Awakened ~ T.C Matson ~ New Release and Review

Kelsie
I was just getting my life under control — new job, new friends, less past. Until I met him — this persistent and insanely sexy man who spoke few words. He stormed into my world with one rule — leave your heart out of it. I knew I had to walk away, but his grip was tighter than I ever expected. I had no idea my past intertwined with his present, yet it almost stood in the way of our future.

Adam
My life was exactly the way I wanted it — nothing of importance tying me down and endless strings of nameless and faceless women. That all changed when I met her. I gave her one rule, yet I couldn’t follow it. Her presence caused something inside me to snap and she awakened feelings and thoughts I had tucked away long ago — ones I knew caused pain. I had no control over what was happening. My only choice was to watch, unable to stop our worlds colliding. As both our pasts haunted us, everything around me shattered.

In the first two Fighter series books we met Levi's assistant/sidekick, Adam. We get to know him a little bit better in Awakened.
For the most part, I enjoyed this book. Unfortunately, there were several distraction and detracting factors that made it hard for me to give it the credit it probably deserves. I don't know if it's a case of the author's style and I not meshing or if it was something specific to this book, but I just didn't like it as much as I did Paige and Levi's story.
The two biggest struggles I had with this story were 1) Kelsie and Adam both end up declaring their love, etc, but I didn't really feel the investment in the relationship on Adam's part. 2) The Ex factor. It didn't make sense to me that Kelsie's ex husband would literally fight for her just to give up.
I think this is a good book and it's worth a read, especially if you have read the previous two, I'm just not sure it's the strongest entry in the series.

UnExpected ~ TC Matson ~ Review

Paige
Turns out he was everything I ever wanted—charming, loving, and super sexy. But I knew being with Levi, the gorgeous MMA fighter every woman wanted, was going to be difficult. Especially since he’s so far away training a beautiful up-and-coming female fighter, teaching the very thing he thrives on. I just didn’t realize how damaging and strenuous this would be to our relationship. With so many twists and turns, unfortunately, we both got blindsided by the unexpected.

Levi
I’m everything she wants and surprisingly, she was everything I needed. Quickly she became my very existence—my heartbeat. Everything around me faded as she became clear in view. And just because I’m affectionate toward her doesn’t mean I’ve changed. Don’t confuse my being in love with weakness. I’m still pretty damn perfect. I knew distance was going to be hard, but hell, this is agonizing.

***UnExpected is a continuance of Blindsided (The Fighter Series Book #1), beginning right where book 1 left off. It’s highly recommended you read Blindsided first.***

3.5 Stars - Worth A Reader's Time

I have to confess that if I had to rate this book by itself, it wouldn't be a 3.5 star book (it would be closer to a 3), but when combined with Blindsided, the whole story deserves the higher rating.

UnExpected is very well written and good conclusion to Paige and Levi's story. But, I will say that I wonder if this really needed to be a two book set. Both books, but especially the beginning of UnExpected seem to have a fair amount of repetitiveness. I sympathized with how both Paige and Levi felt, but it felt like we were more than 1/3 of the way into the book before anything of real import had happened.

If you have read Blindsided, then you will definitely enjoy seeing what happens next for our fighter and his lady. If you haven't read the first book, then I suggest you hold off on reading this one because it plops you right in the middle of their relationship. Ms. Matson is a newer author to me and I am looking forward to seeing what she comes up with next.

TC Matson loves to let her characters voices be heard. With a head full of stories, she puts her keyboard through a beating daily. Regularly, she visits the solidity of her writing cave, whether it be on the couch, at her desk, or in the corner hiding from her five-year-old. She’s an avid reader and is known to devour books within hours. As a romance junkie, Matson sets her sights to try to find stories that are relatable and real. She’s not a fan of vampires, fairies, or any other out of this world fiction. And understanding that love isn’t always instant and full of flowers…her writing mirrors it. She isn’t afraid to push the envelope and touch the bases of uncomfortable situations. Matson resides in the peaceful Piedmont area of North Carolina, where she stays hopped up on caffeine and chasing children. She has a relatively normal life managing her home, or as she calls it, her loony bin. Chaos is indefinite and a sense of humor is absolutely a must.

What are you working on now?

Unexpected (The Fighter Series Book #2)

Do you get to write full time or do you have a "day" job?

I have an “all the time” job. I’m a stay at home mom of 3 kids. To be specific—all boys. I’m surrounded by testosterone and tantrums, teenage mood swings and frumps, dirt and bugs. You name it, I’ve probably seen it. Except Australia sized bugs. Nope! No thank you. I’d die if I had a spider the size of my head rustle past me. Eeek NO!

