Review Round Up ~ July 27

TBR Reads:

Swan LightSwan Light by Phoebe Rowe

3.5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Prime First Read

I picked this up as a “prime first” read several months ago and finally had a chance to read it. This is an interesting event-driven story told in alternating timelines from multiple points of view. In the 1913 timeline, we see mainly from Swan. In 2014 it’s Mari.

Swan Light is a slow starter but picks up quickly around the 40% mark. The 1913 timeline has significant drama in the town of Norman Cliffs and the lighthouse. The 2014 timeline has a hefty amount of intrigue both in the modern day and as Mari researches the past.

I found myself enjoying the story and anticipation built as events in both timelines came to their conclusion. Unfortunately, I left the story feeling a bit unsatisfied for several reasons.
One was the allusion to a romance between Mari and Julian (her partner in adventure). It felt as if this was just thrown in and not really developed. Another reason related to Swan (and why Mari was in town in the first place) that was the fact the research was never truly finished. We are left to assume we know what happened to Swan. What I want to know is why did the Norman family flee town, why was Swan so completely forgotten, and why did the Roland brothers seem to lose touch?

There are so many interesting intersections here that I feel the author could have explored a bit more and left us with a more robust finish to the book.

This was a quick, fun novella introducing a new series.
Harlow was introduced in the Southern series and is the child of Casey and Olivia. She meets Travis on the first day of vet school.
They are amazing together until they aren’t. I am curious to see what happens to them next!

Mine to Have (Southern Wedding #1)Mine to Have by Natasha Madison

Mine to have features Harlow (2nd generation from the Southern Series) and Travis. We met them initially in the novella Mine to Kiss. This picks up four years later.

I have slightly mixed feelings here.....
On one hand, I love the idea that these two were "it" for each other and it took time for the timing to be right. But..... When I consider the reason they were apart in the first place and where they reconnected, I struggle with plausibility.

I had to set a few of those issues aside and just appreciate the book for the "fun" factor. This was definitely enjoyable. There is a fairly large secondary cast and loyal followers will be glad to get caught up on previous main characters. We get to know Travis's sisters a bit here as well. I am looking forward to seeing if they have their own stories.
