What happens when the worst day of your life turns out to be one of the best things that can happen to you?Gwen is engaged to Bash when they go to the wedding of an acquaintance. She knows something is up, but doesn't think too much about it UNTIL Bash stops the wedding to run off with the bride. A month later, she moves into an a new apartment and discovers that her neighbor is none other than the jilted groom, Eli.
What follows is a fantastic, well written story of two people who aren't sure they like each other, but can understand what the other is feeling. It was sweet to watch them drift from animosity to friendship and then slide into a relationship before either of them realized it was happening. Eli and Gwen are both interesting characters and while neither is perfect, they are almost more likable for their flaws. It seemed poetic to me that the moment Eli realized he wanted more than friendship was also the first time Gwen and the former bride-to-be came face to face. I appreciated the maturity and grace Gwen showed when dealing with the unfaithful Hannah by defending herself and Eli.
The romance between Eli and Gwen wasn't smooth, but the way their struggles were portrayed showed a fairly realistic glimpse into the life of a relationship. Their were times when she needed to fight for him and times when he needed to fight for her. The secondary cast was small, but impactful. My favorite - the dog, he was a complete scene stealer!
I truly enjoyed this escape into the world of Eli and Gwen and am now curious to check out J.J. McAvoy's backlist!
