My name is Toni Aleo and I’m a total dork.
I am a wife, mother of two and a bulldog, and also a hopeless romantic.
I am the biggest Shea Weber fan ever, and can be found during hockey season with my nose pressed against the Bridgestone Arena’s glass, watching my Nashville Predators play!
When my nose isn’t pressed against the glass, I enjoy going to my husband and son’s hockey games, my daughter’s dance competition, hanging with my best friends, taking pictures, scrapbooking, and reading the latest romance novel.
I have a slight Disney and Harry Potter obsession, I love things that sparkle, I love the color pink, I might have been a Disney Princess in a past life… probably Belle.
… and did I mention I love hockey?

The Duke I Once Knew (Unlikely Duchesses, #1)The Duke I Once Knew by Olivia Drake

3,5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy provided by Publisher via Net Galley

Releases December 31, 2018

This was a bit of a slow started for me, but the further I got into it the more I enjoyed it.
Abby and Max were teenage sweethearts separated by life and misunderstandings. Fast forward 15 years and we see Abby struggling to find her place in a world where 30 is “on the shelf” and Max is going through the motions.
Once we got past some of the set up and were able to see Abby and Max really interact, I found myself really enjoying them. Abby was easy to like, even when I felt badly for the situation she was in. I also really like the dichotomy of her character. Biddable and pleasing in on hard, but strong willed and independent on the other.
Max was a little harder to get a feel for, but his evolution was one that I found appealing. It was easy to see that his emotional growth had stunted in his mid teens. I would have appreciated seeing a little bit more of his actual journey to embrace the changes in his life vs the idea of the changes being a fait d accompli after the fact.
Overall this was a fun book that is worth the effort to get to know. I did struggle a little with the neat and tidy bow that everything was tied up in, especially after such a long time apart and the very different ways their lives had developed.
The characters are interesting and I would be curious to see what happens to Max’s extended group of friends.

A Newer Release...

Eat, Drink and Be . . . MarriedEat, Drink and Be . . . Married by Faith Andrews

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would recommend to a Friend

I initially read this as part of a kindle world and was thrilled to read the expanded version.
This is a quick and entertaining read about instant attraction, standing up for yourself, and finding where you fit.
Due to length, we don’t get to know any of the characters very well, but Jude and Lelia are both a lot of fun. The small supporting cast is entertaining and adds humor and life lessons along the way too.
If you are looking for a quick break, this would be a good holiday read to escape with.

I've also been diving into my TBR pile....

A Crane Family Christmas (Billionaire Bad Boys Book 4)A Crane Family Christmas by Jessica Lemmon

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A Author Freebie

This was a cute holiday freebie from the Billionaire Bad Boy series.
It's an enjoyable catch up to the characters we've met and had so much fun with previously. If you have not read the series, then this will not make sense.

A Kiss For The Cameras (The Hollywood Showmance Chronicles #1)A Kiss For The Cameras by Olivia Jaymes

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This was a cute read. It was a bit of a slow start, but became more entertaining the more I read.
I enjoyed that our heroine was a successful author working to take control of how her works were presented to the world.
Given the set up for the book, it felt like the author missed a chance for potential conflict. The idea of a "showmance" is in the title, but isn't really talked about for most of the book. While I enjoyed the story, it just felt a little disconnected from the title and the set up.

Amazon

Adam (Riding Hard, #1)Adam by Jennifer Ashley

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Free on Kindle

This was a quick, entertaining read that I felt had a lot of untapped potential.
Adam and Bailey had a fling in high school. Fast forward 10 years and they are both back in their home town licking wounds and working to move forward with their respective lives with Bailey working on his family’s ranch.
I liked both Adam and Bailey and I liked the set up for this story. My complaint is that we didn’t get to see enough of just them to really buy the idea of a “right person, wrong time” reconnection. This is the first book in a new series and there was so much focus on world building and introducing future plot lines, that this book’s couple got lost in the shuffle. I wanted more Bailey/Adam and less of the secondary characters or more book to even things out.
This was a free read from a new to me author. While I enjoyed Adam, I’m not sure I liked it enough to continue with the series.

