3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review copy provided by authors

I'm going to be honest here and tell you that I am still reading the anthology - as of now I am about 40% through and I have enjoyed what I have read. Of what I have read so far, I would say that some of the stories fall into various stages of complete. There have been a couple of chapters with no context, pieces that are teasers for full length books to come, and complete short stories.

Some of the pieces are dark, some are hopeful, but all have the underlying message of moving forward. Anthologies like this - are almost auto buys for me. For starters, there are authors I love in here. Then there is the fact that proceeds go to a worthy cause, but this is also a good way to meet authors whose work I might have read otherwise.

I'm am very much looking forward to what the other pieces of the anthology have to say.

Sex, Not Love ~ Vi Keeland ~ Sneak Peek

My relationship with Hunter Delucia started backwards. We met at a wedding—him sitting on the groom’s side, me sitting on the bride’s. Stealing glances at each other throughout the night, there was no denying an intense, mutual attraction. I caught the bouquet; he caught the garter. Hunter held me tightly while we danced and suggested we explore the chemistry sparking between us. His blunt, dirty mouth should’ve turned me off. But for some crazy reason, it had the opposite effect on me. We ended up back in my hotel room. The next morning, I headed home to New York leaving him behind in California with the wrong number. I thought about him often, but after my last relationship, I’d sworn off of charming, cocky, gorgeous-as-sin men. A year later, Hunter and I met again at the birth of our friends’ baby. Our attraction hadn't dulled one bit. After a whirlwind trip, he demanded a real phone number this time. So I left him with my mother’s—she could scare away any man with her talks of babies and marriage—and flew back home. I’d thought it was funny, until the following week when he rang the bell at Mom’s house for Sunday night dinner. The crazy, gorgeous man had won over my mother and taken an eight-week assignment in my city. He proposed we spend that time screwing each other out of our systems. Eight weeks of mind-blowing sex with no strings attached? What did I have to lose? Nothing, I thought. It’s just sex, not love. But you know what they say about the best laid plans…   ADD TO GOODREADS

“You’re not going anywhere before you do two things.” “Two things?” “Leave your number and kiss me goodbye.” “I…I…you haven’t brushed your teeth.” Hunter chuckled. It felt like he could see through all of my bullshit. Reaching over to the nightstand, he grabbed his phone and held it out to me before getting up. “Toothpaste in the bathroom still?” “The little one the hotel sets out.” “I’ll brush. You type.” While he was in the bathroom, I mulled over not typing anything into his phone. There was no way I was keeping in touch with a man living three-thousand miles away. A guy like him was the last thing I needed. But then I thought better of just telling him I’d put my number in. He seemed to have figured me out pretty quick. So instead, I typed my name and number, only I changed the last two digits. And it was a good thing I did, because when Hunter returned from his bathroom trip, the first thing he did was check that I’d entered something. Luckily, he didn’t attempt to call me. Satisfied, he tossed his phone on the bed and nodded. “Thank you. Now kiss me.” I could see he wasn’t going to let me leave without this. So, sacrificing to make my plane, I pushed up on my toes and delivered a quick peck to his lips. Mmm.... Nice and soft. (And minty fresh.) “Well…it was nice to meet you.” I turned to dart out the door, but Hunter grabbed my wrist yet again. “I said kiss me.” “I did!” “Kiss me the way you kissed me last night.” Before I could even attempt to let that sink in, Hunter yanked me against him. One of his large hands cupped the back of my neck, and he squeezed firmly to direct my head where he wanted it. Then, his lips crashed down on mine. The shock of feeling his mouth against mine quickly dissipated as he licked my lips, encouraging me to open for him. His tongue dipped inside, and he groaned as he tilted my head and deepened the kiss. The vibration of the sound traveled between us and sent a hum through my body. Soft and gentle went out the window after that. He grabbed a fistful of my ass, and I lifted my body up onto his, wrapping my legs around his waist. As he backed us to the wall, a sense of familiarity overcame me. I couldn’t remember the specifics of our previous kiss, but I now knew deep inside what it had felt like. My cell dropped from my hand so my fingers could tangle in his hair. Yanking on the soft strands, I couldn’t get enough. A moan from deep inside my chest moved through our connected mouths. Hunter pushed harder, his thick erection pressing into the center of my open legs. He rocked as he kissed me, causing a friction through two layers of clothing that was leading me to a place I didn’t think it was possible to go fully dressed. It felt like he wanted to swallow me whole, and in that moment, I would have let him. My breasts were crushed to his chest, and a heartbeat raged out of control—only I wasn’t sure if it was my own or his. Jesus, where does a man learn to kiss like this? I was breathless and stunned when our kiss broke. Hunter sucked on my bottom lip, tugging it before releasing my mouth. His voice was strained. “Change your flight. We’re not done here.” I swallowed, trying to gain some composure. “I can’t.” My voice was barely a whisper. It was all I could muster. “Can’t or don’t want to?”             Vi Keeland is a #1 New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal Bestselling author. Something So Irresistible by Natasha Madison ~ Blog Tour

Max Horton

They call me an outcast like it's a bad thing.

