Nothing But Trouble ~ Amy Andrews ~ Release Blitz

NBT - RB banner.jpg
"It's got a Jill Shalvis/SEP vibe and I had a smile on my face all the way through. Loved every minute." - Kate Meader, USA Today bestselling author
Nothing But Trouble, an all-new small town romance from USA Today bestselling author Amy Andrews, is available now!
Nothing But Trouble_1600.jpg
For five years, PA Cecilia Morgan’s entire existence has revolved around playing “left tackle” to former NFL quarterback Wade Carter. She’s so good at her job, the man can’t even buy his own condoms! Well, today she’s giving the Worst-Boss-Ever her notice.
To say CC’s announcement was a bombshell is an insult to bombs. And horribly timed, with his publisher breathing down his neck. Not too many things defy Wade Carter. Well…except his mother. His PA. And the blinking cursor of doom.
Time to call an audible.
CC is gobsmacked. Three months in his small hometown—somewhere devoid of “female distractions,” he says—while he finishes his book, and he’ll cut her loose?! And he thinks a cowboy hat and dimpled smile and she’ll just say yes? Penalty flag.
Wade can’t believe CC and the council arranged busloads of single women to visit their dying town. She never gives up. But three Super Bowl rings prove he’s no quitter, either.
But then their fighting starts to feel a whole lot like foreplay. What’s a quarterback to do when he realizes he might be falling for his left tackle?
Time to throw a Hail Mary.

Elizabeth's Review

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by publisher via Net Galley

I picked this book up because the premise was cute - the idea of a retired athlete with a fear of relationships falling for his assistant. The execution of that premise and the world building that went with it made to book even more fun.

Wade and CC are both interesting characters and they were fun to get to know. They had a great dynamic from the beginning and it was a pleasure to watch their relationship transition from strictly professional to more.

Add it a great secondary cast and cute town full of potential future stories and Nothing But Trouble makes a strong introduction to a new series.

We were supposed to be best friends
But turned out to be worst enemies…
Penn
They say revenge is a dish best served cold.
I’d had four years to stew on what Daria Followhill did to me, and now my heart is completely iced.
I took her first kiss.
She took the only thing I loved.
I was poor.
She was rich.
The good thing about circumstances? They can change. Fast.
Now, I’m her parents’ latest shiny project.
Her housemate. Her tormentor. The captain of the rival football team she hates so much.
Yeah, baby girl, say it—I’m your foster brother.
There’s a price to pay for ruining the only good thing in my life, and she’s about to shell out some serious tears.
Daria Followhill thinks she is THE queen. I’m about to prove to her that she’s nothing but a spoiled princess.
Daria
Everyone loves a good-old, unapologetic punk.
But being a bitch? Oh, you get slammed for every snarky comment, cynical eye roll, and foot you put in your adversaries’ way.
The thing about stiletto heels is that they make a hell of a dent when you walk all over the people who try to hurt you.
In Penn Scully’s case, I pierced his heart until he bled out, then left it in a trash can on a bright summer day.
Four years ago, he asked me to save all of my firsts for him.
Now he lives across the hall, and there’s nothing I want more than to be his last everything.
His parting words when he gave me his heart were that nothing in this world is free.
Now? Now he is making me pay.

I finished Pretty Reckless (my first LJ Shen read) yesterday and it took me a while to know where to start.

At first Daria, our female lead, reminded me a little bit of a car accident on the highway. I didn’t really like her, but I couldn’t look away from her either. To be honest, none of the characters (with the exception of Daria’s younger sister) were very sympathetic in the beginning of the book.

While the characters didn’t start out sympathetic, they were compelling and watching the layers for Daria and Penn get peeled back made them more relatable and easier to root for. I was also relieved when Daria's parents truly got involved in the story, it added a layer for me that had I had been missing.

This is a well written story that while the characters are the right age for a YA read, this is so much more. There are complex emotional issues, family dynamics, and several taboos dealt with.
The evolutions that both Penn and Daria experienced had me rooting for them to eventually find a happy place and left me impressed with both of them.

This is the first book in a new series focused on the students of All Saints High and I am curious to see what come of some the more entertaining secondary characters here. Pretty Reckless also makes me want to read the LJ Shen books lurking on my TBR.

