Defenseless ~ Corinne Michaels ~Sneak Peek

Excerpt

I look around because the hair on the back of my neck prickles. “We need to get out of here.” Someone is here, watching, listening, and now it’s time to do what I do best. “I’ve missed you.” I smile while I use the tip of my finger to trace his jawline.
Mark’s eyes shift over my head as he pulls me flush against his body. We’re both facing exits. “I’ve missed you more,” he plays along.
This might just work. He’s on alert as well and senses something awry. His fingers splay across my lower back as he holds me close. “Maybe we should head back to my place so you can show me just how much.” I glance over his shoulder. His blonde hair falls in his eyes as he dips his head into my neck. I know the move, but a shiver runs down my spine.
“You’d like that, wouldn’t you?” I release a very low moan, which I didn’t give permission to escape. Mark’s lips glide across my skin.
I’m not sure he’s acting.
I’m not even sure that I am.
Then Mark reminds me this is serious. “There are two guys behind you.” His voice is low enough that only I can hear him. To anyone passing, we’re two lovers reacquainting ourselves. “One at my two o’clock, and the other is out of my view.”
“One just passed behind you twice. I think going toward my exit is best.” I snuggle closer. “I’m ready when you are.” The double meaning is meant for anyone to hear, but Mark should know it means I’m ready to disappear. “You’ll have to keep up, though.”
He leans back while cupping my face. His lips hover over mine. “I don’t have any problems keeping you satisfied, princess.”
My pulse spikes. I know he can hear it, feel it, see in my eyes that I’m affected. My breaths are shallow as his hands slowly make their way down my arms.
“Arrogant prick,” I mutter.
I can tell he’d be an incredible lover. His overconfidence would only play to my benefit. We’re both cut from the same cloth, ready to fight for dominance. He’d win, though. I can see it in his eyes. There would be no battle, Mark has already won. Right now, he controls me. He determines whether we kiss, what it’ll be like, and for the first time in my life—I surrender.
His lips come closer. “They’re closing in,” he whispers, his eyes locked on me. “Charlie?” he asks. “What?” My voice is barely audible.
“This will happen again when we don’t have to fight off people, and then you’ll be mine.” I don’t have time to reply. His lips crash down on mine as he spins me around so he leads our exit. The second our mouths collide, my brain disconnects. My fingers tangle in his hair, grabbing it to pull him close. Mark’s hands hold my face to his and he continues to guide me. I know we’re moving but I have no idea to where. In this instant, I don’t care. Never has someone made me feel so desperate for them. I never lose control, never feel so lost, yet right now, I am. I’m raw, exposed, and completely vulnerable.

A chance meeting between two young souls is all it took...

When Adalynne Fairweather was just a child, her entire life had already been planned. From Ivy League schools to a career in law, adventure was the one thing out of her reach. That was until a boy with bright green eyes and a monster truck t-shirt wandered into her back yard, giving the adventure she longed for.

Refuge can be found in the most unlikely places…
Damon Knight’s abusive home life left him longing for a childhood he never had—until he wandered into Adalynne’s yard. She took his hand, smiled at him, and even gave him a nickname. Fox. The woods became their escape—a place to flee from reality. He discovered music through Adalynne’s piano, and not long after that, she gave him a guitar. Little did he know that gift would change his life forever.

Years later, their age is not the only thing that’s changed...

Adalynne’s love for Fox took on a life of its own. As they begin to build their lives, her heart aches for him in ways she can’t understand. As they slowly begin to drift apart, Adalynne becomes more desperate to cling to their secret romance.

But Fox is no longer the bright-eyed child from the woods. Her shy, beautiful Fox has grown into a dark, troubled man with a guitar. And when her last attempt to salvage their relationship breaks Adalynne’s heart, catching Fox a second time seems just out of her reach.

