Power Play by Toni Aleo ~ New Release and Review

Power Play by Toni Aleo is AVAILABLE NOW!
Universal -- getbook.at/PowerPlayTA

Posey Adler is coming home. After a devastating journey for what she mistakenly thought was true love, she is saying to hell with men and love forever. As the Nashville Assassins’s new assistant coach for special teams, Posey is ready to focus on her job and have the attention on her for a change. She’s been haunted by her place in her sister’s shadow, but this is her chance to shine and force her family to take notice. But in order to make a name for herself, she’s going to have to go toe-to-toe with her team’s leading power play scorer.

Boon Hoenes lives for special teams. The power play is his favorite thing about the game. He loves having that advantage over his opponent. And most of the time, it’s his quick thinking that sends the puck to the back of the goal when he’s on the ice. Off the ice, however, no amount of quick thinking prepared his heart for being dumped by his college sweetheart. Boon has sworn off women, but when Posey Adler comes onto his ice—and kicks him off his beloved power play—he decides she’s one woman he doesn’t want to swear off. They’ve both been hurt, but instead of going in for the penalty kill, Boon is ready to convince Posey their hearts are the secret to how they’ll win. How they’ll score the ultimate goal. A forever kind of love.

My name is Toni Aleo and I’m a total dork.
I am a wife, mother of two and a bulldog, and also a hopeless romantic.
I am the biggest Shea Weber fan ever, and can be found during hockey season with my nose pressed against the Bridgestone Arena’s glass, watching my Nashville Predators play!
When my nose isn’t pressed against the glass, I enjoy going to my husband and son’s hockey games, my daughter’s dance competition, hanging with my best friends, taking pictures, scrapbooking, and reading the latest romance novel.
I have a slight Disney and Harry Potter obsession, I love things that sparkle, I love the color pink, I might have been a Disney Princess in a past life… probably Belle.
… and did I mention I love hockey?

Elizabeth's Review

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Author

In Power Play, Ms Aleo returns us to the world of the Nashville Assassins focusing on Posey Adler, younger daughter of series foundation Ellie and Shea Adler.

Posey is a character we’ve seen briefly in previous books, but don’t know well. We get to know her and love interest/hockey player, Boon, much better here.

Both characters come together after being hurt and seeing them take second chances on love is sweet and heartwarming. I liked both Posey and Boon and enjoyed their interactions as they tried to figure things out.

My struggle/complaint with the book is the set up. The Assassins is a family team and while Posey is uniquely qualified for the coaching position given to her, I would have expected more push back about her getting involved with a player on the team. I felt like this was a conflict element that could have been explore more fully and make the story stronger.

I am curious to see where the Next Generation portion of the series is headed.

Review Round Up ~ Vacation addition (December 30)

I am still catching up from being gone for a week.... Thanks to wifi issues, I ended up throwing my "plan" for reading out the window.....

New Release:

Forever My Duke (Unlikely Duchesses, #2)Forever My Duke by Olivia Drake

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

My Forever Duke is the second in the Unlikely Duchess series and I found myself enjoying it just as much as the first.

Natalie is a strong heroine, especially considering she took a huge risk to fulfill a promise to a friend. I enjoyed getting to know her and seeing how her opinions evolved and changed as she got to know the world she was temporarily living in.

Hadrian, the Duke in question, was an entertaining hero. I appreciate his immediate desire to help and willingness to intervene as needed to help.

This well written book features an excellent meet cute, flirtation, emotional growth, and a bit of intrigue as well. My only complaint is that while we see the couple find a happy ending, we are left with several unresolved questions. I would have enjoyed knowing Leo’s (the little boy who brought them together) fate.

TBR Reads:

Back Check (Aces Hockey, #4)Back Check by Kelly Jamieson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a friend

Review copy purchased by blog

Kelly Jamieson is another I discovered in the last couple of years via a recommendation from Kate Meader, so when this book popped on sale I grabbed it.