Hot Under the Collar ~ Roxanne St Claire ~ Cover Reveal

New York Times bestselling author Roxanne St. Claire is kicking off a brand new series and we couldn't be more excited about it! Check out the cover for HOT UNDER THE COLLAR and be on the lookout for it soon!

About HOT UNDER THE COLLAR

Firefighter Braden Mahoney is devastated when his beloved Weimaraner, Jelly Bean, fails the canine arson investigator test. Faced with the challenge of raising the money for advanced training, it’s Braden’s sweet grandmother and her best friend who suggest he use the services of the new event planner in town. Not that he needs a push in Cassie Santorini’s direction. Ever since she arrived, Braden has had his eye on the sassy Greek goddess…and can’t stop thinking about getting the rest of him on her, too.
Cassie has spent years putting family first, even moving to Bitter Bark when her mother falls in love with the local veterinarian. Having a huge new extended “family” is fun, especially when one smokeshow of a firefighter attends the gatherings, but Cassie has no plans to remain in this small town. She’s ready to pursue her big city dreams. But when Braden asks for an assist for his precious pup, Cassie agrees to help him set up a town-wide scavenger hunt. It isn’t exactly a hardship to be around those blue eyes and brawny shoulders, especially since they both agree everything – even the undeniable sparks that crackle between them – is temporary.
But when temporary gets complicated by feelings that might lead to forever, Braden and Cassie start to question the direction they're headed. Should they follow their dreams…or their hearts? It’ll take a dog with a bad nose and a sweet soul, two particularly meddlesome grandmas, and some help from the clan that loves them to make sure Cassie and Braden follow the clues and find their way to each other’s arms.
Just like The Dogfather, the covers of The Dogmothers were all photographed at Alaqua Animal Refuge in Florida using rescue dogs and local heroes, and a portion of the first month’s sales of every book is donated to that amazing organization.

About the Dogmothers series

Daniel Kilcannon, a widower with six unmarried kids, has not only orchestrated wonderfully happy endings for all his offspring…he’s found one of his own. That leaves his grown nieces and nephews plus his adult stepkids all in need of their own magical romances. Is The Dogfather too preoccupied with his new lady love to pull the strings and make the matches? Maybe. But there’s a new team in town and these two might be polar opposites in life but they are lined up in love. One grandmother has the steel spine of a Greek warrior, the other has the heart of an Irish poet. Together, along with two darling dachshunds, these Dogmothers won’t stop until all nine of their grandchildren are hooked, hitched, and happy.
When Agnes Santorini arrives in Bitter Bark, she has something to prove. The notoriously nasty Greek grandma seeks to show her growing family that she’s an all new Yiayia, inside and out. At the same time, Finola Kilcannon, the beloved octogenarian Irish blogger, knows that her role as the mistress of Waterford Farm is now in the hands of her son’s fiancée, and it’s time for Gramma Finnie to start the next chapter in her life. It doesn’t take long for these ladies to realize that they are stronger, better, and way more powerful together than apart, so they move into a Victorian that’s aging as gracefully as they are, and get to work. It takes a wee bit of meddling, a dash of manipulation, and plenty of help from man’s best friend, but the Dogmothers soon become as good as their predecessor, the Dogfather, at orchestrating a happily ever after.
In this new spin-off series, there’s laughter, love, heartache, hope, and happy endings in store for the Mahoney, Santorini, and, of course, the Kilcannon clans. With nine full length novels planned, plus a holiday novella every year, readers are in for a treat that will take them through 2021! Fans of The Dogfather series will find the same level of emotional intensity, familiar family connections and characters, and, of course, an unforgettable dog at the very heart of every story.
Watch for the first two books in 2019: HOT UNDER THE COLLAR (on sale May 31 – preorder now!) THREE DOG NIGHT (coming Fall of 2019) And many, many more!

