Rainy Day Friends ~ Jill Shalvis ~ Blog Tour and Review

Starting over was her plan. Getting derailed by secrets wasn’t...

RAINY DAY FRIENDS
A Wildstone Novel
Jill Shalvis
William Morrow/Harper Collins

Following the USA Today bestselling author of Lost and Found Sisters comes Jill Shalvis' moving story of heart, loss, betrayal, and friendship

Six months after Lanie Jacobs’ husband’s death, it’s hard to imagine anything could deepen her sense of pain and loss. But then Lanie discovers she isn’t the only one grieving his sudden passing. A serial adulterer, he left behind several other women who, like Lanie, each believe she was his legally wedded wife.

Rocked by the infidelity, Lanie is left to grapple with searing questions. How could she be so wrong about a man she thought she knew better than anyone? Will she ever be able to trust another person? Can she even trust herself?

Desperate to make a fresh start, Lanie impulsively takes a job at the family-run Capriotti Winery. At first, she feels like an outsider among the boisterous Capriottis. With no real family of her own, she’s bewildered by how quickly they all take her under their wing and make her feel like she belongs. Especially Mark Capriotti, a gruffly handsome Air Force veteran turned deputy sheriff who manages to wind his way into Lanie’s cold, broken heart—along with the rest of the clan.

Everything is finally going well for her, but the arrival of River Brown changes all that. The fresh-faced twenty-one-year old seems as sweet as they come…until her dark secrets come to light—secrets that could destroy the new life Lanie’s only just begun to build.

3.5 Stars for a solid and entertaining read from one of my go to authors.
With Raining Day Friends, Ms Shalvis brings us back to Wildstone with a story about learning to trust and opening your heart.
When Lanie arrives at the Capriotti Winery, she's literally running away from life. It was a pleasure to watch to large and eccentric family pull her in and gradually open her up to emotions she had tried to turn off. I love her interactions with the twins and how she quietly slipped into the role of caretaker without anyone asking. Her romantic relationship with Mark really seemed like a case of the right people finally finding each other and I rooted for them to both sort their issues out.
I struggled just a little bit with how Ms Shalvis handled the reactions to River's (a key secondary character) reason to showing up at the winery. While I completely understood the family standing behind River, I was a bit frustrated with how Lanie was treated and portrayed after the revelations. Comments made by several secondary characters made it seem like they thought Lanie was the "bad" guy when she and River were both harmed by the same person and River was the only one who knew it. I was troubled by the perception that it was Lanie's job to make things right.
This was a good story about opening yourself up to friendship and a support network that everyone needs. The romantic storyline was also compelling. I am enjoying this series and hope to see more of the secondary characters in the future.
