Ms Jackson has done it again and delivered a compelling addition to the series surrounding the band Carolina George. In Beneath the Stars, we get to spend time getting to know the final member of the band, bassist Rhys Manning.

Rhys has been the perineal “good time” guy in the previous books surrounding the band, here Ms Jackson reveals the layers and real person behind the larger than life stage persona. He is paired with Maggie (another secondary character that has played key roles in previous books in the series.)

I loved these two characters together. Their connection radiated off the page and had me rooting for them to figure out a way through the baggage and trials that surrounded them. As with each book in this series, there was a high intrigue level that kept me guessing until the very end.

One of the things I loved about this book is also the thing that kept it from being a full 5 star read for me. While Beneath the Stars is technically a stand alone read, it is also strongly tied to the previous books. In this book, there are potential spoilers if you are reading the series out of order. Key parts of the back story for Rhys and Maggie is also woven into the previous installments in the series and reading in order will make the over all series experience better.

“It’s been a long time since we danced together.”
She doesn’t look up, but her smile grows. “It was homecoming, first dance of the year.”
“And the last. I still can’t believe you didn’t go to prom with me. All high school romances end at the prom.”
Her nose curls. “We were not a high school romance.”

“This Chad guy sounds like a real champ,” he says.

“I’m the moron that married him.”

I pick at the edge of the table to keep from meeting his eyes.

Chad was not my best work. Not my best choice, or the greatest guy I’ve ever dated, nor am I proud that I went through with the whole thing. But I did it and I can’t change it. I need to figure out how to accept all that.

“I’m sure you had great intentions,” Holden says.

“I did. Want to know how deep his intentions ran?” I strum my fingers against the tabletop as I look up at him. “He left me by sticking a note to the kitchen table with a dollop of strawberry jelly.”

I blow out a breath and regret word-vomiting all that. It was too deep. Too raw and real. Opening up to Holden is too easy, and I probably just ruined the mood.

He watches me for a few seconds before grinning. “He didn’t even use grape? Rude.”

I smile, relieved that he didn’t dig deeper. “Right? He didn’t even use grape on his sandwiches.”

“Big red flag right there,” he says, pointing a finger my way.

“You know, Gramma always said not to marry a man that cuts the crusts off his peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.”

“And why is that?”

“Because that’s an indication that someone doesn’t like boundaries. Guess I should’ve listened to her. He even cut the crusts off his grilled cheese.”

He gasps, his jaw falling to the table in mock horror. “That’s serial-killer shit right there.”

“Hey, I don’t know what he’s been doing the last couple of years of his life.” I take a napkin from the dispenser. “You might be right.”

“So why did you marry him? You didn’t get serial-killer vibes from the start?”

It’s a question I’ve asked myself a million times, because down deep, I knew it wasn’t right for me. I just ignored my gut and did it anyway.

Like You Love Me starts a brand new small town series from Adriana Locke. Here we meet the Bates siblings, focusing on the youngest, Sophie. In this friends to lovers read, we see Sophie reconnect with childhood friend, Holden.

Ms Locke does an excellent job of taking this unusual set of circumstances and using it to show both Sophie and Holden that what is really important in life might be a bit different than what they thought... and letting them figure out what’s right.

I enjoyed getting to spend time with these two. The way they reconnected was refreshing and I loved their interactions with friends and family around their small town. I also liked that Ms Locke kept me guessing a bit. With what was going on with Liv (Sophie’s sister) I have expected the story to resolve itself in one direction, but.....

Speaking of Liv (and Jobe, Sophie’s brother) the hints regarding what might be happening next for her have me very curious as to where this series might go. I am hoping to see more of Honey Creek soon!
