Review Round Up ~ January 16

Coming Soon/New Releases:

The Forever Girl (Wildstone, #6)The Forever Girl by Jill Shalvis

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Copy Provided by Author

Shalvis has done it again..... The Town of Wildstone has a habit of providing much need healing with a touch of romance and The Forever Girl is one more example of this heart warming habit.

Our cast consists of four foster siblings and the small supporting cast of child, friend, and fiancé. Cat uses her upcoming wedding to bring her three foster siblings home after and extended separation. The results of this reunion are not what anyone expected. Cat, Walker, and Maze are the three characters we hear from most in this well written story about a family made by choice.

This is a story that pulled me in and had me rooting for the characters as they figured out how to face the past, heal the hurts, and look to the future. While all of these characters has some rough edges, I found myself liking most of them (Dillion was the one I wasn’t ever sure about) and really hoping they could fix things to have a happily ever after. After seeing how things worked out for Maze and Walker, I am very curious to learn more about Jace, Heather, and what did Cat do next. I hope Ms Shalvis will give us more with these characters in future Wildstone books.

TBR READS:

Wild Highway (Runaway, #2)Wild Highway by Devney Perry

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a friend

Review Copy Purchased

Runaway Road, the first book in this series, was a breath of fresh air read for me, so I have been looking forward to reading this installment, Wild Highway.

Here, we see Gemma take a journey that is part physical and part emotional. We see her reconnect with and old friend and a former flame. Easton (the former flame) plays a role, especially in helping Gemma face some her old wounds, but this is really her story.

This is well written and emotional without being over the top dramatic. Ms Perry pulled me in and had me invested in seeing how Gemma faces her battles and embraces the chance for change. I appreciated the way the romantic relationship and Gemma’s emotional evolution were woven together and helped moved each other forward.

Yes, this is a series and the books are connected, but the characters here are independent of those in Runaway Road. Warning if you decide to read the series out of order, there are comments that let you know how the previous characters are doing, not spoiler level, but you know how the story ends. One key player in the small, but impactful, secondary cast here - Katherine- will have a staring role in the third book of this series and I can’t wait to read it!

Never Got Over You ~ S L Scott ~ New Release & Review

Release Date: January 14

The universe shifts, and our stars realign.

I’d sworn off men. And then I met Nick Christiansen.

Technically, I fell for him, literally, the moment I landed in his quarterback-sized arms and looked into those soulful eyes. I blame the rum. Or was it tequila?

Spoiler alert: It was those delectable dimples.

Either way, Nick was stupidly handsome and ridiculously charming. He held me like he cared and listened to me like I mattered. Captivated by great conversation and rock-hard abs, Nick had me reconsidering the “No Men” promise I’d made myself.

I still regret walking away the next day.
~
I can’t stop thinking about the one who got away. But then I run right into Natalie St. James.

She’s still unwittingly gorgeous, if not more so, and as wildly quirky as I remember.

Sidebar: She’s on a date.

What do I expect? For her to still be thinking about me?

I still regret what happens next.

We didn’t get the love story we deserved the first time, then I screwed up our second chance. When the universe shifts and our stars realign, is the third time a charm?

Read an Excerpt Here:

He shoves his hands in his pockets and rocks back on his heels. “About that date? The offer still stands if you’re up for it.”

“Tonight?”

“Right now.”

Checking my watch, I purse my lips in thought. “I don’t know. I’m coming off a bad date, so that puts a lot of pressure on you to redeem my night. If you don’t, that will be two bad dates in one night. Might be a record.”

“I’m up for the challenge.” I knew he was, but I love that he takes the bait . . . I mean, up to the task. When he looks at me, it’s as if he sees my thoughts, and my cheeks heat in response. Taking a few steps closer, so close that my eyes dip closed as if I’m about to be kissed, he says, “As I see it, we have several options.”

Playing off how bad I just misread that situation—again, I might add, recalling the last rejection from him that I barely survived—I tap my eye as if dust invaded the corner. “Sorry,” I reply, blinking like a crazy person. Lowering my arm, I latch my good eye onto him. “Several options, you say? Do tell.”

