The Maid's Secret ~ Shari J Ryan ~ Blog Tour

THE MAID'S SECRET

by Shari J. Ryan

Blog Tour

Release Date: September 29, 2022

Genre: Historical Fiction
Trope: World War II

Synopsis

Czechoslovakia, 1940: “We will always have our memories,” he says, as the soldiers pull him away. “You will survive this. You are braver than you know. Remember that, always.” This heartbreaking World War Two page-turner shows that love is more powerful than hatred, bravery can overcome evil, and hope is stronger than darkness.

In the middle of the night, while I am curled in Ben’s arms, there is a harsh knock on the door. My blood turns to ice. The love of my life is Jewish, and I am a Romany gypsy maid; every second that we exist in Hitler’s Europe, we are in danger. Every day, we have been huddling around a crackling radio, listening for news of this evil war. Every night, we have feared we won’t live till dawn.

The banging continues, and we leap out of bed. I can hardly breathe as I open the door, seeing Nazis standing before us. My heart cracks as the soldiers grab Ben. I’m powerless to stop them from shoving him into a wagon, bound for the place of no return.

The love of my life is now imprisoned in wire with thousands of other innocent inmates. For every moment he is trapped behind the gates of hell, he gets closer to death—surviving on scraps of food, and forced to work in gruelling conditions.

The soldiers haven’t arrested me yet, but it’s only a matter of time. I vow to stay alive for Ben, not to give up hope. I’ll stop at nothing to escape the enemy as they hunt me down.

With our fate in the hands of monsters, will we ever see each other again? And will our love for one another save us—or kill us?

Fans of Fiona Valpy, The Tattooist of Auschwitz and The Book of Lost Names will be utterly glued to this heart-wrenching and utterly gripping World War Two novel which shows that, if you have love, you can survive anything…

I have come to expect excellent historical story telling from Ms Ryan’s WWII fiction, the Maid’s Secret is true to this tradition.

Told in alternate points of view, we see Mila and Benedikt navigate the late 1930’s as parts of Europe slip further and further under Hitler’s grip. I grew to like both of these characters and rooted for them, even when I had an idea of what their futures were going to hold. I also appreciated how their examples influenced the people around them, this is especially true for Mila and Hana (Benedikt’s mother)

Ms Ryan does an excellent job of using dates to progress the time line so that we get to experience the increasing pressure the Jewish population experienced in the late 30’s and the horrors of their incarceration during WWII.

I won’t give away what happens to this characters, but I will say that their journeys are valuable. It is increasingly important that we remember, even if it’s in fictional works, the horrors of WWII.

An Ex to Remember is a book that does its job and is a great little escape. By that, I mean it is entertaining with interesting characters and I found myself rooting for Vic and Aubrey to find their respective happy endings.

The meet cute (again) between these two is unique and the set up for the story between Vic and Aubrey is one I haven’t seen very often. I enjoyed getting to know these two and seeing things unfold. I appreciated how these two both evolved and took the effort to understand that sometimes the person is right, but the time is not.

An Ex to Remember is part of a series, but stands well on its own. The secondary cast is primarily pulled from some of the other installments of the series and play a semi impactful role here. I am curious about the other books in the TCC group!

This is a book that’s been on my TBR for a while and well, I’m kind of thinking it should have stayed there.
Sloth is written in 3 parts and they don’t really flow together all that well.
Several parts of this story are disjointed and don’t really make sense. This is supposedly and “updated” version of the story, but it still needs editing.
I found Cleo and Kellan interesting characters, but I think they could have gotten where they were going without a good chunk of the first portion of the story.

This was a cute story and introduces a fairly large family that I’m sure will be featured in other books.
The story line for Greg, Shannon, and Ryan was interesting and unique.
The thing that caught me up and I found distracting were some of the cultural references that really dated the book. Things like the cars they drove and the beginning use of cell phones.
It shouldn’t have detracted from the emotive evolutions that took place, but it did. Maybe that’s just me…. As much as I am curious about the other Hawkins family members, I’m not sure I want to risk the same distraction.

The Donor by Brenda Rothert ~ New Release & Review

"I want your sperm.”

Those were Shelby Grant’s first words to me. Didn’t even want me to buy her a drink first. See, Shelby isn’t like other women. After researching Denver’s most eligible bachelors in search of her ideal sperm donor, she chose me.

As a pro hockey player, I’m used to women wanting things from me, but my swimmers? That’s a new one. Somehow, though, with her color-coded parenting plan, sales pitch, and contract, Shelby sells me on the idea. After my donation, she doesn’t want anything more to do with me.