I have a limited time to write. Sometimes I’m lucky to have an hour a week, other times I’m blessed to have a full day.
Favorite part of being an author?

There is no way either one of these outweighs each other. They’re equal in my mind.

  •  First, the ability to get the voices out of my head and onto paper is wonderful! Makes me sound a little coo-coo, huh? I’m not. No need to commit me to the loony bin…although, that could be a vacation for me. Hmm…something for me to ponder on.

  • Second, my readers. I have the best readers/fans ever. They send me messages, emails, comments, and snail mail that are uplifting (for the most part) and downright motivating. My readers are marvelous and the reason why I push myself so hard. I’ve had messages ranging from “OMG!! That was the best book ever!” to “Thank you.” That does something to my heart. Seriously, it gives me the ‘feels.’ I’ve met some pretty fantastic people.

Scariest part of being an author?

Publishing. Not only is it exciting, but it’s mentally taxing. I drown in concerns. Think about it: my novels are my babies. Will you like it? Will you hate it? Did I finalize the right cover? Did my editor and proofers miss anything? The ol’ “What if” beats me down. The unknown can be wicked.Picture this: you strip down naked and stroll through busy downtown. Are your nerves shot? Hi!! Welcome to my world.

Who are your favorites to read?

R.K. Lilley has and will always have my heart.

Harper Bentley, Alexa Keith, Anne Mercier, Skyla Madi, Callie Hart, Christina Lauren, Lea Griffith, CJ Wells, Emma Chase just to name a few. ;)
If you had $1 Million to giveaway, what would you do with the money?

Of course I’d set my kids up to live comfortably. I’d give them enough to ensure they don’t live check to check, but they definitely will have to work.

The rest I'd love to donate it to a local organization—Purple Heart Homes. Long story short, this organization supports and helps all Vets regardless of the war they were in, their rankings, or the branch they served by building or renovating homes to help suffice their disabilities at no cost to the Veteran. For more information, check out the website. https://www.purplehearthomesusa.org/

One piece of advice for an aspiring writer?

DO NOT GIVE UP! Keep pushing yourself. I promise the light at the end of the tunnel isn’t a train regardless of how loud that horn sounds. Don’t be afraid to learn and evolve because it’s going to happen. Listen to your readers, even the negative things. Make sure you grow thick skin because constructive criticism comes in all shapes and sizes. You’ll learn from it. Find your groove and write for YOU! Just keep going!!

Blindsided (The Fighter Series #1) ~ T.C. Matson ~ Review

Paige
He’s everything I’ve never wanted—an egotistical womanizing MMA fighter. Yes, he’s easy on the eyes with a body to die for, blue eyes to fall into, and a smile that will make your heart skip beats. His smell is intoxicating, and he’s fun to be around, but I’m not interested in being another notch in his bed post. I can’t lie and say I haven’t thought about what it would be like, I have. Unfortunately, I know a woman like me can’t make a man like him settle down.

Levi
Look at me, I’m everything she wants—a sexy MMA fighter who no one can resist. What? I can’t help they all want me. I know she fantasizes about my naked body on top of hers, who doesn’t? But she has a telltale sign—her glassy green eyes, her crimson red cheeks, and the sweat that glistens her face—she wants me. I’ve never had to chase, you know, put in effort to get the girl in bed, but she is sending me on the longest treasure hunt I’ve ever experienced. Not even my smile can make her panties drop. But somehow, somewhere in the mix of chasing her, I’ve developed feelings. This cannot be happening.

3.5 stars - Worth A Reader's Time

This is a book that I honestly liked right up until the end, then I was a little frustrated by it.

We meet Paige and Levi the day that they first meet each other. She is a hard working waitress/bartender who catches his attention and holds it when she doesn't fall for his advances right away. He is an up and coming fighter who is used to getting what he wants.

I enjoyed Paige's sense of self worth and her feisty attitude. Levi's arrogance and determination were entertaining and some of his first person dialogue was hilarious. These two spent a lot - almost too much- of time dancing back and forth as "friends" before Paige decided to go for it with Levi. Once they were together, the chasing on again/off again continued and sometimes felt repetitive. I have the sense that the ending was meant to intrigue us for the next installment. It did that, but it also left me with a sense of the book being unfinished.

This is a debut work and shows a lot of promise by the author. I definitely want to see what happens to Paige and Levi next, but I do feel like more of their story could have been told here.
