Marek by Sawyer Bennett ~New Release and Review

Marek: A Cold Fury Hockey Novel
Sawyer Bennett
Release Date: May 22, 2018

Synopsis:

Marek Fabritis is used to delivering blows, not receiving them. But when he gets tipped off by an anonymous email about his ex-girlfriend, the news leaves him ice cold—and it’s not because Gracen Moore is getting married to a total jerk. It’s the fact that Marek has a three-year-old daughter he never knew about. Now he’s going back home, not to play knight in shining armor but to make damn sure that no man takes what’s his. For the first time, there might be something more important than hockey.

Gracen Moore has always loved Marek. That’s why she let him go, so he could pursue a career in the NHL. And that’s why she never told him about Lilly. Only now does Gracen realize that she made an unforgivable mistake. But is that any reason for Marek to crash her wedding and make an epic scene? If the spark that still smolders between them is to be trusted, maybe. Still, Gracen’s not getting her hopes up. Because she knows better than anyone that appearances aren’t always what they seem. . . .

About the Author:

Since the release of her debut contemporary romance novel, Off Sides, in January 2013, Sawyer Bennett has released multiple books, many of which have appeared on the New York Times, USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists.

A reformed trial lawyer from North Carolina, Sawyer uses real life experience to create relatable, sexy stories that appeal to a wide array of readers. From new adult to erotic contemporary romance, Sawyer writes something for just about everyone.

Sawyer likes her Bloody Marys strong, her martinis dirty, and her heroes a combination of the two. When not bringing fictional romance to life, Sawyer is a chauffeur, stylist, chef, maid, and personal assistant to a very active daughter, as well as full-time servant to her adorably naughty dogs. She believes in the good of others, and that a bad day can be cured with a great work-out, cake, or even better, both.

Sawyer also writes general and women’s fiction under the pen name S. Bennett and sweet romance under the name Juliette Poe.

If you are looking for a hockey centered book, stop. Marek’s installment of the Cold Fury franchise is a story where our hero plays hockey, but it’s really a small piece of the tale.
If you are looking for a story about true love that gets a second chance, then this is one you want to read.
From a timing standpoint, this takes place immediately following the conclusion of Reed’s story, so if you are reading out of order there are potential spoilers. Other than that, and cameo appearances by other Cold Fury players, this is a stand-alone story.
Ms Bennett does an excellent job of capturing the angst and pain Marek and Gracen are dealing with as their past sweeps into the present. Neither is blameless and it is by turns heartbreaking and heartwarming to see them get things figured out.
I was prepared to not like Marek going into this book, mainly because of his behavior at the end of Reed’s story. Getting to know him here cast him in a completely different light. I found myself not only liking him, but rooting for him and Gracen as well.
Based on the number of “happily ever after” style cameos that were made, I am left wondering about the fate of the Cold Fury franchise? This is a trademark of Ms Bennett’s to maintain series continuity, but I have to wonder. Part of me feels like the team is ready for us to move on, but I also don’t want to say goodbye!
