Book Blurb:

Life as I knew it ended the day I accepted my fate.

In its place is an existence even the wildest imagination could never fathom. Strange creatures walk among us, plotting our demise, and I’ve come to find that the fate of our world rests squarely on my shoulders. We’re all in danger and I’m trying to figure out how to make it through each day. The key to my survival is a man I can’t figure out. As dangerous as the darkest fae, I have no choice but to work with him to stop the prophecy that’s foretold to be the ruination of mankind. Carrick Byrne continues to be my only source of information, but he doles it out as he sees fit. He intrigues and scares me in equal measure, yet I can’t help but be attracted to him. And the more I discover about him, the more it becomes clear he feels the same. As we travel to Faere in search of answers, we find that every piece of information leads to more questions, that every question leads to a new piece of the puzzle, and that, most importantly, no one can be trusted. The more secrets we uncover, one thing is certain— if we have any chance of saving the world, we have to do it together. A Discovery of Secrets and Fate is book two of the Chronicles of the Stone Veil series and is best enjoyed if read in series order.

*Caution to readers - This is the 2nd installment of the Chronicles of the Stone Veil, it picks up on the adventures of Finley Porter immediately after the end of book 1, this is not a stand alone book - you need to read book 1 in order to understand what is happening here*

Ms Bennett has us pick up with Finley and Carrick were book 1 left off. She does an excellent job of peeling back more pieces of the story while maintaining the intrigue element. I appreciate the way layers of the magical world Finley now inhabits are added gradually so that we get to gain undersatnding right along with Finley.

I continue to like Finley and root for her to figure things out. I wasn’t sure about Carrick in book one, but here, as we learn more about him, I discovered an appealing side of him previously unseen. The cast of secondary characters grows a bit here and I can't help but wonder how these some of these individuals will contribute to the story down the road - as I would be surprised if we are done with the Fae Prince and Princess.

As with book 1, this installment ends in a cliffhanger. I am hoping we don’t have to wait very long to see what happens next!

About the Author:

USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author Kat Mizera is a South Florida native. Born in Miami Beach with a healthy dose of wanderlust, she's called Los Angeles, Long Island, upstate New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Atlanta home. She's never been able to pick which locale is her favorite, but if pressed, she'd probably choose the west coast.

A typical PTA mom with a wonderful and supportive husband (Kevin) and two amazing boys (Nick and Max), Kat can usually be found scrapbooking or indulging in her second love (after writing) - traveling. Greece is one of her favorite places in the world. She loves that Athens is a big city with a small-town feel. The food, beaches and culture keep her going back as often as possible.

Kat's been a working freelance writer for nearly 30 years. She sold her first article--a review of a rock concert--for $10 in 1985. Since then she's been an entertainment journalist, waitress, bartender, legal assistant, food critic, magazine editor, substitute teacher, and sports writer. She also spent some time working at A & M Records in Los Angeles.

As you can guess from her Las Vegas Sidewinders series, Kat loves hockey and occasionally writes articles about her favorite team, the Florida Panthers. The rest of the time, she writes novels: sexy, romantic fiction that she hopes makes you as happy as it makes her. There's something enticing about hockey players and romance...

Play is an interesting start to a new series about a brand new band. The focus here is on Tyler and his instant connection to super star Ariel.

While Tyler and his friends are creating a new band, he is no stranger to being famous. I wasn’t sure how I felt about him at first, but the more I saw him with Ariel the more I liked him. Ariel is a character that I couldn’t help but empathize with. From the outside looking in, she appears to have it all, but appearances can be deceiving.

I enjoyed seeing these two get to know each other and seeing Ariel brought into the fold of people who surrounded Tyler. The conflict here was unique and I appreciated the fresh approach to the typical “screw up and grovel.”

As much as I enjoyed Play, I also struggled with it as well. Ms Mizera is an author I’ve read in the past, but I have not read her full back list. This book seems to pick up threads from multiple previous series and brings them together via secondary characters and friends. There was almost too much connection to other books/series as some of the references left me a bit confused and took me away from Tyler and Ariel’s story.

I am curious to see what may be in store for Tyler’s band mates .... and I need to go read more of Ms Mizera’s back list!