A Thousand Letters (Austen, #2)A Thousand Letters by Staci Hart

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

I’m not really sure where to start here.....
I love the set up of this book. High school sweethearts, he joins the Army, a misunderstanding, and 7 years go by before circumstances bring them back together.
I liked Elliot and Wade separately and I appreciated the emotional struggles they were dealing with.
But, I struggled some with the execution of the story. I didn’t get the need for the Cinderella-like relationship between Elliot and her family (is this my lack of extensive Austen reading coming through?) and felt like it added a layer of complication to an already fraught story. Wade’s grand gesture - while incredibly romantic- also felt like a little too little given the yo yo he’d been with Elliot. I get why she responded the way she did, but would have liked to have seen more of the “what next” vs a neat tie up and conclusion.
If you are looking for a light read - this isn’t it. The emotion of the story pours off the page. While there is a HEA, it’s hard to get there. Both main characters have a lot of emotional maturing to do and they seem to come across as better for it, but it is not an easy road. This is definitely a book worth reading, but it does need a bit of a “caution” sticker.

Milk Man ~ Shari J Ryan ~ Cover Reveal

Release Date: January 17, 2019
Cover Design: MadHat Books

Synopsis

Everything in life was going perfectly, but then my luck expired.
It all started when I got a new job, which came with a new guy. That’s when I managed to cause an unforeseeable disaster, which took down an entire company in less than a week. The new job, the new guy and a big mouth led to another giant mistake. Then, one more for good measure. Flash forward a couple of weeks, and ... I’ve got milk ... because I’m dating the milkman, and yes, milk did his body good. Not only do milkmen still exist, but I’ve come to learn that some women hire a milkman to deliver more than just milk. I’m not the sharing type, but I also don’t like to cry over spilled—you get my point. So, I can either have a cow or search for greener pastures. Depending on my decision, though, I need to ask myself if I’m prepared to tell my future children that their father is, in fact, the milkman.