Tanner is a player for the Chicago Aces and standing up for one of his teammates in their wedding when he discovers that the wedding planner is his college girlfriend.

It was fun to see Tanner and Katelyn reconnect. I found myself liking both character and rooting for them. I appreciated the fact that the reconnection wasn’t easy for either and the ghosts of their previous relationship were dealt with before they moved forward.

Add in a good emotional arc and a stellar secondary cast and this is an enjoyable read. If you have followed the series, this is a great catch up with previous characters. There is enough background that this also works as standalone for readers just joining the series.

Be My DecemberBe My December by Rachel Brookes

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Copy received for Free

A decent read with elements of intrigue and redemption.
I enjoyed Eden and Ky and characters and a couple.

My complaints were that it seemed to take a awful long time for them to connect. Ky’s back and forth initially made it hard to know what to think of his actions. There was also some elements of confusion regarding how Josh and Ashlyn fit into everything early on.

I am curious about Josh’s book.

Amazon

Night with a SEAL (Hot SEALs, #1)Night with a SEAL by Cat Johnson

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is a book I picked up for free.
It is an entertaining, quick read, but.... it felt more like an intro into something else than a stand alone read.

I liked Jon and Ali, but don’t feel like I got to know either of them very well. The plot drivers of the book also seem to be more about Jon’s military career than the relationship between him and Ali.

I am curious about the other books in the series, but I’m not sure I’ll be rushing to buy them.

AUTHOR BIO:
Lana Brazen is the alter ego of a bestselling contemporary romance author who believes romance doesn’t need to end just because you crossed over forty. In a fantasy life, she was an anthropologist, a journalist and a world-famous novelist on the level of F. Scott Fitzgerald. None of that has happened. Instead, she’s written over twenty romances, mothered four children and remains with the one and only. Sometimes, she likes things a little hotter, spicier, raunchier than contemporary trysts, and so begins this chapter.

EXCERPT:

The Doctor Will See You (excerpt) by Lana Brazen
I didn’t know what I’d gotten myself into. Recently divorced, I’d met a young woman who just listened to me rant. I didn’t know why I felt the need to expound my current sexual status on her, but the dating apps had frustrated me. Who could you trust on there? Singles adventure clubs? The annual fees were high, and only half the activities interested me. And then there were the simple singles bars, which I entered once before turning right back around and leaving.
Being unmarried sucked in this aspect. The issue was I still wanted sex. I didn’t want to be alone with only my fingers. I wanted the feel of a man—the wet of his tongue, the curl of his fingers, and the strength of his hands on me—and I was getting desperate.
“Have you ever considered swinging?” she suggested, and I nearly fell off my chair. A southern Florida coffee shop seemed like the last place to have this kind of discussion and with a stranger, no less, but she didn’t look like a social deviant. In fact, she looked normal. Average in height, dark brunette hair, the body of someone still youthful, with friendly eyes, and a wedding band.
“Never thought of it,” I said after choking on my tea.
She paused for a moment as if she were assessing me and then added, “Not everyone who swings is married. Some are in relationships, and some are single. People participate in all manner of combinations. Couples who want a third party or a single participant looking for a couple who shares. Sometimes, it’s just a mutual agreement between three, but the term comes more so from those looking to experiment within a relationship.”
I stare down at my paper placemat, uncertain how to respond. It sounded crazy and a bit obscene, but I wasn’t one to judge. I was jealous, in a way. Maybe if Stan and I had experimented more or been a bit more adventurous, things wouldn’t have gotten to the point where they ended. Especially with him in the bed of his secretary.
“Here’s my name,” she said, offering it on a paper napkin along with a phone number. “If you have any questions. Otherwise, I’d recommend contacting this number. He’s a doctor.” She winked after handing me the napkin, and I took it, smiling good-naturedly even though I knew I’d never call.
However, the numbers haunted me, and a week later, when I was cleaning out the old receipts in my purse, the napkin remained intact with her perfect script and two phone numbers, the second marked with an asterisk.
“Dr. Lubton’s office,” a masculine voice answers on the second ring, and the professional confidence in his voice surprises me.
“I…I’m looking for the doctor.” I swallow back the sudden stutter. “Jessica DeMarco suggested I call.”
A heavy pause of silence weighs through the phone for a second, and I wonder if I’ve lost the connection. “Hello?”
“Were you looking for a full exam?” he questions, and I remember Jessica mentioning to request such a thing. I nod, and then recall he can’t see me.
“Yes.”
“And will your husband be joining you?” I blink down at the napkin, pinched between my fingers.
“I don’t have a husband.” Silence falls again, and after another weighted second, I ask, “Do I need one?”
A soft chuckle fills the line, reassuring instead of mocking. “No.” Pause. “But may I ask if this will be your first exam of this sort?”
Closing my eyes, I think, What am I doing? I’m no longer certain, and not certain how to answer, so I go with the truth. “Yes.”
“I see, and for the purposes of an initial consultation, would you prefer an assistant be in the room?”
Did I want someone else present? A witness to my humiliation? Again, I wasn’t certain what exactly I was getting myself into, any more than I knew how to answer the question. Deciding that embarrassing myself in my lack of knowledge should best be done alone, I reply, “I think I’ll be okay without one.”
“Very well.” There wasn’t a hint of a smile or frown in his tone, but the continued smoothness of a true doctor. Good bedside manner. I want to laugh out loud at the pun. Instead, I wait for his instructions on how to proceed.
“I have an eleven o’clock on Thursday open.” It’s strange to consider he does this more than one time a day with more than one person, possibly more than one person at a time, and I realize I’m at great risk of making a fool of myself. Not to mention, can I muster my libido midmorning on a weekday? Remain open-minded, I remind myself. He called it a consultation. Maybe he really is a doctor. Maybe we only discuss options. Maybe he can explain what’s happening to me at forty-five as a single woman, previously married, and desperately seeking pleasure.
“Thursday would be fine,” I say, knowing my calendar is flexible. I’m a real estate agent. The southern Florida market ebbs and flows based on weather predictions and the hurricane season. I’m mildly successful but wish I was doing better. Older people are a key to my accomplishments, and I fear one day I’ll be classified as one of them. Old.
“Please dress comfortably and be prepared to sign a consent form.” The instructions surprise me, and once again, I nod. “I look forward to meeting you.”

So I talk the talk and go to rehab. I plan to breeze through, get sprung in 30 days or less and hit the road with my new team, the Chicago Blaze. All I have to do is charm my attractive, uptight rehab group leader into thinking I’ve changed—how hard could it be?

 Graysen

A Secret for A Secret ~ Helena Hunting ~ Cover Reveal

A Secret for a Secret, an all-new forbidden standalone hockey romance from New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting is coming May 12th, and we have the sexy new cover!

From New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting comes a new romance about trading secrets, breaking the rules, and playing for keeps.

Hunting-A Secret for a Secret-28672-PB-FT
My name is Ryan Kingston, and I’m a rule follower. I’ve never been in a fistfight. I always obey the speed limit. I don’t get drunk, and I definitely don’t pick up random women at bars.
Except the night I found out that my whole existence has been a lie.
I got drunk. And picked up a stranger.
Her name was Queenie, and she was everything I’m not: reckless, impulsive, and chaotic. We did shots and traded secrets. And ended up naked at my place.
She left me a thank-you note in the morning and her panties as a parting gift. But no way to contact her.
Six weeks later I’m sitting in the first official team meeting of the season, and there she is. I neglected to mention that I’m the goalie for Seattle’s NHL team.
And Queenie? Turns out she’s the general manager’s daughter.

Meg and JoMeg and Jo by Virginia Kantra

3.5 stars - Worth A Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

Meg and Jo took a little bit for me to get into, but once I did, I found myself enjoying and relating to the sisters.

Ms Kantra does and excellent job of letting us see into the lives of both the oldest March sisters as they work to support their Mother through a health crisis and find their happy.