Have you ever heard the idea of “Right person, Wrong time” or that people come into our lives for a “reason or season”? Well, in Love Like Her we see Olivia and Eros deal with those very ideas.

These two first meet at 18 and 24 when he saves the day. This sets them on a path of run ins and encounters over 10+ years until events finally come to a head. Olivia and Eros are both likeable characters that I enjoyed spending time with. Each encounter in between their first meeting and the ultimate meeting builds the tension and idea that these two should be together forever - if only life would line up correctly. I appreciated the well written lessons about putting our own needs first, being willing to take a risk, and that light bulb moment of understanding that while you’ve been saying the right thing, you’ve been using the wrong language for the one you love.

Love Like Her is full of sweet moments and funny mishaps. Loyal Burgoa readers will see familiar faces among the secondary characters of Eros’s family, but this is truly a stand-alone read.

Did you love Richard and Katy in The Contract? What about the boys of BAM? Well, in My Saving Grace Ms Moreland introduces us to the next generation from these two great series starting with Grace Van Ryan (oldest child of Richard and Katy).

Grace is a promising law intern who finds herself with a mutual atraction to her supervisior, Jaxson. For those of who have read The Contract the situation between Grace and Jaxson has echos of Richard and Katy, but this is definitely a different, unique story.

The first half of My Saving Grace is told almost competly from Grace's point of view. I enjoyed getting to meet the characters through her. I rooted for her and I worried about her. The relationship between Grace and Jaxon at this point was fraught with peril and Ms Moreland did an excellent job of keeping us guessing about where things were going, especially as Jaxson definitely had "lion with a thorn in his paw moments."

In the second half of the book, we get to see things from both Grace and Jaxson's point of view. I continued to like and root for Grace, but discovered that I also really liked Jaxson too. Learning more about his background explained so much about him that I found myself hoping these two could find a way to talk and move out of their own way.

The seconday cast here is slightly large as you have the Van Ryan and BAM families intermingling, but the key players that a reader needs to keep track of are realatively few. While technically a stand alone read and the beginning of a new series, I would recommend that readers read at least some of the previous series books first as there are references to the older stories.

New York Times/USA Today bestselling author Melanie Moreland, lives a happy and content life in a quiet area of Ontario with her beloved husband of twenty-seven-plus years and their rescue cat, Amber. Nothing means more to her than her friends and family, and she cherishes every moment spent with them.

While seriously addicted to coffee, and highly challenged with all things computer-related and technical, she relishes baking, cooking, and trying new recipes for people to sample. She loves to throw dinner parties, and also enjoys traveling, here and abroad, but finds coming home is always the best part of any trip.

Melanie loves stories, especially paired with a good wine, and enjoys skydiving (free falling over a fleck of dust) extreme snowboarding (falling down stairs) and piloting her own helicopter (tripping over her own feet.) She's learned happily ever afters, even bumpy ones, are all in how you tell the story.

Pregnant at forty-two? Back the cow up...

Harland Bull Eaton has lost many things—his first wife, his beloved mother, those three women he proposed to . . . Oh, and there was that time he almost lost the family dairy farm due to a scandal. He’s losing faith in just about everything, especially love.

But one night, his friends give him a dare. No commitments. No heartbreak. Just buy that gorgeous redhead a drink. The big-city bombshell he’s set his eyes on swirls him into a tailspin that lands them in bed for a one-night stand he’s pretty sure he’ll never forget. But this time, he swears, he won’t let his heart ride herd on his common sense.

Recently separated and newly unemployed, Scarlett Russell is at a crossroads. With no other plan than visiting a friend in Vermont, the last thing she expects is a hunky, silver fox offering to buy her a drink. Even less expected is when she raises that offer to “take me to bed, cowboy.” She just wants one night to forget everything gone wrong.

Turns out once won’t be nearly enough. Won’t ever be enough, feeling the way she does. But secrets and an unexpected surprise are a lot to handle . . . unless these two can break a trail to an unexpected happily ever after.

Cowboy is LB Dunbar's entry into the Busy Bean world. I was curious about the book give Ms Dunbar's excellent history writing more mature couples and I wanted to see how she would handle a 42 year old woman being pregnant for the first time just as the rest of her world falls apart.