I can’t seem to stay away, though. As her belly grows and I get to know the tightly wound mom-to-be, I get attached.

Shelby’s jaded about men and I’m not looking to settle down. There are countless reasons why crossing the contractual line between us is a bad idea.

But once Shelby gives birth to our child, all bets are off. Whether I planned for it or not, I have a family now, and I’m not letting go without a fight.

Brenda Rothert and a hockey book? Sign me up!
The Donor isn’t your typical hockey book as very little of the action takes place on the ice. I would call this more of a book where the male lead happens to play hockey.

Beau and Shelby have a meet cute that’s probably one of the more unique out there. I enjoyed getting to meet these two and see them evolve from their odd initial encounter to friends and more. In appreciated the “playboy” hockey player had to work for Shelby’s attention.

As the first book in a new series, there is some ground work being done here, but that world building is seamless to the remaining story. I left The Donor curious about what’s next for Beau and Shelby, the larger Fox family, and the hockey team too.

Coen ~ Sawyer Bennett ~ New Release & Review

Coen: A Pittsburgh Titans Novel Sawyer Bennett Release Date: September 27, 2022

Synopsis:

Read the first THREE chapters of Coen

Coen Highsmith was a league star, but he lost more than his team the day the Pittsburgh Titans’ plane crashed. Can he be saved from his downward spiral of guilt and regret to become the man he once was? I had it all—a successful hockey career, the respect and adoration of the fans, a rotation of beautiful women warming my bed, and a feeling of self-worth and contentment with the direction of my life. But that all changed the day the team plane went down, taking my only chance of redemption with it. Now I’m left with the daily reminder of all my failures and my inability to correct them. My new teammates are tired of my attitude and following my suspension, I hole up in a mountain cabin to get away from all of it. The isolation is exactly what I need to get out of my own head, and I’m beginning to think I could be content in this quiet forever. Tillie Marshall isn’t the type of woman who would usually catch my attention, yet she manages to do so for all the wrong reasons. I’m here for the peace and seclusion but the quirky artist is hell-bent on destroying that by cutting down the trees that separate our properties so she can open a pottery studio. If it’s a fight she wants, it’s a fight she’ll get. I have the money and the time and no issues bringing her down through the court system. While I see flashes of steely determination within her, I’ve found that being a jerk comes naturally these days and she won’t be hard to intimidate. Unfortunately, that gorgeous and somewhat odd neighbor who has been causing me grief is creating another type of feeling within me. And once that spark is lit, Tillie displays a faith in me that for the first time since the crash I desperately want to believe. Now it’s time for me to step up and become the man—no, a better man than I once was.

Coen is the 4th book of the Titans series and the title character has been someone we've seen in various secondary roles in the previous three books. Having this back story and knowing a little bit of who he is made me curious to read his story and Ms Bennett did not disappoint!

I appreciated that Ms Bennett approached Coen's emotional state head on. She opened things up and let us see inside his head and heart as he deals with the prolonged aftermath of tragedy. While his approach may not be the healthiest, it was honest, and thankfully his safety net never got the hint to go away.

Tilden (Tillie) is a great counter point and love interest for Coen. While they had a rough start, I think she had a element of personality that he needed. I genuinely liked her and found her inner strength to be appealing. She's someone who I would love to have as a friend.

Combine these great character with Coen's emotional and career evolutions and this is a definite winner of a book. Techinally, this is a stand alone book and in terms of other characters Coen's story is fairly independent. But..... given the emotional baggage coming with Coen, this is a book that works better if the other books in the series are read first. I really hope we see more of the Titans in the future.... and hopefully Coen will sneak in too.

Give Me Love by Corinne Michaels ~ New Release & Review

Give Me Love by Corinne Michaels is now live!

New York Times bestselling author Corinne Michaels brings another second chance standalone in the town of Rose Canyon.

My biggest mistake was falling in love with my fake husband.
It was supposed to be a marriage of convenience between two best friends in the military. Our plan was to collect extra money and stay stationed together.
But what failed? Me. I did. Because suddenly I wanted a man who was never meant to be my real husband.

In an attempt to remedy my mistake, I severed all ties and put my life as a combat medic and Emmett Maxwell behind me. I’ve lost too many people to open myself up to love.

Now I’m working as a private investigator, and fate has stepped in, forcing our paths to intersect again when I’m looking into the disappearance of a missing girl with ties to Emmett’s hometown. A case I fear puts his life in danger.

He gives me one week to prove my suspicions and then I need to sign the divorce papers and leave. The problem with that? The moment I see Emmett again, I realize how foolish it was to leave him, to think I could ever stop loving him. All I want is a second chance.