Excerpt

I make it through the front doors and hop into the elevator, thankful I escaped the madness, unscathed, even if it’s just for today. These kinds of days that feel like forty-eight hours long will eventually give me premature gray hairs, and I didn’t sign up for that deal.
With my phone in hand, I type out a quick message to Layla.
Me: Vino? Is there any in the kitchen and is there enough to cure a bad day?
Layla: Hold, please.
Cue the Jeopardy music as she stops to taste test whatever we have.
Layla: Three bottles—should be enough, but that depends on how bad your day was.
As much as I like the idea of forgetting about my day while guzzling wine, I can’t get blitzed on a work night. Unlike Layla, I can only handle a few glasses, or I’ll wake up with a horrendous hangover. Layla just stays awake all night, and the hangover never hits her. I’m beginning to wonder if that’s key to drinking responsibly.
I would respond to Layla’s text, but my phone is about to end up on the pavement as a hand grabs my elbow from behind.
Not tonight of all nights; I can’t take any more today. “Stop, asshole! I have pepper spray!” Does yelling this phrase really work? From what I can see, none of the other pedestrians bother to look over.
The problem is, I do not own pepper spray, but I’m hoping whoever has a hold of me will let go in fear of getting sprayed by my invisible weapon.
“Is the pepper spray inside your phone or your empty water bottle?” he asks. That voice—I recognize his damn voice, so I drop my arms and release my nut-kicking stance that wouldn’t have done much to the assumed perpetrator behind my back. I’m slow to turn around, feeling not-so-eager to face the idiot who thought it would be smart to grab my arm while I’m alone on a city street.
“You,” I growl.
“Me.”
“What do you want? Oh, and you’re welcome for not attacking you. Don’t grab people from behind.”
“I didn’t mean to scare you. I was yelling your name, but I guess you didn’t hear me.”
“Nope, no I didn’t.”
“Okay, well now that I have your attention, can I ask you for some help?” He has my attention for multiple reasons at the moment, and I’m not sure which one requires help.
“It’s tempting, but I’m pretty sure I can’t help you,” I tell him while scratching the skin beneath my nose.
“Look, I’m in a lot of trouble with this campaign, and if it leaks anywhere, my career is over.”
“I’m sure someone will overlook your troubles to drool at your beautiful features,” I tell him, unfazed by his plea and reason.
Wesley rolls his eyes and stares up toward the darkening sky. The silence lasts longer than a natural pause, so I consider walking away, but one stupid part of me is itching to find out what he will say next. I’d also like to tell him he looks like an idiot, but I’ll hang onto that confession for a bit longer.
“My attorney is working on a retraction, but that guy you work for seems like a real dick,” he says.
“I wouldn’t go with the word ‘real,’ but he is a dick, yeah.”
“When did you start working—” A bus speeds by, drowning his words in the rumble. “How long—” Another bus.
I check my watch, for no real reason other than to be a jerk to the jerk who was a jerk to me earlier. A stereotype might dictate that certain types of models appear like they never have time for anything, but I don’t like to assume anyone is part of a type, so I will try not to judge at this moment. Although, I imagine when Wesley Moon needs something, he probably thinks everyone should stop what they are doing and help. He had a confident strut when he walked in this morning, and then he was snippy, but I wasn’t helping much.
“I didn’t hear what you said,” I tell him.
“Can I buy you a quick drink so we can go somewhere quieter?”
I glance at my watch again. I’m a busy woman, and there are bottles of wine waiting for me at home. Pursing my lips to the side, I look back up, finding distress in his eyes and stress lines parting his forehead—that can’t be good for a pretty face. My God. Why do I become soft around needy men? It’s like I have a gift for attracting this type of man. Except, these men seem to need attention when in reality they only want to gain full control, which then causes me to feel needy. “I don’t know. I should get home.”
“Sure, yeah, I understand,” he says. “Thanks for the heads up today. I’ll be more careful when the next job comes up.” He’s giving me puppy dog eyes—he can’t be serious. Did his pupils just get bigger too, or is that my imagination?
No, I don’t need this in my life.
I am happy without drama.
I am happy with nothing but my career.
No, no, I’m not. I’m bored, and I’m lonely, and my roommate is my only friend, and she’s not the greatest.
“Wow, you’re really milking this situation for sympathy, huh? Fine, one drink, then I have to get home to my couch—the poor thing has been alone and waiting for me all day. I need to feed and warm it up.”
“First, I’m not ‘milking’ anything, but thanks for the jab. Second, I don’t want to keep you from your—ah—couch, which is why I simply said, ‘I understand.’” Wesley raises a brow as if he needs to appear confused by my statements, but I know better. I’m familiar with the game.
“Yeah, that’s all you said out loud, but it’s apparent you are well versed in talking with your expressions too. Let’s go, pretty boy.” The poor guy has no clue how much worse his day can get.
He sighs but doesn’t argue as he places his hand on the small of my back to lead the way toward wherever he has in mind.
“The place over there,” he points to the corner of the next block, “is quiet until the later hours, and it’s close by so I won’t need to keep you from your couch for too long.”
“Good. I like quiet. I can rest knowing the staff will hear you scream if I need to use my pepper spray.”
He doesn’t respond, but I’m sure he “fears” me like most men do when I use my threats.
We enter a small, modern looking bar with empty booths and plenty of free stools at the bar-top.
“Sit wherever you’d like,” the man behind the bar says.
I take the lead and sit in front of the bartender, and Wesley takes the seat beside me. “What can I get you to drink?” Wesley asks.
If he’s buying, I’ll skip the wine. “Captain and Coke,” I tell him. “Oh, and with a cherry, please.”
“Two Captain and Cokes, hers with a cherry,” Wesley tells the bartender, who stares at us curiously for a long second before walking away.
“What did you need to ask me?” I cut to the chase while helping myself to two cardboard coasters from behind the bar. I slide one over to Wesley and place the other in front of me.
“How long have you worked at Virtual Generation?” he asks.
I sigh and look up at the ceiling, using my fingers to count. “Three full days.”
“Shit,” he says. “I didn’t realize you were that new.”
“Yup, and so far it’s the most amazing job I’ve ever had.”
Wesley shakes his head runs his hand down the side of his face. “If that’s the case, you may want to consider a career change.”
“Already on it,” I tell him.
A couple minutes of silence isn’t awkward like I would have expected, and Wesley seems more down to earth than I gave him credit for earlier even if my speculation is due on his apparent interest in the game on TV.
The bartender places our drinks down and drops a cocktail straw in each of our glasses, giving Wesley a sidelong glance.
“Why wouldn’t you read the fine print on the contract?” I ask Wesley, pulling his attention away from the TV.
“The milk thing has gotten so old, I figured it was a boilerplate type of contract for another milk distributor. It never crossed my mind that someone would want to use me of all people for a breast milk ad.” I don’t know why, but I find it attractive that he’s speaking about the subject maturely after witnessing the behavior from the other men in the office.
“Do you think it’s because you have a nice set of man boobs?” I lift my glass and push the straw to the side to take a quick sip. My question might need a moment to soak in, anyway.
“Wow, you’re not quitting today, are you?”
“I’m just saying ... when you’re a model, you do things you don’t always agree with, right?”
“How does that relate to man boobs?”
“It doesn't. I was just stating a fact.”
“You’re a funny one,” he groans before downing half his glass.
“Yeah, but I’m not the one walking around with a permanent looking milk mustache.”
Wesley drops his glass and covers his mouth, realizing he never cleaned that crap off his face, which has probably dried like cement over the last few hours. I’ve been trying my best not to laugh or make a face at him for the past twenty minutes, but it was my way of paying him back for scaring the shit out of me on the street. However it occurs to me, he must be so self-centered that he probably figured people were staring at him because of his good looks, rather than the fact that he’s sporting a sweet milk mustache. That’s cute and sad. “I’ll be right back,” he says.