I appreciated the hard look at marriage, motherhood, and evolving dreams that we saw from different points of view. Struggles, the need for communication, and a good support network come through very clearly.

This well written story may start slowly, but it picks up and pulls the reader in. The overall feeling of the book is one of warmth and family.

The Resistance (Hard to Resist, #1)The Resistance by S.L. Scott

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Copy Purchased

S L Scott is an author I discovered several years ago and have consistently enjoyed. One recent series, featuring the Crow brothers, also had secondary characters from a band called the Resistance. I decided to finally dive in and meet the people behind the secondary characters.

The Resistance focuses on front man Jack Dalton/Johnny Outlaw and entrepreneur, Holli. I liked both characters and enjoyed getting to know them. Two things I especially appreciated about the story were 1) how these two met, the idea that Dalton/Johnny knew from the beginning why Holli was there and 2) the way Holli stood her ground and fought for what she needed when push came to shove.

One place I struggled a little bit comes from the fact that while this story is well written and emotional, it also highlighted for me just how much Ms Scott has honed her writing craft of the last several years. Holli and Dalton/Johnny didn’t have the full range of character development that I have come to expect from reading some of the more recent works. The best way to describe it would be like flipping through pictures of high school seniors and finding a freshman in the mix.

Having said that - I am still thrilled to have met these character and started in the journey with them. I will be diving into the second book of the series soon.

Amazon

The Reckoning (Hard to Resist, #2)The Reckoning by S.L. Scott

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

I ended up having a bit of a love/hate relationship with The Reckoning. This book picks up right where we left Holli and Dalton/Outlaw in The Resistance and begin to see what happens after the Happily Ever After.

What I loved - getting to see what happens after a fairly whirlwind romance between two strong willed people.

What I struggled with - The drama, oh the drama..... There were multiple times that I wanted to take both characters and crack their heads together because they were both being so stubborn!

As much as I struggled with the drama level, because it flirted with my "over the top meter" I also appreciated the fact that this was probably a pretty accurate representation of what happens when one (or both) people in a relationship have a high profile. The situations also played into the fact that while these two characters loved each other, they didn't necessarily know each other very well before thrusting the most important of relationships into the meat grinder of celebrity.

As a reader, I wish I had spaced out reading The Resistance and The Reckoning. They are companion books, but I think I might have enjoyed The Reckoning a bit more if the emotional ride of The Resistance had time to settle a bit more. I am definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Bait: Alpha Billionaire Romance Boxed SetBait: Alpha Billionaire Romance Boxed Set by Colleen Charles

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Free Read

I really don’t know where to start here. This collection/trilogy was kind of like an accident on the highway, I knew I needed to give up and move on, but I had to see if it could get worse.

There is almost no character development and the plot consists of one extreme event after another with very little connecting the events. Charlie and Nolan both end up looking like fools who can’t figure out which way is up.

I picked the set up from the blurb- it sounded like an interesting enemies to lovers/fake romance story. I think more effort went into crafting the blurb than writing some parts of the book. There are a few redeeming sections, but they are strung together with so much nonsensical filler that they get lost. Add it plot inconsistencies and it was hard to enjoy this book.

The sad part is, the story has potential. A little rearranging and a good copy editor could take this from disorganized train wreck to entertaining.

Wait for Me by Tia Louise ~ New Release and Review

Dear Taron,
I should have told you this before...

Dear Taron,
Is there a time-limit on
forgiveness?
If there is, I haven't reached it...

Dear Taron,
I still love you...

Taron Rhodes was my brother’s best friend.

He was sexy as sin.
But he was more than that…
He was ponytail-pulling, ice down your shirt teasing, throw you in the lake screaming…
Strong, tanned arms and bright green eyes over a heart-stopping, naughty grin…
Did I mention his tight end?
I gave him my first real kiss, my heart, my everything.
I said I’d wait for him…

I’m still waiting, because Taron Rhodes is still the man of my dreams,
And I have a secret that has his bright green eyes.