★EXCERPT★
When the set finished the band exited the stage. Adalynne watched Fox leave and she realized how much she missed him. An unbearable ache formed in her chest. People began shuffling around the room and music blasted on the speakers surrounding them. A heavy beat thrummed through the entire club, keeping the good mood alive and thriving in the many bodies that lined the floor.
“I’m going to check my messages.” Adalynne held up her phone. “I can’t hear anything here.” She didn’t wait for anyone to respond. Leaving her seat, she headed toward the back of the bar toward the restrooms.
“I’m coming with you.” Katie jumped up and followed on Adalynne’s heels through the crowded floor of people. When they were away from the guys, Katie pulled up beside her. “What was going on with you and Brolan Pierce? Do you know him? Please tell me you know him. You were practically eye doing each other.” Katie looked up at Adalynne’s face. “Oh my God! You know the lead singer of Outcome? Why didn’t you tell me you knew him? Is he the one you’re so hung up on?” Katie’s eyes could not get any wider as she stared at her. Her nails were digging into Adalynne’s arm.
“Katie, please be quiet.” Adalynne noticed the girls waiting in the bathroom line turning to observe their conversation. “Yes, I know him and I didn’t tell you because that’s not his real name. I didn’t know it until he walked onstage. It was a long time ago. Anyway, I’m not that hung up.”
“Oh please. You barely look at all the hot guys that practically drool on you. Look at Matthew over there. He’s not used to having to work to gain a girl’s attention. He’s used to girls handing him a free pass to their vaginas. Besides, I have never seen two people look at each other like that. I thought he was going to jump off the stage. It was beyond attraction.” Katie looked like she was going to swoon as she leaned against the wall.
“Do me a favor and forget about it.” Adalynne tried to dismiss their conversation. She listened to the message her mother left telling her everything was still fine.
“Why should I forget? You obviously can’t.” Katie folded her arms across her chest. She stomped her foot defiantly. “You cannot let this opportunity slip by. I seriously want to strangle you! You should be asking to speak with him. He owes you that much after he eye-fucked the hell out of you onstage!”
“Oh my god, Katie! It wasn’t like that. He was probably just surprised to see me.” Adalynne shrugged her shoulders and tried to seem casual. “He never wanted me like that and he doesn’t now.”
“Are you Adalynne?” A tall man dressed completely in black came to a stop in front of her. He looked like he walked out of the gym after spending most of his life there. A black shirt stretched over his massive chest, his hair was cropped short, and his severe eyes glared at her with a very serious expression. He had the science of intimidation down perfectly and Adalynne just nodded at his question, backing up against the wall.
“Will you follow me?” he continued, taking a step back, expecting her to comply but halted when she did not move.
“Why?” she asked when he looked back at her.
“You are requested by Mr. Pierce,” he stated simply, his patience wearing thin.
“I’ll cover for you!” Katie pushed Adalynne toward the large security guard. Adalynne looked back over her shoulder at Katie, who continued to wave her on encouragingly. The eyes of all the other girls who witnessed the scene stared after her as well.
Adalynne tried to calm her breathing as she followed the man through a dark, narrow hallway until he came to a door and knocked. The door opened narrowly but Adalynne couldn’t see in the room at her angle.
“Adalynne,” he said to the person who opened the door. The door closed and a moment later it swung open wide and Adalynne watched the band members leave the room. They nodded approvingly at her. The one she recognized from the drums spoke to her as he passed. “Hello there, beautiful.” Adalynne tried to manage a smile in return but she was overwhelmed with nerves. He smiled widely at her before continuing down the hall with the others.
Adalynne didn’t move. Her feet felt planted in place until the security guard gave her a gentle nudge of encouragement. She walked in slowly and he closed the door behind her, narrowly missing her. Adalynne took in the room. The sofas were covered in discarded clothing. The walls were covered with posters and framed photographs.
Fox walked out of a connecting room with a beer in his hand. His hair was messy like he had just run his fingers through it. He leaned against the door frame and stared at her from across the room. The emotions that overcame her were crippling. She had been living so long without her heart and now it was right in front of her and yet so far. She couldn’t think of anything more striking than his muscled lean frame. The way his jeans hung so low and how his shirt hugged his body that held a promise of so much pleasure. He was a drug to her and she was addicted to him in every sense of the word.
“You are so beautiful.” His voice was raw from singing. He walked over to the sofa and sat down, not taking his eyes off her. “I can’t get you out of my fucking head.” Fox ran his hand down over his face.