When the case threatens not only my life but also his, I’m faced with my worst fear. How many times can a heart break before it shatters beyond repair?

Welcome back to Rose Canyon! At the end of Brie and Sebastian’s book we discovered that Sheriff Emmett had a wife no one knew about. In Give Me Love, we get to find out what that is all about.

Told using flashbacks, we get to see how Emmett and Blake came to be a couple and then became estranged to the point his dearest friends didn’t even know about her. I appreciated the story telling skill that moved the story forward while also making me like these two and root for them as a couple. The secondary cast is interesting and the core group of friends continue to play a big role in things.

Give Me Love is sequential in the series and references the previous story, so while it is a stand alone, I would suggest reading the series in order.

If I liked the book so much, what’s up with the missing 1/4 star…. Well, I think this might fall under personal preference, but there is a key plot element that i just don’t agree with. I’m not going to go into detail and I understand why author Michaels used this device- it’s unique and accomplished a lot in terms of the story, but I didn’t like how it exploited a key character’s fears or how the emotional aftermath was dealt with. Again, I think this might be a preference issue, and the overall story is excellent, so I don’t want to discourage anyone from reading the book.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
By Tia Louise

Can you love what you can't touch?

No touching.
It's the only rule in this business, and trust me, with my money and power, "hands off" is not a problem.
I don't need the women I employ to satisfy my needs...
Until her.
She's different than the other girls, innocent, intoxicating, impossibly seductive.
I can't take my eyes off her, and it's not long before hot looks turn to hotter touches.
I'm the boss, after all, I call the shots.
And nothing's more fun than breaking the rules.

I came to this country to pursue my dream... but it was a lie, a scam that quickly fell apart.
Desperate, I took the only job I could with no work visa.
They promised no one would know.
They promised no touching.
Until I saw him.
Dark scruff shading an arrogant grin, lean muscles stretching expensive fabric, eyes like twilight sending electricity from my stomach to my toes.
He's my boss, but the way he watches makes me do dirty things.
For his eyes only, I'm uninhibited, experienced, a seductress.
Only, our game turns dangerous when a watcher threatens everything, and my hands-on hero vows to save me.

More Than I Could ~ Adriana Locke ~ Cover Reveal

MORE THAN I COULD by Adriana Locke
  Release Date: September 26th
Cover Designer: Kari March
  Photographer: J. Ashley Converse Photography
Cover Models: Dane Peterson and Maddi Hansen
  Genre/Tropes: Single Dad/Blue Collar/Nanny/Close Proximity/Grumpy-Sunshine/Small Town Romance
Blurb: This grumpy hero makes things hard for the nanny. You know what? I’m over him. His moods. The verbal sparring. Those biceps that look like they were cut from marble. Okay, maybe I’m not over him being shirtless. Chase Marshall is a single dad with a daughter to love, so fighting with me shouldn’t be a priority. But he can’t seem to stay away. The lingering looks when he thinks I’m not watching. The seemingly innocent touches while making breakfast. The smirks gracing his lips after I’m irritated by his antics. He’s ridiculously sweet to his daughter. I even catch glimpses of how charming he could be to me—if he wanted to. But that’s the problem. He acts like he doesn’t want to. That he doesn’t want me. He does. It’s in the innuendos, the way he places his hand in the small of my back—the almost kisses while we’re putting away groceries. The way he comes running when I see a spider and checks on me before he goes to bed. Even if he does grumble about it. I might not be totally over my boss, but I’m going to make him think I am. Let’s see how frustrated Mr. Marshall gets now.   From USA Today Bestselling author Adriana Locke comes a grumpy/sunshine, blue-collar single dad, nanny romance. This small-town romance is a standalone novel with tons heat and even more heart.   More Than I Could is a standalone in the Coming Home series where one author a month will be delivering a brand-new story about coming home.

The Watcher bring us back to the word of Hidden Justice with Damien, one of the team members who has been in the background in the prior books. It was fun to see him shift to the forefront and focus on protecting (while falling for) Raven. These two were fun to get to know. They had a great instant connection that unfolded to a interesting relationship as they grew closer and aslo dealt with a mystery.

This installment of the Hidden Justice series was slightly less intense than the prior editions, as the drama is not directly related to the agency. There is still a strong intrigue element and I enjoyed seeing the differnt take on the related story.

Fast paced, The Watcher, is a quick read that pulls you in and doesn't let go. The secondary cast is small, but impactful. It was nice to see the previous Hidden Justice leading men appear to help Damien when he needed it. I also appreciated getting to know other background characters a little bit better. I am hoping these will feature chaaracters soon!