MacKenzie Decker was a question Avery never got to ask, much less answer.
They met when she was a young reporter fueled by ambition, and the ink on Deck's first NBA contract was barely dry. Years later, they've climbed so high and lost so much, but one thing hasn't changed. The attraction that simmered between them in a locker room before is still there. With success like theirs, everything has been possible . . .
except them.
But that was then.

Excerpt:
Soft and fresh like petals. I’m a jock. Not a dumb one, but a jock nonetheless. I don’t describe a woman’s lips as soft and fresh or compare a kiss to flowers. Besides the few years I was married to Tara, if it opened its legs and said yes or please, I fucked it. I always rushed it. A man’s got needs, but I got in and I got out. This woman, this kiss, I have to savor. I’d be a fool not to. It’s a first kiss. I understand the difference now between the first time you kiss someone, and a first kiss. This is a discovery of tongues and lips and heat. An introduction of our souls, if that doesn’t sound too pussy-ish. It’s how I feel, though. Like as our lips brush back and forth, as our tongues tangle, as I taste her, mouthful by delicious mouthful, I’m learning her secrets. I’m telling her mine. My hand slides from the door to flatten into the warmth of her back through the silk blouse, bringing her incrementally closer. The air shifts and takes the shape of lust; assumes the form of want. The sound of her moaning, the slight lift and fall of her breasts against my chest, testifies that she feels it, too. The elevator dings, and our bodies go still even as we keep exchanging breaths and heartbeats through our clothes; even though my mouth is still poised above hers. I have her against the door, and every curve of her body is impressing itself on me, making sure I’ll never forget how right we fit together. I look over my shoulder toward the elevator. The doors open, but no one gets off. That interruption was enough to bring her back to her senses, though. God knows I can’t find mine. “Um . . . you should go,” she whispers, a muscle rippling along the smooth line of her jaw. I bend to breathe over her mouth, so she can taste our kisses lingering on my lips. “Or you could invite me in.” Her scent and the warmth of her body take my senses hostage. I smell her and want to kiss her again so badly it stings my taste buds. Her eyes already regret the last few moments I thought were so perfect. I can’t calm my emotions or my body that quickly. “You don’t want to come in, Deck.” “I assure you I do.” A short laugh, deceptively light, breezes past her lips. She glances down to the floor and shakes her head. “I’d make the worst one-night stand ever,” she says. “One-night stand?” I take her chin in hand and lift, forcing her to look at me. “I’ve waited a long time for this path to be clear. No conflict of interest. No other people standing in our way. I don’t know exactly what I want, Avery, but it’s damn sure more than one night.”

