three. Dynamic green eyes. Utterly irresistible.
Ethan Everest stole my breath the first time I saw him. He romanced me with skill, dazzled me with his charisma, and proceeded to steal my heart right after.
I might have fallen for his easy going smile the first time we met, but I fell for him the second time.
Honey-colored hair. Cherry-kissed lips. Captivatingly gorgeous.
Singer Davis was the first, and only, woman to ever intimidate me. She spoke to my heart with her wit, seduced me with her eyes, and became the only thing that made sense in a world that made none.
I let her slip through my fingers once. I won’t make that mistake twice.
Secrets broke us apart. Can a second chance bring us back together?

Living in the capital of Texas with her family, Scott loves traveling and avocados, beaches, and cooking with her kids. She's obsessed with epic romances and loves a good plot twist. Her favorite color is blue, but she likens it more toward the sky than the emotion. Her home is filled with the welcoming symbol of the pineapple and finds surfing a challenge though she likes to think she's a pro.

Destiny Plays (Santini #2)Destiny Plays by Leslie Pike

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a friend

Review Copy Provided by Author

This was a really fun and quick visit to St Helena and the Santini family.
Cristos and Kate are both "mature" characters who have been focused on their respective careers (Divorce lawyer for him, Shakespearean actress for her) when chance and a broken down car bring them together.
It was nice to see characters that are a bit older (40) at a natural crossroads in life and having them be able to connect with a special someone and see what happens next. As a novella length work, we didn't get a deep dive into the story, but that actually worked really well for the situation here. We were able to spend just enough time to get to know everyone and see these two fall for each other.
This is a continuation of a series, but it is not absolutely necessary to read the first book to enjoy this one.

This was a case of a cute idea that could have used better execution.
The bones of an interesting book are here, but the development just didn’t get there for me. Character and plot were two areas that seemed a bit flat.
When I first saw this book was free, the title almost had me not picking it up - my first impression was that it was KU click bait. I only picked it up after checking the page length and seeing that it was reasonable for a full length story.
Ms Wilde is a new author for me - Valentine and Ryder were interesting enough that I am curious about her other work. I think there is promise here to be developed.

Two Billionaires Next DoorTwo Billionaires Next Door by Jay S. Wilder

2.5 stars - Slightly Below Average read

Quick and semi Entertaining read.
The focus is definitely on sexy time versus character development or story line. Mindy, Zach, and Ethan are all likeable, but there isn't a lot of depth to them.
It really feels like a story that had potential, but just wasn't developed enough to reach it.

Mr Dirty ~ Nana Malone ~ Cover and Excerpt Reveal

Cover Design: Amy Daws
Release Date: December 13, 2017

I have a dirty mouth. That’s the truth. Women love it. And I have no plans on changing. Why would I? I like my life. The women, the partying, the fun. Until I meet my new neighbour. She’s messing with my good thing. She’s annoying, and persistent, and a pain in the…well you get the idea. She’s also gorgeous, and smart…and completely immune to me. And now she needs my help with a little Ex payback and I’m more than happy to lend my expertise. Now all I have to do is keep from falling for her in the process. How hard can that be?

His touch was softer than she had anticipated. If she had been in her right mind, she would have even described it as tender. But she was definitely not in her right mind. She looked up at him, feeling overwhelmed and confused. He trailed a path down her cheek to her chin, where his fingers rested lightly. Sophie forgot how to breathe. There was no mistaking the look in his eyes. There were no need for words. Oh my God, he wants to kiss me. Amidst all that had happened, as soon as the intention behind his look became obvious to her, her insides began to melt. A swarm of butterflies burst in her belly as they continued to gaze at each other. Nathan dipped his head slightly before stopping and scanning over her face as if checking for permission. Involuntarily, Sophie’s lips parted. She was close enough to see the shining gold of the dark stubble covering his jawline. He smelled like musk and ocean her wildest fantasy. God, please kiss me. Every heartbeat sent a violent throb between her legs as the anticipation of having Nathan Windsor this close to her began to take over her most primal instincts. Finally, Nathan tilted her chin upwards and, with his gaze unfaltering, met her lips with his. His mouth was hot, unbelievably soft and slightly sticky from the champagne. He gently flicked his tongue along her bottom lip teasingly slowly, before kissing her harder, his mouth firmly and passionately on hers. Sliding both hands around the small of her back, he tugged her into him. Her body pressed hard up against the firmness of his and she couldn’t help but push in further, wanting every single part of her sliding against him, wanting every part of him touching her. If he hadn’t been holding her so strongly, she was sure that her knees would have buckled and she would have fallen to the floor. There was not one single point in her life where she could remember ever feeling like she wanted someone this badly. Her head was swimming. “Jesus, you are so damn sexy. Why do you taste so good?” Nathan murmured, his words vibrating against her lips, his breath hot against her lips. It felt naughty and sensual. Hearing him say that she was turning him on made her moan softly. Instinctively, she canted her pelvis against him, her body moving independently of her mind. She needed him so bad. Nathan’s hand slid to her hips, tightening, and he groaned low as he pulled her against the length of his pulsing erection. The impact of her pelvic bone hitting his thigh lit a firework in her clitoris. She felt it pulse and begin to swell. He moved his mouth to the edge of her earlobe. “I really want to know what you taste like everywhere. Right here in your neck. On your belly. Right behind your knee. And Jesus, I really want to know what your pussy tastes like,” he whispered. This time, Sophie’s knees did buckle, though Nathan’s grip was tight enough to steady her. His voice seemed to travel directly to her clit, each word massaging the growing ball of heat gathering there. He bit her earlobe and she erupted in pleasurable goose bumps, the sweet pain tickling down her spine like an electric current. What the fuck was happening here?