An asshole byproduct of a shitty upbringing. I don't care about anything except myself and my little sister.

I will always protect what’s mine.

With one year left on my hockey contract I'm keeping my head down and my eyes on the goal.

A collision, with her, changes my entire existence.

Allison Grant

Never fall in love with a sports star. That's what my stepfather always said. He told me athletes are complicated and moody—that the higher their paycheck, the lower their morals.

As public relations for the New York Stingers I know exactly what he means, but I can’t seem to say no to a friendship with one beautiful, damaged man.

What started out as hate turned into something else.

We tried to stay away, to keep our distance, but the pull was too strong.

Something forbidden turned into something so irresistible.
“You may now kiss the bride,” Judge Reynolds says right before Max grabs my face in both of his hands.

“I love you,” he whispers, then his lips land on mine, gently and full of love.

My hands go to his waist as I close my eyes and take in the safety of my husband.

“I love you with everything that I am,” he murmurs against my lips. I smile and look into his crystal blue eyes.

“I love you more,” I say. He lets go of my face and we shake the judge’s hand. He grabs my hand and we walk out of his chambers while my chiffon train trails us.

Max proposed to me three hours ago. He got down on one knee and vowed to love me and only me till his last dying breath while I stood there in the middle of the shark reef in the Mandalay Bay. It took me two seconds before I nodded and got down on my knees with him, buried my face into his chest, and cried from happiness. I was completely and utterly in love with him. And not one person in my family knew. Well, none of the men knew. But this isn’t about them. This is about me, about Max, about how he took my heart into his hand and treated it like delicate crystal, making sure he bubble wrapped it to keep it safe.

Now here I am, watching my husband dressed in a black tux hold my hand and me in my two-piece lace dress. It is beaded from my collar all the way down. It ties around my neck but leaves my back bare. My arms are also bare. A gold belt ties the second part of the dress, floor-length split chiffon. My legs slip out while I walk, showing off my something blue, which is my Carrie Bradshaw Blue Manolo Blahnik.

As soon as the door to the chapel opens, my chiffon dress blows up almost like Marilyn Monroe’s, the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas almost non-existent since we are off the Strip. Someone in the distance must have snapped a picture because his flash went off.

“I think someone just took a picture of us,” I tell him while we make our way to the car that is waiting for us.

“Angel, it’s Vegas, everyone is taking pictures.” He waits for me to get in before climbing in after me. “So, my wife, where do you want to go?” Max turns to me and smiles while his thumb rubs the hand he’s holding.

“Back to our room.” I look at our hands. “I want to go back with you and lock the door and just be with my husband.”

“I was hoping you’d say that.” He pulls me to him, his arm going around my shoulder, and I fit perfectly in the crook of his arm.

We watch the city lights come into focus again once we get on the Strip. Walking through the lobby, I hold on to my husband’s hand, watching his ring glisten in the light. Max unlocks the door for us. Walking in, I head for the living room that is now turned into what looks like a small reception. Gone are the couches, and in their place is a cast iron square with blush pink roses wrapped all around it. Tea lights make it across. All the furniture is gone. The only thing in this room are blush roses, which are my favorites.

“This place looks like a fairy tale.”

Max walks to me, holding a bouquet in his hands. “For you.” He hands it to me as our song “Dive” comes on.

“Dance with me?” I ask him as I walk to him.

“Every single day of my life.” He wraps an arm around my waist. I hold the bouquet around his shoulders and we hold our free hands to his chest.

He takes his phone out and raises his hand, snapping a picture of us. I’m looking at the camera while he looks at me. “Stunning,” he says quietly as his cell phone rings. “Angel, don’t freak out.” His voice is curt, tight.

I don’t have to time to say anything because my phone buzzes with a text from Matthew.

Allison, when you get this you better call me.

“Oh my God.” I look at him. “What did we just do?” He looks at me shocked, steps back, and away from me.

“Max.” I reach out to him while he dodges me.

“A mistake.”

I don’t know if he’s asking or telling. My heart hurts as his eyes go dark. He darts out of the room and the front door slams after him. As I stand here in my wedding dress, a tear rolls down my face, and I look down and see my glistening wedding band.