Elizabeth's Review

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Review Copy Provided by Author

This is a novella that I originally read as part of the Team Player anthology was was glad to get to revisit here!
Full Court Press is a prequel of shorts to the Hoops series as it helps position characters and provide background that will be useful when reading the full series, but this stands alone very well.
In true Kennedy fashion, Avery is a strong heroine and it’s easy to like and respect her. Slightly more mature Deck is also easy to like. I appreciated the relationship give and take these two are dealing with and the emotional hurdles that have to be addressed.
There is a lot packed into this little book, but it’s definitely well worth the read. (Oh and I really hope we see more of Avery and Decker at some point!)

KRHoopsHolidayBookCover5x8_HIGH.jpg
MacKenzie Decker was a question Avery never got to ask, much less answer.
They met when she was a young reporter fueled by ambition, and the ink on Deck's first NBA contract was barely dry. Years later, they've climbed so high and lost so much, but one thing hasn't changed. The attraction that simmered between them in a locker room before is still there. With success like theirs, everything has been possible . . .
except them.
But that was then.
The only question is...what about now?

Elizabeth's Review

Bad ReputationBad Reputation by S.L. Scott

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Copy Purchased

After reading Everest, I really wanted more from this “world” created by S.L Scott. She delivered with Bad Reputation!
Hutton (one of the Everest brothers) and Ally are an interesting couple from the beginning. There is instant attraction, long distance, ambiguity about relationship status and more all before 1/3 of the way through the book!
I liked Hutton from the get go, but it took me longer to feel like I knew Ally and what was going on with her. Some of that is intentional by Ms Scott and you’ll find out why when you read the book 😉
As I got to know Ally, I liked her just as much as Hutton and found myself rooting for her and them to find their happy.
One of my favorite things about this book is that the true conflict came from outside of Hutton and Ally’s relationship. Dealing with this adversity seemed to be a key to their growth, especially for Ally. I also appreciated that there was a bit of a role reversal, but that it was done in such a way that Hutton remained his Alpha/macho self.
The supporting cast here is small, but all of the players are important. I am hoping to see a 3rd Everest brother book soon, but would love to know what happens with Ally’s siblings as well. If you have read other works by Ms Scott recently, you will recognize a few cameo players that pop in as well.
Overall, this is definitely a book to grab!

My Favorite Half-Night StandMy Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

Don't let the title of this one fool you! This is an excellent friends to lovers story with a good dose of comedy and a little "how did they think that was a good idea?" Our story focuses on Millie and Reid with heavy support from their group of friends.
Millie and Reid are characters that I liked. They are a little quirky, a little flawed, and a perfect for each other even if they don't realize it. I appreciated that their relationship started in a deep friendship and the changes were like flickering light bulbs for both of them. The pitfalls of navigating a change from friends to more while also existing within a larger group was very present and felt very real.
While this is a couple story and told in dual POV, I felt like more of the focus was on Millie and how her changing relationship with Reid (and the related hi-jinks) were a catalyst for her emotional evolution. It was refreshing to see the male lead be the naturally more emotive character and have the female lead struggle with this facet of her personality and the need to "be a grown up."
My Favorite Half-Night Stand was a fun and entertaining take on dating in your 30's, dating within a group of friends, and learning to be the best version of yourself. The very active secondary cast has me curious and I would love to see what happens to them also - maybe we can cross our fingers that this will be the beginning of a series?