Mr. Big by Nana Malone

One of Five ARC's for Mr. Dirty

About the Author

USA Today Best Seller, Nana Malone's love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense she "borrowed" from her cousin. It was a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana, and Nana was a precocious thirteen. She's been in love with kick butt heroines ever since. With her overactive imagination, and channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters. While she waits for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, in the meantime Nana works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as sassy and kick butt as she thinks she is.

Spider ~ Ilsa Madden-Mils ~ Blog Tour

From Wall Street Journal bestselling author Ilsa Madden-Mills comes a new standalone romance about a flawed hero and the woman he can’t forget.

Spider, a sexy and forbidden new standalone, is available NOW!

Title: Spider Author: Ilsa Madden-Mills Publication Date: November 13th, 2017
From Wall Street Journal bestselling author Ilsa Madden-Mills comes a new standalone romance about a flawed hero and the woman he can’t forget.
"She crossed my path and changed my whole direction."
He calls himself Spider.
I just knew him as the sinfully gorgeous guy with eyes of fire that fate sat next to me on the airplane.
I didn’t know who he really was…British rock star…my stepbrother.
He kissed me because he thought we’d never see each other again. We would.
Everyone warned me about him.
They told me he was ruthless and cold and screwed up.
They said he’d leave me with a hole in my heart.
Maybe I should have listened.
Maybe I should have built up a fortress to keep him out.
But I crumbled instead.
They say an unbreakable thread connects those who are destined to meet. If that’s true, then the moment he sat next to me, we were bound together forever.
He just had to figure it out before it’s too late…

How can one human man be so hot?
Spider sits on my toilet, shirtless, while I dab at his swollen eye. I’m doing my best to keep my eyes averted from the ink on his body, the way his tattoos swirl underneath his jeans, the way his chest is carved from stone.
Of course, I’m the stupid person who suggested he remove his shirt so I could see if he has any bruising on his chest. A cracked or broken rib can cause a lot of pain, and I want to be thorough, that’s all—I swear to baby Jesus.
He grinned at my request and whipped it off—which is the reason I’m now a mess.
There’s hardly any room to breathe with him in my small bathroom. I wipe at the spot of blood on his cheek as he watches me stoically, never taking his eyes off me, tracking my every movement.
“This will look worse tomorrow,” I murmur, just to ease the tension. I stand between his spread legs, acutely aware of his fresh scent, his pure magnetism. My hands shake and I have to focus to push an image of me straddling him, both of us naked, out of my head. I want to run my tongue over the tattoo on his neck. I want to bite him like an animal while he—
Good grief, Rose, stop the fantasy!
“You’d make a good nurse,” he says softly, his long black lashes fluttering softly against his chiseled cheekbones.
“Doctor of Psychology,” I correct him.
“Your dream?”
“Yes.” Although right now I’m dreaming of him… “I know that feeling. That’s how music is to me.” His golden-brown eyes watch me as I reach over to the medicine cabinet for more antiseptic and antibacterial cream, my chest perilously close to his face. I swear my nipples are reaching for him.
“Why psychology?”
I nod, pretending like I’m not all discombobulated. “My granny mainly. She loved to read people—literally. She ran a little palm-reading business out of her home before she died. All the old ladies of the neighborhood would come to see her. She’d make them coffee and they’d just…talk. She’d tell them what they needed to hear while I sat on the floor next to her and listened. There wasn’t any magic involved of course.” I laugh. “But…she was incredibly intuitive. She just got people. If someone twitched or looked left or right while they were talking, she’d have a reason for it and she’d tell me all about it after they left.”
“I think I would have loved your granny.” He curls an arm around me, tugging me close until my chest is a hair’s breadth away from his face. I recall our epic kiss on the plane. I feel the pressure of his taut thighs and my breath quickens as desire unfurls inside me.
A hum warms my blood. I want him—desperately.
And it’s entirely foolish.
He’s my stepbrother.
He doesn’t call girls back.
“Why does it seem like I’ve known you forever?” I ask, feeling myself gravitating closer.
He thinks about it, pushing a piece of hair out of my eyes. Cupping my nape, he pulls me in tighter until our noses meet. The back of his hand caresses my cheek and the heat from his touch burns, yet there’s a tautness in the roped muscles of his arms, as if he’s holding himself in check.
“Because I am you,” he says softly. “We’re so much alike, it’s staggering.” He pauses and stares deep into my eyes.
I nod. I can’t think. He’s so close to me, his eyes burning into mine. He closes his eyes and exhales. “I want you, Rose. You’re intoxicating.”
I suck in a sharp breath, our lips inches apart.
Is he going to kiss me? I want him to.
His eyes open after the silence has gone on too long, a smirk forming around his mouth. “You scared of me, Rose?”
“I’m scared you’ll rip my heart out.”
He stares at the LOST tattoo on his hand. “I probably will.” Spider-AvailableNow-KU.jpg

Oh the power of love!
Rose and Spider cross paths briefly when she is 11 and he is 16 when their lives could not have been more different. They did not know that they will meet again and play a key roll in each other's lives.
The story that follows after they reconnect sends the reader on a bit of a roller coaster as only very young love (17 and 22) can. Ms. Madden-Mills made me ache for Rose as she navigated her changing relationship with her adoptive mother, high school angst, post high school plans, and her brief dalliance with Spider. I was impressed with how much I could feel for both characters in just about half the book.
The second half of the story, the story of Spider's redemption made it impossible not to fall a little bit in love with him. I rooted for him, I rooted for Rose, and hoped they'd find the missing pieces they were both looking for.
One of the things I appreciated most about Spider is that while it was a story of young love, we also so other relationships evolve. Spider and his father in particular which showed us just how much the characters grew into being people we could really cheer for.
This was a fairly quick read, but definitely a good one!