Ms. Madison might just be the Queen of the reformed hockey bad boy!
This third installment of the Something So series introduces us to a grown up Allison Grant (daughter of Parker and sister to Mathew in books 1 and 2) and semi- reformed bad boy Max Horton (seen as antagonist in Book 2).
I loved how the sparks flew between these two from the get go, but that it took a while for the romance between them to blossom. Both Allison and Max are characters that I enjoyed getting to know and I appreciated how they peeled the layers back for each other becoming friends then lovers.
Something So Irresistible is technically a stand alone, but the key players in the secondary cast are the principal players in the earlier books, so there is some back story/interplay that wouldn’t work as well if you have not read the prior books. That said, this is an excellent and fun read that I highly recommend.

When her nose isn't buried in a book, or her fingers flying across a keyboard writing, she's in the kitchen creating gourmet meals. You can find her, in four inch heels no less, in the car chauffeuring kids, or possibly with her husband scheduling his business trips. It's a good thing her characters do what she says, because even her Labrador doesn't listen to her...

The Crown Prince's Bride by Donna Alward ~ New Release and Review

A Crown Prince gets a second chance at love with the woman who’s always been there - in the next book in the prince duology from Donna Alward!

The Crown Prince of Marazur is suffering from a broken heart. After losing his wife and future queen, he knows he’ll never find love again with a partner as wonderful as her. He’s thrown himself into his duties and is trying to be a better father to his two children, but he’s lonely. Even though falling in love seems impossible, so does spending the rest of his life alone.

Stephani has been Raoul’s assistant for years. Smart, loyal, and discreet, Stephani is fantastic at her job. Except for the fact that she’s been in love with her boss since her first week of employment, not that she would ever act on it. Besides, Raoul is first in line to the throne and she’s his assistant. If Raoul ever marries again, it’ll be with someone who can be a future queen. Not someone like Stephani.

When Raoul’s date for a state dinner is unable to attend, he invites Stephani. She’s well-versed on the issues and castle protocol, and Raoul’s always been comfortable with her. But when Stephani arrives, Raoul hardly recognizes her. Is this stunning woman the same one who’s run his office for years?

The Crown Prince’s Bride is the ultimate fairy tale for readers looking for Cinderella to get her prince—and be able to keep him past midnight.

This was a cute, sweet read.
Raoul is a Crown Prince and widowed father of two. Stephanie is his long time assistant, his right hand, and his deceased wife's cousin. It turns out that Stephanie has also had a crush/been a little bit in love with him for a long time.
Having seen these characters previously (in the first book of this Duology), it wasn't difficult to slip right into this well written story. I genuinely liked both Raoul and Stephanie, but I have to admit some frustration with how he handled the situations around their budding romance. As I read, I found myself really rooting for Stephanie. I appreciated how she decided to take matters into her own hands and put herself first, even if it meant leaving behind what she loved.
My one real complaint - and the thing that kept this from being a full 4 star read for me was how the author handled the "big conflict/resolution" part of the story arc. I feel like she had something set up that would have allowed for Stephanie to really stand on her own and for Raoul to make a truly grand gesture, but didn't pursue that line of the story. The direction taken was ultimately sweet, but I felt like it was the easy road and a bit trite.
Overall, I enjoyed this story and was happy with the resolution. If you've read Diego and Rose's story then this is a book you'll want to pick up too.

Small Business Sunday - Beauty Counter

We are starting a new feature on the blog, called "Small Business Sunday." This is a direct reflection on the changes in my life over the last 2 years or so.... You guys might have noticed that there are fewer posts in general and sometimes days when I don't post at all.

The reason behind that is simple - I went from being a full time stay home parent to working full time at a job I didn't love to working a part time job I enjoy most of the time. During the shake up from full time to part time, I also decided to start working with a company whose vision I truly embraced - Beautycounter.

What is that vision? safer skin care (not organic, not all natural, but safe).

Why is that important to me? Well, without going into gory details I learned a couple of things the hard way about 6 years ago:
1) We can be sensitive to things without being allergic
2) Stuff builds up in our bodies
3) Our skin is our biggest organ and when our bodies are angry with us (see numbers 1 and 2) our skin is a likely place for us to see that reaction

It took nearly 9 months for me to go from super sick to medication free, and it took embracing things outside Western medicine to do it. So, when I was introduced to Beautycounter's mission to change skin care and their 1500 item "Never List" of chemicals known to cause harm I was intrigued.

I was first introduced to Beautycounter in May 2017 and that was only because a friend became a consultant and had a party. I only went to the party because with working full time I wasn't seeing my friends as much and I missed the connection. I had no idea that I would fall in love with the products! Since May, I have gradually been changing my skin and hair routines to 100% Beautycounter and am seeing awesome results.

My super curly, somewhat hard to control hair LOVES the Smooth and Control line. I actually use LESS styling product and my hair looks and feels less "stiff" - something I had just lived with because it was what was needed to control the curls and letting my hair dry on it's own (heat is not my hair's friend!)