He gives me a second full once-over and then rubs the pad of his thumb over his bottom lip as if he’s devising a plan. The intensity of his eyes lands back on me. “We can get a drink at a nearby bar. Or maybe you’re up to hang out at my hotel suite . . . or your place. Whatever you want to do, I’m all yours.”

“Are you?”

A smirk splits his lips. “Since Catalina, but that’s old news, and I want to hear about the new you.”

“Like?”

“Natalie in New York versus you in California.”

Undecided on what I want to do, I look down the street one way and then the other, but with him standing so close, his scent has our past trickling back into my memories. I turn back to face him. “I know a place not too far from here. It’s low-key at this hour, but then turns into an after-hours dance club.”

“I prefer low key.”

“Then we have ourselves a date.”

We make it to the corner before he says, “You look good, by the way.”

“Thanks. You aren’t so shabby yourself.” The sound of his laughter is addicting, and don’t get me started on that cute smile. I’d almost forgotten about those dimples.

He playfully knocks his elbow into mine. “Looking on the bright side paid off.”

“How so?”

“You told me that if we look on the bright side, we won’t be strangers the next time we meet. And here we are—not strangers.”

“At the time, it was one of my wiser pieces of free advice.”

“What about now?”

“I’d tell you to get my phone number. Much wiser, but you know, we could reintroduce ourselves and share our numbers just in case one of us goes MIA.” Hint. Hint. Hint.

Meet S.L. Scott

New York Times and USA Bestselling Author, S. L. Scott, was always interested in the arts. She grew up painting, writing poetry and short stories, and wiling her days away lost in a good book and the movies.

With a degree in Journalism, she continued her love of the written word by reading American authors like Salinger and Fitzgerald.

She was intrigued by their flawed characters living in picture perfect worlds, but could still debate that the worlds those characters lived in were actually the flawed ones.

This dynamic of leaving the reader invested in the words, inspired Scott to start writing with emotion while interjecting an underlying passion into her own stories.

Living in the capital of Texas with her family, Scott loves traveling and avocados, beaches, and cooking with her kids. She's obsessed with epic romances and loves a good plot twist. She dreams of seeing one of her own books made into a movie one day as well as returning to Europe. Her favorite color is blue, but she likens it more toward the sky than the emotion. Her home is filled with the welcoming symbol of the pineapple and finds surfing a challenge though she likes to think she's a pro.

Is the the third time a charm?
Find out in this well written, fun read!

Nick and Natalie are both recent graduates (college/law school) when she literally falls into his arms while on vacation. Ms Scott delivers an amazing first encounter that makes you believe in things like love at first sight.

Never Got Over You teases us with the idea of fate and being in the right place at the right time as we see these two young people figure out the first steps of adult hood and exploring a relationship.

Nick and Natalie (as well as the smallish secondary cast) are wonderful characters that I enjoyed getting to know. I found myself pulled into their adventures and rooting for them to figure out the roads to where they are meant to be. There are several lessons to learn and sage advice given if the reader pays attention, but this is also a great book if you are looking for a feel good escape.

There are several secondary characters that I am curious about. I wonder if this heart strings tugging, fun, flirty, stand alone read could spark future books?

The Perfect Guests by Emma Rous ~ New Release and Review

The USA Today bestselling author of The Au Pair returns with another delicious, twisty novel—about a grand estate with many secrets, an orphan caught in a web of lies, and a young woman playing a sinister game.

1988. Beth Soames is fourteen years old when her aunt takes her to stay at Raven Hall, a rambling manor in the isolated East Anglian fens. The Averells, the family who lives there, are warm and welcoming, and Beth becomes fast friends with their daughter, Nina. At times, Beth even feels like she's truly part of the family...until they ask her to help them with a harmless game—and nothing is ever the same.

2019. Sadie Langton is an actress struggling to make ends meet when she lands a well-paying gig to pretend to be a guest at a weekend party. She is sent a suitcase of clothing, a dossier outlining the role she is to play, and instructions. It's strange, but she needs the money, and when she sees the stunning manor she'll be staying at, she figures she’s got nothing to lose.