3.5 Stars ~ Would recommend to a friend/Review copy provided by author

This is my second book by Aimee McNeil and I have to admit that I liked this one better. I don't know if it was the story or the author becoming a more seasoned story teller, but I really did enjoy this book more than the previous effort.
Six year old Adalynne befriends six year old Damon and a lifelong relationship develops. Their friendship is its own little world where they are Bee and Fox and the outside doesn't exist. Fast forward 12 years and Damon breaks her heart for the first time and walks out of her life. We follow Adalynne as she tries to make her way through the world and forget about her Fox. Life brings them together over and over just to have him push her away again. There were times when the storytelling felt a little stiff, but overall I enjoyed Adalynne's story. It was refreshing to watch her blossom into a strong young woman who pushed against her boundaries to live the life she wanted. It was nice to see her invest in the people, projects, and relationships that were important to her.
Catching Fox is told from Adalynne's point of view and I would have enjoyed knowing more about Fox early on. His character was frustrating and I didn't understand Addie's connection with him until much later when a secret was revealed. Overall, Catching Fox is worth the time to read. I am looking forward to see what the author has for us next.

Wicked Lust

Wicked Lust (The Wicked Horse Series Book #2)
Sawyer Bennett
Release Date: January 5, 2016
Synopsis:
Cain Bonham is as big and bad as they come. After serving in the Marines, he’s returned home to Wyoming and now works as head of security at the exclusive sex club, The Wicked Horse. His job is to protect not only the patrons, but to zealously guard the secret existence of the club itself. Sloane Preston is all about discovering secrets. As an undercover reporter, she’s determined to reveal the truth behind the facade of The Wicked Horse and expose it for all the world to see. She just didn’t count on her pathway into the club coming at the hands of one gorgeously scarred and bad ass bouncer who manages to easily possess her body and soul. While Cain’s not looking for anyone to catch his eye, Sloane did it all the same, and he’s not bemoaning the fact that she’s as wickedly kinky as he is. As both get caught up in the sinful fantasies that only The Wicked Horse can create, secrets and loyalties will be tested and hearts will risk being broken. **Warning: this book has sex in it. Lots of sex. Dirty sex. The Wicked Horse Series is a bit different than what Sawyer Bennett normally writes. While you’ll still enjoy fabulous characters, a suspenseful story, some witty banter and an epic romance, there’s just… a lot of sex. You’ve been warned.

I just finished Wicked Lust and... WOW! I'm pretty sure my kindle started smoking in a couple of places as I read the book!

When I read books like Wicked Lust (and Wicked Fall before it) part of me is always nervous because I worry if there will actually be a story in there with all of the steamy sexy times. Ms. Bennett does a great job of balancing the sexy (and naughty) elements with the story and romance between Cain and Sloan.

On the surface, I would have said that Cain was someone who would never fall in love and I knew early on that the pretenses Sloan was living under would blow up in her face. What I didn't expect was the gentle side that we got to see of Cain and the way he and Sloan just clicked together. I also didn't expect the way Bridger stepped in to make sure that our two lovers found the right resolution to their story.

I found myself rooting for Cain and Sloan - and even falling a little in love with Cain myself. The cast of secondary characters isn't very big and most of then just brush against the story. Wicked Lust is a stand alone work, but it will make more sense to a reader who has read Wicked Fall first. There is back story contained in Wicked Fall that adds to the richness of this book. I am looking forward to see where Rand's story takes us and our friend's at the Wicked Horse.

Always You ~ Stephanie Rose ~ Review

To Samantha Christensen, Lucas Hunter was always the guy—the sexy, smart and unattainable man she pined for throughout college.

To Lucas, she was a treasured friend, a younger sister he felt the need to protect. She had a choice—to wait and hope, or to settle.