Alexander “Rush” Markov has been given an ultimatum by his team—shape up or ship out. Alex is celebrating his biggest season in professional hockey, and he’s enjoying every minute of it—perhaps a little too much. He’s been non-stop partying like a rockstar since his team won it all, and management isn’t pleased. Rosalind Newcomb is the quintessential good girl, and she’s fine with her role. Sure, she gets lonely and wishes for a special someone, but the choices on Madrona island are slim to none. When a panty-melting mystery man disrupts the peace and quiet in her bookstore, it’s dislike at first sight. The infuriating man turns her ordered life upside down and inside out and has her thinking about hot summer nights and tangled sheets. Excerpt:
“Hold still, Uncle Luca.”
My niece Emerson gives me her best glare, but she’s five and cute, so it makes me smile.
“I’m trying,” I tell her, checking out the dark purple polish she’s trying to brush onto my nails.
It’s not my inability to hold still that has more nail polish on my skin than my nails; it’s her technique. My “MANicure”, as my two nieces like to call it, started with my ten-year-old niece Cora and was then passed off to Emerson.
“I found yogurt!” Cora says as she breezes into my bathroom. “It’s got strawberries in the bottom, but that’s okay. This face mask will make you smell good, Uncle Luca.”
I try not to roll my eyes. It’ll be better than the last face mask they whipped up in the kitchen, which had butter in it and was a bitch to scrub off in the shower.
“I have to leave for practice in twenty-five minutes,” I remind the girls. “And I still need a shower. So you have ten more minutes to beautify me.”
“Will you paint my nails, too?” Cora asks me.
“Sure.”
I was shit at painting nails when I first became the legal guardian of my two nieces and one nephew a little over a year ago. With practice, though, I’ve gotten pretty damn good at it.
“How long ‘til Gram and Gramps will be here?” Emerson asks, still painting my thumb nail even though she’s looking at me.
“About four hours ‘til their flight lands, then maybe an hour for them to get to the house.”
Her toothless grin of excitement makes me ignore the nail polish I can feel on my knuckle.
“Emerson!” Cora yells. “You ruined it! That looks awful.”
Cora picks up the bottle of purple nail polish and Emerson’s happy expression drops away.
“Give it to me,” Cora huffs, holding out her hand for the handle to the polish. “I never should have let you do it.”
“Hey, now.” I give Cora a sharp look. “She was doing her best.”
Cora’s eyes flood with tears. Emerson edges closer to me, because she knows what happens when Cora gets upset.
“He won’t let us do spa days if you mess it up!” Cora cries, glaring at her younger sister. “You ruined everything!”
“You didn’t ruin anything,” I tell Emerson. “And Cora, I never said we wouldn’t do this again. We can do a big spa day after my road trip, okay?”
Cora wipes her eyes and nods, still crying. It kills me to see her like this. As the oldest, she carries more of the weight from the deaths of her parents than her siblings. We’ve been in counseling for more than a year now, transitioning through the death of their mother, my sister-in-law Danielle, to the kids’ new life with me as their guardian. The clinical terms for what Cora struggles with—anxiety and controlling tendencies—are easier for me to handle than her breakdowns.
The tension leaves the room and Emerson starts my massage, which is pretty much just her karate chopping my shoulders, while Cora slathers strawberry yogurt onto my face.
“Is your shoulder better?” Cora asks me.
“Yep, it’s all good.”
“Think my mashage helped?” Emerson asks from behind me.
She can’t pronounce some words, and I kinda hope that’ll last longer, because it gets me every time.
“It definitely helped,” I tell her.
I tweaked my shoulder at practice yesterday, and Cora noticed me wince when I was taking out the trash last night. She worries about every sinus cold and bruise I get. I can’t blame the kid. Her dad, my brother Matt, died serving in Iraq and her mom passed away from cancer a year later.
“Hey, let’s get your nails painted, Cora,” I say after glancing at my watch. “I’ve only got five minutes til I have to hit the shower.” I turn to Emerson. “Can you go get the nail polish remover, peanut?”
“Okay.” She races from the room, brown curls flying behind her.

Luca is a sweetly emotional story hiding in plain sight behind a hockey facade. The sport has a key role, as it is Luca’s career, but the person behind the athlete is the focus here.

Ms Rothert did a fantastic job of letting us see who Abby and Luca are and how they both are dealing with the baggage they are carrying. The situations faced are dealt with gently and made me root for the couple to find their way to happy.

This is a fairly quick read, but packs a punch. The supporting cast is small, teammates make an appearance, but the scene stealers are Luca’s nieces and nephews. The second in a series, Luca is very much a stand alone book. We continued to get to know some of the team, so I am curious to see how the series plays out and if future books will continue to be independent.

