Review RoundUp ~ April 17

New Releases:

The New HusbandThe New Husband by D.J. Palmer

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Copy Provided by Publisher via Net Galley

DJ Palmer is a new author to me and this is a book I picked up because the story sounded unique and like something I hadn’t read before. The New Husband took a little bit for me to get into, but once I did, I had a hard time putting it down.

Our protagonist, Nina, is someone easy to relate to. It was easy to put myself in her shoes as a mother trying to move on from a traumatizing event. It was even easy to see how she could dismiss things creating a less than healthy environment.

The author does an excellent job of building the intrigue level and creating tension. I was on the edge of my seat during the climax of the story to see what would happen next. While this is my first read of Palmer’s, I will definitely be back for more.

Hot Nights Winter LightsHot Nights Winter Lights by Christa Wick

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Purchased for Free

This was a fun, quick insta-lust turned love read.
Laney and Gary are both interesting and likeable characters whom I enjoyed getting to know.

I have read some of Ms Wick’s work in the past, so gladly picked this one up when I saw it was free. Give. The length of the book, I’d be reluctant to pay too much for it, but it was just what I needed in my Covid 19 quarantine funk.

In the Zone (Portland Storm, #5)In the Zone by Catherine Gayle

3.5 stars- Worth a Reader's Time

Purchased for Free

This is a book that has been on my TBR for a while and I plopped myself in the the series mid stream to meet Keith (Burnzie) Burns and Brie.

To say that these two each have issues would be an understatement. For Brie, it’s body image related to a health issue and jerk ex boyfriend. For Keith it’s grief and a fractured family relationship. Seeing them come together, heal and grow was sweet and refreshing.

In the Zone is a stand alone book, but it very much part of a larger series and there were times that I felt a little bogged down with the large secondary cast. There are lots of references to couple who were obviously prior main couples which would be great for someone who has read the series in order, but was slightly confusing for me.

Overall, this was a good read, but I do wish I had started the series from the beginning.

This was a fun read!
The idea of meeting someone on vacation, making a connection, then having that connection last after returning home is a bit of a fantasy.

I enjoyed getting to know Parker and Natalie and seeing glimpses of the friends they traveled with as well as key characters from some of Ms Pike’s previous books.

The way 7 Mile High unfolded was entertaining, but i struggled a little with the conflict. We only saw bits of Natalie’s history (this is a fairly short read) and that history played a big part in why things between her and Parker hit a snag. I would have loved to see more development around the conflict.

Overall, I liked this story and am curious to see if there are books for the rest of the Cancun crew.

Review Round Up ~ April 11

TBR Reads:

If You Were Mine (After We Fall, #3)If You Were Mine by Melanie Harlow

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Copy purchased in 2019 LIFT auction

The good girl and a bad boy is always an interesting combination and Ms Harlow definitely delivers here.

Claire and Theo are both interesting characters. I enjoyed seeing her gain the confidence to expand her horizons and go after some of the things she has always wanted in life and been afraid to try. Theo is more complex than he appears at first and it was interesting seeing him discover his marshmallow center.

If You Were Mine is part of the same series as After We Fall and it was fun to see Margot and Jack again.

Forever and All the AftersForever and All the Afters by K.I. Lynn

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Review Copy Purchased for Free

Ms Lynn is a newer author for me and I am still getting to know her work, so I wasn’t sure what to expect when reading Forever and All the Afters. The idea of a long lost love resurfacing at crucial moment was interesting and I was curious about the execution.

I don’t want to give too much away, but I will say that i liked the way the scenario here was handled. Aubrey and her high school boyfriend Pike are easy to like and root for, it didn’t take long before I wanted them back together.

This is mainly Aubrey’s story and it was hard to see her rationalize certain situations, but I think it’s a trap a lot of women fall into. It made me want to reach into the book and shake her! There is just enough of the story from Pike’s point of view that it became easier to understand why he did what he did and see the heart of the issue vs the perception.

Forever and All the Afters is a unique read and it makes me want to spend more time with Ms Lynn’s work.

Riven Knight (Tin Gypsy, #2)Riven Knight by Devney Perry

My rating: 4 of 5 stars - Would Recommend to a Friend

Review Copy Purchased

Before reading Gypsy King (book 1 in the Tin Gypsy series) I would have said that I didn't like MC books. At this point, I don't know that I would say it's moved up to being a favorite, but I definitely am enjoying Ms. Perry's version of the genre.

Riven Knight picks up very close to the end of Gypsy King and answers the question about what happened to Genevieve and Isaiah. I enjoyed getting to know both of these characters better and seeing the layers of who they are peeled back from the glimpses we've seen before. It was also fun to discover that Isaiah is connected to characters from another of Ms Perry's series.

The story surrounding Genevieve and Isaiah does an excellent job of blending their growing friendship/romance and the mystery of what happened to Genevieve's mother. The intrigue elements and evolving relationships kept me on my toes and made it hard to put the kindle down. I am definitely looking forward to seeing what happens in Presley's book.

About the Author:
USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author Kat Mizera is a South Florida native. Born in Miami Beach with a healthy dose of wanderlust, she's called Los Angeles, Long Island, upstate New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Atlanta home. She's never been able to pick which locale is her favorite, but if pressed, she'd probably choose the west coast.
A typical PTA mom with a wonderful and supportive husband (Kevin) and two amazing boys (Nick and Max), Kat can usually be found scrapbooking or indulging in her second love (after writing) - traveling. Greece is one of her favorite places in the world. She loves that Athens is a big city with a small-town feel. The food, beaches and culture keep her going back as often as possible.
Kat's been a working freelance writer for nearly 30 years. She sold her first article--a review of a rock concert--for $10 in 1985. Since then she's been an entertainment journalist, waitress, bartender, legal assistant, food critic, magazine editor, substitute teacher, and sports writer. She also spent some time working at A & M Records in Los Angeles.
As you can guess from her Las Vegas Sidewinders series, Kat loves hockey and occasionally writes articles about her favorite team, the Florida Panthers. The rest of the time, she writes novels: sexy, romantic fiction that she hopes makes you as happy as it makes her. There's something enticing about hockey players and romance...

3.5 Stars - Worth a Reader's Time

Review Copy Provided by Author

Ms Mizera is a newer author for me, but that didn't stop me from diving right into Ian's story. This book is the 15th (wow!) in a series, but read as a complete stand alone, I didn't have any trouble getting to know Ian, his teammates, family, or Everly (his romantic interest)

One word of caution, if you are expecting a heavy hockey story, then this isn't it. This story takes place mostly in the off season, so it's not so much a hockey story, but a story where the hero happens to be a hockey player.

I enjoyed getting to know both Ian and Everly. They were interesting characters with a lot going on in terms of family drama on both sides. My struggle that kept this from being a full 4 star read was the source of the conflict. While it was authentic to Everly's history, the way it was introduced felt forced and over blown. There were so many potential issues these two were dealing with that there were lots of options to force them apart. The issue that was picked plus Ian's explanation of things just seemed a little off to me.

Even with my conflict over the conflict, this was an entertaining read and seemed to be a good bridge for what will be coming in the future of the Sidewinders series. Ms Mizera does an excellent job of weaving teammates and family into the story so that I am looking forward to reading more.