I enjoyed getting to know Scarlett and Bull. They were both great characters bringing a life time of baggage to a unique and potentially stressful situation. As much as I liked them, there were times in this read that I wanted to reach into the kindle and slap them both upside the head as they definitely weren't acting their age!

There were times in the story when I felt like Scarlett and Bull had a great connection and then times when it felt like he was taking past frustrations out of her. This made for a bit of a yo-yo process that seemed the drag the conflict out through the whole story. While this "trust" issue created solid conflict that really needed to be addressed, there were also issues that I felt were left hanging a bit. The introduction of Shelton (Scarlett's ex) and her parents didn't feel fully resolved to me and I would have appreciated more closure for those relationships.

The Busy Bean is a series that I don't know much about, but I am definitely curious to learn more about this cute sounding cafe and the remaining Eaton brothers.

Cowboy by L.B. Dunbar - Excerpt

“A coffee, black, no sugar, no cream, and a caramel macchiato with exactly five drizzles of caramel, fifteen pumps of vanilla syrup, whipped cream, and an extra shot.”

What the . . .

Thank God, I did not take that order. I don’t even know what that is. There’s a pause and I’m wondering what’s happening when Bull says, “You have a little something . . .”

I just want to die a slow death as I imagine him swiping at the corner of her lip or wiping off her nose and that sweet, tender touch will be all the spark she needs to want to pounce on this man behind me. Bull has these deep blue eyes and that silver speckled scruff, plus his hair that looks artfully streaked with gray. He’s just all around sexy and he doesn’t even know it about himself. Then, his touch. The soft strokes down my body and the delicate dips of his fingers, I just can’t—

“Have either of you seen Scarlett?” Audrey asks.

Frick.

“Scarlett?” Bull chokes behind me.

“Yeah, Scarlett. She’s our newest barista and I swear she was out here.”

“I didn’t see anyone,” Vermont Barbie states. “But then again, I’ve only been looking at Bull.”

Okay, that’s enough.

“Found it,” I say, popping up from behind the couch and holding my fingers pinched together like I’ve just found gold in them there wood floorboards.

“Scarlett?” Audrey blinks at me with those expressive eyes of hers . She’s a petite blond with a lot of power behind her personality. I slowly stand but find myself dizzy as I do and grip the back of the couch for support.

“Whoa.” I blurt, unable to stop myself as the room spins and my legs tremble. My skin runs cold, but I break out in a full body sweat.

“Scarlett, are you okay?” Audrey asks, rushing to the edge of the couch while Bull quickly stands to face me.

“I . . . yeah, I just think I stood up too fast.” However, that isn’t the full explanation because that rush to my head has now settled back down to my belly.

“You sure you’re okay? You look a little gray,” Audrey asks.

“I . . . excuse me.” Rushing around the couch, I fight the pull to look at Bull, as I disappear behind the counter, bypassing our waiting customers with one finger in the air, and then press out the door to the grassy area behind the building for some much needed fresh air. Once outside, I promptly bend forward and heave.

“Oh my God, are you okay?” Audrey says behind me and I close my eyes, embarrassed by my position in front of my boss. Audrey’s younger than me, but a good, business woman and kind-hearted. She took me on without any prior experience in the coffee industry.

“Yeah. Just something I ate, I think.” I honestly don’t know. It’s been a few weeks like this, nausea, fatigue, and then if I do get sick, which doesn’t always happen, I feel a million times better once I vomit. “I just have a little stomach bug, but I don’t have a fever. I’m so sorry about this.” I point to the grass which holds no evidence of how my stomach felt. “And that.” I nod toward the café.

Audrey’s brows crease as she examines my face. “What else is wrong? As far as how you are feeling?”

I consider it a second and then answer. “My boobs hurt. My back kills. And I had a tuna fish sandwich for breakfast the other day. I think there was something wrong with the mayonnaise.” Then I reconsider what I’ve said. That sandwich the other morning had been the best damn tuna fish in the world and the last thing I’d ever eat when it comes to a breakfast item.

Audrey’s lips slowly curl and her eyes spark like she knows something. “Scarlett, could you be pregnant?”

“What? No. Heaven’s no. Absolutely not. I . . .” I stare back at her, horrified at the notion. I’m forty-two. I’m recently divorced. I cannot be pregnant at this stage of my life.

“No. I am definitely not pregnant.”
