The duo behind Christina Lauren is one that I can depend on for delivering an enjoyable read and The Honey Don’t List is no exception.

Carey and James are the couple at the center of our story. They have the unenviable job of keeping TV’s “it” couple together while their “perfect” image unravels.

Both Carey and James were easy to like and fairly easy to relate to. I think almost everyone has woken up at one point and asked themselves “how did this become my life?” I appreciated the growth both of them went through. Carey’s was more internal and had a “why this and what’s next” vibe where for James it was more an issue of him starting to look outside himself and taking control.

Whether intentional or not, the Honey Don’t List includes several poignant messages for anyone. The ideas of standing up for yourself, looking out for others, and not losing the good things for the next thing are all woven into this well written and entertaining story.

Blocked (Gold Hockey, #1)Blocked by Elise Faber

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Book purchased for "Free"

Ms Faber is an author I've read before, but this was the first of her hockey books that I've read and now I am very curious about the Gold hockey players.

Brit is a female goalie who has worked her way to being a back up NHL goalie, the first woman to do so. The deck is stacked against her when she arrives and it seems to get worse at first. I liked Brit, she's worked hard to get to where she is, but she maintains her femininity while doing so.

Stefan is the team captain who has a few struggles of his own. I liked him from the beginning too; He appeared to be a genuinely good guy and strong teammate. The chemistry between these two was intense from the beginning, but one of my favorite parts about Stefan was that he seem to appreciate where Brit was coming from and respected that.

Overall, I enjoyed this story. There were a couple of places that seemed over the top, but they really fall under the bucket of artistic license. Ms Faber did an excellent job of blending this story along with the cast building that will allow the series to grow.

This was a free read I picked up from a new to me author. If I were an emoji this book would be a “meh.”

I feel bad saying that because it’s not a bad book, it just a book that I didn’t connect with. Going into Just a Fling, I felt like I was missing information. This is the first book in the series, but is the series a crossover from something else? I don’t know....

Neither Hudson nor Stella were super easy to like or support. Some of that maybe personal opinion, but i felt they were a bit flat and struggled with understanding their motivations.

Add in wishy washy actions, a plot that just didn’t gel for me, and several major editing mistakes and this just wasn’t a book I loved.

Review Round Up ~ March 15

Catherine Bybee is an author that I go into her books expecting to enjoy them and while My Way To You is different than her previous work, the enjoyment factor is definitely there.

Ms Bybee leans on her own personal experience here to craft a story that emphasize perseverance, strength of character, and finding a figurative port in the storm in an unlikely place.

Parker is a female lead that you can’t help but root for. She is young in years, but has an amazing strength of character that has served her and her siblings well. Colin was the perfect pair for her as he appreciated her strengths and had the maturity to listen and let her lead when needed.

This is a well written book that covers a lot of ground in addition to having a core romantic story. We see great sibling relationships and friendships surround this family that once felt like an island. The supporting cast is fairly small, but that just means I am that much more curious about what happens next in a Canyon Creek. I am hopeful that there will be more books about this group - and a big part of that is wanting to know what comes next for Parker and Colin.

Free Prime Read

This is a book I picked up for free and really wanted to like but couldn’t quite get there.
The premise is sweet.... girl returns home, reconnects with a high school crush and they fall in love. The issue I had was with execution.
My biggest issue - the editing! There is a paragraph early on that has absolutely no context. It literally pops out of nowhere and left me so confused. There are several other places where it felt like a strong editor would have been useful. Given that this book is approximately 2 years old and being held out as a promo, it seems like the editing issues should have been fixed.
Erin and Jake (our characters) were also a bit flat. I did appreciate Erin’s maturing during the story, but was very confused by Jake. He claimed to want to be a good dad, but almost every time we saw him with his daughter he was letting her leave with someone else.
There also seemed to be a lot of setting things up for future stories for secondary characters, but not enough development to really get to know anyone.
I been excite about this read and while it was entertaining, it wasn’t what I hoped for.

Julia Wolf is a new author to me and I am so glad I found her with Unrequited! This is a well written story about redemption, being true to yourself, and fighting for what (or who) you love.

Maeve is a great leading lady. At 23 she knows who she is and what her goals are. She's been knocked down, but never out. Reconnecting with old friends and an old crush changes the course of her life and it was awesome to see her embrace the chance and run with it. I enjoyed seeing her being brave enough to do what she loved and to fight for her place in that world.

Santi is a leading man that I was prepared not to like, but how he treated Maeve as they spent more time together redeemed him and made him a character that I could root for.

The secondary cast of Unrequited is fairly small, mainly the band and a few select friends/family members. I was a little confused as to what Yael's role is (other than being a sister and friend to characters). These were a great group to get to know and I will definitely be looking forward to more stories about this band!
