Sweet Little Lies by Jill Shalvis

Choose the one guy you can’t have . . .

As captain of a San Francisco Bay tour boat, Pru can handle rough seas—the hard part is life on dry land. Pru loves her new apartment and her neighbors; problem is, she’s in danger of stumbling into love with Mr. Right for Anybody But Her.

Fall for him—hard . . .

Pub owner Finn O’Riley is six-foot-plus of hard-working hottie who always makes time for his friends. When Pru becomes one of them, she discovers how amazing it feels to be on the receiving end of that deep green gaze. But when a freak accident involving darts (don’t ask) leads to shirtless first aid, things rush way past the friend zone. Fast. And then tell him the truth. Pru only wants Finn to be happy; it’s what she wishes for at the historic fountain that’s supposed to grant her heart’s desire. But wanting him for herself is a different story—because Pru’s been keeping a secret that could change everything. . . .

I don't know if there is anything better than the first book in a new series, especially from such a steadfast author as Shalvis. Sweet Little Lies introduces us to the gang of Heartbreaker Bay in San Francisco, focusing on Finn and Lexi just after she moves to the neighborhood.

When I pick up a book by Ms. Shalvis, I expect certain things. I expect fun characters who have some emotional baggage, a great supporting cast, a little sexy time, and lots of humor. Sweet Little Lies definitely delivers in all aspects. Finn is adorably Alpha and has a fantastic group of friends. Lexi and her secret move in and instant sparks lead to all kinds of fun (and some genuinely sweet) moments.

The emotional vibe if this book was a smidge darker than some of Shalvis' previous series, but I appreciated the difference. I am definitely looking forward to seeing where she takes this series.

Nobody But You ~ Jill Shalvis ~ COMING SOON, EXCERPT, & REVIEW

About NOBODY BUT YOU

When Jacob was injured in the war, it changed him for life. Now all he wants to do is come home to Cedar Ridge, settle in at his lakeside cabin and get some much-needed peace and quiet. But there's no peace to be had when he finds a spitfire of a woman camping out on his property. Half the time he's not sure whether he wants to spank her or kiss--or maybe both. He's in a dark place and a dark mood, and here's this wildly hot woman who is also funny and light and may be the balm be needs to soothe his aching soul.
Sophie Marren is pretty much penniless after leaving her abusive husband. She doesn't have the money to pay rent or the slip fees for docking the boat where she's been sleeping. She was getting along just perfectly until the good-looking, brooding, I'm-too-sexy-for-myself guy moves into the lake cabin that the slip belongs to. Sure he's hot as the noon sun with those dark lens and even darker 'tude, but god forbid she tie herself to another man who's always telling her what to do. But the more she gets to know Jacob, the more she sees how willing he is to battle for her wounded heart...a battle she might just let him win.

Excerpt

She eyed the bench a long beat but did eventually sit, perching primly as far from him as she could get and yet still be close enough to grab the bottle.

Smart woman.

She took the Scotch and drank. Her eyes watered and she coughed as she handed it to him. With a sigh, she leaned back to study the night sky. Her bared throat was slim and creamy smooth. An unexpected temptation. Remembering the flash of pain and vulnerability she’d unwittingly revealed, and that for whatever reason he’d somehow added to it, he spoke. “I’m sorry.”

She glanced at him as if she’d never heard a man apologize before in her life. “For…breathing?” she asked. “Having a penis? What?”

“You were upset because you didn’t know I was a Kincaid.”

She sighed. “That was just me looking for a reason to be mad at you so I wouldn’t…”

She bit her lower lip, clearly not wanting to go on.

But now he had to know. “So you wouldn’t what?”

“Nothing,” she said. “It’s just that I’m trying to make better choices.”

“Of which I wouldn’t be one.”

“It’s not necessarily your fault,” she said. “It’s that you’re a man.”

“Guilty as charged.”

“And I’m off men right now.”

“And on…women?” he asked with admittedly more than a little fascination.

She rolled her eyes. “I’m on no one, but thank you for proving my point on men.”

“I get that,” he said. “But being off men doesn’t seem to be making you very happy, or sound like a whole lot of fun.”

“Maybe I don’t need fun.”

He understood that. He’d felt the same way since Brett died. “What do you need?” he asked, honestly wanting to know more about her.

Instead of answering, she reached for the bottle. He waited until she met his gaze before letting go.
“Nothing,” she said a little too quickly. “Everything’s…perfect.”

“And your glass is half full,” he said. “So you’ve said.”

But he didn’t believe her. “How about a game?”

“I don’t play games.”

Now, that wasn’t exactly true. Whether she knew it or not, she’d been playing with  his head since he’d first laid eyes on her. “Three truths and a lie,” he said.

She stared at him. “As in you tell me three truths and a lie, and I pick out the lie?”