When they meet again years later, Lucas looks at Samantha and sees a woman he wants—even though she’s not free to take. As they renew their friendship he finds he’s falling hard, and can’t accept any less than all of her. Samantha realizes there’s hope with Lucas. Will she finally have a chance to be happy with the man she’s always loved, or will obligations and insecurities stand in their way? Can Samantha and Lucas convince each other that they belong together? That it was Always You?

Always You is the first novel in the Second Chances series. Each novel will be an interconnected standalone about second chances at love. Due to sexual situations, its recommended for readers 18 and up.

My Always You confession - I was a little afraid to read it. Why you ask? I knew that Samantha - our heroine was married when she started her relationship with Lucas, the hero. I was afraid that would make it hard for me to embrace her and after all of the awesome things I have heard about Lucas, I really wanted to be able to like her too.

I didn't need to worry! The way Ms. Rose told Samantha and Lucas' story, I couldn't help but cheer for them both and root for Samantha's marriage to be a thing of the past. This story is lighter than Only You (the connected follow up story), but still emotional. You are pulled into the story and can easily put yourself in the characters shoes as they move through the challenges they face. This is definitely a book I wish I had read earlier and recommend.

Just Stop Me ~ Rosalind James ~ NEW RELEASE

Sometimes you have to run away to find yourself.

Lots of young women dream of being a princess. Nina Jones isn’t one of them. After escaping from her palace/prison by burying herself under sacks of fertilizer, she ends up in a beach cottage on New Zealand’s South Island. She’s meant to be looking after a cantankerous widower. Too bad she doesn’t know how to boil an egg.

Iain McCormick may be an All Black, a member of New Zealand’s elite rugby team, and a bona fide celebrity. During the offseason, though, he’s meant to be a regular Kiwi bloke. A good son, a good neighbor, and a good citizen. But civility comes harder when you’ve been dumped at the altar. He doesn’t need anybody he has to look out for. He definitely doesn’t need to fall in love. Yeah, right.

Note: This book, like New Zealand, contains some steam. In fact, it gets downright hot in a few places, and more than a little adventurous. If that isn't your cuppa, maybe visit another country . . . er, book.

A Lover's Lament ~ KL Grayson and BT Urruela ~ REVIEW

In a matter of seconds my entire world changed, and it was in that moment that I stopped living and simply began to exist. In my grief, I sent a letter to the first boy I ever loved. I hoped in writing it I’d find some peace from the nightmare I was living, some solace in my anger. I didn’t expect him to write back. I wasn’t prepared for his words, and I certainly wasn’t ready for the impact this soldier would have on my life. A deep-rooted hate transformed into friendship, and then molded into a love like I’d never known before. Sergeant Devin Ulysses Clay did what I couldn’t: he put the shattered pieces of my heart back together, restoring my faith in humanity and teaching me how to live again. But now that I’m whole, I have a decision to make. Do I return to my life as I knew it and the fiancé I left behind, or do I walk away from it all for the only man to ever break my heart?

 ***

I’ve been living in hell, but you won’t hear me complain. These men depend on me, as I do them, and this brotherhood is the only family I’ve ever known. The Army saved me from a callous mother and a life on the wrong side of the tracks that was quickly spiraling out of control. So unlike most of the men in my platoon, going home wasn’t something I longed for. I was content overseas, spending my days defending this country that gave me my life back. Fighting became my new normal … until her. A letter from Katie Devora—a letter that I almost didn’t open. Her words put a fire back inside of me that I didn’t know I’d lost. She gave me hope during a time when I was fighting every day just to stay alive, and now it’s time I fight for her.

This is a book I have been wanting to read since it was released and I am so glad I finally had the chance. I loved the premise of high school friends/sweethearts reconnecting with each other when they both really needed it - especially in a semi random/ must have been fate fashion. Both Katie and Devin are great characters that you can't help but like and root for. You want them to be successful in their individual struggles as well as a couple. The fact that one of the authors served in the military and dealt with some of the issues presented in the book gave it a sense of realism that might have been missing otherwise. This was my first book by both of the authors and I will definitely be checking out their other works in the future.
