Down to Deep by J. Daniels ~ New Release and Review

Two single parents and three adorable kids are about to have a summer they'll never forget in this sexy, heartwarming new novel of the New York Times bestselling series.

Following the sudden death of his wife, Nathan Bell spent nearly two years burying himself in work and neglecting his biggest responsibility: his daughter. Overcome with guilt, he wants to connect with little Marley, but he doesn't know how to do it alone. And then Jenna Savage throws him a lifeline.

A single mom of twins, Jenna is more than capable of taking care of Nathan's adorable two-year-old and wants to help Nathan however she can. As the days go by and her attraction to Nathan grows, she can't help wondering what might happen if they became a family for real. And the closer everyone becomes, the more right it feels.

Falling in love forces Nathan to face his biggest fear, and when hearts -- both big and little -- are on the line, the only thing scarier than needing Jenna and her kids so much is losing them all.

Stories involving single parents can be a challenge and that's usually when only one of the people in a potential relationship has a child. Ms Daniels chose to tackle the idea of a true blended "family" by introducing two people who are both single parents.

Jenna and Nate are characters that I found it easy to like. I especially found myself rooting for Nate to get his life figured out and take healthy steps forward for himself and his daughter. Jenna is a the type of person that I'd want to be friends with and the super awesome mom that I'd almost be intimidated by with her ability to do it all.

Down too Deep is a well written story that takes a slightly rose colored glasses look at moving past grief and starting to really live life again. I appreciated the honesty Nate had about his situation before meeting Jenna and the struggles he continued to have with guilt and fear. The kids; Oliver, Olivia, and Mallory; are little scene stealers and are one of the things that make this story so unique. Ms Daniels gives the kids an equal role in the developing relationship between Jenna and Nate, essentially having the five of them do the work to create a family during the dating phase instead of keeping the romantic and family relationships separate.

The overall sense I had while reading this book was one of healing and hope. These were people who aren't perfect - there were several times both Jenna and Nate made me cringe- but, they are the perfect complement to each other.

This is the fourth book in a series, but reads very well as a stand alone. Characters from previous books appear here in secondary roles and after reading Down Too Deep, I am curious to go back and read the rest of the series.