In person, Raven Hall is even grander than she'd imagined—even with damage from a fire decades before—but the walls seem to have eyes. As day turns to night, Sadie starts to feel that there’s something off about the glamorous guests who arrive, and as the party begins, it becomes chillingly apparent their unseen host is playing games with everyone...including her.

Emma Rous is the USA Today bestselling author of The Au Pair. She grew up in England, Indonesia, Kuwait, Portugal and Fiji, and from a young age she had two ambitions: to write stories, and to look after animals. She studied veterinary medicine and zoology at the University of Cambridge, and worked as a small animal veterinarian for eighteen years before starting to write fiction. Emma lives near Cambridge in England with her husband and three sons, and she now writes full time. Author photo © Brian Rous

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

Not one, not two, but three storylines tie together in this intriguing book centered around Raven Hall.

Ms Rous does an excellent job of starting with two seeming straight forward stories of Beth and Sadie set roughly 30 years apart. As both stories begin to have odd occurrences pop up, a third older story is woven in to paint an even stranger picture of events surrounding this old estate.

The craft around The Perfect Guests is solid. There are bread crumbs that hint to connections and oddities that up the tension level, but answers don’t appear until the author is ready to pull the various strings together.
One key issue kept this from being a full 4 star read for me. While most questions are answered, there was one big issue not fully addressed. This unanswered question doesn’t derail enjoyment of the overall story, it just creates a lingering “why?” that is a bit unsettling.

Overall, this is a solid somewhat twisting read. I look forward to seeing what the author has coming next.

The Things We Leave Unfinished ~ Rebecca Yarros ~ Teaser

THE THINGS WE LEAVE UNFINISHED by Rebecca Yarros
Release Date: February 23rd
  PREORDER TODAY!
Kobo: http://bit.ly/2LCdGCZ
Blurb: Told in alternating timelines, THE THINGS WE LEAVE UNFINISHED examines the risks we take for love, the scars too deep to heal, and the endings we can’t bring ourselves to see coming. Twenty-eight-year-old Georgia Stanton has to start over after she gave up almost everything in a brutal divorce—the New York house, the friends, and her pride. Now back home at her late great-grandmother’s estate in Colorado, she finds herself face-to-face with Noah Harrison, the bestselling author of a million books where the cover is always people nearly kissing. He’s just as arrogant in person as in interviews, and she’ll be damned if the good-looking writer of love stories thinks he’s the one to finish her grandmother’s final novel…even if the publisher swears he’s the perfect fit. Noah is at the pinnacle of his career. With book and movie deals galore, there isn’t much the “golden boy” of modern fiction hasn’t accomplished. But he can’t walk away from what might be the best book of the century—the one his idol, Scarlett Stanton, left unfinished. Coming up with a fitting ending for the legendary author is one thing, but dealing with her beautiful, stubborn, cynical great-granddaughter, Georgia, is quite another. But as they read Scarlett’s words in both the manuscript and her box of letters, they start to realize why Scarlett never finished the book—it’s based on her real-life romance with a World War II pilot, and the ending isn’t a happy one. Georgia knows all too well that love never works out, and while the chemistry and connection between her and Noah is undeniable, she’s as determined as ever to learn from her great-grandmother’s mistakes—even if it means destroying Noah’s career.
About the Author: Rebecca Yarros is a hopeless romantic and a lover of all things coffee, chocolate, and Paleo. She is the author of the Flight & Glory series, including Full Measures, the award-winning Eyes Turned Skyward, Beyond What is Given, and Hallowed Ground. Her new Renegade Series features Wilder and the upcoming Nova, and is sure to keep your heart pounding. She loves military heroes, and has been blissfully married to hers for fourteen years. When she’s not writing, she’s tying hockey skates for her four sons, sneaking in some guitar time, or watching brat-pack movies with her two daughters. She lives in Colorado with the hottest Apache pilot ever, their rambunctious gaggle of kids, an English bulldog who is more stubborn than sweet, and a bunny named General Fluffy Pants who torments the aforementioned bulldog. They recently adopted their youngest daughter from the foster system, and Rebecca is passionate about helping others do the same.