My skin care routine is now 100% Beautycounter - and I'm going to get personal for a minute - blackheads. Those annoying pores on my nose and chin that always looked huge and like they were a pimple waiting to happen.... yeah, those are gone. I'm not even sure when it happened. I was using the magnifying mirror the other day and it just occurred to me how much better my nose looked :) I use a combination of our Nourishing collection and Balancing oil every day, our Cleansing balm at night, and Charcoal mask at least once a week.

One thing I also love, Beautycounter stands behind their products - there is a 60 day money back guarantee. If something doesn't work for you, they buy it back no questions asked. If Beautycounter is something you want to try, you can do so (with me) HERE

Today is the last day of the 30% off WinterSale (select items only)

If you decided to try Beautycounter as a Band Of Beauty member ($29 for a year)
You get a free gift, free shipping of orders of $100 or more, and every order earns you 15% credit toward future orders. This months free gift for joing the Band of Beauty is the Nourishing Cream Cleanser, a $26 value - so it's like paying $3 to join!

Thanks for hanging out with me today! If you would like to see your business featured here next Sunday, just comment below!

Now That You Mention ItNow That You Mention It by Kristan Higgins

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Copy provided by publisher via Net Galley

Ms Higgins has done it again!
Nora is a mid 30s doctor when an accident shines a light on what she calls “the greyness” of her life and she decides to return to the small island town where she grew up.
The story that follows is one that I think a lot of people can relate to on one level or another. We see Nora deal with complicated family dynamics, hard memories and resentment stemming from high school (both hers and towards her), more recent traumas, and the ending of her recent romantic relationship.
This well written story shows us that even achieving success as an adult doesn’t erase hurts during our formative years if they aren’t dealt with. Nora’s return to Scudder Island forces her to complete the emotional journey that was paused when she left the island for college and avoided coming back.
In Higgin’s typical style, there are humorous and awkward moments mixed in with the heavier emotions. Nora’s growth and the positive changes she brings to those around her made this a heart warming tale perfect for anyone.

A Stone in the Sea (Bleeding Stars, #1)A Stone in the Sea by A.L. Jackson

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

I’m a bit late to reading Shea and Sebastian’s story and have actually already read part of the series that happen later.
Ms. Jackson writes a riveting tale of two people discovering themselves with each other and deciding what type of life they want.
Baz and Shea don’t have an easy journey to come together and they haven’t weathered everything yet. I am looking forward to seeing more of their story in the next installment.

Co-WreckerCo-Wrecker by Meghan Quinn

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Ms Quinn is a newer to me author and I didn’t know what I was missing!
Co-wrecker is YA -dealing with early 20 something college students. There is typical YA drama and angst....
What makes this stand out is the humor, especially when we are seeing things from Andrew’s (the hero) point of view. Sadie (our heroine) has her funny moments too, but she is dealing with a lot more emotional trauma/growth.
This was an enjoyable, fun, semi emotional read that has me wanting to read more from this author.

Kiss Me Kate (The English Brothers, #6, Blueberry Lane, #6)Kiss Me Kate by Katy Regnery

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Ms Regnery has done it again! She's written a touching story that makes you want to curl up and keep reading!
Kate and Etienne met at 15, had a whirlwind romance, and then were separated for 12 years before business brings them back together. One of the things I loved about this second chance romance was how Kate seemed to blossom once Ten came back into her life.
When we first meet Kate in this book, she is successful, but seems to put herself in the shadows. As she and Etienne learn more about each other as adults, she comes into her own and becomes a strong female character that is easy to cheer on.
I was a little worried going into this book as it's at the tale end of the English Brothers series and I haven't read the other books, but it wasn't an issue at all. This is truly a standalone effort, but be forewarned that this does contain spoilers to the other books. The Brothers are key secondary character's in Kate's story.
Ms. Regnery was a new author to me in 2017 and after this, I am even more determined to read more of her work.

Mr. Perfect (Mister, #1)Mr. Perfect by J.A. Huss

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

This is an author/book that I've heard a lot about, but haven't read until now. To be honest, I enjoyed the book, but I'm not ready to jump on the band wagon.
For starters, I had mixed feeling about both the main characters - Ellie and Mac. They both had moments where their personalities just weren't consistent. One minute Ellie is living a fantasy life with one guy - one who her friends know is just stringing her along - and the next she's in a quasi relationship with another.
I also didn't 100% buy the "love" story between Mac and Ellie. Their physical chemistry was off the charts and I even understood why things imploded after 2 weeks, but the fact that would be strong enough to withstand a separation and be instantly rekindled just didn't jive for me.
And maybe I'm thinking about it too much....
If you are looking for a fun, entertaining, sexy book then this definitely worth the time to read.
