Dax by Sawyer Bennett ~ New Release and Review

Dax (Arizona Vengeance, Book #4)
Sawyer Bennett
Release Date: July 9, 2019

Synopsis:
The Arizona Vengeance is killing it on the ice. But one player can’t seem to keep his eye on the puck—all thanks to the woman he just married to save her life.

My name is Dax Monahan and hockey is my passion. And if you want to succeed in this sport you have to bust your ass 24/7. I’ve never had a hard time focusing on my career, but when my past comes knocking, no amount of training can prepare me for what lies on the other side of the door.

Regan Miles was always like a sister to me. When a shared tragedy brings us face to face after several years, I’m shocked to see just how much she’s changed. Gone is the shy, awkward little girl that always used to chase me and her brother around. Instead, I’m faced with a gorgeous woman who makes it damn hard to concentrate on anything but her.

Turns out, she’s in trouble, and the only way out is to get married.

I surprise myself when I tell her to marry me. Order her, actually. And most shocking of all, she doesn’t even hesitate before saying yes.

So it’s settled. We’re getting hitched and she’s moving to Arizona with me. All platonic, of course.

The catch?
I never knew I’d fall so hard for my best friend’s little sister.

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Author

It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of Ms Bennett and her hockey books. That said, I think I go into these reads with high expectations and while Dax is a great read, I don’t feel like it’s the strongest in this particular series.

I genuinely liked Dax and Reagan. The set up that brought them together as a romantic couple is interesting and I would have liked to seen more done with the story line. How Dax and Reagan dealt with issues they faced and related conflict almost seemed too easy.

I think my biggest concern/issue with Dax is that this book seemed to be a bridge between the three previous books and upcoming stories. Ms Bennett did and excellent job of blurring the lines and not excluding Dax and/or Reagan from the preparation for future stories, but I did notice the amount of time spent on secondary seemed more significant than I would have expected from her.

Overall, Dax is an entertaining read and definitely worth it for series fans. I would caution new readers to go back and start with Bishop’s book for some of the back stories referenced to make sense.

Quick:  Sparks fly between a die-hard romantic and a sexy cynic in this fresh, funny romance from    USA Today bestselling author Adriana Locke.

Synopsis:
That cream-filled, caramel-topped doughnut should have been hers. Still, Haley Raynor can’t deny that the pastry thief with the dreamy blue eyes looks even more delicious. But moving in on a handsome devil like Trevor Kelly is bad news for a die-hard romantic like Haley. Trevor doesn’t believe in love. She does. Girls always fall for Trevor, and in the end, he always ends up looking like a bad-boy cad. Still, spending some time with Haley and her smart-talking, kissable mouth sounds pretty perfect. Besides, he’s only going to be in Dogwood Lane for one week. How much trouble could they possibly get into?
The only answer? A “no falling in love” contract. All Trevor and Haley have to do is follow the rules and resist the attraction sizzling between them…before their hearts get completely tangled up in temptation.

SNIPPET:

“Did you just buy my coffee?” I ask.
“Yes.”
“You know what goes good with coffee …” I look at his plate and then back to him. All he does is laugh.
He gets to his feet, unfolding a body that’s taller, and harder, than I expected. His jeans are coupled with a grey and black flannel that fits him well enough to see the lines of his body. The curve of his biceps, the dip of his waist, and the slight angle from his shoulder to his neck is divine.
“Are you finished?” he asks.
I zip a line from his boots to his face. “What do you mean?”
“I don’t want to walk out of here until you’ve finished appreciating me.” He grins. “If you’re done, I do need to go.”
A full-on blush covers my body and, when he laughs, I wonder if he’s thinking it’s the same color as my panties. This makes me blush more.
“You are not the gentleman I hoped you were,” I say, failing to hide a laugh.
He smiles devilishly, assessing me as he shoves his wallet back in his pocket. Then, with a pained expression and a dose of hesitation for my benefit, he slides his plate in front of me. “Here. You can have my donut. I know it’s not all you wanted, but it’ll have to do. I’m late.” He takes a cup from Claire for the road.
“I didn’t hear anything you said after ‘You can have my donut’,” I say, sticking my finger in the middle of the pastry. “But thanks.”
“They have forks, you know.”
“I know. But I wanted to make sure you didn’t ask for it back.” A warmth spreads through my middle as he laughs.

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

Tangle is a solid second entry in the Dogwood Lane series. We follow Haley (a secondary character from the first book) as she works to care for herself and not “need” a man and promptly has an instant attraction to Trevor who is temporarily in town to oversee a project.

I liked Haley and Trevor and their connection was fun and entertaining. I appreciated the sense from Haley that she knew herself and understood that Trevor was the type of person who could hurt her if she allowed him too.

Even though I liked Trevor and found his personality intriguing, I was also a little annoyed by him. The conflict between Haley and Trevor felt a bit manufactured and built up a bit more than necessary. For every fun/sweet/positive interaction there was an immediate offset and it took some of the “bloom” off of their romance for me.

As book 2 in a series, there is also a decent sized secondary cast. Some of these interactions and relationships were set up in book 1, but someone getting started here won’t be lost.

Overall, I enjoyed Tangled and am curious about what may be coming next for Dogwood Lane.