Baby Mine: Hunter & Lennon, #1 by Kennedy Fox ~ New Release and Review

I saw her first.
Blonde. Gorgeous. Feisty.
I was smitten.

But it didn’t matter because she chose him and he was my best friend and roommate. I’d never be able to compete with that, so I pushed her away instead. It was easy when she lived hours away, and I didn’t have to see her every day, but then she moved in with us.
Now, I’m screwed.

To her singing in the shower every morning, dancing in the kitchen while she makes coffee, and doing yoga in our living room, I can’t stop thinking about her in all the wrong ways. She’s not mine and never will be, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting to push her against a wall and claim her mouth.

She’s constantly on me for making messes, bringing chicks home every weekend, and being a smartass when their PDA gets on my nerves. Considering neither of them know how I feel, it’s not fair for the way I act toward them. I should move out so I can get over her for good; however, the selfish part of me can’t let go.

But then the unthinkable happens...
When my best friend dies in a motorcycle accident, the two of us are left to grieve our loss together. Instead of pushing her away, I pull her closer.

Just as we come to terms with our new reality, she finds out she’s pregnant with his baby.
And I’m left to make the hardest decision of my life...

This was a book I was very curious about given the blurb. The premise was unique and ultimately, I enjoyed the read, but there were things I struggled with.

What I loved:
The characters. Hunter and Brandon are excellent friends/roommates. The feeling that they would do anything for each other makes them appealing. I found myself feeling bit bad for Hunter and understood his evolution. Lennon is a little oblivious, but likeable.

The overall story: The evolution of Hunter and Lennon’s relationship from adversaries to friends to a quasi family was emotional and tugged at the heart strings.

Where I struggled:
Honestly, the first 1/3 of the book was a bit hard for me. While I understood the need to establish 1. The seriousness of Lennon and Brandon’s romantic relationship 2. The animosity of Lennon and Hunter’s relationship 3. The complexity of Lennon’s parental relationship, it felt like several scenes and situations were on repeat.

The other thing I struggled with was the ending. Not that it was a cliffhanger, I expected that given that this is book 1 of a duet, but with an unexpected and additional conflict slipped in at the last moment. I am curious to see how this plays out, but I’m just not sure it’s needed (this is of course my opinion).

Overall, Baby Mine is a read I enjoyed and I am curious about how everything will be resolved in book 2 of the duet.

the mister hi res 1.22.19
London, 2019. Life has been easy for Maxim Trevelyan. With his good looks, aristocratic connections, and money, he’s never had to work and he’s rarely slept alone. But all that changes when tragedy strikes and Maxim inherits his family’s noble title, wealth, and estates, and all the responsibility that entails. It’s a role he’s not prepared for and one that he struggles to face.
But his biggest challenge is fighting his desire for an unexpected, enigmatic young woman who’s recently arrived in England, possessing little more than a dangerous and troublesome past. Reticent, beautiful, and musically gifted, she’s an alluring mystery, and Maxim’s longing for her deepens into a passion that he’s never experienced and dares not name. Just who is Alessia Demachi? And can Maxim protect her from the malevolence that threatens her? And what will she do when she learns that he’s been hiding secrets of his own?
From the heart of London through wild, rural Cornwall to the bleak, forbidding beauty of the Balkans, The Mister is a roller-coaster ride of danger and desire that leaves the reader breathless to the very last page.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a friend

As we have read the Confessions of the Heart series, Mack has been there supporting his friends as they found love. He is a character that I've wanted to know more about from the hints given and we get that chance here in this well written second chance story.

In this installment of the series, we connect with Mack just as Izzy (his teenage love) returns to town and they literally run into each other. The connection between these two jumps off the page from the time first time they interact and it just gets better from there.

This is the sweetest of the Confessions books. Using flashbacks, Ms Jackson introduces us to the young Izzy and Mack so that we can see the foundation of their story as well as what imploded their relationship the first time. This combined with the present day couple make it impossible not to root for them.

Pieces of Us is a great way to wrap up this series of books. There are brief glimpses of Ian and Jace (the brothers featured in the first books) that let us know how they are doing now, but the focus is really on Mack, Izzy, and her sons. The angst level here is a bit lower, but it's definitely there as not only do we see a past that has to be dealt with, but also an external threat.

Stories like Pieces of Us just reinforce Ms Jackson's status of a must read author for me.