Noel LaGrange stole my heart when she was only eighteen—pushing me off a flatbed and calling me a city slicker.
Her brother Sawyer would kick my ass if he knew how many times we made out that summer, how close we got.

Everything changed when Sawyer and I joined the military.
We were honorably discharged, but I didn’t go to her.
Instead, I went back to the city… where no amount of money, no amount of pills can heal this wound.
Only her whiskey eyes and dark hair, her slim arms and her sweet scent, give me hope.
I broke her heart just as surely as I broke mine, but I’m going back to make it right.
If she’s still waiting…

(WAIT FOR ME is a STAND-ALONE small-town, second-chance romance with a guaranteed HEA. No cheating. No cliffhangers.)

Elizabeth's Review

4.5 stars - One of The Best

Review Copy Provided by Author

Ever since reading Boss of Me, I’ve been curious about the rest of the men Patton served with in the Marines. Marley and Taron were secondary characters in that story. In Wait for Me, we get to meet a young Taron and the fourth of the group, Sawyer.

After getting to know preset day Taron a little bit in Boss of Me, it was a pleasure to get to spend time with him as a young Marine just getting started in life. I enjoyed watching him meet and fall in love with his best friend’s sister, even knowing how things(at least temporarily) were going to work out.

Noel, both past and present, was a breath of fresh air. She was a strong character who had survived and managed to thrive. I appreciated how she pushed for what she wanted and pulled herself up by the boot straps when push came to shove.

Second chance stories can be tricky. There is a fine balance of dealing with the past while trying to move forward and Tia Louise walked that line as close to perfect as I’ve seen in a while. Taron and Noel both handled their reunion and the surprises that came with it gracefully. It made me root for them to find a happy ending.

Wait for Me is strongly tied to Boss of Me, but is very much a stand alone. There are a few references that may not make sense to someone just joining the series, but they are fairly minor. I am very excited to see what is in store for Sawyer when we get to read his story in 2020.

Tia Louise is the USA Today bestselling, award-winning author of When We Touch, the “Bright Lights,” “One to Hold,” and “Dirty Players” series, and co-author of the #4 Amazon bestseller The Last Guy.
After being a teacher, a book editor, a journalist, and finally a magazine editor, she started writing love stories and never stopped.
Louise lives in the Midwest with her trophy husband, two teenage geniuses, and one grumpy cat.

Bulletproof ~ Samatha Harris ~ Cover Reveal

BULLETPROOF

Author: Samatha Harris
Designer: T.E. Black with T.E. Black Designs
Release Date: January 14, 2020
Genre: Contemporary/Suspense Romance
When Manhattan chef, Jake Maxwell, walks into the Rock Bottom Bar and Grill, he’s hit with an overwhelming sense of belonging. It’s not the place that feels like home, but rather, the bombshell behind the bar armed with a quick wit and a fresh sharpie.

Ashlynn Hicks is fighting to keep a roof over her family’s head, even though her father’s addictions threaten to tear it all down. She knows better than to fall for the city boy’s charm, but something in his eyes provokes a dangerous feeling of hope.

Hope isn’t real, not for girls like her. It’s fleeting and leads to nothing except disappointment and heartache. Still, the pair is drawn together despite the ghosts of their pasts threatening to tear them apart or the devastation that leaves them staring down the barrel of a gun.

When shots are fired, they find out that while separate, they may be broken; together, they are bulletproof.

Samatha “Sam” Harris lives near Baltimore, Maryland with her husband David and daughter Ava. Born in Florida, she migrated north which most people agree was a little backwards. She has been an artist all of her life, a Tattoo Artist for more than ten years, and a storyteller since she was a kid.

Sam has a slightly unhealthy love for Frank Sinatra, classic movies, and Jazz and Blues music, but her first love will always be reading. From Romance, to Thrillers, to Historical Fiction and everything in between, she loves to become a part of the story. As a writer she tells the stories that she would want to read.