 “Yes.”

She considered this. “What do I get if I win?”

“What do you want?”

For the briefest of beats, her gaze dropped to his mouth.

Oh, hell yeah, he thought. Want me…

“My first boyfriend taught me that game,” she said.

“What did the winner get?”

“A kiss.”

Definitely still playing with his head… “Is that what you want, Sophie? A kiss?”

Again she stared at his mouth before dropping eye contact and wrapping that eye-stopping pink robe tighter around her body. “Do you?” she asked.

“Hell yes.”

Her gaze flew to his.

“Problem is,” he said conversationally, “if I kissed you, I don’t think I’d be able to stop.”

Her mouth literally fell open. The pulse at the base of her throat jumped. And she seemed to lose her words.

He went on. “But you should know, I don’t lose. That means you’ll have to tell me three truths and a lie.” And he’d hopefully get to know more about her.
She closed her mouth to bite her lower lip in what could’ve been indecision or excitement. Obviously he was hoping for the latter. “But hey, if you’re not sure you can handle losing, we can just forget about it,” he said.

The challenge lifted her chin and put sparks in her eyes. That’s it, babe. Show me what you’ve got.

“Bring it,” she said.

3.5 Stars - Worth a Readers's Time

In the third installment of the Cedar Ridge Series, Jill Shalvis brings the prodigal brother home to the Kincaid family. Jacob left 9 years ago after a falling out with his twin, Hud, and joined the military. The loss of a dear friend has him hoping to mend fences to move forward. His homecoming has an element of excitement thrown in via Sophie, the beautiful woman illegally parking her boat on his dock.

Given the situation Jacob was dealing with when he came back to Cedar Ridge, I honestly expected him to be the more jaded person in the relationship. I found it interesting that it was Sophie who was reluctant to pursue things as she dealt with the frustrations her ex husband heaped on her. I enjoyed watching Jacob and Sophie together. They seemed to bring out the best in each other and he seemed to have a talent for giving her exactly what she needed.

Nobody But You is a book I really wanted to give 4 stars too, but couldn't do it. One of the driving forces behind Jacob's return to Cedar Ridge was the mending of fences with his family. This is a part of the story line that I would have liked to have seen more time devoted to. I loved the interactions between Jacob and Sophie, but would have appreciated seeing him spend more time working on his relationship with Hud.

Overall, Nobody But You is a good read. It's a great addition to Shalvis' library of work with a fun, sexy hero and a quirky, independent heroine. I'll definitely be back to Cedar Ridge.

My Kind of Wonderful ~ Jill Shalvis ~ COMING SOON and REVIEW

Jill Shalvis' latest entry in the Cedar Ridge series, My Kind of Wonderful, is coming soon. See what we thought....

Coming December 22!

UNEXPECTED AND UNDENIABLE...

Bailey Moore has an agenda: skiing in the Rockies, exploring castles in Europe, ballroom dancing in Argentina. Now that she has a second lease on life, she's determined not to miss a thing. What she doesn't realize is that item #1 comes with a six-foot-one ski god hot enough to melt a polar ice cap. She doesn't want to miss out on him either, but Hudson Kincaid isn't the type of guy to love and let go. And as gorgeous as Cedar Ridge is, she's not planning to stick around.

As head of ski patrol at his family's resort, Hud thinks he's seen it all. But never has he run into someone like Bailey. She might look delicate, but her attitude is all firecracker. And her infectious joy touches something deep within him that he's been missing far too long. Now he'll just have to convince Bailey to take a chance on her biggest adventure yet . . . something rare and all kinds of wonderful.

The Kincaids of Cedar Ridge are back! This time we get to know Hudson (Hud), the brother in charge of ski patrol for the resort as well as a part time police officer. When first see Hud in My Kind of Wonderful, he has his hands full and really doesn't want or need anything else in his life. Then he meets Bailey, the graphic artist his mother hired to paint a mural at the family's resort. The funny thing is, that Bailey doesn't really want romance in her life right now either because she is finally cancer free after a 10 year battle.

I enjoyed both Hud and Bailey and I loved them together. Their story is typical Shalvis with the slightly wounded, Alpha type hero and the funny, strong heroine. Bailey (with some help from the other Kincaids) helped soften Hud up so that he could see that there is life outside of work and worry. Both characters have their struggles that make your heart hurt for them, but those moments make the laughter they bring each other much sweeter. Misunderstandings cause problems and I loved how they were resolved, I think it may have been one of the better "grand gesture" stories I've seen. Hud's brothers, sister, and sisters-in-law all play a big role in the story and provide great comic moments.

If you are a Jill Shalvis fan or brand new to her work, you will enjoy My Kind of Wonderful. My Kind of Wonderful is the second in the Cedar Ridge series, but it definitely stands on it's own as an independent story.
