The Coldest Winter by Brittainy C. Cherry ~ New Release & Review

The Coldest Winter by Brittainy Cherry is now live!

I didn’t know he was forbidden until after our one night stand…

I met Milo Corti during his self-destructive era, and he met me at the beginning of mine. That night when we crossed paths at a college party, we only had one goal: to feel good during our hell storms.

After we parted ways, I’d planned never to see him again. That was until I showed up for my first day as a student-teacher and found him sitting right there before me. Now I was forced to cross paths with the person meant to be nothing more than a fading memory.

The more time we spent together, the more drawn I felt toward him. When his world shifted for the worst, I couldn’t help but to lean in closer.

I’d always done the right thing. For the first time ever, I wanted to do something very wrong. I wanted to fall in love with the one person who was off-limits.

The problem with falling for something forbidden? Once you began to descend, you were destined to crash and burn.

Elizabeth's Review

4.25 stars - Would recommend to a friend

Review Copy Provdided by Author

This is a book that I struggled with how to rate.
When looking at just the story, who the characters are, and their evolutions this is a 5 star read for me. Where I struggle, "who" the characters were, especially Milo didn't quite ring true for me.

I genuinely liked both Milo and Starlet. They are characters that were easy to become invested in and root for to find out who they are and find a happy ending. Author Cherry handled the issues surrounding grief and the way that presents itself with honesty that was a bit raw, but also had an element of grace. I appreciated the way that Milo and Star supported each other and nudged each other along their respective paths to healing and self discovery. It was easy to become investedin the ideas that these two were stronger together.

Where I struggled - Milo and Star as presented are incredibly young. He's 19 and she is 21, but there are several situations where they don't act like it. For Star, the idea that she is 21 and a college junior rings closer to true as we see her move through the story. Her decision making, evolution, and emotional maturity are believable for someone her age who has had the type of loss she experienced. I had to keep reminding myself that Milo was 19. He presents as much more mature than I would expect of someone his age in various ways. Who his character is plays a key role in Star's character development, so it feels a little wrong to say that it wasn't believable, but I did struggle with it.

Overall, this is an emotionally impactful book that is touching as well as spicy. The secondary cast is small, but helps move the story along well. This is definitely a book I would recommend, with a disclaimer that the subject matter may be difficult for anyone with a fresher grief journey.
